- Nobi-Wan, on 10/11/2007, -5/+68One guy from my friends list has posted his impressions on Bungie.net because he got the early "Friends and Family Invite." Here they are for those of you that care:
"One word: Spectacular
Faster paced, tighter, louder, frantic, more beautiful, just about everything so far has been improved upon in Halo 3. From the matchmaking system, to the gametypes, to the customization of your Spartan, it's all........................better.
Lay all your "omg I hope this isn't just Halo 2.5" worries to rest. It's Halo alright, but with the new weapons, deployable gadgets, gametypes, maps, ranks, graphics and most importantly gameplay, Halo 3 just flows beautifully. IMO the gameplay is more like Halo CE than Halo 2, with a big emphasis on single wielding and using the three types of grenades.
WEAPONS: Back are your frag and sticky grenades, along with the spiker which seems less powerful.........unless you stick it on some dude's back, then it's funnier than s'hit. Didn't see a sword or magnum. Rocket launcher also seemed less powerful, at least the splash damage was. Laser is bad ass, pull the trigger and it charges.......all the while you can move the reticle around until it's charged and fires. I love the Assault Rifle, it's a worthy close range weapon that you'll want to keep on hand on the smaller maps. Spiker was fun to use, but I didn't kill anyone with it unless i was duel wielding spikers. Needler looked and sounded cool, but I wasn't impressed.
My most "OMG AWE!" moment was picking up the human snipe and seeing the HUD screen on the gun. The HUD on the sniper shows the topography of the map as well as people moving around in your line of vision......which makes me hope there's a night map where this would be most useful.
Gametypes: As shat said, VIP is bad ass. Each team get's a VIP that you have to protect. The VIP has an overshield so he's harder to kill, but if you do kill the other team's VIP you get a point. Assault went from one of my least favorite gametypes to one of my most favorite. You still take turns arming the bomb, but the defensive team can disarm by standing over it once it's in the bomb circle. Territories is excruciatingly exciting, takes way longer to capture a terrritory and it's offense/defense. So no more who get's the best spawn, now it's red team tries to keep the blue team from capturing the 5 territories before the time limits up.
Maps All gorgeous with High Ground being my favorite so far. An amazingly intricate map with a s'hitload of nooks, crannies, passageways and ways to infiltrate the base. Valhalla is Coag on crack, no more snipers paradise as there is a s'hitload of BR's, 2 weasels, hog and the topography is just drastic enough to where you can make it across the map on foot. But why would you when riding brokeback on a weasel is just about as fun as it gets. Snowbound is breathtaking, and a meat grinder on slayer, tight, but fair. My favorite part was watching a new guy run out into the perimeter and get ass r4ped by the sentry lasers.
Lastly my favorite part of Halo 3 believe it or not is the audio. Unfreakin' beliveable the sounds you'll hear. The richochet of bullets through the Valhalla canyon echoeing, it's worth it just to die in the river so you can hear the muted gunfire underwater, the grenade explosions are awe inspiring, weapons, etc. Just a stellar job on the audio effect. You have to hear this s'hit to believe it.
Don't you worry crotums, Halo 3 will deliver what we all hoped it would, and this is just the beta, with limited gametypes and 3 maps. Imagining 15 maps, more gametypes and all our friends online?"
And just for all you doubters thinking he's just some 15 year old fanboy, put those doubts to rest. He's married and has two kids and runs his own business. - asif5th, on 10/11/2007, -11/+55If it's anything like Halo 1 multi-player, then yes
Halo 2- Noob-Fiesta - darthbutcher, on 10/11/2007, -18/+52I honestly don't think it can, as people will have godly expectations after Halo 2.
- Mkvenner, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31I doubt it's possible for ANYTHING to live up to the kind of hype Halo gets... but all the same, should be fun.
Nice little article there. - Pix869, on 10/11/2007, -6/+27You don't pay 50$ a year to play halo online...it's for ALL of xbox live.

1) Why does Halo 3 only support 16 players per match when PC and PS3 games are easily supporting 32,40, and larger games
2) Why does Halo 3 not have dedicated server support? 3) Why should gamers have to pay 50 dollars a year justto be allowed the privilege to play the game online?
4) Why does Halo 3 look almost exactly like Halo 2?
5) Why did you steal the backlash grenade from Resistance?
6) Why is Bungie still making games with that stupid green metal effect that got old years ago?
7) How did having a gig less disc space 7gigs 360 vs 8gigs Xbox affect the game?

