- deuceswilde, on 10/12/2007, -8/+61I disagree, I was shocked by how dramatically public sentiment seemed to shift against Sony, but it appears that the average consumer was turned off by the price and perceived lack of quality in the console. It's going to be hard for Sony to find anything that will put them ahead of the Xbox since most of the games people really want to play will come out on both consoles. Without a killer app, amazing graphics or anything that is dramatically better than the 360 right now no one would look at them objectively and decide to spend $200 more for the PS3 (your average consumer). In this case I think Sony has their work cut out for them if they want to win this generation.
- belko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32no, alot of people were sitting on the fence about buying a console until PS3 arrived. Now they find that PS3 really isnt any more powerful and it costs ALOT more. now 360 = no-brainer.

I'm tired of people saying that the ps3 and 360 are about the same when the 360 hddvd player is added. Tagging it on to the 360 makes it no more of a game machine, it is just an option. Considering the format feuding going on Microsoft made the right choice since they can always stop making hddvd drives if it fails, If bluray fails Sony and ps3 owners are stuck with paying for a hd drive.
I would rather wait on the format war and the 360 gives me that choice. - OwenX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27I'm sorry, the 360 does not have that high of a failure rate. Like many console launches it was bumpy with some problems, but now, they've fixed most hardware failure issues and most of the disc scratching problems. The 360's sold in stores now work 100% and the games are great fun. Despite games not being all about graphics, if you can get both (Gears of War) all the better.
360 = win. - deuceswilde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20It may be more powerful but no one, not even Sony has bothered to utilize it. All of the current 360 games look better than the PS3 ones and without a visible improvement people aren't going to care whose side the "numbers" are on when it comes to spec sheets, it doesn't make the games any better.
- sardion2000, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28At the rate 360's are selling, Wii and PS3 will never beat Microsoft.

Here are the NPD numbers for November.
DS - 918,000
PS2 - 664,000
GBA - 641,000
X360 - 511,000
Wii - 476,000
PSP - 412,000
PS3 - 197,000

Here are the overall numbers.
360 - 8,149,435
PS3 - 396,901
Wii - 1,239,782 - cyanid3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20"Microsoft has ***** themselves on their quality control, Xbox 360's fail a lot."
I'd love it if you could expand on that. I live in a tropical country, which means high ambient temperatures. On top of that, my 360 is placed next to my PC so I can use my PC monitor to play it. And all I have is a fan in my room.
The 360 chugs along happily for hours of Gears of War and PGR3 :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19And with the HD-DVD player...it's already the centre of my home theatre
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17So some of them fail, it doesnt mean people arent getting replacements. saying that some of the 360s fail... which is a vast minority of them...means that there is nothing to judge is just closed-minded. YOUR point is a moot point.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16@Euphoia - Too bad there are a lot of people who aren't interested in the next-gen HD formats. A lot of people are going to see two gaming machines sitting side-by-side, both next gen and one with more games than the other. They're going to pick the one that's cheaper.
I used to think selling the PS3 as a "cheap" Blu-ray player was smart, until I realized that no one really cared except for those of us into home theater. The average consumer is happy with DVD and is not willing to pay any extra two hundred dollars for a format that's not proven. At least with the 360, they're given the option to invest in it later. - skywake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@sardion2000
true... but that's not exactly reliable. The PS3 and Wii just launched and demand has been larger then supply for both. So it is likely that all comparisons between Wii & PS3 sales are purely how much they could ship. The 360 has been out for a while, so there are no problems with supply outweighing demand. If I wanted a 360 I could just go out and get one.
The only statistic that is worth anything at the moment is games/console sales i.e. "the tie ratio". A quick google search brings up some stats (whether they are reliable is another story)
Wii ~ 3
PS3 ~ 1.5
360 ~ 3.9 - mark_in_bc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12We have both systems and to tell the truth load times are faster on the 360 and we prefer the 360 controller because of the lack of the rumble feature on the PS3. The graphics look a little different on each system but I would not say that one is better than the other. We have only compared Call of duty 3 on both but as far as I'm concerned if a title comes out on both platforms we're buying the 360 version.
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Why did you buy a 360 if you didn't know which game(s) you like?
- max420, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12That would be awesome, I would love to see a Final Fantasy exclusively on the Xbox 360
- Inverno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10In console wars "winning" simply means being in the majority of homes. The console with the largest saturation = the console that gets the greatest attention by the devs. With devs comes expansive libraries, a stronger position to negotiate exclusive titles, and usually higher quality cross platform ports. It doesn't kill the competition, but it does tend to provide the greater value. Consider PS2 vs Dreamcast, PS1 vs Saturn, etc.
