- emperor799, on 10/12/2007, -5/+52Actually, they said that there are two SD slots, and you can only see one under the flap, so this could easily be the other one, the purpose of this one being for general storage of downloaded games, etc. while the fornt one is for easy-access SD a-la friend's house, etc.
If not, I hope it's a slot for blank DS cards with the ability to throw the downloadable games on them and pop them in your DS! :D - mikeslemonade, on 10/12/2007, -10/+36It's the place to put your bandages after you smack yourself with the nun-chuck.
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Say it out loud: "Hidden Wii Slot."
- Ganpachi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27My guess is that it could be a serial port for later expansion, and if history continues as it has in the past, it will go unused.
- babylonian, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Yeah, that actually looks like it's the right size, unlike the one under the front flap.
Anyways, since it's not the easiest to access, it's probably nothing you'll manipulatewith frequently like a camera. Maybe it's for use with some sort of proprietary Nintendo HDD? - craigts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Last time I tried the 'hidden wii slot' my wife slapped me!
- JoyrexJ9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9PCMCIA ? I know the Wii is going to have support for retro games, but why retro hardware?
- amk29j, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Well, Ganpachi is right about previous serial ports being unused. If this is anything like previous serial ports, it WON'T be used.
- Kazanoe, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Too bad its not my size :(
- donsherio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Looking at another image, its just the same on the other side of the wii. I think its just a part of the casing, either that or it comes off for accessories. The "blown up" image magnification is edited to show that its outlined and looks like the part slides out, but really, they would never make the base part of the casing that thin, so its part of the base. (that site even shows the same "in question" part of the wii blown up in the top right corner as part of the site design.)
- ascalonx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10This is not news, this is speculation. I'm as excited about the Wii as any other gamer out there, but c'mon. This is stupid.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i know what it is...
its nothing. - castleking, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10There was a port on the gamecube used for the Game Boy Player, so I guess sometimes they are used.
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Actually not true amk29i they have all been used just only in Japan, (Famicom Disk Drive, Super Famicom Satelview, N64 DD, GCN Network adapter and Game Boy Player) I think it was a first for America getting attachments with the GBP and Network Adapter.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The first thing I thought was "that looks like an SD slot". And I also vaguely recall them saying there would be two as well. This makes perfect sense, and you're likely to want to upgrade the internal 512mb with something "permanent", say a 1gb SD card that stays in the Wii 99.99% of the time. The front one is perfect for a smaller card (256-512) with save games, multiplayer VC games, etc, that you can pull out and bring to a friends.
Alternatively, it could easily be a cover, not a slot, that opens up a small internal access point. Perhaps an internal battery for time keeping?
Lastly, it might be a small port for a card with a DVD/CSS decoder authorization code, or however they authenticate that. Seems stupid, as you'd expect them to just use software, but they did mention DVD playback through "an internal expansion", which I always assumes was a bad translation which meant internally upgraded software, but who knows. - Rockarollr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I'm with thebraineater on this one. It looks like a place where the base would "snap" into the console to keep it firmly held in place. For those of you that do not know, the "base" is also the power supply.
I'm just as excited about the Wii as anyone else. I have been anticipating the release of the console since the innovative controls were announced. But the speculation about this console has just gotten completely out of control. I've heard everything from this "hidden slot" BS all the way to "Nintendo may add an extra button to the final controller." So what?!? It will be what it will be when it's released. Calm down already.
I say wait until you have one in hand, examine it thoroughly, and then hop onto a Nintendo fan site, blog or other Wii outlet and discuss it with other fans ad nauseum AFTER it's released. - Ninjaneer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Shorties
You mean to tell me that the slot on the bottom of my old NES will connect to a famicom disk system? - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I thought all that "the base is the PSU" stuff was debunked. They toyed with the idea, but they decided to go with a traditional PSU brick so that people could set it up either vertical or horizontal. Plus, half the advatage of ahving an external PSU is moving heat away from the main system components, an advantage that you lose by putting the external PSU right under the system.
Seems like if they are going through all this trouble to make a small, quiet, cool running machine putting the PSU underneath it would be pretty dumb. - Zeroplus, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14Could be the real SD card slot. That is if Nintendo was lying about the front flap.
- daceofhrts, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11heh. I found a secret slot on the PS3 too. Check it out!
http://brandednewb.blogspot.com/2006/07/new-ps3-slot-found.html - birch25, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6gotta love the three expansion slots underneath my cube that never went to use...
isn't that a weird spot for an expansion, though, on the wii? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's were the bacon goes.
- avatarish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That could be where the Wii clicks into the stand...
