- haloGboy, on 11/27/2007, -35/+667Things I didn't include in this video are the betrayals (people on my team killing me), players asking me NOT to party up, or all leaving mid-game so that I'm all alone.
Not everything in this video was said with hate. I can take a joke, and I never took offense to what was said in it. My purpose for this video was only to raise awareness. Next time you're interacting with a gay person, even an obvious one that has gay written all over him/her, be sensible. They're not asking for it, that's just who they are, and unlike me, they may in fact be hurt by your comments. - Makaras, on 11/27/2007, -10/+308Please tell me no one is really surprised by this??? Halo is the Alabama of Video Games
- Ocelot13, on 11/27/2007, -7/+301now lets see xxxLezzyGirlxxx to compare and contrast
- mdoerr, on 11/27/2007, -26/+295"Don't worry boys, gayboy will have your back....your backdoor that is!"
*cue mom in the background calling 13-year old to dinner* - Cowfrommars, on 11/27/2007, -186/+438Don't worry guys, Gay Boy will have your back.
Your back door that is. - theragu40, on 11/27/2007, -19/+253God I hate people.
- Bostocks, on 11/27/2007, -10/+214I think videos like this say a lot about our society, just as we are beginning to show tolerance in public it's all wiped away in anonymity.
- badjoke, on 11/27/2007, -27/+211Hah, yeah. i remember when he said that.
- h2g242, on 11/27/2007, -7/+160"hey you got beat by a gay guy" hahaha
i love how a bunch of guys, who just sit around talking and playing with other guys, inside, away from the world and any acquisition of social skills... are knocking on that guy. - DCB360, on 04/11/2008, -49/+187I think he was trying to bring on those comments by making a controversial name.
Is it an unacceptable name or are gamers just intolerant? - Synn, on 11/27/2007, -11/+145Even though I understand what you are saying, and agree with the fact that you shouldn't have to be harassed...I'm afraid the ***** won't stop. That's what makes them *****.
- lydecker, on 11/27/2007, -10/+130Both. The name brought more comments than would have been otherwise, but some comments would have been there regardless. It DOES do a good job of making you see what someone who IS gay has to deal with, because they obviously view these comments in a different light.
- advancedOption, on 11/27/2007, -11/+120I'm blown away by the racism, and homophobia on xbox live... I regularly report people that take it too far. I've even considered making a video of it myself. Good job raising awareness, but, young men are idiots, and group them together, they'll always act like this.
- tidu, on 11/27/2007, -12/+120GayBoy and FriendlyUncle coming at you... One-two punch...
- passedoutghost, on 11/27/2007, -12/+105Thanks for repeating that. I would have totally forgotten something I heard only 2 minutes ago.
- whatthefu, on 11/27/2007, -19/+112People will say anything on Halo 3 without even realizing it
- Zegarek, on 11/27/2007, -6/+98If you played XBL regularly you'd know they're just plain intolerant. It's why I gave up on playing with a mic and matches without at least one of my friends in the party.
- itsripitsrip, on 11/27/2007, -8/+99Friendly Uncle.
A/S/L?? - reevolutn, on 11/27/2007, -4/+9347/m/in the bushes outside your house
- kwazyJAS, on 11/27/2007, -1/+87My friend's gamertag was thursGay. About a week ago Microsoft actually sent him a message telling him he had to change his gamertag before he could play online again.
- leprix, on 11/27/2007, -8/+78same reason you see names like "latino934," "Denmark22" or "baseballguy"
its part of who they are, part of their identity. - brand0con, on 11/27/2007, -12/+79ahhh the classless community of halo gamers. their lack of creativity can only be outdone by their ignorance
- scallon, on 11/27/2007, -8/+69hahahahahah you're a douche
- Bostocks, on 11/27/2007, -10/+69He probably did call himself gayboy just to see the reaction. But think to yourself, would you have thought it was controversial if it said straightboy.. or blackboy..
