- 50clint, on 10/12/2007, -7/+74Definitely nothing wrong with that. I think it's a little crazy to pay that much for a game console, but hey, it's their money.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -7/+53This is NOT a comment. lol
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Kind of mean, but both people benefit :)
- charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28I don't see how it's mean. $100 a day isn't bad for a bum, and I'm sure they appreciate the work. It's actually kind of philanthropic, I think.
- JayMeaux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25after they get done waiting for my PS3s, I'm going to pay them to fight each other to the death. The winner will receive the pay and a 40oz.
- lynxpardinus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I agree, nothing wrong with the idea but.......
From the article:
"eight units expected to go on sale Friday."
"A truck rolls up, one of those U-Haul type trucks, and seriously, 50 people rolled out"
Something tells me that this guy forgot a decimal point when doing the math..... :P - Gohan5052, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17While i dont agree with what u said i did burst out laughing at work. on a call with a customer
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Simpsons did it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Yeah this is a good idea, I thought about trying to convince some friends to go into this with me. It would be even better if the idea were extended to more than just console launches.
Imagine having a company filled with nothing but "spot holders".
A customer calls up because they dont want to wait in line for tickets, consoles, games, etc. pays you $10-$15/hr to camp out in front of a store and hold the spot. When "launch" time rolls around, you show up and the guy lets you have his spot after the transaction is complete.
All you would have to pay your employees to do this is minimum wage since they are doing nothing but sitting in line. There is only the issue of safety for your employees and maybe ensuring that they get a good enough spot in line to justify the price. Other than that it could work. - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17that is genius
- mtownand1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12i would do it for $100/day
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15narutofroggy: You've obviously never hired Mexican day laborers. They make more than I do.
(not a complaint or racist comment, it's just the truth) - Area51mafia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12The Hobo Race?!
- barius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@pegothejerk,
Actually no, Capitalism is not modeled after survival of the fittest. Capitalism isn't modelled after anything except...Capitalism.
Capitalism the only system that understands that you can't fight greed. All other systems (socialism, marxism, etc.) label greed as a destructive force that needs to be removed, usually through the institution of laws. These laws are what cause those systems to become corrupt, because Humans make laws. Capitalism on the other hand was designed specifically to 'harness' greed. The brilliance is that it does this largely in the absence of laws (you still need some, but only enough to guide rather than punish).
Capitalism works by rewarding those who are willing to do what is necessary to get some reward. More importantly, you are free to ask for whatever reward you think you deserve. You won't always get it, but that's where the 'Market' comes in. In a Capitalist Market, you are selling your labour, your skill, your athletic ability, your artistic ability, etc. You are free to charge what you desire, so long as someone else is willing to pay it. Moreover, if you become wealthy you in turn become an investor who pays others to do work that brings returns for you to then re-invest in other ventures, further enriching your employees and yourself. No other Market system is as 'fair' as Capitalism because only Capitalism rewards you for the things that *you* can offer.
The reason Capitalism works where others fail is because Humans are by nature greedy. The majority of people will work harder and smarter if they believe the reward is good enough. This is a GOOD thing, it is the reason you have enough food to feed your family, it is the reason we have an abundance of skilled thinkers, entertainers and athletes, and it is the reason we have advanced technology so quickly.
There may be a better system than Capitalism, but it has not yet been discovered. - Gohan5052, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Im so good at what i do i can do it while im in "autopilot"
- Galestorm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Ah, capitalism...
- mtownand1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8i'm a student. also, 4.16 an hour isnt bad for doing absolutely nothing.
- Ndiggnation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@elektriq: Hey, jackass, I am the most vehemently anti-racist person I know. I stand up against it every chance I get. It's a joke, t had nothing to do with racism.
@ Muyoso.: It was simply a joke referencing the past allegations that Saddam was trying to buy Playstation2's for missle guidance systems. Being that half of everyone on Digg is about 5, they probably don't remember back that far. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16What if the bums decide to use that money on ninjas and hookers last minute and give up the place in line? They weren't contracted, and can't be sued...
- bparker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is exactly how the Japanese launch went. The first string of people in line were all Chinese who spoke 0 Japanese, being paid to wait in line. Also they weren't given their money until they got to a very close point in line, so they wouldn't run away with it. The "owners" waited down the street in alleys for them to return with the PS3, or I guess so they could run them down if they walked off with it :P Read the Kotaku story on it, it gets even more hilarious.
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8How is anything he said racist?
Can we not even talk about anyone that isnt white anymore? You sir are the racist one for simply finding anything in his comments that could be seen as racist. - nipterink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6hardly creative. pay someone to do something for you. that's how the world works.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -6/+10I thought the Japanese thought of this first?
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hell, what would the bums be doing anyway? Standing around somewhere else, that's what.
- phenolholic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4you won't get ***** offering a 40oz. throw a crack rock and you might see a brawl.
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6What an awesome Idea. You could pull down what, like 200 dollars every 4-5 years.
