There's my end quote, see, I didn't forget it...no really... - pktgumby, on 10/11/2007, -13/+470Gamestop rep: "Well, you could buy that nice, shiny shrink-wrapped version...or, for only $3 more I will take the dvd out, smudge it up some, and relieve you of that useless stack of paper inside.

You assume that the guy behind the counter, who is only making minimum wage and has to deal with ***** management and retard customers all day, gives a rats ass on how much you spend there. Really they don't care if you decide to leave right then and not buy anything. They only thing that bugs them is having to put all the ***** you decided not to get back up on the shelf. When I worked at target in the electronics department I would try to be polite only to be cussed at and told I was stupid because of company policy or stupid rules handed down from management that I had to obey or risk getting fired. Then after being called every name in the book I had to be polite to the ***** face SOBs or again risk getting fired. Really don't blame the employs blame the soul destroying, life sucking corporations and there requirement of all people hired for a managerial position to only have half a brain. - socalrob, on 10/11/2007, -16/+154That is one reason why I don't buy used crap from them. Used anything from them is a HUGE profit, as has been noted on digg before.
Also, gamestop lost my favor the other day when they sent out an ad in the Los Angeles Times that had a huge sale going on. It had the PSP version of the new DBZ game for $15 bucks. When I went to buy it they told me it was a typo. I said "No, no typo, there is no text here, just a picture of the box". So the guy started to "look at" an email and fiddled around for a few minutes to just tell me that they couldn't do anything. My girlfriend didn't want me to make a scene, so I just made the counter peon take off all but 2 items from my purchase (going from a $200 purchase to a $20 purchase) and then left. Even by saying I only was going to buy those 2 items, they still wouldn't honor the ad. What kind of manager loses a $200 sale over $20 bucks price difference in a mis-printed ad? I should have said Bait and switch...
Sorry for the rant, it just goes to show that their advertising, management and counter people suck. I have never seen a company NOT want a sale of a large amount that they will turn away a customer. Hell when I bought my new car 2 months ago they made me a great deal because I was paying cash right then, even though they did their "I have to see" shuffle. Money is money and business is business. - roastedbagel, on 10/11/2007, -7/+94I was going to make fun as well, but hell, I use IE at work too....no hard feelings?

- djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31Search for 'Final Fantasy XII' on their site and you'll get a similar deal. The Collector's Edition can be had new for $29.99. But if you're feeling saucy, you can snag a used copy for only $34.99!

y r u tlkin lke a prson dat cnt spel? - mst3kcrow, on 10/11/2007, -6/+32What's even worse is that EBGames/GameStop still sell used games as new. What I've seen at my local stores: no shrink wrap and fake covers all labeled as new.
- fatsobob, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26Browsing at work, oh well take what you can get.
- Skavenblight, on 10/11/2007, -10/+33Yup, he saves money, you save money (if the game actually works) and the people who actually made the game don't get a dollar. Sure sounds like a good deal to me! Gogo videogame industry!
Honestly, if you're gonna buy used, save yourself the trouble and pirate the game: it has the exact same effect on the developpers. - shadus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22Yah... something to the tune of
If ($usedprice > $newprice) { $usedprice = $newprice; } - mnm1200, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21That's only because they're running a sale right now. New sealed versions of certain games are 25-50% off.
DragonQuest VIII and FFXII:CE are both 25% off...
Here's the sale: http://www.ebgames.com/gs/gamedays/
It runs until June 17. - fataluber, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23gamestop can be fun. as long as your the manager at a low volume store. me and my co-worker would usually just throw empty game case at each other.
- Ngai, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18I called to ask how much would they give me if I traded in my PS2....
28 bucks...
and it has to have 1 controller and the wires....
***** that....
excuse my language.. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17they traffic drugs, weapons and biological experiments readying the nations for Apocalypse
- timpkmn89, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12That's because both FFXII and DQVIII are part of their Game Days sale, but their used counterparts aren't.
- techsmack, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13It has it's fun times..... But the company still sucks.
- techsmack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I worked at GameStop for 5 years.. The trade in is 60% or less of the game price used. We'd sometimes (sports games) give something like $15 trade in credit for something we'd sell for $44.99 used. Thats crap. I hate that company... Hated working there. They will fall out of the market soon enough. Online game stores play more of a role these days. Not to mention Walmart holds a huge share of the game sales market.
