- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -7/+268This should be included in every Xbox360 game released from now on. And the default setting for Live users under 16 should be MUTE.
Im sick of hearing eunuchs voices run the gamut of the Urban Dictionary every time I want to play some Gears. -Feedback just isnt cutting it. - PatrickFisher, on 10/12/2007, -15/+179The defalt setting for people under 16 should be mute everywhere, not just in games!
- joaob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+101Now all I want is the ability to let them know I just muted them.
That seems to hurt the loud mouths more then hurling insults back. - Doronba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+85cant recall how many times i got bummed by annoying kids splitting my ear apart for their yelping and *****. please introduce it to the xbox console itself. not just the games.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+74Microsoft, pay attention. If your flagship game is designing its UI to work around your built in interface it's time to change things.
- Bara, on 10/12/2007, -5/+64Don't be a ***** idiot. It's not about the ability to mute people, it's about how easy it is to mute people. So you don't have to go through the Guide button, choose recent players, find the player who's talking like an idiot, choose his name, then select Mute... now it's just, press Back, choose with right analog stick, press X to mute.
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -7/+65@ontheJdar:
Dude, just shut up. Nobody cares. Either gb2 Gaia or wherever you came from, or just GTFO teh intarnets entirely. Its not my fault your voice sounds like an angsty schoolgirl who just found out that first-time sex hurts a little.
Nobody wants to hear your trap, or read your type. - bryxal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+50@Whackly
Where may i find this "girl with a tight ponytail, frumpy sweater, and a lisp" you speak of? - julesverne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+49It's about time.
People telling me to suck their ***** whilst simultaneously calling me a fag ruins the experience.
Articulate, intelligent, hilarious trash talk, I'd love to hear. - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+47Yeah, a little message that pops up to the player saying "You've just been muted by: mAstERcheF07, pwnstar117, h4xT0t3hm4x, and billiam clinton"
- diggfinity, on 10/12/2007, -4/+50"I'M GONNA ***** YOUR MOM IN THE A..." *mute*
Thank you, Bungie. - blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Gears is bad for the cursing, but the Tony Hawk series seems to be a haven for 6 year olds. I swear I've encountered a total of four people over 13 in that game. I should really play something else but unfortunately I seem to have developed an addiction to it, as a result of which I'm also addicted to muting lots and lots of people.
Oh, and to anyone saying you can do that already-- the point isn't that you can mute, it's that it is more convenient. RTFA please. - timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39Actually, that's the problem with the current UI (at least in GoW). In the 10 seconds I have between matches, it takes longer for me to get to a player and mute them. So, I lose out on a short bit of time in getting to the center of the map and into the gameplay.
This new system seems to solve the problem quite nicely. A quick link to muting players that shouldn't interfere with gameplay. - gamerage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37If you read the article you won't sound so clueless.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35Fanboy much?
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31If it shows your gamertag, the little prick will probably just spam you with negative feedback himself. It would probably be better to have a message say "You are being ignored by *X* number of players. Try not to be so annoying next time."
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Ya nothing ruins Halo 2 on a recovery night from drinking like a 12 year old screaming for no apparent reason. I just gave up on using any of the headsets or talking online and instead opt for my friends to come over if they want to talk to me as we play. That way I can just mute everyone in game.
- EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29The whole ***** point is that they are making something that ALREADY EXISTS easier!
Damn it how hard is it to RTFA! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28If you don't like people shooting at you, then you won't like ANY FPS.
- oofgeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26It helps against people who...
1. Aren't even old enough to supposed to be playing the game.
2. Think that everyone wants to hear the crappy music that they are listening to.
3. Were touched by their uncle and must trash talk to make up for it.
4. Just naturally have a very annoying voice. (ie Gilbert Gottfried) - pezkoreaddict, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24the "X" button is going to get worn out pretty quick...
