- codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -7/+39All valid points :) However, I believe its the overall structure and clan system that is key. It isn't just about levels and scenarios but "how" it all comes together as a team-based system.
The fact that this works can be seen in any MLG Pro event. If the networking and clan-based battles were not fleshed out and perfected it would make a very poor league play system.
Barring the 12 year old banter that may or may not occur in many games :-)
However, I would also argue that the system and design should already be in place given the upcoming Beta. The loss of their design lead should not impact the game system now - maybe six to eight months ago but not now.
CodeMonkey - ashwin100, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I think Halo 3 is far enough down the line in development now that this won't significantly affect it too much.
- Shaggy6ster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13He's not working FOR Bungie anymore, but he's still working WITH them.
- dolemite5005, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14By the way it sounds, most of the (and his) work for Halo 3 MP is wrapped up. Which leads me to ask, how exactly is this going to affect Halo 3's multiplayer functionality? I really don't see this changing anything as far as Halo 3 is concerned.
Halo 4, maybe. - 1337gmr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Halo 1 with no multiplayer??? What about the gamespy tunnel??? That was the *****..
- Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Because he doesn't want the release of Halo 3 to further hurt his precious PS3's reputation/gamer base/however-else-you-want-to-look-at-it.
- dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I think its necessary to read all sides of the story :)

Look, Max Oberman is a Bungie veteran and has been with them wahay before the Halo franchise was even created. However, his leaving will ultimately cause a minimal disruptance in the Halo 3 multiplayer? Why? Because he's still working on it.
See, he left Bungie citing location. He wanted to work in Austin, but Microsoft shut down their Digital Anvil studio there. - kellsworth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11If you don't think there's strategy behind the multiplayer in H2, then you probably sucked at it. There's definitely strategy involved, especially with the team play....
- Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"It's demand isn't high enough."
I think the demand for CTF is much higher than territories or bomb/assault mode. - Rsulliv1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is always the outside possibility that they may replace him.
I doubt that they'll just leave his desk empty until the project's over.
Developer: "Hey, I need approval on this multiplayer functionality. Where should I go?"
PM: "Just put it on top the pile on Max's desk."
Yep, they'll probably find someone else to fill in.
:) - BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"just an all out fragfest"
I think UT + Quake fall under this category much better than Halo but I guess any game with a "Deathmatch" mode could fall under this category. In reality, isn't getting the most kills the underlying concept behind ALL FPS's? - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It sounds like he's been planning to leave for a while. I'm sure he laid the foundation for the game well enough for people to fill in the gaps. It's Halo 3, people...I'm sure they paid him well enough to stick it out to lay some fundamental MP groundwork for the game which and is probably why we're seeing some MP screenshots so early and possibly why they're doing a public Beta test.
- Codename, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I play a lot of Halo 2, I've been to 2 MLG events, and to be honest, it's ALL about teamwork, aiming doesnt really matter, when there is 4 other people shooting at you at once.
- inajeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3RTFA: The design has been done, the development is on going.
- capitapf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@grammarpolice
"I still haven't played Halo or anything on xbox live, but if this game starts to get some serious momentum, then I might have to get this in a couple of months."
where have you been the last 2 years? you would have to be retarded to think that Halo doesnt have serious momentum.
@kellsworth
I couldnt agree with you more. H2 requires more strategy than CS or any fps imho.
@berwiki
if H2 is such a big disappointment, what do you think makes a good game? please enlighten us.
before playing Halo i was an avid pc gamer for many years. Since playing H2 on XBL I havent even had the urge to game on my pc. Halo 2 is, in all honesty, the best game that i have ever played. - jCsickZ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5rest assured, halo 3 multiplayer will be top notch.
- jamauss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, it is 'Oberman' or 'Hoberman' ? I especially liked this part of the article:
"In an official statement, Oberman said “What we've accomplished with Halo 3 is extraordinary," Hoberman said."
words escape me.
Oberman Pinchers, ftw. - justice7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this goes for Gears of War as well.
- Shaggy6ster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Also for anyone that plays on live why isn't there a CTF large party option? I don't like territories and i don't like the bomb thing why can't there be an option for ranked 8 v 8 CTF only matches."
It's demand isn't high enough. Bungie has incorporated many different play lists over the last two years, and the ones that get a lot of traffic stay, and the less popular ones get weeded out.
Recently, several of the play lists were temporarily removed for the holidays, citing low traffic during the season as the cause. Bungie feels that having fewer chanels of play will make for better matchmaking experiences, as you wont have to wait an aggravatingly long time to find other people to play with.
