- mspencer712, on 10/12/2007, -5/+61I sure am glad 17 USC ยง117 makes this legal. I wouldn't want to live in a country where it was illegal to make backup copies of every piece of content I own.
http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode17/usc_sec_17_00000117----000-.html - Adoozie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37A friend of mine who works at a Gamestop says that a lot (or was it ALL) of the people who have reported their XBOX360 scratching their discs have tried changing the orientation of the XBOX while there is a disc inside. Just don't do that and your discs will be fine.
- victorycig, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25You know, Digg has these nifty 'reply' buttons at the bottom right of posts.
- mrmidgetman666, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"Yeah, but what idiot would move his Xbox360 while a disc is inside?"
My bet is the 12 people who gave you a thumbs down - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21yeah, i believe you
- doit3d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"Also take note you won't be able to play your backups as microsoft won't allow booting of dvd-r on your xbox360. "
So, then what's the point of making a backup copy you cannot use? - dslknight, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Actually, it's fairly easy to scratch the disks. Next time do a little research before posting. See http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/Xbox-360-Game-Disc-Scratched.htm
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12you can play the backed up games by modifying the 360's dvd drive firmware. Allowing it to boot off of burned media.
- snookums, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It probably would have helped if Microsoft hadn't done this exact thing during their demonstrations to show how cool the 360 was when the led's flipped as the console was turned on its side. That kind of gave people the impression that flipping the 360 during play was no biggie.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+111.) People with young kids
2.) People that have moved the console, only to have it scratch the disc
3.) Pirates - Step1Mark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+81 this isnt a mod...
2 xbox 360 wont know as long as u get a drive with bitsetting cause it wont see it as a dvd r-dl it will see it as a dvd-rom
3 shut up. no one wants to read comments from Dudley do right - afruff23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7My friend got the new dynasty warriors and he was playing it on his 360. He moved it while it was on. It made a really nasty noise and his CD was full of scratches. To 360 owners, is there a warning in the manual that says not to do this?
- liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No, actually it's quite ok to turn it on it's side. You shouldn't turn it on it's side while the game is running. That's how the disc get scratched.
- digdugdig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yes. The manual is quite explicit about that.
- usernameistaken, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13What would be the point of making a backup if you can't use it?
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5thats why you buy an extra flash chip, piggy back the hacked rom onto your dvd drive and add a toggle switch for hacked mode and normal mode for all of your xbox live needs. That way I can have my cake and eat it too.
- blanski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8You see the problem with your statement is that all the examples you listed are portable (i.e. laptops, the PSP, or even portable CD players). The xbox360 is not.
"Bad business decision and/or a lack of insight into the development." How did you come up with this? They set out to do a device meant to sit in one position for a very long time. It would have made no sense for them to be like "hey! lets make it so that nothing can happen to it if the owner decides to move it all of a sudden." Would have made as much sense as making it water proof.
Furthermore, the difference between a CD Player that does not scratch your cd and one that does is very obvious. Compare the dvd drive in a desktop to one in a laptop. You notice that little hub in the mirror where you have to "click" your disk in? Yeah, thats so that it doesn't move while spinning. - pinnette, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4its also on a sticker on the front of the disc drive
- Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@blanski
well said....cant believe how stupid people are about technology/mechanics on a site like this.
Parents should have got them legos or something when they were young :) - FinalDragoon06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@pinnette: I haven't looked at an Xbox 360 DVD drive, but I'd assume it's like the PS2's drive where it has a lip on the left side of the tray to hold discs in the vertical position.
- jedipimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Step1Mark ... does that mean that you could play the burnt iso, if your drive has bitsetting and makes the disk you burn look like a straight dvd not dvd r ?
- sagedude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Where the hell have you been the last few days? ;-)
If you have the right DVD drive you can use it. - tominator1983, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If it was talking about the owner of the computer program in the sense of the copyright owner himself, then the very existence of the write-up doesn't make sense because:
If you own the copyright, there's no debate about whether you can copy it. The very essence of a copyright means that you have the *right* to *copy* said item.
Therefore, I argue that the writeup is referring to the actual end buyer of the product/computer program. - teamgreen02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Yes, 360 owners have money"
I think the correct term is "had" money. - Edogz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is an extremely dramatic video of this in action. I really didn't think the problem was this bad, it seems crazy.
http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/video/Xbox-360-Scratch-Disks3.wmv (Direct link)
It's actually quite interesting to watch, he just barely puts it on its side and it make a sound like a chainsaw against some metal panels. ;) - CollegeRuled, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5On the contrary. Microsoft is definitely not in the wrong here. First off, if you are spending 300-400 dollars on a brand new, top of the line gaming system aren't you going to be at least a little inclined to read the manual? It should be blatantly obvious to do so before you even plug the thing in. Secondly, I highly doubt a person is going to move a 360 around while it's on and with a disc in it as much as one would normally do with the other devices you mentioned. Even if they do, chances are the system isn't going to be on. So the next time these complainers by a gaming system follow this simple acronym: RTFM.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9If I could give you ten diggs for this, I would. Excellent post.
- xboxing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Agreed. Xbox Live on the 360 is incredible, especially the Marketplace and Xbox Live Arcade.
Also, I read this on Xboxic.com...