- moraldebate, on 11/27/2007, -7/+63The best part is that this attitude apparently leads them all to become repressed Republican Senators who are all secretly gay.
- Cam_86, on 11/27/2007, -7/+61Yeah, the correlation of southern accent and hate speech is pretty obvious here... Go figure.
- innocentsinner, on 11/27/2007, -0/+53Would it be him on an empty server trash-talking himself?
- Makaras, on 11/27/2007, -15/+67"Things I didn't include in this video are the betrayals (people on my team killing me), players asking me NOT to party up, or all leaving mid-game so that I'm all alone."
This is terrible, I can't believe that people are so harsh, as to betray you in an imaginary video game. You poor guy, it is not like you use pink armor and call yourself gay-boy in a game that is comprised of the same 15 year-old virgin crowd that plays WoW. The truth is, nothing in this video surprised me, as there is nothing more racist or bigoted than a undersexed over sheltered teenage "gamer". - jmpeagle, on 11/27/2007, -2/+54imagine the abuse if he was Emoboy
- sherbertbones, on 11/27/2007, -0/+49"I want to hang you, cuz you're gay"
Then the 13 year old steps outside and goes to junior high, then gets his ass kicked while some bullies utter the same phrase. - Barclay1188, on 11/27/2007, -0/+49Work in retail, you'll gain a new appreciation for that comment.
- awfulshot, on 11/27/2007, -9/+58haha I don't know why your being dugg down, your post was better than the parent
- Urusai, on 11/27/2007, -1/+46This is why I don't use teamspeak, I don't want to listen to a bunch of retards with undropped testicles. Kill them, yes.
- bluenullity, on 11/27/2007, -6/+49The human race will never move on when deep down we are all just ***** to each other.
- siphre, on 11/27/2007, -12/+54Doesn't make their action any less excusable.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -6/+48Please, think of the gay Spartans. ):
- trueinfinite, on 11/27/2007, -2/+44gayboy, you should come play rainbow six vegas, people on there tend to be a much more mature crowd and it's a ton of fun. one thing i've noticed is that there's always a wave of childish players who have their parents buy them the game the first day its out, and then play the heck out of a game until it gets old to them and they move on.
i didn't buy halo 3 because i rented it for a week to see what kind of people were palying it, and i was so disgusted with the attitude of these people who have grown up knowing they never have to see each other face to face so they don't learn respect. i'm an avid, avid gamer. have been for 20 years, and one thing has always stood true.
who you play with is just as important as what you play. i'd put my live username up here, but i don't have your patience or tolerance for these peoples ignorance, i couldn't stand having even one of these wastecases talk to me. i apologize on behalf of all the respectful and mature gamers of the world. - inactive, on 11/27/2007, -3/+44is that your real halo name or just something you picked for this, but props on being pink me and my friend are pink every time .....we get hit on alot by guys that think were chicks
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -9/+50Basically, replace "halo" with "the internet".
- zachshmack, on 11/27/2007, -0/+38The funny thing is I doubt any of them would have the balls to talk that way one on one. Peer acceptance is a strange beast.
- Gabnoj, on 11/27/2007, -1/+39Deltro needs to get off our internet.
- Bricks, on 11/27/2007, -28/+65as I posted in the other thread (put a lot of time into it so adding it here too):
"Oh, he was flaunting it and putting it in their face." Which is true. It refers to the reality of the situation in a purely pessimistic way. Flaunting a quality that a lot of people consider negative in a communications forum is obviously going to get a certain kind of result.
But I don't believe that is the noteworthy discussion topic of this exercise. This video demonstrates what rampant intolerance exists for gays, especially via this particular communications forum (XBL). This is also not a great surprise to any compassionate person with their eyes open, but the particular results of this experiment demonstrate the degree of grotesqueness present via violent reactions, and hopefully will contribute toward some kind of change.
