- Crashwithuhk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+107If it makes the cost of the system cheaper then good. I'm looking to buy a video game system. Not a wanna-be multimedia center. It may have been a cool feature back in the PS2 days when DVD was fairly new but now it's pretty cheap and easy to get a DVD player so there's no need for it in the Wii.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+73Exactly. Everybody had a dvd player by now. I don't want to pay the extra royalties they tack onto each box to pay the MPAA.
- skywake, on 10/12/2007, -7/+61why are people digging him down?
Nintendo has said from the start that the Wii wont have DVD playback as standard, If i remember correctly it will be in the form of a possible USB style update. It still reads DVD because that is its primary storage media, they just took the DVD Video playback stuff out to reduce cost. If this is news to anyone they clearly dont know what the Wii is. IT'S A CONSOLE!
how many people who are going to buy the Wii dont have a DVD Player yet? I have 3.. wait.... 5 DVD Playback devices, and i dont need another one. - kennyGS13, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50Two disc formats, one slot: Instead of a tray, a single, innovative, self-loading media bay will play both 12-centimeter optical discs used for the new system as well as Nintendo GameCube discs. Owners will have the option of equipping a small, self-contained attachment to play movies and other DVD content.
proof seen here: http://www.nintendo.com/newsarticle?articleid=02ea1a40-ac09-4cdf-9548-91e5a4e78746 - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48This feature is almost useless anymore, so its removal is inconsequential. I already have a DVD player, and if I really needed a new one, I could get one from Wal-Mart for $40. I'd rather use my Wii to play games.
...Erm... Still not used to that name yet, though. - davidhildreth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41i care about the wii playing dvds about as much as i care about it playing betamax tapes
- jawbreaker4fs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37I'm just upset that it won't play betamax.
- Crashwithuhk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Well it would be a different case. The PS3 is pushing the Blu Ray as a major feature. If they decided to not include Blu Ray playback and you couldn't play movies then using such an expensive format would be completely useless and stupid.
Now say if the Wii's DVD format was the main reason it cost 600 bucks and they decided to remove the ability to play DVD movies then yes, I would be angry, but that isn't the case. - Smwbigboss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Hell, I saw them in Shoprite for $20. (Yes, the supermarket)
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31It's funny how this was such a huge issue when the Gamecube first shipped, but now everyone just shrugs it off as being no big deal. Of course with DVD players now costing about the same as a package of razor blades, it really puts it into perspective.
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35@skywake...
i completely agree, as for me, i have 9 things in my house that will play DVDs
3 standalone DVD players
1 portable DVD player
3 laptops
1 dekstop computer (mine)
most of the time i just use my computer
DVD playback in the Wii is not a big priority for me
//edit: i have 10 DVD playback devies: the tenth is my PS2 - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Jerry: Hey, wanna watch a DVD?
Ben: Sure, how about Star Wars.
Ben: Jerry, what are you doing?
Jerry: Oh, pretty much every box under my TV can play DVDs, even my radio so i'm picking randomly.
Ben: You picked your alarm clock...
Jerry: Yeah it can do DVDs too, only like 3 bucks on Amazon.
Do we really need another DVD player? - pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25This was announced as being removed months ago. Nintendo would have to pay some kind of licensing fee in order to have DVD capability. Rather than have every user pay a little more for something only a few people want/need, there will be a component sold separately to enable DVD playback. That way, only the people who want it will have to pay for it. Sounds like a good system to me.
- Anth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Given that I'm going to have a Xbox360 next to it with the HD-DVD add-on, I'm really not that interested in watching DVDs on my Wii anyways. If it saves $10 or gives some nintendo some extra profit, then sure, go ahead.
(God I hate the name of this console...) - NLindz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24I don't know, I think its something that would be nice to have but it isn't going to be a deal breaker for me by any means. Would just be nice.
- mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Game systems and DVD playback don't really go together anyway. My PS2 is probably the worst DVD player I've ever had.
- phantom42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24except that the wii isnt losing a promised feature. the submitter is mistaken.
from an article almost a year old:
http://cube.ign.com/articles/522/522559p2.html
Q: Will Revolution be able to play DVD movies?
A: Yes. However, DVD-movie playback will not be available out of the box. Revolution owners must buy an additional dongle that inserts in front of the machine in order to watch Hollywood DVD movies on the platform - LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I guess I'll just have to use either:
A) standalone DVD player
B) PS2
C) Xbox
D) Xbox 360
E) DVD-ROM Drive on PC
Seriously, who cares. Like Crash said, keep the cost down. - NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18The 3 people who don't own DVD players will be so upset.
- Familyguykiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19If it comes with a dvd player ill get ride of the one in my room if it does not no big deal. A dvd player does not really matter when there so cheap to buy.
- Sheir, on 10/12/2007, -11/+27Nintendo never said there would be a DVD feature, and oddly enough.. it's missing! Holy *****!
