- AntBing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23You, and the word noob are whats wrong with the gaming industry. Not everyone wants mind-numbing first person shooters, or another badly textured action/adventure title. I'm glad to see developers branch out a bit. If it's really a good title people will buy it and more developers will be willing to try new and creative things.
- d1rtfarm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Stop looking at me Swan!
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21Donkey Kong sucks.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Is it really that hard to find? I was at Target last night and saw about half a dozen copies or more on the shelf. The $35 price tag for a DS game swayed me from buying it though. The style reminds me of a mix between Sin City and Max Payne.
- vett, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17I disagree, it's a very good game, but i think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Maybe you should play more Hotel Dusk then? I'm sure you'd be annoyed if someone said: "I enjoyed Hotel Dusk much more than the 5 minutes of Phoenix Wright I played." =P
- notDREW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7While the idea isn't really new, it's refreshing and the problem is that people just aren't giving games like this a fair shake.
- MrBungl3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Best game i've played on my DS by far.
It's perfect. From the art style to the dialogue.
Can't.. stop.. playing.. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@Rayza
You cannot get yourself stuck in the game, if that's what you're implying. - realchris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Looks interesting. Reminds me of Deja Vu for the NES.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We need more games like Deja Vu and Shadowgate on the DS.
- DiggedDugged, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5For anyone who wants to save a few bucks, you can get this at Amazon for $30 with free shipping and no sales tax.
- ContactRose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"If it's really a good title people will buy it and more developers will be willing to try new and creative things."
That should read: "If it's really a good title people will buy it and more developers will try to capitalize on it by creating millions of clones, most of which will never live up to the original." - handshakedrugs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It wasn't too hard to find, but there are three EBgames/Gamestops in my area and none of them ordered it for its initial release. Wal-mart was the only place in town that had it. They had about 4 or 5 copies for $30.
Trying to buy Hotel Dusk was the final straw for me and EBgames. I don't want to preorder every single game I buy. If I go out on release day to find a game, then a GAME STORE should have at least one copy of that game, no matter what it is. The local Wal-mart pretty much hides their DS section, when compared to the Xbox and PS3 sections, yet they still have 2-3 times more DS games than the local EB. - unclefrank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It is sort of a book in game format, but aren't many video games like movies in game format? I don't hear you complaining about that :)
There is a long history at this point of games being interactive movies basically (final fantasy 4+ anybody?), This game does involve a lot of reading, it isn't a shooter, it isn't an action game. Also you can get the game for $30 at toys r us, and last time i checked some hardcover books can get around that range. - Usodarake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Can people like, stop saying "like" every like, other word?
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah... I just ordered it on Amazon for $29. Why is this hard to find again?
- orb_nsc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This game is from the same small company (Cing) that made Trace Memory. While not perfect, it is the first and so far only DS game I played all the way to the end. I'm definitely picking this one up. Good adventure games are rare these days, and Cing is one of the few companies willing to try it.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The game is terrific, and I'm not sure about "availability" problems... I picked it up at my local Gamestop without so much as a preorder. As for the art style, I'd say it's more reminiscent of that music video for "Take on Me." Either way, you can definitely tell that the game had high production values, as is shown with the care taken for the story, the interface, the characters and the art style.
Pick it up, today, especially if any Sierra adventure game ever cracked a smile through your lips. - ninjakoala, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In my opinion it's an interesting game. It's far from a title for everyone - not even all adventure fans. It's excessively text heavy and it's great because it helps flesh out characters and the storyline.
It's a very impressive game for the platform from a technical point of view. It's one of the largest games released for the DS so far. - hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Phoenix Wright would be pretty boring after 5 minutes too. The opening to both PW games is like some random cutscene where you have no idea what is going on.
- nukage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hooray for the DS!
- Wonotch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Give the kid a break. His user icon is of scarface, he obviously wouldn't know a good game if it punched him in the face, if thats anything to go by.
- pseudo.hero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Got it from gamefly over the weekend and still hooked. Very fun game.
- apotheos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Uh...isn't $35 quite an affordable price point for a new video game?
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's an average adventure game. While it has a good story, it still has the old pitfalls of all other adventure games. Not the best game for the DS, but still a good addition to the genre.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, there is a left-handed mode which flips the screens around and remaps the buttons. In fact, the first thing the game does when you boot it for the first time is it asks you if you are right-handed or left-handed.
- AntBing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6It was neat to see how EGM decides a games overall score and what it's based on. I don't have a DS but Hotel Dusk may be the reason to pick one up. dugg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7You know something? YOU SUCK!