Whereas nVidia vs ATI 'war' is fairly moot since both cards will play the same games, consoles do not. - gotmunchiez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14"Microsoft Xbox 360 is not really competing with the Wii"
Very true, and a smart move on Nintendos part. They realised that going head to head with Sony and Microsoft in a hardware war would probably see them go the way of Sega. Nintendo decided to target a different market to take them out of direct competition and it looks like it'll pay off - stvnly, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16What exactly does "weaker than expected sales" mean? The Wii is selling out as fast as they're shipping them out. 2 weeks after launch and people are still lining up the night before in some cases to get Wiis at Target.
And this article doesn't take into account Japan, where the 360 isn't doing so great. - fatnutz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11There's more money than you can imagine to be made or lost in the Japanese market. If the 360 wanted to cement it's place as #1 in the US market M$ could offer Xbox's at what the Japanese pay for them.
Wii's are in a hell of a lot shorter supply, and are in higher demand than most people claim. Have fun getting one before the holidays at retail price.
360 is the winning choice at the moment...But in no freaking way does the first 2-3 weeks of these new console releases say who's gonna come out on the top in a year, 2 years, 4 years, etc. . A lot of you talking ***** now will end up on the other side of the fence in due time.
this being said 360 is my choice for this gen as well, but it's too early to be calling it like this. - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Right now I think M$ is actually ***** up by not having a killer app during this xmas season"
Umm, yeah, but at least they have consoles. If you think thats a ***** up then what do you think about the PS3. Europe and Australia dont even get it til March, and the places that do have it will have major shortages. Im pretty sure MS isnt concerned at all. - chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Unless you want to ignore a market that is a little less than half the size of the United States(possibly bigger than that considering that the Japanese loves their gizmos), so yes, alot of people in the industry do care about Japan.
Remember, Sony and Nintendo are still Japenese companies. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Most of the industry standard TODAY is pivoted around Xbox and what it's done in the past. Console gaming wouldn't be as good as it is today without the 'Box.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nope, i'm getting one for christmas too =)
- lazejanis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Strange article - yes microsoft have a lead but basically if the wii continues to sell as it does now it will pass the 10 million within the next couple of months. The "war/race" isn't completed until Christmas next year if you ask me.

I was on the fence, but not I am waiting for the price drop and then halo 3. Gears is sweet, but I got a wii, so i will wait. That way i can get gears of war "players choice" or something for 20 bucks when halo 3 comes out. - OwenX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The wii is bound to get more playtime right now, it was just released.
...Pretty easy.. - Sakumi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I wrote "I just don't think Sony will be able to produce 10,000,000 consoles in a 1 year period." not 10,000
o.0 - Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I got one a few days ago. I could have had the PS3 - an employee was walking around offering it to people in the store. Personally, theres no point though - no real content for it and it costs too much for what I can get out of it right now. When theres a nice drop in price I will get one (maybe in a year an a half). I would have had a Wii up to about 5 days ago when I decided to wait till spring for stock/more games.
Anyone sitting on the fence would be well advised to check it out. Its got games this time (and a lot of them) that issue kept the Xbox original as the only last gen product I didn't get. Live is amazing - I knew what it could do but I didn't know it did it so well. The controller is fantastic and it plays my dvds, video files on writable media and recognizes my MP3 player instantly for music playing (does anyone know how to get music from a portable player ONTO the 360s HD?).
All in all a great system so far - and this coming from someone who's played/owned them all since the Atari/Commodore64 days. - Aharoni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wrong system? how can you buy a wrong system?
You buy the console that has the games that interest you.
I haven't bought any new-generation system (because none of them were launched in my country, including the 360), but I know that the Xbox 360 is the "right" one for me. Just the games that are out today are worth it (once the system has a price drop from $880 and each game would cost less than $100).
I mean, Gears of Wars, Oblivion, Dead Rising are a good-enough reason to buy the system today. Add to that Halo 3, Lost Planet, GTA 4, Halo wars, Blue dragon... the list goes on.
Even if the Wii will "win" this war, I'd still be happy with such a purchase... when it won't have a ridiculous price-tag, that is (I don't even want to THINK what will be the PS3's pricetag... I assume somewhere along the lines of $1200 and more) - cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Apparently you missed this article - http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-348-1.htm
- Sakumi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Looking at production alone, Sony will just fall short on numbers. It seems like it will sell every console made for quite some time, however.
Nintendo seems to be selling every console it can ship out as well. Of course price point helps, but also so does some good marketing. I think as far as plain numbers are concerned, Nintendo may be a huge contender to be 'best seller' overall, even with Microsoft's year alone on the market.
Xbox seems to be selling well due to its high points like large game library, good online service (tested and streamlined now, a year later), and not to mention on-par graphics quality with PS3 (current gen titles I guess.. I still am yet to see if PS3 can produce game imagery that will simply just blow xbox out of the water. It may just be too close to call on that).
