- hypnotoad32, on 07/17/2008, -0/+25Vintage? Feeling old now.
- MrNastyOne, on 07/17/2008, -1/+20Gamers who refer to Street Fighter II as 'vintage' are youngin's who don't know what they're talking about.... now get off my lawn!
- mediaspree, on 07/17/2008, -0/+13I spent most my allowance losing at Street Fighter 2 to Arcade Junkies.
- scabbers, on 07/17/2008, -2/+15Story's relation to E3 = 0 %
- IveGotTheRuns, on 07/17/2008, -1/+11We don't do that here.
- dekuscrub, on 07/17/2008, -1/+10Gamers just like to wax nostalgic by having the original arcade machine with all the cabinet artwork and retro feel. It's the same reason toy collectors spend $1000 on an action figure in the original package ... not to play with it, but to bring back those warm feelings of being young.
- raublekick, on 07/17/2008, -0/+8Hmm... I disagree. But to each his own. We've got 30+ years of gaming behind us now, so there's plenty for everyone. The thing with video games though is that there's no free / legal / easy way to enjoy the classics. You either amass a huge, expensive collection of games, or you emulate (which is illegal and not totally ideal). If I want classic literature, the library has me covered. Classic movies are easy enough to find (even at libraries!). Classic music is also easy to find.
I dread the day when a kid wants to learn more about the origins of videogames, but can't because all the emulation sites are shut down and all the carts are collecting dust in someone's basement. - nstern2, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7How come that sfII cab has a mame sticker on it?
- smoger, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6in response to the first comment on that page
"Can you imagine, bringing your mates round and having 'Street Fighter II' in your living room (I'm sure people of a certain age will all agree with me) would be a) a surefire way to make your friends come and see you all the time b) one of the coolest people around! Seeing that photo certainly brings back memories!"
a friend of mine randomly found a SF2 machine in the trash one day.. he knocked on the door of the house, and they told him it worked and he was welcome to it.. so he brought it back to his house.. cleaned it up a bit.. and had himself a free SF2 cabinet.. it was so great.. many a match was fought on that machine - matt247, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6What about Megaman 9 using 8 bit graphics
- bgrah449, on 07/17/2008, -7/+12Having gone back and tried these games, I've realized nostalgia is better left alone. These games were pioneers, but the game experience has been made incrementally better since then, and not just in terms of graphics.
- smoger, on 07/17/2008, -1/+6you were born in 1985... you didn't grow up with these games.. this article is over your head.
- paulvq, on 07/17/2008, -1/+6Guys, there's a potential kill screen coming up if you're interested.
- stizz, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4In the 6th grade, I lost all my lunch money to the Guantlet II machine at the Albertsons across from my school everyday before class. Too busy feeding my blue wizard quarters, by lunch time, it was "stizz needs food badly".
- avrus, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4There's a large community that has been restoring old arcade cabinets for years. They also have a forum dedicated to helping you perform repairs or restores, or even creating your own arcade cabinet from scratch.
My project:

Build Your Own Arcade Controls (and related forums)
http://arcadecontrols.com - bgrah449, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5That's ridiculous. I didn't grow up with Ms. Pac-man or Arkanoid, you're right. But I did spend a lot of time (and money) on classic arcade games - Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, the Simpsons arcade game, the X-Men arcade game, Area 51.
Furthermore, what the shopowner discusses is having a piece of history, a piece of your childhood. He mentions one (1) game by name the entire time. To which games are you referring?
I could have been born in 1990 or 1900, the idea of owning a piece of your childhood is universal, and owning an arcade game to remind me of fun times I had when I was younger is something that is *definitely* not over my head. - RegalBegal, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4....Or Just goto Laconia and hang out at Funspot for like a day or 5.
- BigPapi, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3You might even get a chance to harass Brian Kuh too.
- Skorme, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3I lost an incredible amount of Tooth Fairy money on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade.
- jarjarwang, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I like video games, but new games are too exciting, affordable, good looking for my taste.
