- Shipley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28I'm sure StarCraft and Warcraft and all sorts of games have had more matches played. This milestone is important because its the first console game to have this kind of success and on a pay service, no less. 500 million in 19 months is pretty damn good. thats like 600 games a minute.
- TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28If my calculations are correct that means:
50 million games using the stand-by glitch
75 million games where someone got cussed out by a whiny 12 year old
20 million games where somone stood in a corner and blew themselves up with grenades
1.8 billion total uses of the phrase "Powned" and "Noob" - TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Or Diablo 2, I can't tell you how many times I've created a game with a name I made by smashing the keyboard like "feewfrweujcf" and have it tell me "A game with that name already exists".
- SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Why do you retards insist on bashing Halo 2?
Seriously. The Article is just stating a fact.
Nobody was comparing it to CS or SC.
Honestly you guys are pathetic. Get over yourselves. - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I am really glad to see a milestone like this. It's great to see the XBox, and more specifically, XBox Live doing so well. This is really the first time a company has ever tried to make such a massively online connection between consoles, and to see it flourish is just great.
XBox Live, regardless of how you feel about Microsoft, really has changed the face of console gaming, much like how Wii is posed to in a couple of monthes. It really is an exciting time in consoles. - Koolice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12"What happens when you have a system with nothing worth playing..."
its called a Playstation 3. and what PS2 games have had 500 million online matches logged? ill wait..... - metroidchief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7if we could cut out those under 18, it would be a great thing indeed. Hopefully then we don't find out that there are a bunch of high voiced 25 year old idiots out there.
- wthnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I remember when me and my friends waited in line at midnight to get Halo 2 we drove back to my friends house and the 5 of us setup the xbox LAN for a long night of halo2 fun. Got into multiplayer and all of us were thinking "what is this?" The game felt unfinished though duel wielding was nice. The gaming session that night ended up instead only lasting about 1 hour. Needless to say over the weeks we came to play many games on halo 2 we adapted to it, but still I can honestly say the most fun I had on xbox was with halo 1 game multiplayer at friends house. Halo 1 was better you played people you knew for fun not 12 year olds swearing like sailors who didn't know the meaning of sportsmanship. People below 18 shouldn't be on halo 2.
- joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@wtfnow
Those last 2 sentences are completely true. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"50 million parents illegally supplying their underage children with games they shouldn't have."
Over here(Australia) it's not illegal to have an M game, the rating system is just a reccomendation. I expect it'd be no different in the USA. The only thing that ratings apply to is R products(Although we don't have an R rating for games...) Although with the recent postings on digg about M games not being sold to "Minors" i'm not too sure although that definately isn't going to apply to already purchased copies. - AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed, i signed on to my live account a while back and i couldn't find a fair game. Its all abunch of 6 year olds who think they are cool with that fancy new 17 by their name or 20-40 year olds who for some reason find not playing the game more fun that playing fair.
- LtCarter47, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I dunno, I think I like Halo 2 better. Sure, grenades were a lot more powerful in the first game, but man, that pistol was a pain in the ass. Whenever I play Halo 1, I miss all the new weapons.
- Tribute85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I just wished they opted to play elevator music during the blue re-connect screen over the kid screaming in their mic.
- mkjones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Comming from a WoW, Starcraft and Spore fan I can see why you didnt like it.
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Halo 2 is the only game that really started online console gaming. Name a decent shooter before it. Better yet, name a decent console game with more support and options brought to the table than halo 2, including gametypes, that came out before halo 2.
- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5After 30 seconds of gameplay? Play at least one level. That's just lame. Seriously.
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -11/+13And you've ruined all change of intelligent discussion. Way to go.
- subvertman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6true.
- adizzy615, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Does digg hate anything that's popular? This is a great acheivement, and obviously the folks at bungie did something right that were able to get to this milestone. I was expecting comments about what exactly about halo 2 that made it so popular. All I am seeing is halo sucks.
- mkjones, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Dur? Online gaming milestone? Not tech news?
