- scrappy2129, on 06/30/2009, -2/+93I can just imagine all the 12 year-olds squatting up and down in their living rooms as you're being tea bagged in matchplay.
- navidb, on 06/30/2009, -1/+69Too much exercise, tea bagging will drop dramatically.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -4/+57Sweet, I can't wait for the Reach around.
- Braindead360, on 06/29/2009, -7/+38While I think that Natal is the inevitable future of console based game control, it will never completely eliminate the need for actual controllers. The only way that someone would have a completely immersion based controlling experience is if they were to use some form of virtual reality, and IMO we are quite a ways away from that type of experience being within our living rooms. I think that Natal will end up being allot like the Wii. We'll get the occasional innovative game come down the development pipe, but 99% of everything else we'll see will be complete garbage.
- Zarokima, on 06/30/2009, -0/+17Suddenly I'm more supportive of Natal.
- threon, on 06/30/2009, -2/+19My pants are Natal enabled.
- skipunk, on 06/30/2009, -1/+14Johnny Lee is actually on the team working on Natal....
- anexanhume, on 06/30/2009, -2/+13FTA:
"I absolutely think Reach could be enabled with it."
This pertains to possibility, not any indication of actual occurrence. The headline is misleading, as it suggests they are mulling the point. - stubear, on 06/30/2009, -1/+10While it is not confirmed to be true, Bungie most certainly did hint at Halo:Reach being Natal enabled. FTA:
Speaking with the Seattle Times, Bungie president Harold Ryan expressed excitement for the new peripheral, saying, "I absolutely think Reach could be enabled with it."
I don't know if it can get any clearer then that. - strictnein, on 06/30/2009, -2/+10That's the first thing I thought of as well.
http://johnnylee.net/projects/wii/ - mywhitenoise, on 06/30/2009, -9/+17You think a motion sensor would be more precise over an analog stick, or keyboard and mouse? Yeah right, dude.
- fadetoone, on 06/30/2009, -1/+8Now the 12 year olds will be able to sit on your face, hump your leg, flip you off and make other annoying gestures IN GAME!
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+8It might require a sense of aim.
- sTiKyt, on 06/30/2009, -2/+9I don't think that that's necessarily a bad thing. Even if only one percent of games that use a new control style are playable then that's still better than all games choosing not to innovate for fear of failure. People have taken chances with new control styles in the past and even though most fail a few survive and the rest of the industry quickly follows their lead. Take FPS for example quite a niche market for a while but quickly exploded in a way few people could have expected even a few years before.
People need to be lenient with developers who are honestly trying and are on track. There's a hypocrisy in the gaming community where everyone is quick to condemn developers for not creating innovative with their games but go absolutely berserk anyone fails in their experimentation to create something great. - voomfoo, on 06/29/2009, -10/+17I disagree that it is the "inevitable future of console based game control." It's just some add on to appeal to casual gamers. First person shooters will always use the controller or keyboard and mouse. At most they will include stupid little motion control sections of the game like in COD3. They were stupid and added nothing to the game. I know how to turn a wheel in real life. If I'm playing a game i want to press a button and have it happen.
I think that there could be some sort of sub-genre of first person shooters that involve moving behind cover by moving around in your living room but they will be a short lived gimick. - Mavital, on 06/30/2009, -2/+8I think people are failing to see the COMBINED uses. For instance, in a shooter you would still use the controller to move/aim, but lean left or right using the motion control. That would make peeking around corners very intuitive.
Also, just because the camera is made to detect motion doesn't mean it can't be used for other things. Having a sensor at the TV enables developers to create third party devices that interact with the sensor BEYOND motion, aka Wii style pointing devices.
I think too many people here are jumping the gun. Let Microsoft show some actual games (non tech demo) and then we can judge. - Larssonk22, on 06/30/2009, -1/+6I love Halo 3 (multiplayer) but I haven't been very excited at the two Halo games in development. But the thought of using the Natal to play Reach sounds pretty darn awesome to me!
- phbohn2, on 06/30/2009, -2/+7i can't wait to shoot my tv
- B1665r, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5Yeah... once again. The way Natal works, this could just be more inputs. Unlike the wii, and the ps3 color globes it doesnt have to be an all or nothing thing.
- mntnbkr7, on 06/29/2009, -7/+11weak
- Kuci06, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5HOW CAN I REACH THESE KEEDS
- ProfessorSYM, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5[Insert skeptical know-it-all comment here]
- Jordan117, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Not quite -- in the Halo backstory, "Reach" is the name of humanity's most populous and powerful colony world, second only to Earth. It's the industrial powerhouse and primary headquarters of the human military, and where the Spartans were trained. And, shortly before the first Halo takes place, it was attacked and destroyed by the Covenant. Only the Master Chief survived, on a ship that jumped randomly to Halo, but this game will focus on how the fortress world of Reach fell in the hours prior to that.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -6/+10Jonny Lee+ Natal = Headtracking --> 3D gaming on normal tellies.