What the hell else are you going to buy on the 360?
The crappy DVD drive, lack of standard harddrive, and weak graphics have ruined GTA IV.
Mass Effect is now being called Mass Downgrade, yet another UE3 marketing bullshot fiasco for the 360
Forza damage control photomode shots look like a joke compared to GT real in game 1080 60fps graphics
No dedicated servers
P2P networking with the usual laggy online play
Only 16 players total per game
Graphics look like a complete joke
50 dollars a year just to be allowed to play the game online
Bungie already stole the backlash grenade, you might as well either save your money and keep playing tired old Halo 2 or actually play a real next gen game, Resistance. 40 players per game, dedicated servers for lag free online gaming, insane graphics that never drop frames no matter how many players on screen, the best weapons of any online game, scalable maps, the best party system there. And it doesn't cost a single cent to play.
Halo 3 has turned out to be so much of a joke you have to wonder if have the hundreds of millions to spend buying reviews and media hype that Bungie just doesn't see any reason to even try.

480 dollars for the system
50 dollars every year to be able to play games online
Same defective hardware as the other two 360 SKUs - better add an extended warranty 50 bucks or so
You can't upgrade the harddrive with off the shelf drives
No BluRay or HD-DVD storage or movie playback
You are paying 550-600 bucks for a 360 with more drive space and HDMI but just as prone to the red rings of death. HDMI should have been included in all 360 versions. And there is no reason other than greed that Microsoft doesn't allow the other 360 SKUs to upgrade their harddrives.
After five years you are going to end up spending 800 bucks on an Elite after paying for online play every year and you won't have HDMI 1.3 and you can't upgrade your drive past the current size.
No wonder Microsoft is having to allocate so few per store so they can try to claim a sellout...
by DanaLL on 4/19/07
Xbox 360 DVD drives have only 7.5 gigs of usable space for developers.
t is amazing that the Xbox 360 is the first console in history to actually have LESS storage space than a previous gen.
Hilarious that you are a Xbox fanboy and don't even know that

Halo 2 level graphics
And that stupid shiny metal effect all over the place

To be quite honest (with my own opinion of course), Halo 2 disappointed me campaign-wise and multiplayer-wise when compared to Halo CE. Sure, it had a lot more to it, but there was just something missing. I hated how the best weapons never respawned and one team could control everything in the first minute. The sword also killed a lot of the fun factor, too. Just give it to your noobiest player and all the sudden he's at the top of the leaderboards. One thing that Bungie forgot what made Halo so great was the STARTING weapon. If you can defend yourself from the get-go then it's fun. If you have to race to get a halfway decent then your fun is severely cut short over and over again and it becomes more frustration than anything.
It sounds like Bungie learned a LOT about what did and didn't work in Halo 2. I hope to God they take out the sword, or at least give the thing a limited charge. - Anrkist, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19I think it was a question for fans. Given the things you stated and the popularity of 2, you fail.
- DeadManWalking, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19After Spiderman i've regained my wariness of all things "3"
Obviously there are some notable exceptions (GTA), but i'm not going to buy into any of the hype surrounding Halo and hopefully I can enjoy a "fairly good" product instead of being disappointed by something that's not "mindblowingly amazing." - 4Prophecy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14The 'Friends and Family' beta has apparently been getting really good reviews from the players, so far. I'm excited for the 16th. :)
- dalectrics, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Maybe because Halo was the first decent FPS that reached mass audiences.
It's like saying:
I don't understand why people think PGR is so good. Its like console boys never had a driving arcade game. - Radan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10The thing is, even if it turns out to be the best game ever released, people will still be unsatisfied, as people were when was Halo 2 released (which for your information is still one of the most played games on Xbox live). There's always something people will whine about. May it be the "Good but not groundbreaking graphics", the Halo 1 pistol which doesn't outpower the sniper, or the 16 players limit.
Concerning myself, I will personally just enjoy the game for what it is, though I have to say, I AM pretty hyped over the coming beta right now :) - gutistg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11@modifiedbears
End of story? I was under the impression that Halo 3 would be released in the near future. - ODSTKuk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9@ p373y
Every weapon is balanced. The Spartan laser has a 5 second delay, sure its good on vechicals buts its not a good strategy to just run in guns a blazin.