- LittleDanzig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23** BEFORE YOU POST, PLEASE REFER TO THIS REFERENCE GUIDE **
It has been brought to our attention that discussion in this thread has become dominated by several repeating statements. To create a more compelling and transparent user experience, we have provided this list for your use -- Simply find the statement that best matches your indiscriminate rage, copy the text, and paste it into your comment box. Finally, a solution to the troublesome task of formulating ones' own opinion!
OPTION ONE: THE CURMUDGEON
"Young children are annoying to me when they speak in live voice chat. Their frequent use of profanity and their hyperactive nature is offensive to both my sensibilities and my eardrums."
OPTION TWO: THE REBEL
"Wewtz, I love talkin trash on XBox Live and all of you just take ***** too seriously so ***** you and i'ma teabag your face."
OPTION THREE: GUY WHO WEARS SOCKS WITH SANDALS
"PC Gamers have been able to do this forever, congratulations on a new feature that is actually really old."
OPTION FOUR: CONSOLE VIGILANTE
"Even though this it's only marginally related to the topic at hand, I'd still like to mention the fact that OMG XBOX TOTALLY SUCKS and MICROSOFT WANTS TO EAT YOUR CHILDREN"
OPTION FIVE: COMMENTS NAZI
"I'm going to inject myself into your discussion with a long post full of snark critiquing your conversational ability and then disappear into the sunset." - allisonaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21i'd take it a step further and allow an additional option to provide reason for muting. reasons can include, but are not limited to:
annoying squeaky puberty voice
rude language
obsession with homosexual slurs
obsession with racial slurs
won't shut up
bad sport.
in addition, i'd think it would be cool if, somewhere on the player's information, it shows how many people have muted/blocked them in the past, oh, 6 months. excessive bad behavior? you get a scarlet letter on your gamer profile, marking your most frequent offense (must be a certain ratio of how often you play, like, if over 70% of players you've encountered say your a d-bag, just to make sure someone's not getting singled out), and the 'host' (or whoever created the session) is given the option of not allowing you into the game. maybe that would finally get people to act more apropriately. - kevmaguire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Why is it only Bungie that are coming up with great ideas like this? They nailed the matchmaking system for Halo 2, just completely took it back to the drawing board and made it perfect. I can't see why anyone else does it differently now, it's such a perfect system, but games come out every week where it's still broken (Gears of War, I'm looking at you!).
And now this, the first of (I reckon many) design decisions not based on polygon counts, or bump mapping, reflections, 7.1 sound or anything like that - but simply taking something in gaming that is accepted as being "broken" (in this case smack talking idiots) and fixing it. It's almost like Bungie are pushing things forward, and caring where no-one else does. Do you think this may be anything to do with their close relationship with MS? Like maybe J Allard or Major Nelson sit down with Frankie and says "Hey, our billions spent on market research tell us that people hated getting called a "mother *****" and crouched on after getting killed when playing halo 2"? Or is it down to the fact that Bungie probably have a team 3 times the size of other smaller publishers, and can afford to have a guy with the position of " Manager for Quality Assurance in Online Communication Exchanges"? - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooy jj..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Yes, we get it. Consoles are evil, PCs are great, you're not a counterstrike nerd, blah blah blah Get over it. No one's claiming bungie invented it. It's a nice addition to a fun and popular game. You can take your feelings of inadequacy elsewhere.
- Whackly, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26People who take the game too seriously are just as annoying as the 11 year old who just realized he can say dirty words over the Xbox Live with little to no consequences. However, the people who take it too seriously are easy to avoid by just changing the type of gamer you are to family or basically anything other than the "hardcore leet socially inept virgin whose only chance to score will almost certainly involve a girl with a tight ponytail, frumpy sweater, and a lisp" setting.
- piper999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18@onTheJDAR
He doesn't like ADD kids squealing in his ear or having to listen to teenagers shouting abuse.
I hardly think this qualifies him as a bigot. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18angry halo guy...

http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?cid=9533 - Duelist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Reading skills seem to be at an all-time low these days. The article says that it was possible before, but now it's a lot easier to mute people using the Back button.