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you see it for $35, do not buy it. The MSRP is $30. You can get it for $25 at Best Buy if you use a Gamer's Gift Card with the coupon that comes with it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, this game is very good. I still think "Castlevania: PoR", "Mario Kart DS" and "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan"/"Elite Beat Agents" are better though...
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Nothing beats Galaga
- Optimistic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The game is cool, but it is a bit too slow so far (I'm in Chapter 4). Plus, the music is bad, really bad.
The story is cool, however, at least cool enough to play once through. - requinox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I liked the tune that plays whenever you talk to Mila. Everything else was pretty generic.
- progeeks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey. Pretty awsome.
Thoses guys totally sold it to me, will pick my copy up tomorrow.
Thanks - emdeesee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bought this on Saturday and have played about 30 minutes. It seems to be a great game. I grew up on point and click adventure games and it seems like the DS is bringing them back.
Gamestop near me had about 6 copies behind the counter, none on the shelves though. I had to ask if they had it. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Buy an import. You guys should be used to that by now.
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My main problem with giving it a fair shake is that it sounds a lot like a book in game form... and books don't cost that much money.
- decay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As true as it is, it sounds like "you're not good enough, buy an import".
Yeah I know, rough childhood :) - darkdaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got it yesterday and played through the beginning and was actually pleasantly surprised by the writing. There were a few points where I laughed at what one of the characters said, though i do agree that the 'wait!' for more information is a little annoying - if they'd have just skipped him saying 'wait' and go straight to the dialogue options past that it would have made for more fluid conversation, but otherwise I've been quite pleased.
It could be I'm more used to retardedly bad writing in video games, especially DS games, with more of that japanese wackiness then anything close to Hotel Dusk's style. I did end last night by getting kicked out of the hotel (be sure to save often, especially before potentially dangerous situations when you're in a place you're not supposed to be in). So far I'm pleased with how I've gotten, and I think the visuals are excellent. - seanpackage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just bought it for $30 dlvd off of eBay. I think it is considered hard to find by people who only shop at "game stores" (EB, Gamestop, ect.) When I called my local EB they said, and said this only,"If you didn't preorder one, you didn't get it."... Ummmm thanks.... Off topic, but I hate the tactics they use to try and sell preorders at those stores...
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just started the game and I know exactly what you are talking about. I went in expecting a much higher quality of writing and sophistication in the characters.
I completely don't identify with the main character at all. He goes from randomly nice to utterly rude all over the board and basically is just pestering the heck out of everybody he runs into for no discernible reason. His idea of engaging conversation is to keep saying "Wait! What do you mean by BLAH?"
I picture him like some 30s gumshoe ricocheting off the walls "Not gunna talk eh? Then maybe I'll just go over here for a bit, eh? How'd ya like that eh? Hey little girl, eh whats the big idea eh? Got a puzzle eh? Maybe I'll just solve that then eh? Oh you gotta go eh? Lets see over here eh? Maybe I'll go back downstairs eh? Lemme look at this lamp eh? Where's my package eh? Who are you eh? What are you doing eh? Room grants wishes eh? Thats a load a balooney eh?"
I'm going to stick with it though, I figure it's just starting out awkward and the goings on of the actual game will make up for this fairly contrived beginning. - allisonaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i see you have to turn the ds on its side for this game. i'm a lefty, does this game allow you to pick which direction you turn it, or am i SOL?
on too many games for ds, my hand blocks the HUD/interface/whatever. i wish all games would allow you to 'flip' the interface, but... games like this, where you turn the screen sideways, it is a necessity. so, will i be able to play it? - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cinq
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, it was quite obvious even if I didnt know he company's name. They both sorta feel like they were made by the same group, both of them even have that "let me go over what happened so far" minigame at the end of each chapter. I was thinking "Woah, just like Trace Memory" the second I ran into that in the end of Chapter 1 of Hotel Dusk.
- PsyQ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I _want_ to like this game, but am I the only one who finds the writing rather cheap? *MINOR SPOILERS* The characters are overdrawn and erratic, with cheesiness dripping from all corners. The puzzles are forced into the storyline sometimes (the main character, hard tough Mr. Police Man, cannot climb a set of stairs because a little girl is sitting on the side of one step?) and characters outright refuse to talk to you if they're "doing something else" and you have to figure out when they've stopped doing something else to advance?
I don't want to sound mean (will be buried anyway ;), but did the people who put this into the category "playable book" actually read any quality books recently? - notDREW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, i found it at Fry's (first try). Although it was the only copy, I'm sure it'll be fairly easy to find it on online retailers.
- ahatter, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5best DS game if you like reading.