"So trying this hack out on your precious 360 will very, very probably turn it into a 3.8kg paperweight only capable of playing games offline that were released between 360 launch and May 2006."
If that were the case, that would suck for those eager to try out the current hack. - FinalDragoon06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are those Dskin things too. Then again, I've never used them long enough to say "wow, these really work well and are perfectly worth that $1!"
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes, 360 owners have money, but we're not in the realm of the superrich, i.e. the only people who can afford the +$800 price tag for PS3 (add tax, one controller, HDMI cable, and a game to the $600 price).
Ohh to be rich enough to plunk down more than $800 for a video game machine - kopaka649, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2However, the DMCA makes this illegal because it doesn't allow circumvention of copy protection in any way, even to make backups.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, I would love to see you beat oblivion in 5 days, or hell even 10 days. That is really possible. yup.
- Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That's not hard. :P
- useneetwave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You understand I posted this and I work as a repair tech for several gameshops. Often the ODD (DVD Drive) is the culprit when a 360 needs service since it's just about the only moving part, right? Well in order to repair the drives with these replacement drives we have to insert a key just like you have to hack these drives. You can go out on the web and buy replacement DVD drives on the web http://www.etech4sale.com/products/parts.asp?sby=1&stxt=xbox+360+drive&x=39&y=6 but these wont help a consumer unless they are hacked. It's a bit odd these are available that way heh?
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's ok to turn it on its side, but only if its peftrectly level when using on its side, otherwise, it will scratch discs.
/from experience - matperk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I played with legos and I have yet to have a scratched 360 disc.
Correlation? :-D - allanak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I was under the impression that creating backup versions of software you legally purchased was constitued as "fair use" - but IANAL. According to RIAA, creating backups is not fair use (see http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060215-6190.html )
- JustinT9669, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2....http://www.xbox-scene.com
- pin0chet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Honestly, considering how long this process takes, why not just buy a $2.99 warranty from EB or BestBuy? Or get D-Skins? That way you're OK if your disc gets scratched, and you can still play on Live.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"now comes the magic part, you need to switch the dvd wich is in your drive with your original game.
Warning: this needs to be done without pressing the eject button!! "
I wonder, if Auto-Insert-notification was disabled, would there be a need to swap disc via the opened DVD-ROM drive? Would it be possible to do it while ejecting, since the OS won't start reading over the disc? - pinnette, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6despite how many times you see the 360 vertical in ads, it isn't designed to play games in this position, if it were then it would have a center clip to hold the disc in place when you put it in the drive. i don't know how long this sticker has been placed on the front of the 360 but there was a sticker that i had to remove from the front of the drive before i could even open it. it stated very clearly not to move the system while a disk is in the drive and i'm not sure how you get the disc to stay in the tray if you have it standing vertical when you put the disc in.
- Nooty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's good to know that if you bugger up your disks that you now can use a backup!
Genius!! - depodollar, on 03/27/2008, -1/+0You need your XBox360 to be modified with a mod-chip before you play games or movies.
Of course it can play any game of your own, and any movie (also DivX as you asked) as you wish after you get your XBox360 mod-chip installed!
It's a very mature technical now so it won't have problem if you get your XBox360 modified.
Also you can download any PAL or NTSC XBox360 game as you wish online now.
About the downloading and backup and copy games service: There are serveral sites providing such download services. They are very excellent on the contents, not only Complete big XBox360 games like Metroid, LOR, American Idols and Guitar Heroes etc. But also many movies, XBox360 tv shows, music and videos much more!!!
All you need is to join one of those sites to download so many resources. So you can download all those media as you wish!
And some sites can provide simple software help you to burn the ISO Games into DVDs, it is very easy and fast. After the instructions by them, you can go ahead to play those games you burned onto your XBox360.
Maybe a good review site to those download sites might help you very much on judging which is one is the best for you:

Good luck and have fun with your XBox360! - merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5"mainly due the fact that the microsoft xbox360 is causing alot of trouble on game discs like scratches due the malfunction of several dvd-drives"
No, that's only when douchbags move the 360 from horizontal to vertical and vice versa while its on...
Here's a guide on how not to scratch your games:
step 1- Leave that ***** alone when its on! - PRESS_00, on 10/12/2007, -14/+13About piracy:
One of the major attractions of the xbox360 is Xbox live. Do you really want to risk getting banned from it just so you can play a single player game that you would have finished by the time your rental is due(games are short nowadays) ? - useneetwave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Possibly with linux tools for your OS X and a sata connection. Another method exists to force a Xbox 360 dvd drive into modeB and then windows assigns a drive letter and you can extract the sectors and rip the title without hot swapping. It's the original xtreme method. I'd say there's hope for Mac but nothing currently, sound familiar?
- scottjpw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Clever sods!!!!!
- Mutaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I dint think it will work this way
http://www.yahali.com/portal/ - kyodo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0IF any of you people take a few secs to take a look at how a dvd drive is made/works then you would see that as the tray is retraced into the drive the traverse mech (which is the optic assy' and spin motor) move up and clamps the disk to the spin motor, there is a few ways that it can scratch your disks but all are faults and need to be looked at. As you probably guess by the text that yes i am a tech and no you should not move your unit while it is running is not advised as its spinning at hi speed and you will get an off ballance flywheel affect.
I hope this helps the convo.. -