@GhostToon hah.. So true.. The most messed up part of the GameStop company is how they treat their employees.. Managers get to go to conference every year. They come back with 3 -4 boxes full of $50 games, DVDs, T-Shirts, sports bags... it goes on.... Its only up to the manager (and not even expected) whether they want to share.... The managers get bonuses. IF there is ever a contest, Selling the most Game Informer mag subscriptions or reservations (which are the 2 things that corporate seems to care the most about), the prize is a manager level prize... Although - technically the managers are supposed to only assist in sales, and help only when needed - meaning the store employees are the ones who have to work 4x as hard. Even when no contests are going on, you still have quotas... They got to a point shortly before I left, where the DM was pushing a move it, or move out policy. If you couldn't get at least 2 reservations and 2 subscriptions per (4-5 hour) shift, you could get warned then fired on next offense.
WTF what happened to helping customers? That was like the #1 thing in the handbook... Customer needs to be greeted within 15 seconds of enter the store, and you must ask them if they need help after 3 minutes - or something to that extent. Well when you have to meet quotas... Where do you want to be? On the floor where the other guy stands behind the register getting his and your quota? yah.. Then if you are behind the register too much they get mad...
***** it. Worst company ever.... - SpamBadger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Even worse than that. http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/2433/n167301002947602817io5.jpg Taken Jan 2007.
Elmo's number adventure for N64 costs $15. I question whether Elmo trippin` on numbers is worth that kind of money. - thefullhalf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9they are doing a "Game Days Sale" the next few weeks. A bunch of new stuff, including dragon quest VIII and final fantasy XII, is on sale among many other games. I bought Starcraft for $10. That is why the price is lower for new as opposed to the used game, which isnt on sale.
- MrFettuccine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Actually, the cheaper new version makes sense. I subscribe to Gamestop's newsletter so they send me stuff when they have discounts. Right now, they have a lot of discounts for new games... which include FFXIII and Dragon Quest VIII. So the price isn't going to stay down that low and I guess they don't feel it necessary to change the price of used games since soon enough, it'll go back to the normal price.
- laponsa, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Selling used games as new can work out in your favor, as well. I bought a game labeled "new" with no shrink-wrap, beat it in a few days, and returned it.
- Micrll, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I have to deal with IE 6 on my desktop at work (it only have 256mb of ram, dam XP sucks with that) and my work won't allow me to install firefox & the security policy specifically states no thumbdrives may be used on work computers with out management permission.
- linksdeity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I always avoid Gamestop for things like this.
I much prefer Gamecrazy, easily best prices on used games, widest selection of classic games, and best trade values. I recently purchased FF7 (Complete in case), Treasures of the Deep, and Zelda: Link to the Past there, all for 10 bucks. (Any 3 classic games = $10) - mvandemar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6"Whatever their pricing scheme is"...?
Well, I don't know... think it might have anything to do with setting the second dropdown option to "Used Games", which many people hoping to get a better price will select, and never know they're getting spanked? - redawgts, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You call that overpriced? Check this out.
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/9475/overpricedgame20060521er7.png - Spuy767, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6We all know that Trading games in is a rip off. They usually give you 20 bucks for a month old 50$ game, then charge twice that or more to sell it to someone else. They'll sell a game in ***** condition for five dollars less than retail.
- kelbear, on 10/11/2007, -7/+12Buying used from them gives them a bigger margin. I tried to buy a game new for 25. He advised me that he still had 1 copy used for 18. Naturally I took the used. He makes more money, and I save more money.
- Deku, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Dugg down for not offering anything worth reading (and most likely balding)
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5LOL Reminds me of buying and selling stuff to traders in Diablo 2.
- norcalscan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I didn't scroll, but I admit I clicked the X to close the window
And I'm on a frickin Mac.... - Anya09, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Just to let you know about the game in question, there's this huge three week sale that GS is doing, and that one game is part of the sale. A lot of new games were sent to stores, mostly back stock and the same goes for accessories, and they're trying to sell it and create a "Christmas 2". I mean, the crap load of boxes that we got in within a two week period was insane. And yes, I work for GS. I do enjoy it, but they treat the employees pretty bad and only pay min wage, even some store managers and key holders get paid at a very low rate. And then we're ranked on EVERYTHING! Trust me, I get tired of greeting every single person and asking them for their games to trade in, a game informer subscription, and to get people to reserve games. We have to do it, and if our % is low, we get yelled at, written up and in some cases, fired. Plus we have the ESRB down our backs to make sure we card people who look under 25 that want an M rated game. Two store managers were fired for not doing this. We also get ranked/watched upon how the schedules are made and what games we displayed on the floor. We have to scan a certain section each morning to make sure all the games that we have in stock, are shown on the walls. We also have to make sure all the displayed games are in their respected section and that they are in alpha, alpha order.