Beats going through the Guide to recent players. - DocFunBags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14@inbred

http://live.xbox.com/en-CA/profile/profile.aspx?pp=0&GamerTag=masterchef07 - SuckMyDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15The comments on Digg are more and more ridiculous as the days go by. Out of all these comments there are about 4 major themes: "I like trash talking", "Kids are so annoying, thanks for making it easier to mute them", and "What's the big deal, you could already mute people?" "Pc games have been able to for years!".
Now, if anyone has anything useful to say, please do so. - mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14So you will buy it if it doesnt come with this feature?
No one talks to you in real life right? - wyattearp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14good grammar is entertaining as well.
- foomojive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13FINALLY! I can't tell you how many times I've joined a matchmaking game only to be greeted by "what's up, *****" from some idiot. can't wait till I can insta-mute him!
- drakino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13With the normal way to mute someone being such a pain in the ass, it really makes you wonder if any of the 360 designers actually played on XBox Live on the old XBox. I think it should be mandatory for all the XBox employees to play at least 1 hour a week during primetime in some random game with the public until they come up with a better way for all games.
- semengilligan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm going to miss the 20 minute post game lobby's where people just talk crap about nothing and were all dumber for hearing it.
Where else will i go to find out my mother is a whore and apparently banging everyone on xbox live? - growler1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Any chance for cross-functionality with real life?
- MrFoodMonster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Even though I'm not a Halo fan at all, this is a pretty weak reason to not want to play the game. If you don't like the game, that's fair, but saying that because they are allowing people to be muted because asshats play their game (not really their fault) you won't play it because of an added feature is pretty ***** ridiculous.
- rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Well, speaking as a 15 year old I think that the default shouldn't be to mute all under 16s, but to have an incredibly easy mute button. The under 16s with something valuable to say can, while the "I'm going to rape you you bitch ass whore ***** intercept my ball omg you *****" people can be muted.
(seriously, the "what the ***** I'll rape you don't intercept my passes you cocksucking *****" type is all on madden 07 and the mute button has never been more valuable to me) - drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14It would be better rather then just saying, "You have been muted by xx" to say something like, "SILENCED! xx has shown his intent that you talk to much!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Pretty sure the X button mutes after selecting a player using the back button and the right analog stick. Might wanna practice what you preach.
- Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12It sound like someone doesn't own the game and now is using this as a good "excuse" to make himself/herself sound cool.
They're not admiting that the game is completely full of cry baby teenagers. They're saying that there exists some that you may just not want to hear. Or they are responding to customer complaints. - gamerage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Oh man you are hilarious. Trash talking is a phenomenon of all games with voice, not one specific title. Specifically it is a function of the powerlessness and insecurity of youth.
What makes halo 2 a notable case is that is has such a huge player base that it brings out larger numbers of every group, including the dicks. - xnacoder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9*insert broken record*
Consoles have also had this for years. This will just make it a bit faster to do. RTFA.
Consoles have also had this for years. This will just make it a bit faster to do. RTFA.
Consoles have also had this for years. This will just make it a bit faster to do. RTFA... - wyattearp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8maybe it would be better served in that you are more likely matched with other players who have been excessively muted. let the jerks play with the jerks and the people who just want to play stay away from the cruft.
- Andrewc989, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@KyleRayner
Couldn't agree with you more. More games need to support quick mute features, for those thousands of players under 18 who feel the need to spew expletives constantly. - DanielConley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7 @ aahpandasrun
You must be one of the few FPS players who greatly appreciate that perfect game that was Pefect Dark for the N-64... I agree with the critcism of Bungie, however they do not lack innovation for they did make an outstanding game, but I think what is needed is from them is more implementation of existing ideas at least as options, like bots, and peformance tracking/ levels like Perfect Dark. - atlex2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I agree but when a 15 year old is just on to have fun and isn't screaming his ass off this is pointless.
I wish all games had one button mute instead of having to dig through menus... -