Xbox, however, is not flying out the doors like the Wii's. This is where Wii may win, cheap price point, and innovation. Since it's so easy to obtain, the Wii may just out-sell the Xbox by mid year, unless it loses momentum. Due to the fact that Wii is made of not-so-next-gen hardware, it means that they will be able to produce a fairly large ammount of systems, and fast.
I just don't think Sony will be able to produce 10,000,000 consoles in a 1 year period. The production process seems to have problems.... especially since they finalized their hardware right around the time Nintendo did if I recall correctly. This will ultimately make them the "loser", however, they won't be a failure by any means. I just wonder how they ever plan to make money with that system.. honestly.
Where do I stand? Am I a fanboy? Not really. I own a Wii and a Xbox360. At this time the Wii gets most the playtime, even due to its non-HD graphics. I am leaning towards a Wii victory overall, but, I don't think any manufacturer will be hurt in the pocketbook like Sony will. I hope they just don't let everyone down who purchased their PS3. I really hope the Sony crowd will get to enjoy their system, cuz hey, the hardware isn't that bad, the company is just screwing up atm (or has been for a year or so lol). ;) - japface, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Xbox, xbox, XBOX, those are acceptable. xBox is not.
- sardion2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@ skywake
7 Million in the hole is gonna be tough to beat with Halo 3, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed and GTA 4 on the Horizon. Halo 3, while being the only Exclusive on the list, will account for at least one million console sales(and that is being conservative). When ME, AC and GTA4 come out and they've dropped the price(probably just in time for Halo 3 or MSG4 to preemp a possible PS3 comeback)...well...that 7 million is looking like an extremely solid lead no matter how "reliable" the statistics are atm.
BTW, I had no problem scoring a Wii. I just lined up yesterday 5 minutes before the store opened with 10 other people and we all got one(the EB games in my 'hood received their 3rd batch yesterday). They kept turning away people looking for a PS3 cuz they aren't expecting another shipment until the 14th(the last shipment they recieved according to the cashier was the initial launch consoles). - TellarHK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Honestly, given that the Wii has sold anyplace between 1/10th to 1/6th the number of Xbox 360's in just the past few weeks, depending on which sources you're listening to, combined with the dramatic price difference between it and the Xbox 360 in any useful configuration (Read: Not Core) I honestly believe that time is going to bear out the Wii as the "winner" in regards to installed base.
Why? It's cheap, and to be honest, more importantly it's -fun-. I've had a blast playing WiiSports and Twilight Princess since getting mine this past Monday. My 360? Sure, it has some definite appeal, but it's not nearly as visceral an experience as the Wii offers.
You'll see a lot of gamers with a 360 and a Wii, a number of families with just a Wii and probably not -too- many Wii/PS3 households outside the hardcore gamer segment. Remember, at least for the next year or so HDTV's are -not- as popular as people often think they are. Most people still look at HDTV as a big expense that they're waiting on to come down in price, especially with all the buzz about things like screwed implementations (1080i, Sony?) and confusing connectivity. (HDMI? HDCP? Component? What?) (Note: I know the difference of course, but ask yourself: Does your sister / mother / niece?)
The hardcore already have their 360's. The hardcore are still trying to get PS3's, but Sony just can't meet demand because they screwed the pooch severely. Wiis on the other hand, are just now starting to hit the non-pre-order shelves, even if for relatively short spans of time before they get snapped up (often by the employees that weren't able to get them earlier) and once again cause a brief shortage.
My guess is that within a year, we'll see the Wii overtake or at least be within a million units of the 360. In July, Nintendo estimated sales of 4 million by the end of 2006, and 7 million by March. If they can keep up that kind of production for just a few months longer, they'll blow the doors off the 360 - and I think the PS3 just may die a slow and almost-enough death. - finnor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5At this point, not next spring, not next year, at this point if I HAD to choose one console, it would still be xbox 360. I feel Sony believed the original xbox was a joke of a console, and they felt they had little competition and in turn they handicapped their creativity in terms of console development for the ps3.
Microsoft learned from their mistakes of their first gaming console, (dont forget the playstation started on nintendo, theyve had a lot of time to think console development as well) and vastly improved their outlook of console gaming. Little things like the 'exhale' philosophy of their system design, to the international board that worked on the 360, etc etc, all these little things I feel are appreciated whether its subconscious or not.
Im not even going to go into Wii because Nintendo doesnt want to consider it competition, they have their own path/ideas and i respect that.
Ive lost respect for Sony over the years, but I still think they have some great stuff going for them, I feel they give their inhouse developers a good amount of time and money without too harsh of a deadline, and great games like shadow of the colossus and that team will always be somewhat unique to Sony due to Japanese loyalty. - milhousebambata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@stvnly
146 Xbox 360 games released in just over 12 months. Thats about 11 games per month. Of course some were ***** (as every platform has), but that is a pretty decent library. - jaydee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I take it you didn't really mean to say 360 there, they are available everywhere
- Leo55, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9They already did. (With Nintendo in its own world of course)
Sony already lost the lock on 3rd party.