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2that is quite impressive given the time span. i havent played halo 2 online, but i do hear a lot about standby cheating and little kids cussing and making the game experience less enjoyable. FPS online games sure do have potential
i think this maybe be a peek at how well online competitive console games will be in the future. cant wait for the new Smash brothers. and for some reason, i doubt there will be little 12 year olds making life miserable for that game. in all my years of playing smash, i've never seen a little immature kid play it for more than 5 minutes-- its that kinda game. but all things being equal, kudos to Halo 2. - tesseract18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised that they have had that many matches. I avoid online console multiplayer like the plauge, I mean they have good games, really good games, but I'm not the kind of person who enjoys playing with 7 year olds who think they are "leet", all the while screaming lines from anime and swears that they heard off of other people.
- residual, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5God damn allot of Halo 2 bashing going on. I'm going to wager all you haters just aren't any good at the game. This is a huge mile stone, although I'm sure 1/3 of the games lasted less then 3 minutes.
- mdogcamel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have played a fair ammount of the half billion games. I think that it is great that bungie has been getting so much recognition latley.
- jmdajr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Pretty cool news. Fun game.
- scotticus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Counter-Strike anyone??!
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Um, i was here from the start.... and i like halo 2 just as much. Its multiplayer is much more fast paced and its single player was an improvement to me. Sure you had to play as that arbitar guy, but it was still good old fashoined shooting and i still found it fun.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8It should be renamed from "Halo 2 Hits Half Billion Games Played!" to "Halo 2 Hits Half Billion Games Endured" You've no idea how many times i've wanted to quit the game it randomly placed me in....
- pin0chet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+110,224 games i've played on my GT (EeZyHoTShot)
assuming all player have played this amount, there would only be around 50,000 total gamertags who played Halo 2 - dylanA, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2i bet i have a few million games under my belt.
- doty1tm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2oh joy
- GeneralChang, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5the real question though is if the people playing were exploiting... flying around, intentionally lagging out the game, more here http://www.wired.com/news/games/0,2101,67515,00.html
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Look at xfire man, alot more hours have been put into CSS and CS 1.6 than starcraft or warcraft.
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7The only time I played Halo was with the beta PC version, and after 30 seconds of playing I uninstalled it and destroyed the CD I burned. Terrible game. No, not just because it was "beta" either.
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -14/+7I don't get how this isn't a completely pointless digg...
Digg me down if you want, but seriously: what's the point? It's just Bungie pimping Halo 2. - gamerage, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Don't forget rrrraaaaaaape!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3so what?... it would be more impressive if the 500million th player got free stuff such as going down to their headquarters and getting free Xboxes for life and unlimited games... Who disagrees?
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6You misspelled Halo 2, let me fix that for you..."Halo: The online expansion pack"
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6It's spelled "Pwned". And I think your estimates are incredibly low. You're saying that in a mere 15% of games, a whiny prepubescent twelve year old cusses someone out? It's my [not so] scientific anaylsis that these little tramps constitute at 76%-82%, depending on the time you play.
I suppose another statistic would be:
50 million parents illegally supplying their underage children with games they shouldn't have.
I can only imagine what Halo2 would be like with an 18+ rule. - windex99, on 10/12/2007, -19/+10Halo 2 has ruined online console gaming.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3350 games isn't something to brag about... the games are quick and most of them end with ppl leaving because they dislike the game type. With a number like that in comparison to others, seems like you didn't get your moneys worth yet.
- Bigcolby, on 10/12/2007, -17/+8This is impressive because of the pay-per-month service for a console over a relatively short amount of time (Starcraft's time has been like forever)
But...
Halo 1 was better - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+7What happens when you have a system with nothing worth playing...
No wonder Microsoft has given up on backwards compatiblity after porting Halo and Halo 2 to the EasyBake 360. - joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Who the hell is digging him down? Halo 2 is a great game, but any real Halo fan that was there from the begining obviously likes Halo better than Halo 2. In fact I haven't met a single real Halo original player that doesn't. So seriously, any real fans of the game should be digging this up, not down.
- TheHal, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4I don't know which would be more impressive.... 600 games a minute or 10 games a second. Anyhow... the Halo accomplishment is really good. I mean, CS has had more games in general, but not in the first 19 months... well that also depends on when you are saying the CS was release, Beta as a mod, or the 1.0 release, or when it hit the store shelf... etc etc
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -23/+11Somone find out how many hundreds of millions games Counterstrike has logged since its launch.
- rxn155, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2well i know i put at least 350 or more into that total!
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2seriously...get out of your parents basement.