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Besides, it's probably just software disabled, with the possibility of hacking it to allow DVD playback right over the horizon. No need to actually remove anything from the device, just turn it off in software and forego licensing the DVD DRM.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20solid detective work
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I think the reason no-one is bothered is because everyone has a DVD player already. Cutting a feature everyone already has isn't as bad as cutting a feature that they don't. Having said that, of course there's a certain level of fanboyism involved, but it's not malicious: people are more forgiving of companies they like. I'm not sure it's necessarily hypocritical, it's just human nature.
- ryanscott, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15you mean like how sony is cutting production in half?
- skywake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@coheedcollapse
the difference is... Nintendo never said it would have DVD Playback by default. The reason people get so angry at Sony is because the PS3 was sposed to do everything and every second day they tell us another thing that it cant do. People would have liked the PS3 more if it was cheaper, and Sony was a bit more honest. Not that Nintendo or Microsoft are honest, more that they didnt promice nearly as much as the Sony did.... Nintendo is releacing more details about its console, not dropping stuff off....
;) - NismoDrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10my dvd player on my computers better because of the software it came with. Powerdvd 7 is the *****. I like how it makes like a 720 x 480 widescreen dvd work in 1280 x 1024 resolution at full screen with anti-aliasing on.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Considering you can get a name-brand DVD-RW drive for $30 these days, do you really need to be able to play DVD's on every single box sitting under your TV?
- Sheir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Umm, no, they said there might be an add on later on but they didn't want to include it because plenty of people have a DVD player in their homes.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Don't get me wrong, I certainly hope the remotes include a rechargable battery pack, but if they don't, it's not a big problem to buy a pack of rechargables yourself. They're pretty cheap on eBay.
- shtonkalot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11How are you gonna swing the wii-mote around in a vehicle?
Me thinks you don't really GET the Wii... - ThisIsJames, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11but my dvd player broke...
Plus, a wii is much more attractive than the average dvd player - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I don't mind, my PS2 has a DVD player in it, I only need one thing to play them back and that works for me.
- airencracken, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I hope it doesn't have DVD playback capability. It's a gaming system.
- twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The Wii really doesn't need a dvd player in it. Hopefully nintendo WILL allow you to play video types such as OGM, MKV, MP4, MKV, etc. off of memory cards or external hard drives *crosses fingers*, as well as let you play your own mp3s during certain games.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10There will be a USB add-on last time I heard, but hell, if it is even 20 dollars, I can buy a standalone one.
Its a feature that is not needed....at all.... - igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19SRRY... my PS2 is the 9th not the 10th... go ahead digg down the last comment :C
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I never play movies on my consoles. It burns up the laser/motors prematurely.
- Petarded, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I hope that car is a van with an LCD in the back. Otherwise I have no idea how you could manage on a tiny 7" in-dash screen.
- Germs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Well, kutaragi did say in the beginning that PS3's would be able to output in glorious 1080p and when there's no HDMI output to output that 1080p anymore, it's some reason to be irked. Not to mention a simple HDMI cable isn't included for the higher end PS3 either. And like everyone is saying, DVD players are pretty cheap and most people don't need one in the Wii because they probably already have one.
- EGO822, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Yes, Nintendo did mention the feature. It was listed on their website.
- zacharychaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6well there's better arguments for buying a DVD player then one of the "next gen" DVD players.
Like... uh... actual movies to watch. - floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You know, I could probably print that comment, take it to walmart and ask for a price match and they'd honor it... A lot of my friends work there and they say customers get away with a lot of ***** there.
- doug_brit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Hmm... I've just come to expect it so mark me as one who is surprised by this. As others this isn't a deal breaker, but if the wiimotes run on non-rechargeable batteries, I'll begin to become upset.
- zbtirrell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This was a touch surprising, but I want a DVD player that does HDMI, optical out, and DivX playback with up-conversion. Wii isn't going to do these things, so the $50 toshiba that does do these things is the perfect solution. I echo everyone else's thoughts, keep it out, keep the price as low as possible.
- phantom42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7nintendo has said for quite some time now (from the very beginning, as i recall) that standard DVD movie playback would not be available out of the box. it will be enabled via some sort of dongle.
no big deal. convergence isnt always the answer. the ps2's DVD player was notoriously bad. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What would be better is if it played DivX without any modding!
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love how everyone says "It'll save on the cost" and then immediately follows that with "a DVD player is cheap."
With me it's just a matter of space--small apartment doesn't leave much room for fifty bojillion boxes under my TV. Everyone says the PS2 dvd player is crap... that may be the case, but that crap player has been my only dvd player since the launch. I was hoping that the Wii, being a scrawny little critter, could immediately go to work replacing the behemoth (in comparison) that is my PS2. - Poco, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Um, that's 'cus it's a Sony format. Look for it in the PS4.