- rebz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Damn!" -Butters
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oh no, I got the joke. I just can't stand people who automatically call racist to anything and everything.
- charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7You're joking right? There's alcoholics or mental people who live at the shelter and they're offered $100 a DAY to sit outside and save a spot in line, and this bad how? Many people in communist countries could only dream of making $100 a year. Apparently you missed the part where we're the richest large country in the world with the largest middle class with the best medicine as well? Without capitalism there wouldn't be 5% of these wonder cures we're developing for everything from cancer to high blood pressure. Without capitalism you wouldn't be sitting on your computer bitching about it to other people because you wouldn't be able to afford a computer, computers would not be nearly advanced enough (if they existed at all) and there would be no internet, even if you could afford it.
Capitalism has made us wealthy (and ignorant for some obviously). It's amazing how you can ignore all of prosperity and wealth and medical and technological advances this system has brought us. Almost every American is in the top 1 to 7% of earners and consumers on the planet. If our health care is expensive, it's because it is so advanced and new developments in medicine are HUGELY expensive to develop. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@sideshowRAHEEM:
It's true, Day Labor companies will take ANYONE to work and get paid daily. I would know; I've done it. - sl33stak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My brother WAS doing that too, except he was paying two crack heads. But the Walmart in Jackson Michigan just a few minutes ago announced that their PS3 shipment or some eason got re-routed to Wisconsin! Sooo, the crack heads waited for two days for nothin! Needless to say my brother is out $325. Damn you Walmart, I was supposed to make $400 on each one we sold on Ebay. :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5$100 a day? This is taking a HUGE risk. If they have these guys standing in line for even just 3 days they are NOt guaranteed of making that much extra on Ebay.
- dyvbond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ok, this is at least the 7th time you've posted that link in comments, please stop?
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't know what your homeless are like, but the homeless here in DC will fight over a red bull if given the chance. A 40 would cause a mass riot of homeless.
- blinky04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I were homeless I think I'd go sit in line anyway.
Nothing better to do, and you could probably sell your spot for a fair bit towards the end anyway. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Muyoso:
A poor person has no business buying a PS3. Hell, a PS3 is popular BECAUSE it's overpriced. Have you seen all the bling lined up right now, waiting for a chance to buy cred? - Dylan16807, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why are poor people buying PS3s?
And did you really just say that giving homeless people money is bad? - charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Apparently the majority of diggers find this discussion of Hobo's to be majorly offensive. PC police are out tonight boys!
- joemc72, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10I gotta admit, it's a seriously smart idea....the hobos get their wine and crack, and the guys get their PS3. Everyone wins!
- lynxpardinus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I would be a good idea if the people doing weren't morons. So you bring 50 homeless people to a place that will only have 8 PS3 on launch day??
Can you say oooopppss? - positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great deal for the homeless employees, agreed. One thing I can't help thinking about this whole PS3 launch situation though. From everything I've read and heard, it seems as though the vast majority of people who pre-ordered or are waiting on line are only buying the console to resell on Ebay. Now odds are that the same people who are fanatical enough to shell out $2000+ on Ebay for a launch PS3 would also be willing to camp out to get first dibs. So, who exactly do these people think they are going to be selling to?
- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5if someone that desperate to get a system let them, its their money not ours
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6http://www.bumvertising.com/
- sl33stak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2lol, at least my brother still paid his "hired hands" hell. he even bought them coats and boot and gloves. Not to mention food and drinks while they waited. Greedy? Nah, he's just an investor, Altruism is for the weak.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, by proxy, you're a drug dealer?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was a truly heart-warming little story.
- barius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@sideshow
No, regular workers negotiate pay raises or benefits all the time. Unions are a legal response to abusive behaviour, but they aren't always the right choice.
@chobo2
That's a good point, but then the problem is that they are not paying taxes. If they aren't paying taxes when they do get paid, then guess who's tax money is being spent to run those homeless shelters?
We all want to help the homeless find jobs and a better life, but doing it illegally isn't the solution. - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I would argue that a majority of the people who purchase the PS3 initially will be poorer people. You know, there are reasons most rich people are rich and most poor people are poor. Bad decisions cause an awful lot of poverty in this country, look up the average credit card debt of Americans, ie $8000. If you are claiming that poor people will not be buying this console tonight in order to have it for christmas, you are simply naive.
Really affluent people will not and most likely cannot sacrifice an entire week, Monday until now, to camp out in front of a store so that they can get a game console.
@Dylan16807 Of course giving homeless people money isnt bad, but handing them 5 hundred dollars is asking for something aweful to happen to them. If you don't think they will be a target for other homeless people, you are kidding yourself. Most homeless people don't have banks to invest the money in. - kinesis8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That's also assuming you lack the business smarts to divide up the dude's payment into installments...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah. Sit in the queue, then, just before the shop opens, you put up a sign saying "THIS SPOT $300!". They could even use their powers of b.o. and scary shouting to advance in the queue.
Any homeless people reading this on their blackberrys or whatever homeless people use to read digg, should definitely do this. -