This helps with getting a perspective of whats to come with the halo 3 beta - cozamonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Yes, the Spartan Laser is awesome. Played the Beta at my friend's house yesterday and that was definitely one of my favorite guns. Spartan Laser is the new Rocket Launcher.
- Bodhesatva, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14You know what my big problem with Halo is? It's not the quality of the games: I've played both, and I absolutely agree that everything about the games are top notch: story, music, level design, multiplayer, the whole works. My problem is that I was raised on -- and still play -- first person shooters on the PC, and I absolutely cannot stand playing FPS with a gamepad. It's like running with lead weights on my feet. I played Halo 2 multiplayer a bunch of times with friends, and I could not count how many times I had to sit and think: "if I had a mouse to aim more quickly/accurately, I could have pulled that off."
I know it's a very particular concern, and it isn't really relevant to most people. As I said, it's a product of my FPS upbringing. Conversely, I really feel uncomfortable playing side scrolling games on my PC: it's the one genre that I've always felt was better played with a gamepad. - outhouseinput, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7The thing I liked about H1 was the slower pace. In H2, you walk around without doing anything for ages, but in H1 you had action, just slower. In H2 it's either chaos or nothing. H1 was a nice balance.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Oh thank God! He posted his update on the Plasma Pistol!
"I only picked up the brute a few times, and yeah nothing to write home about. It's probably the least improved weapon graphics wise and you can do a jump beat down. But with all the other bad ass weapons to choose from, I think the Brute will stay laying on the ground along with the needler and Plasma rifle.
Oh, the plasma pistol tracks about half as good as the old one, so I didn't see anyone own with the noob combo like in Halo 2. You've got to be pretty damn close to the person before it'll track." - Juntistik, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8greenreefer, Thank you for doing somthing I've been meaning to do for a while, I have this Sony rep blocked now. tired of the "NO DEDICATED SERVERS?!" "ONLY 16 PLAYER?!" comments.
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I've played CS, UT, Quake and other FPS for years before I touched Halo (I did have a fair bit of GoldenEye under my belt though) and guess what, I can enjoy both, why ? Because I'm not some pathetic moron who has to moan saying "ZOMG FPS SUCK LOLOL U GUYZ R NOOBS."
By the way, I played CS and Q3 on a national level.
Go find a clue and shut up. Even if people haven't played a FPS shooter in any great amount before Halo, what the hell is wrong with that ? Nothing.
All of you morons whining about Halo and console FPS in general probably:
a) Had to no friends to play GoldenEye and Perfect Dark with
b) Suck at console FPS
c) Can't handle competition to your precious platform*
* I've been playing games on the PC since the days of MS-DOS where we had that ugly, white 'file explorer' which I used to open Commander Keen and Nibbles.
People like you are an embarrassment to us REAL PC gamers, grow up. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Way to make a sweeping generalization.
When I was younger I played Wolfenstein, Doom 1 & 2, Dark Forces, and when I got to college I played the ***** out of Half-Life and Counter-Strike. I also loved playing GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. When Halo came out I had a LOT of fun, plus it was cheap and easy for everyone to just grab an Xbox and a TV to play in a room or apartment.
Don't be such an elitist and think you know how much "better" PC FPS games are than console FPS's. The game just appeals to different people with different tastes than you. As a former PC FPS player I can say that I'm quite happy with my decision. - AnubisUK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I am playing it as we speak, as I was lucky to get the friends and family invite and I can say from my experience; I think it does and more.
- P373Y, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8i can fix that problem.
http://www.microsoft.com/games/halo2/
now you can pull it off. - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7> I honestly don't think it can, as people will have godly expectations after Halo 2.
Having played Halo3 for the past ~ 3 days I can say it easily surpasses Halo2 in MP. - Fragarach87, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Man it already does. I think I speak for anyone playing the beta... Its awsome
- masterskill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I was lucky enough to get a F&F invite from a friend of mine, and Halo 3 is just plain fun. Mongoose is zippy and spartan laser is blasty. I'm sure everyone will be pleased in a few days when the wide-scale beta starts.
- kelbear, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3All I expect is for it to be an improvement over Halo 2. No less. I don't think that's unreasonable.
However, I don't expect anything revolutionary either. This is a sequel, an incremental step up from a predecessor. And I liked the predecessor. So I'm fairly sure I'll enjoy the next step up. - CopyNinja, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Really? im not second guessing you i just wanna know where you found that out.
- EbowUK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why does it need to live up to the hype?
The series has zillions of fanboys that believe FPS started with Halo, and will buy each iteration of the game until they find something better to do. - CapnCornflake, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I couldn't have said it any better myself, estvir. Thumbs up.
- Varz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2having to pay to for p2p multiplayer is bs......look at counter strike almost all dedicated servers are free.
I'd say that one of the reasons why servers are limited to 16 people would be because of the limited power of the server (some guys 360). - xXShadowstormXx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It will come to this: most people will like it, some people won't. It's the way it has always worked.
I for one think the Spartan Lazer is totally kick ass. I am psyched for the multi for Halo 3.

- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yeah, eezzzz, it's not like someone pays for all those dedicated servers.
Go find a clue. - BRODEL, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I've only been playing it for a couple of days, but so far I like what I see. Not as good as Halo 1.. but that a personal opinion I won't get into. I'll only say I miss the ability to chuck the grenades farther than 30 feet. :(
I like that I haven't seen a sword guy fly across the map and kill me with one hit. The laser is pretty balanced IMO with the way it charges and the guy you're shooting at hears it and can see it around him. One thing I haven't had a chance to play with is the plasma pistol battle rifle ridiculously cheap ass combo. If that's fixed or better, I'll be happier with just that. It looks also like the needler is more powerful and is faster because I was shooting it off at someone jokingly and it actually killed the guy. I guess that's why you can't dual wield it anymore? Sniping seems harder, which to me is a good thing, it's still not as hard as I think it should be for hiding in a corner of a map whilst picking off people from a safe distance. I'm just not a fan of sniping, I guess I'd rather be in the fray. I love the new mines and power drainer. I haven't figured out a real use for the bubble shield yet, but then again I'm a n00b.
I also like the new maps (the three that I've seen anyway) with high ground being my favorite. That just looks great for 1 flag CTF games. - djh816, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4after seeing the videos, for me it already has. if i could have just had halo 1 or 2 ih better graphics, it would be perfect and thats just what halo 3 seems to be
- Scheissen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Halo > halo 2
- TheFinestShadow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I just am hoping Bungie can deliver on all they have promised. Frankie has been promising all of these new features in Halo 3 since the weekly updates started to focus on H3. I think Bungie can live up to expectations, as long as they do not lose sight of what they are doing.
- Soup4Brains, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The graphics still don't seem to be up to 360 standards quite yet. It could just be the fact that Halo has always had kind of bland environments.
I guess I'll know for sure when I'm playing it in HD later this week. - BabyBrumak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't expect Halo 3 to have revolutionary multiplayer or anything truly mind blowing. However, as long as certain critical balance issues from Halo 2 have been addressed, it should be an extremely solid and fun game. In the end, isn't that what counts anyways?
- TheSorrow87, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The beta is fun, nice change of pace in games once in a while. Spartan Laser FTW!
- tektalk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3YES! yes it can!
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Even playing on my decent sized LCD in my room occasionally I'll feel a bit cramped but after playing a fair few matches I don't really notice it much any more.
- djtodd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't really understand what some people are saying about the graphics...they look good to me, or at least they look the way I expected them too. The game is built around the gameplay and a good online experience. GOW is a great looking game, but to me it has that UE3 "look" which isn't a bad thing, but when you really inspect the visuals (e.g. the back of Marcus' head) you see the "tricks" being employed in the textures. I personally think Halo2 on an SDTV is a great looking game, considering it's built to run on the Xbox's 733MHZ celeron.
- CopyNinja, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I really hope that they restored the view from halo 1, in 2 it feels as if you are in a box looking out with a 80 degree angle of view.
- Dillius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Nice fanboyism there. But I don't own a PS3, prolly never will, and have never played any Metal Gear Solid. I have a 360, Gears of War, Rainbow Six, etc., on the PC I play CS:S, BF 2142, Enemy Territory, etc. I've simply never been able to empathize with Halo outside of the wanting to know how the story ends, so I'm curious if there have been any game play changes to warrant giving it a second try.
- Zola1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wednesday would be the right day to comment on this.