One could make the semiotics/deconstruction arguments about words and power, as it pertains to a handful of the comments. IE: "That is gay" being used with negative connotation, but without explicit negative direction at actual homosexuality. This is tremendously problematic, as even 1 on 1 conversation between friends leaves room for blurred intentions. But regardless of how strongly some people on XBL understand signs/signifiers (yahright), using "gay" negatively in a public forum will most certainly perpetuate hate for homosexuals.
Unfortunately, we are not even to begin with that semiotics issue in a serious way, because certain comments in this video take priority. Comments about hoping he likes single life, or comments that suggest he deserves violent treatment for being gay... These are clearly 100% negative about homosexuality, with a violent/hate-filled speech.
So, what needs to happen here?
Microsoft needs to decide what types of speech it allows on Xbox Live, and ACTUALLY get behind their decision. Perhaps they will find it detrimental to their community to allow gamers to display their sexual preference, even via PG gamertag. I wouldn't personally support this decision, but given the state of mankind's sexual tolerance, I would understand such a decision: it would be a (flawed) effort to protect people like "xxxGayBoyxxx" from this kind of abuse.
In either case, they NEED to be much much more ready to punish for hate speak, especially the violent kind. I'm not sure exactly how to go about this, as it becomes one user's word versus another until they start logging voicechat (which would then become an epic issue with privacy). Protecting users from hate speech is a pretty standard practice in internet communities, and XBL should open their eyes/ears/minds/hearts to the supersaturation of horrific degree of racism/sexism/sexual orientation devaluation that is present with their users. Their service is a cesspool for this *****; a breeding ground for hollow people to feel empowered and that its okay to persecute another for their beliefs. Yes, I judge these people openly, but that is my personal right as well. I do not advocate for their violent demise, nor do I invalidate the worth of their existence. This is a "courtesy," they themselves do not extend to their targets.
A good start for MS would be some kind of basic education about hatespeech, and a more obviously broken out "hatespeak" option when reporting users. That would be barebones, and is years overdue.
In terms of free speech, though I'm not an expert on the matter, I do believe both sides of the story are entitled to their perspective. What Microsoft wants on their chat is up to them really as well. But threats of violence shouldn't be taken lightly, especially with regard to hate crimes that people regularly die to.
To GayBoy and non-age12to30masculineheterosexuals everywhere, my heart goes out to you. You too deserve the experience of mindnumbing modern media, and social play on the internet. Stay proud of yourself, and tune out the noise when the going gets tough. Don't give up, for freedom can exist, and will only get there with your strength.
sincerely,
a compassionate, (proud!), heterosexual male
PS: Whenever someone tells me I'm "gay" for utterly destroying them at Halo, I usually respond, "Sorry, what? I couldn't hear you - I had too many dicks in my ears"
This obliterates their ability to speak about 70% of the time. They become recursively stupefied, like a housepet observing itself in the mirror. Such victories are soured 30% of the time when their response is "OMG you are SO gay." alas. - FujiwaraTofu, on 11/27/2007, -2/+37I'm pretty sure they realized what they were saying...
- Remmy, on 11/27/2007, -1/+35Blog it and post it to digg. Draw attention to it. If they are discriminating based on a name like that, then that downright repulsive. Who gives a flying ***** if you're straight, gay, cannibal, monkey, or a floating brain. You are playing a game. Everyone has the same right to play the damn thing as you.
- pegisys, on 11/27/2007, -1/+35If his name was blackboy he would be getting called ***** and have to listen to white kids do poor hip hop impersonations
- TheTaoOfBill, on 11/27/2007, -5/+38He has the best user name for it too
- 1town, on 11/27/2007, -5/+37Dude, you are to much a class act, you should have kept the names visible so we could have had proper justice. -.-
- bugsy187, on 11/27/2007, -7/+39The video makes me embarrassed for ripping on gay people in the past. Thanks for the post.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 11/27/2007, -6/+38Thanks for saying basically what badjoke said except longer and less funny.
