I recompiled it under jdk1.5.0_06. Maybe you need JRE 1.5.0.x? I haven't really touched Java in a while so I can't suggest much else.
@ schrags
It's like a zen garden. There's really no point to it except to play around and see how things flow. One thing I love doing is stopping the Time (Speed x 0) and setting Pen size to 32. Then I paint Wall over the entire area. Next change pen size to 2-4 and use eraser to dig tunnels in the wall. It lets you simulate pipelines, drains, clogs etc. Pretty fun.
There's a lot of other things you can do, especially with the namekuji. Namekuji is the blobby slug thing that grows when it soaks up water and shrinks when salt is added. Plants grow with water and sprouts shed water when you pour salt on them. Cera is wax and burns slowly. If you fill a cera bowl with oil and set the bottom of the cera to fire, it takes a while before the fire gets to the oil, but when it does, everything burns up pretty fast. - alexp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I modified imalive's directions for playing it locally so it is easier.
1) Download the file http://chir.ag/stuff/sand/sand7.jar
2) Open notepad (or some other text editor) and paste: java -jar sand7.jar sand7
3) Save this as a file with a .bat extension.
4) Put both files in a folder and double click the .bat file to run it. - chime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Tiny version (400x480) was on Fark yesterday: http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=1826196
I made it bigger (960x640) and rehosted it on a faster server without all those non-english unicode/html characters. See the Fark thread for hints on what you can do with it. - imalive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4here's how to get the game working locally:
download the jar file:
http://chir.ag/stuff/sand/sand7.jar
execute it from the command line:
java -jar sand7.jar sand7 - chime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you want to make this go forever, try this:
1. Stop Time=x0
2. Use Pen sizex32 and paint entire area with Sprout
3. Stop sand/water/salt/oil = x0
4. Use Pen sizex8 to draw circle with Plant
5. Draw 3-5 diagonals across the circle with Plant
6. Paint a little fire in the middle of the circle where Plant diagonals intersect
Example: http://www.writsoft.com/~ninti/Sand3.jpg - matx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wouldnt it be easier to make the jar file executable!
- SushiK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The best eternaly repeating patern for me is this:
Fill the space with sprout
Hit it with one small spot of Purple??? and let it burn out
This should give you a very nice rainfall effect
Now start some plant and let it grow about 1/3rd the screen
then start a small fire in the plant
It won't go as long as the 'Carved Path' method, but it looks much better. - Pensketch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any advice for a Mac OSX user who would like to run this locally, yet knows nothing about Java? Other than "Get Windows".
- chime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just to be clear, I didn't make this applet. I just changed it a bit to be larger than it originally was and hosted it on my server without any ads/crap so that I could play it from anywhere.
@ trejkaz
I think you're right. This isn't a game. It's more like a toy. Because as a kid I never really played games but I loved my toys - construction kits, legos, brick-o-built (rare lego-style brick kit which kicked ass). I'd spend hours and hours playing with my toys. Never really enjoyed playing video games as much as most kids. It all makes sense now :) Thanks! - JStrider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if you turn up the amount of oil falling and light the falling stream it will stay burning
- 82DaveMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the best game I have EVER played except the GTA series. I make it a kinda god game and puzzle game in one. My centrino 1.6 laptop is running 100% and I won't be having children now! It reminds me of tetris and I declare this better than Tetris (gonna get me a Multi-Linux Java rig for this game).
I think a Chinese person made this and hats off! Well it beats getting beaten for trying to find out your recent history! (does anyone know who made it? gonna google it.)
Just found the version xavierenigma2 mentioned and is awesome! ( sandgame.50webs.com )
Make sure your case /CPU/GPU/PSU fans are not dusty prior to running this game and don't allow it to run in the background when not playing it! - pernskills, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1plant green needs to be changed to a less crappy color
- _Simplistic_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice and fun.
- slickfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wait...do any of you watch diggnation? this was on the show close to the begining
- JamesNewton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This reminds me of "life" the cellular automation game, but I can't seem to make any self replicating automata in it. Has anyone figure out a way to e.g. keep the oil burning forever? If so, then I think I could make the plant "eat" the water then burn down automatically when it reaches a flame at the top...