- fandyboy, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Alex Kidd in Miracle World. That's all I'm gonna say.
- riptor666, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2I'd like to own some pinball tables but if I had to have an arcade machine probably a racing game, or perhaps a homemade arcade machine with all my favorites.
- BearinG, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2yeah... in less than 15 seconds..
- foofightrs777, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I was born in 1985 and I grew up with these games. Mostly it was because my family wasn't exactly rich at the time but I thoroughly enjoyed the Atari 5200 as a young kid. I finally got the NES sometime around 1991 or 1992 just in time to enjoy the Genesis/SNES at friends homes.
And I'm sorry I was playing arcade games from the time I could reach the controls. Even if that meant going to the local roller rink to play since the skates gave me an extra few inches so I could hadouken my heart out. - fandyboy, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Good spot. Methinks these machines are not so "vintage" after all.
- Acglaphotis, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2-10%
- Charlotte_Web, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3I agree... every now and then I get the itch to fire up MAME, and I never spend more than 5 or 10 minutes with it before I say, "Meh," and move on.
You're right, it's not just the graphics. After all, I finally got Master of Orion running in Vista, and I can't tell you how many hours I've wasted lately playing it recently. Last year, I was obsessed with X-Com: UFO again. The graphics for these games are better, IMHO, than the sequels that came out for them because they create a better atmosphere for the games, despite the lower resolution. The gameplay is outstanding, and the games are highly accessible.
The problem with arcade games is that they are designed to suck quarters out of your pocket. The business side of arcade games says that time is money, so one quarter equaled about 3 minutes of play, on average; they had to hurry up and kill you off so the next kid can jam his quarter in there. That's so dissatisfying in this day and age, when I can fire up Bioshock and play for many hours at a time without a single death. - trdrstv, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1"Can you imagine, bringing your mates round and having 'Street Fighter II' in your living room..."
Yes I can, I actually did that exact thing. I have a SF2:Champion Edition, TMNT (2 player version though) and a Ms. Pacman cocktail table in my kitchen. The women always go for Ms. Pacman, but it's a fair split from the guys between TMNT and. SF2.
"a friend of mine randomly found a SF2 machine in the trash one day... "
I find this both incredibly disturbing, and incredibly cool. I'm glad that the machine ultimately went to a good home and is appreciated, but the thought that someone would throw out a perfectly working SF2 makes my blood boil. - rockefeller2, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1$.25 vs. $60, not to mention the cost of the console, TV, etc.
Not a very good comparison you made there. - trdrstv, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0Word. That makes 2 of us.
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1It's what Jesus would want.
- BatmanStan, on 12/09/2008, -0/+0A nice pinball machine at home would be great
http://godzillafiguresblog.com - antlerboy, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0being a very avid "vintage" gamer, i'll have to disagree with you. a human being has a limited comprehension to how many actions he can preform at once in a vidogame. classic games usually involve a limited number of actions available so perfecting one or two basic actions can win you the whole game. modern games tend to flood the player with multiple available actions to achieve victory, which sometimes can result in a lowering of difficulty. they then stretch out the game to add as much extra junk that has nothing to do with the original task as possible.
i like my goals to be short and sweet and my tasks to be clearly defined. nothing feels better than doing a no-death run on contra.
i dont have time to be wasting hours and hours away on games anymore. and dont even get me started on level grinding. - trdrstv, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0"Chung Li was hot!!"
Correction - "Chung Li is hot!!"
Not big on the "Alpha" look though... - trdrstv, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0"The problem with arcade games is that they are designed to suck quarters out of your pocket... they had to hurry up and kill you off so the next kid can jam his quarter in there. You can go for hours in Bioshock without dying, because it's piss easy even on HARD. You can play Donkey Kong for hours one one quarter, but you actually have to be good at it. - Durii, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0My *****.
- Cyberdactyl, on 07/17/2008, -3/+2For one of the most highly rated games of the late 1990's was Battlezone.
That game is now available for free download, and most importantly, can be PLAYED online for free with a very active community.