Sorry to vent like this, but we get a lot of crap from the higher ups and customers alike. I know its funny when a used game is only $5 cheaper than its new counterpart, but we get ranked on used sales as well, so its just our job to push it. - TheLoneWolf071, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5hate to sound condasending... but duh. that's how they make all there money. I worked for a game stop once... we gave customers $20 for a PS2, turned around and sold it for $90.
- techsmack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I never understood the friggin guting system at GameStop, the Loss Prevention must smoke crack.. Seriosly. Way more man hours went into gutting, ungutting, and searching for misplaced guts - than what it would have cost the company to get some security devices into the store. Allowing the sales associates to meet and greet the customers... And be next to people who might try to steal. Generally when we'd notice stuff stolen (controllers, etc) was when we were right in the middle of going through a 1000 game store transfer, in which we needed 300-400 guts made. No one could be on the floor.
guts = inside of the game (CD, booklet, etc), putting the empty box on the wall
So think this through... Have a sales associate come in from 4-9 and spend from 4-8 gutting games, then when no one comes in from 8-9, he can stand there while we the managers, and assistant managers, and highly underpaid 3rd key's count down drawers, ready the paperwork, and get things read for the next day. Meaning the 'Sales' associate got to do little to no sales, and me the manager on duty got to do all the sales - making it look bad that he didn't meet his quota of reserves and subscriptions.. Then call a meeting at the end of the month because everyones numbers are hurting except the managers, who have "no trouble" getting the subs, when they don't spend all the time on the floor. (like the sales associates "do")
I might sound like a mean and angry person, but I had 2 awards won for our store from secret shoppers. Where our manager with a store associate scored a 60 (anything below 90 was failing). I just got smart enough to get out before it sucked me in too far.

- t3hbagel, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9***** Gamestop and their used game policies. Greedy bastards.
- Sxeptomaniac, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I've seen the same thing several times. Whatever their pricing scheme is, someone needs to take another look at it.
- sbgunn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6you're
- Kavok, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I've purchased a copy of Advanced Wars for the DS at gamestop - new.
Took it home, fired it up - it had saved games on it.
"As for selling used games as new... we do not... " Yeah right. - Csma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3So I think I just read 100 different variations explaining the sale and what it is.. Do you NOT even read the posts?
- KyleMistry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I never understood what the huge deal was with GameStop/EBGames trade-in policy. So they don't give you much for a used game; at least they're giving you something for what would otherwise be nothing but a shelf-filler. They sell it at a price that, apparently, people buy it at, so they make a great profit.
Capitolist pigs, boo hoo hoo. - CrushThemTorg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4And just what if I am feeling saucy?
- mostpsp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Just dont shop there then. They are greedy yes, but if youre stupid enough to sell them your whole game collection for $35 then you deserve to be ripped off.
- KommisMar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Nobody's forcing you to buy used games from Gamestop. I don't, either. Why bother when the new game costs $5 more and I know that I'll get a scratch-free disc with all the pack-ins? But, before you complain, you should consider the fact that Gamestop's extremely high profit margin on used games/media/systems and accessories is the only thing that makes their business model viable. Have you ever looked at wholesale prices on new video and computer games? How would you like to buy 10,000 copies of Ultra Profitable Sequel IV at a $5-10 discount from the retail price, knowing that you have just a scant few weeks to sell those copies before you're forced to cut the price by $15 and take a loss on the rest of your stock? This is precisely why all of the mom-and-pop software stores from the '80s and early '90s have gone the way of the dodo. Big retails like Walmart can afford to lose a few bucks when you buy a video game from them. They'll make it back when you buy the higher-margin stuff that they manufacture overseas for pennies on the dollar.
Also, consider the fact that I have never personally seen Gamestop turn down a trade-in as long as the game or console worked and was in decent physical shape - no matter how impossible it was going to be to resell. So, that used copy of Ultra Profitable Sequel IV that they have on the shelves for 10% below the new price has to make up for the umpteen copies of Mediocre Film License II, Nondescript First Person Shooter III, and Slightly Improved From Last Year Sports Title '99 that they will never be able to move.
Personally, I think that more people would be enticed into buying used games if the prices were lower, but I think you have to understand that there are also deep problems in the software publishing and distribution model that are beyond Gamestop's control. They do what keeps them in business. -