- l0rdn1k0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1probably just a USB port for addons.
- xGrill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"erhaps its a flash memory expantion port?"
yes or maybe its an easy acess mod chip slot!
dupe - championchap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1perhaps its a flash memory expantion port? just plug and play
who knows.. to be honest.. its probably something very uninteresting.. - Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5maybe that's just used to pop a larger slot open?
- Hawkeye1980, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2water outlet? ;)
- valan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know the Wii is smaller than it looks, I think it's too small for an sd slot. Maybe mini or micro, but there's really no point in using those.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The Gamecube has three expansion ports. One for the Gameboy Player, one for the Modem/Broadband adapter, and the third one is not used yet. Even in Japan, the third expansion port is unused, which would be a first I believe. The Famicom, SFC and N64 all used their slots in Japan even though in America they didn't.
- urdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ehh, maybe it pops open for the DVD player dongle?
- NV0U, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with you on the snaps. Just saw some images over at gamestop.com on the "tell me when the wii is up for preorder" page and it shows the console out of the base. The "slot" this guy is all excited about is right where there are two notches on the base.
Besides that, who in his right mind is going to put a slot for SD cards in a spot on the case that is going to be a pain in the butt to get to? The "slot" that is shown is going to require some pain in the butt juggling to insert/remove a card if that is where it is. Nintendo is not that dumb and any usability dude that designed such an awkward placing for a user accessible port is in need of a good dope slap.
Therefore, I call this whole story bunk. - dievel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This could just be a little opening so you could put your finger/nail in it to open a hidden slot.
- thebraineater, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3maybe it's where the stand connects to it. There is that weird stand that it sits on. Blank DS slot would be cool. idk
- yellowjersey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0about downloading games to your ds...it doesn't use sd's. the ds's cards are slightly bigger than an sd.
- TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No its a com port that needs to have its own IRQ and memory space that the bios needs set up manually and windows needs to be told manual assignment cause it always mess up if it tries to do it on its own, and if you get it wrong it doesn't work and it tries to set the com port for your mouse the same IRQ as your new com port in your ISA slot so now your mouse doesn't work so you have to go through the control panel with your keyboard to even try and fix it!!! Then you wind up going nuts so you take the com port card out, AND START ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!!!
Sorry old Windows 95 day flashback with the PCMCIA idea. Sorry... - WolfwoodX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I love how they "hid" it on the exterior for everyone to see.
- rnbwbrt4eva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahaha that thing is awesome (except the people who just mess up the whole board... jerks..)
- televisible, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It is not a slot but a vent to where air get out.
- etempest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most likely just expansion slot.. for who knows what.
The original Nintendo had one at the bottom that was never used.
Cool thing is with info :) it's a mystery so let the speculation continue. - Masterhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks just big enough for a DS card or a memory card that would fit into a camera.
- EquesArdor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Am I the only one who remembered the DVD player add-on that has yet to be unveiled? >_>
Seriously... it could just be a slot for the DVD add-on to plug into. - JeremiahLBurns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know this comment got a bit buried, but it's not so crazy. I worked in automotive diagnostic equipment manufacturing for five years. Such covers for screws aren't uncommon. (Especially in electronics)
That having been said, I'm more inclined to think that it is:
a) SD slot
b) Serial port a la laptops (Think external drives for laptops connected via a cable)
c) Nothing - SystmBetatester, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yea this is probably the stupidest speculation ive seen in a long time, to have a slot in that place is just rediculous, it would seem to me nintendo did alot more research on the system this time then they ever have in the past. my conclusion? its not a damn slot at all. its a clip to hold the base onto the wii. and seeing how the picture was lobbed off before the front of the base theres no way to tell if theres clips there.... but im going with my theory.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Um... I used to use the bottom of my SNES for a device to load games from a floppy...
Had to pop in a regular cartridge, load the floppy when the prompt came up and I was set! All the latest games! No emulation =) - MrDan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Could be something as simple as a dust cover for a cooling fan.
Lets you slide it out so you can clean the dust off.
Either way, the pictures dont show much really..... - TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Replace the toast with a butt-load of cash being consumed and you got it right.
- theamo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There's no way a ds game will go there. Why for? And ow would you control it? Maybe you could use the wiimote as stylus, but ds has also got more buttons...
Also, downloading games (demos) to DS will be done through wifi, that's all of it. - HarmanSmith, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Looks like a flathead slot to pop the panel on/off for maintnence by Nintendo. There probably aren't any visible external screws and that is the first step to get inside.
- blankblix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah its hard to come to any real conclusion without definitive final casings. We probably won't know until the day before it ships :(