Microsoft have a wide range of exclusive games along with cross platforms games on it.
Its only a matter of time, that Sony piss off big timers and the next MGS will be on the 360. - angelp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If you bought a system you were happy with it and it did everything you wanted, how is that the wrong system? Just because something isn't number 1 doesn't make it "wrong".
P.S. How was the fact that the kid was black relevant? And "normal wigger type"? "Nerdy gamers". You like to put people categories, don't you? - OwdenBowden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Lighten up Francis
- kawa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4NPD just released its November sales data, Xbox 360 is #4, with 0.5+ million sales; NDS scored 0.9+ million and PS2/GBA both attained 0.6+ million. The article states "Has Xbox 360 already won the console war?" My question is "Has the next generation console war really started?"
Moore's take on the statistic of "10M => win the console war" is not a solid inference. First of all, none of the consoles before had taken such worldwide launch; secondly it's not difficult to find a statistic rule that leans on one's side but whether that rule will hold is often not an easy answer. I take his statement as 90% public relation:-)
This console war, IMHO, is more complicated than before at least in two angles:
1. There's a media format war alongside: Blue Ray vs. HD DVD
2. It can be three way war (all consoles) or two plus one (360+Wii vs. PS3+Wii) war
DFC Intelligence (a marketing research firm) noted this past September that a winner won't appear until 2-3 years later, and even so the winner probably won't be as dominant as last generation (PS2 case). I totally agree with them. It's fun to predict who will win, but it's probably more realistic to predict when Christmas in 2007 and 2008 comes. - Aharoni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4People assume that the demand for the Wii will stay as high as it is.
To remind you, Microsoft had a really tough time to meet Xbox 360 demand for several months after the launch.
Both Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony had a lot of time prior to the launches to rack up the amount of people waiting in line for the consoles. Exactly how many of them are lining up for each console is problematic to say. Only after all 3 consoles are available in retail for anybody to just go and pick one up - thats when the volume of sales will be important in predicting which one will be the "winner".
Just because the Wii is selling like crazy today doesn't mean it will sell like crazy 5 or 6 months from now. - Pulse_Instance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It has been a race all along, the first goal measurable by us was the release date and Microsoft won that by a long shot. The next goal seems to be 10,000,000 consoles and it looks like the lead Microsoft has from their first win will ensure their reaching 10,000,000 consoles before anyone else. Sony could have made the race even for themselves if they had not made some pretty big mistakes during the first leg of the race.
- biochem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I dont get the hype around 10million units. Yeah thats alot, but not in comparison to the total amount sold in the past war. I understand that the first company to sell 10million last time won the war, but i think that is hardly a good comparison this time around with such a vast pricing difference.
I have a 360 and i have played the wii, and although the wii is fun to play with friends and everything, you cant beat the game play on the 360. I think the wii will sell more units than the 360 in the end. My reasoning is because the wii appeals to everyone (even the hardcore gamer as a secondary console). So on top of all the people who want a wii as their primary console, you will also have a significant amount of gamers wanting one as a secondary console because of its price. Unfortunately, this does not work the other way as a 360 or ps3 being someones secondary console. - Lovecore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5HD ready is a pretty good point that 360 has, and with the release of the HD - DVD rom for this holiday season, it seems that they do have a commanding lead untill spring.
- buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree. What does winning mean anyway? Selling the most or making the most money? If it is the latter, I think even the most rabid fanboy would agree Nintendo with their non-subsidized hardware route has won/will win. If you go by the former definition of victory then it is too early to tell for the following reasons:
1.) The X360 has completely bombed in Japan. The early reports point to Blue Dragon helping, but not being the miracle it was hoped to be.
2.) Supply has not caught up with demand for the Wii and PS3 (this should have been the first reason)
3.) Japanese Developer's that will touch the X360 are few and far between. With the Wii's Japanese sales it is one console J-developers can't ignore. PS3 by virtue of being Japanese will also get much more developer attention than the 360. What this means is the Wii (and possibly PS3) will have a greater variety of games (Eastern/Western mix). The Wii has already distinguished itself from the comp, but this will be the biggest difference between the PS3 and X360.
The X360 may sell the most consoles, but these were just a few reasons why it may not. In the end all the companies are winner$, right. - sardion2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Actually 360 is still outselling the PS3 and Wii according to November's NPD numbers.

If you're a PS3 owner, I'll bet you'll buy the next Final Fantasy and the next MGS when they come out.
The point is, every console has sequels... Nintendo's franchises have been around longer, so they might seem more annoying... But in 10 years you'll probably be seeing Halo 6 and GOW 4...
And even if the games have the same names, they very often are quite different games... For example, each mario game always brings tons of cool innovations... - AzraelKans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hmm..