- crussell96, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Seriously?
- lsloany, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3I'm fairly sure you can get the cheapest x-box for cheaper than the regular wii console.
- Zantive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3I'd hardly call the studio president "a guy who doesn't know anything about it"
- theaceoffire, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3^_^ But they will only be able to play for 3-4 hours max... Unless they are mutants, very few people can do full body motion controls for 12-15 hours like you can play with a controller.
- Harabeck, on 06/30/2009, -3/+6No, motion control is a step away from even a controller.
- slunktoday, on 06/30/2009, -3/+6I'm not even sure that it's really going to appeal to casual gamers. It seems like it'll be stuck in between the audience of casuals and serious gamers.
Most casual gamers I know would be confused by the complete lack of a controller.
And it seems like more complicated and in-depth games would require some semblence of buttons. Take a first person shooter. How would you fire? Do you make explosion sounds? Do you move your arms back and forth? Do you curl a finger?
The technology is very impressive, but I've yet to see how the usability will be addressed and handled. - MasterGrief, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/6/5/
- Diggnabbit, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3I don't see Natal being a central part of Halo Reach. It's possible that it could be used for headtracking, which would be huge, but my guess is it would be more for menu manipulation or maybe having some non-environment-interacting functions (reloading, switching weapons, etc.) mapped to particular motions.
- stubear, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3I never said it was confirmed, not the first sentence of my comment. Second, I was responding to the original post where it was claimed that this was "...nothing in this article but a guy who doesn't know anything about it...". I'd bet the president of Bungie is a little more than "a guy who doesn't know anything about it" and his saying that Halo:Reach could be enabled with Natal most likely says they are looking into this or have looked into this already. Whether or not the game is actually enabled with the technology is left wide open and unconfirmed, again which is why I started my original comment with "While it is not confirmed to be true,...".
- sTiKyt, on 06/30/2009, -4/+7I prefer games where I pester 10 years about not finishing their homework.
- jbird123, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2My brother is looking at me like if crazy laughing out loud at both comments :P
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+3I think Natal runs the risk of being a complete failure.
HALF of Wii's success is the novelty of the gyroscopes. The OTHER half, just as important, is that it is an inexpensive console.
This Natal thing - who knows how much it will cost on top of the already expensive Xbox (add $100 to sticker for the proprietary wireless network device).
Natal appears to have more in common with Robbie the Robot than Wii. - yournamehere, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2he said 'could' which doesn't mean he's hinting that it is.. just that it could be.
I don't know where you are getting that as he's hinting that it is in there. At least from that sentence you cant confirm that it is or is not. - Harabeck, on 06/30/2009, -7/+9Point at it how? I'm not even sure how this would work. You make a gun with your fingers?
- noahgelman, on 06/30/2009, -3/+5What do you guys think are the chances that it'll work as well as it was advertised at E3?
- WarWizard89, on 06/30/2009, -2/+4Next up! Halo Tennis!
Please stop the whoring of good franchises to promote other products. - DCstewieG, on 06/30/2009, -1/+3No, it will recognize you saying PEW! PEW! while you hold your hands interlocked with index fingers aiming at the screen. Reload by yelling I'M OUT! Get ready for the next generation!!
- gametavern, on 06/30/2009, -1/+3I hope they keep it limited. Like interacting with an "ai" similar to Milo, on a side game type thing.
- MilitantRabbit, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Weird, I had a dream like that last night.
Bungie, it's up to YOU to make it a reality. - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+3It could be an interesting way to implement hand signals in a squad-based first-person shooter instead of being limited to a few on the d-pad or navigating a menu.
http://www.airsoftgent.be/dbase/hands.htm - cyoder, on 06/30/2009, -3/+5It's probably best not to imagine 12-year-olds doing that at all.
I prefer to imagine hot college co-eds doing it instead. Supposedly, they're crawling all over Live. - Elranzer, on 06/30/2009, -4/+5No. Nothing is as fail as PS Home.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Johnny lee is the source. also try google.
- FreddieD, on 06/30/2009, -1/+2They both have their advantages, and I am not a fan of Wii games because I feel like I need to get in shape, but it does add a fun new aspect to game playing.
That said, yes many times I just want to lounge in my gaming chair or on the couch, put my forearms on my knees and play on a traditional controller for hours on end. - sndream, on 06/30/2009, -1/+2I can already saw the headline how someone trying to dodge enemy fire and end up jumping out of his window.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/30/2009, -1/+2Looks kind of dumb. We already have leaning in many games, and turning your head while keeping your eyes forward... to turn your head seems awkward.