- shoeshine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love making multiple bowls and filling each one with oil, then link them together with fuses for a giant chain reaction. Plants make a good fast fuse, cera a good slow fuse. If you put a dot of plant matter and a spout at the bottom of the bowl, then having a cera fuse leading to that dot of plant matter, you can light the cera fuse and see if the plant can reach the top of the spout before the cera reaches the plant, and get the reward of burning the oil.
- wizgha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Darn... this is so addictive.
- groupofone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1zen rock paper scissors.
fire eats plants.
purple destroys everything but plants.
game beats free time into submission. - FitFinlay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what the hell is with the star?
- carlwis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No Digg. There is no hydraulic pressure. I made a U-bend and filled it with water from the left side and the water only levels out at the bottom of the right side, it doesn't fill to level up with the left side.
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow. what a waste of ***** time! i'm supposed to be catching up on homework over the xmas break! i just flushed 2hrs! OMG!
this thing rox!!! - hax0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this game is worse than a virus! It has the same effect anyway, how many thousands of dollars in lost productivity has this game caused?!
I wasted at least an hour, but I really didn't keep track of how much time! - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"reload"
- BMan12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there just needs to be a "Clear All and Restart" button
- beelz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0heres mine
http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/8166/sand8zk.jpg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I make a wall about half way up all the way across then make ground out of the wall, then make a little town, fill the top half with water, erase a bit and watch the town flood.
- SimpleMan46, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Fun toy, but I wish it was a bit more realistic. For instance... Oil should float to the surface of water. Sand should sink. Salt should dissolve.
Maybe somebody could make an updated version. - ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would be nice if they simulated water pressure...
- Biohacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is got to be the coolest Java game I have ever seen! wow!
- ComputerWiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMG! There are other games similar to this!
Check this out! It has people!!

- socokoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0load: class sand7 not found
- Splendor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried following AlexP's instructions for running the game locally, but it doesn't work & my folder doesn't have anything titled sand7.jar in it. I'm assuming this is the issue, but need some help fixing it. Has anyone else got it running locally?
- ilpadre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I spent the whole night playing - fantastic game!
http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/2674/sand5nu.jpg - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Step 1. Time = 0
Step 2. Fill screen with salt using 32x Brush
Step 3. Release the Namakuji
Step 4. Time = 1
Step 5. ...
Step 6. FIREWORKS :) - JAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, 3 days of work down the drain, TY
- markg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0here is mine, i turned off all the elements and created water spouts that grow the "garden." i filled one crevice with oil and created a wick with the cera and lit it. once it burns down, the whole thing goes up in flames.
too much fun: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/markg/sandgame.jpg - SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The godamn star expoded and broke everything in its PATH!!!
- AbsentLight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1^^ Yes! If you are non-conformist then you can fit in with the cool people. Great! Now by being non-conformist you have just conformed to a group! *****.
By the way, i think going to rehab is the appropriate action for me to take after playing this game for >2 hours. - joebrodie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This better be on diggnation or I am going to be pissed! Time well spent, says I...
- Bratsche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sorry. This is simply freaking awesome. The interactions between the water (spout), plant, and fire are really cool. Try putting a small bit of plant on top of a block of cera. Have a little spout feed the plant so it slowly grows. Then, put the fire on the bottom of the cera. It will slowly eat through the cera, and then destroy the whole plant in seconds. Mwhahahaha!
- dufarb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what would it take to set this as a screen saver?
- 5m0k3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a great way to relieve stress, entertain yourself for extended periods of time, and serve just about every other purpose you desire.
- tmanka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Damn whoever posted this, I just wasted an hour...F*ck!
- sladoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOW This is one of the finest most pointless games I have ever played! (2 hours spent on it)
- Splendor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nevermind...I fixed it. My computer was saving the sand7.jar as .zip instead. I just renamed it & it works fine now.

to bad its not a screen saver . someone should do that - icu_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some games claim to have a 'sandbox mode', but this one really delivers.
Any chance of getting the other versions in a similar format? If this could find its way onto the DS I'd be likely to pick one up :). http://www.filefarmer.com/icu/icuSand.jpg - ComputerWiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oops. The code above apeared as actual code on the page. Just add < brackets to the code below on each line.
applet code="sand7" archive="sand7.jar" width="960" height="640">
/applet> - ComputerWiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'd kill for the source code"
Just download the jar/mp3 file. The source is in there. I used JBuilder to take a peak. :) -
