- parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -8/+107***** you, sony.
- Inverse24, on 10/11/2007, -2/+78Doesn't Sony know the only reason the PSP was a success was due to it's large mod community?
- user123, on 10/11/2007, -3/+50This is really an unfortunate development. I hope that Dark Alex meets with the same success he has with the PSP in his future endeavors. Thank you Dark Alex for all your effort, you really help make the PSP a great portable gaming device.
- superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -8/+41thats stupid, people that have downloaded Dark Alex's custom firmwares are probably the last remaining people on earth that still touch their PSPs. Sony is shooting itself in the foot over and over again
- n8r0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- x3sphere, on 10/11/2007, -9/+28c'mon QJ, just link to his site.
digg this instead:
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Dark_AleX_Retires_From_The_PSP_Scene - marcosc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18"Bye, scene.
I've decided to cease OE development, and leave PSP scene. The reasons are various. One of them is the time it consumes, which I'm losing from other things. The other is related to my security. I didn't like Sony menaces to PS3 hackers. I think it is better to leave now rather than end paying the consequences. "
Doesn't anyone read articles anymore? Sony never threatened him (directly), he left the scene as a precaution. Either way, his contributions will be missed... - FatherG, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16I hope D_A is nice enough to release the source of the unfinished 3.50-1 OE to Fanjita and the rest of the guys at Noobz. If anyone has both the skill and reputation to continue his work it's that crew.
- knilsilooc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I bought a PSP because of the efforts of Dark AleX. Without him, PSP wouldn't be nearly as good as it is today. Just look at how many people bought Lumines after the exploit. They obviously want homebrew, Sony's making a huge mistake. Thanks Dark AleX for your efforts, you will truly be missed by many.
- bhattsan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13I can see why Sony stopped him now, before he hacked their official iso loader. This is sad... I was waiting for remote play over the internet. Oh well :(
- crushfan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9direct link: http://dark-alex.org/ or http://dax.lan.st/
- gregulate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9This sucks. At least my 3.40OE has so many features, I doubt I'll need to use any other exploits any time soon.
- cavie2002, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12coming next week dark_sony OE firmware with new extra security features!!
- SexyPopMachine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Legal concerns? Umm, get your ***** right.
He will be missed if this is indeed true. But, I highly doubt it. He did claim that he was going to leave back in the day. But did he? No. - TangentThought, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Just another prime example of taking things out of context. Once people see "Sony menaces to PS3 hackers" and "better to leave now rather than end paying the consequences" that automatically means Sony has seeked legal action against DAX? People are such idiots nowadays.
- scabbers, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Someone from Sony gave him a big fat brown paper bag full of cash.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+15Every day marks a new low for Sony.
- FatherG, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I use the emulators and roms to /legally/ play my collection of NES and SNES games. I don't have a working console anymore but I /do/ have the original carts.
Fair use *****, understand? - AirwavesV2, on 10/11/2007, -12/+18This is a new low for sony.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7lots. one of the main reason i use custom firmware is so i can read ebooks on my PSP.
and what's wrong with playing roms that you wouldn't otherwise be able to buy? - loganhid, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12Damn you sony, Damn you!!!!
I'm gonna miss that guy - thanks for all the great efforts :( - n8r0n, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I use it to run MapThis! with the GPS receiver...
- unre4l, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6http://darthno.ytmnd.com/
- ElPieEater, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Probably the most common use for it is to play psx games we already own without redownloading them (via a ps3 I don't have) for a sillly fee. Would've been much nicer if Sony would just provide a tool to convert psx games to psp format (popstation) rather than forcing double purchasing. Dark_Alex++
- simewich, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5dark_alex probably got bought out by sony and was told not to talk about it. At least he got some cash.
- Darth_tater, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I use the OE firmwares, but with the exception of a little galactic breakout and snes9x i dont use my psp at all, and when i say a little i mean less than 3 hours of play time a week. i cant imagine what sony will do if they dont release a killer game for the psp.
- apoc06, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6uh... sony didnt actually threaten him directly as far as i know. he was worried over the ps3 statement not the psp statement. if anything, sony admitted to a few of the added firmware features that they added were in part due to requests and development in the homebrew scene. they never acknowledged the homebrew scene directly, but as a corporation with stockholders and publishers to answer to, they couldnt directly endorse any entity that opens them up to isoloaders and piracy.
sony made the same blanket statement against the psp homebrew scene, but never actively pursued the scene. they just released their own firmware sealing holes.
IMHO, if sony was smart they would hire this guy. - Osjpr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I'ms suspicious. Until he got a C&D there is no reason for him to stand down on the basis of security concerns.
- Reno582, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I use it to play my legally bought Doom games.
ID doesn't restrict where and with what I put those wads well except for on the internet, which I would never do - LintShaver, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Thank you Dark Alex, you will be missed
- springah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3browsers? why lie for.
- Sabin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The PSP doesn't make sony money, software sales do. Sure his work lets you use homebrew but the vast majority of people running OE firmware are doing so in order to run ISOZ. Almost every person that bought a PSP because of OE firmware is actually lost money for sony since most of them will never buy a game as long as they own the console.
If custom firmware actually helped sonys business model then they wouldn't be doing everything they can to stop it.
Personally I run OE firmware and I also have a library of 20+ games but I am the exception, not the rule. - parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Me!
But for the most, I play roms, which isn't illegal. (I own all the games.) - allan882, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dark Alex has helped Sony a lot. A PSP is nothing without his programming. I`ve known lots of people that bought PSP because of homebrew.
- tomi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3A saint has come and gone. It's definitely a sad day for the scene.
Thank you, Alex for all you amazing hard work. We all owe you one. - demodawid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2DO NOT WANT.
- DiggzDE, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8I was involved somewhat in the homebrew scene since the initial release of the PSP. I fell off after a while, a little before Dark Alex saved himself and his rep with his dramatic "homebrew". Back before then, he was in his elitist group days and more. His attitude made me and a lot of other people sick and annoyed. Honestly, the guy was a great help to the scene, but he was an ass of a guy to start off with and only saved himself by his developments within the last year or so.
Oh well. What goes around comes around. - S0m3dud3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Well thanks DA for everything you have done!
Lets hope BOOSTER comes back or someone else comes to the rescue! - admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8I play my PSP every day, and it's running 'stock' firmware.
So "probably" not. - jostheller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Does anyone know if Alex posted information on how he created his firmware? and for what it is worth... I am sure someone else will pick up the gauntlet.
- MedHead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I bought Lumines because it's a good game.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well you didn't just give a link directly to his site, but did the equivalent of blogspamming so you could get your own digg submission a few extra diggs..
- Respec7, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4*****
- Makiyura, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3THE WORLD JUST LOST ANOTHER HERO! we gonna miss u Dark AleX! GOOD LUCK! GG!
- triplehelix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2if sony was smart, they would hire him, and embrace as much of the homebrew community as they possibly can.
- benibx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4This is living? More like, This is leaving.
- parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1He linked to his dugg story, which is indeed not a link to the site.
- Zettabyte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It happen to PS3 hackers and there ISO loaders.
- TheTjalian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm always playing it to play the various homebrew. Pretty much all the ROMs I want to play are on the Virtual Console.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1what?