And for what it's worth, you can always set up a custom game and play with some friends. - UCFartstudntJON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This can only mean two things. 1. He doesn't think Halo 3 will meat expectations. or 2. He believes this will be the final installment of Halo and perhaps wants to make some ripples for future jobs.
- dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4(comment got truncated above - so continuing)
Thus, he left Bungie and decided to set up shop in Austin; founding a new game company "Certain Affinity" with local talent in the area.
Him leaving Bungie hardly means its "going to suck". Certain Affinity is actually continuing work on the Halo 3 Multiplayer maps. Also, Max left behind a team and vision with him when he left Bungie. Like in any good team development situation - one person's doesnt account for the entire team :)
Anyways, while a loss - I don't forsee Halo 3 all of a sudden imploding because of his absence. It would appear that he still has a very large stake / role in its multiplayer development and is on good terms with Bungie.
If anything, misleading description... I doubt the functionality of Halo 3's multiplayer will change / suffer ... as outlined above - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If my memory serves me correctly, I believe that Shishka quit working at Bungie to work at this place in Texas. I wonder what they're cooking up down there....
- vagarach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I doubt he would have left had he felt that not being there would lessen the worth of the final product.
- TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not true. Lost Planet released a muliplayer beta and due to huge amounts of fan feedback they are completely redesigning the party system for the final version of the game. (Exactly what Gears of War should have done). If Bungie is going to set up a multiplayer Beta it is to get a feel for fan reaction to the multiplayer experience as a whole and will probably result in some fundamental changes, not just free bug/glitch reporting.
- Dahak2150, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it Oberman or Hoberman!?
I r confuzzled. - Ragashingo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Bungie has pretty much already said that Halo 3 is the last of the series.
- cajungator2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sorry, i much rather play H2's multiplayer than half life or counterstrike
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are still a lot of older people there, but most of the original crowd from the Myth and Marathon days are gone.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Great, maybe it won't suck.
- ulcards2033, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@codemonkey
Clan system? When was the last time you played halo2, because Bungie took away clan battle support a long time ago. - justice7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if he did any work on Myth: The Fallen Lords ?
Myth, imo, was so far ahead of its time when it was released that it -- today -- would be considered a solid game. - Rsulliv1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Why would you say that?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Halo's lead multiplayer designer was Michael Evans (check the Halo credits). He left a while ago, he's at Giant Bite.
http://www.giantbite.com/news.htm
This was the new lead multiplayer designer I guess.
Honestly, there's almost no one left at Bungie who was responsible for this stuff besides Jason Jones. Alex Seropian left a while back and took some people to Wideload to make "Stubbs the Zombie". - jonstafari, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3good job 2old2play ;-)
- cogsprocket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Who's Hoberman?
- crcurran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The game is practically done at this point. I'm sure all the maps and mechanisms in the game that he worked on just being tweaked at this point.
- PostalBean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The Halo 3 MP is pretty much done, the beta is being released in March. All that's left is finding bugs anbd fixing them, no designing left. So this will not affect Halo 3.
- nbcivic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm sure with new, creative people coming in the spot just gets better, if it doesn't, they'll fire the new guy and get another, easy as that.
- neATL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OR.....just maybe..... it means he was given a better offer and felt that Halo's future was in good hands. OR.......just maybe he wanted to pursue something different after being in one place for TEN YEARS.
I'm just assuming here though. - Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's exactly what I was thinking. The game is in Beta mode right now, so probably all that needs to be done is Debuggin. Besides, it's not like he's dropping off the face of the earth; he's just going to start his own company... his own company that he said will still partner with Bungie.
- zerochaos911, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Who Cares,If you read the article it says that he worked on the foundation of Halo 3 MP for a year and a half. And The company he is creating is still with microsoft so This is good news for 360 owners.
- SheepLicker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0[EDIT: Scratch that whole comment.]
- Aseir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Does anyone know if Olberman worked on Halo: Combat Evolved (Halo 1)? I am a die hard halo fan, with months of actual time poured into the games, but Halo 1 is where my heart truly is when dealing with the multiplayer aspect of the series. I'm hoping that they preserve all the beautiful things that were present within Halo 1 and extract the great things from Halo 2 as well to make a brilliant game.
- NYC10004, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sounds like there was a breakthrough made in Halo 3 mulitplayer that he lead, and now he's taking his act (and the potential for major profits) on the road.
- infowar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2NOooooooooooo!
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@ berwiki
Compared to what? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3"Halo 2 turned the online world on its head,"
-Maybe on the Console but I do believe Half Life aka Counterstrike was much bigger. - BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1(bah, wrong box)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Bungie Spin Control 1.0 [tm]
