"technicolor" lol - gorkish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Windows XP x64 is a pretty decent OS, but it has some pretty big holes in it still.
First and formeost, it can't use 32 bit print drivers although there is not really a good reason why this is so. The main problem stems from the fact that due to windows broken ideas about print drivers, they are loaded in kernel memory. MS chose the easy way out and simply requires drivers for x64 that can interoperate in kernel memory instead of fixing the problem the right way -- requiring new drivers to be userland and implementing a VM for older driver compatibility. As a result of this, putting new x64 machines into a corporate network with many varied network printers (this is almost all corporate networks BTW) is either nearly impossible or a system admin's worst nightmare. Either way you slice it, it still stinks.
Secondly, x64 treats 32 bit apps like second class citizens. Fortunately it runs almost all of them just fine, as it should; however, they have decided to arbitrarily insist that they be installed into a "Program Files (x86)" folder. While this idea might at first seem like a good idea it causes many unintended problems with applications and installers which falsely make assumptions about their install location. Worse, it doesnt even work properly since some 32 bit apps still install to the "regular" "Program Files" location.
Apple's implementation of a 64 bit OS, OTOH is done properly, though they (NeXT) had their OS geared up for this kind of thing since the late 80's. 64-bit linux and open/free/netbsd installs are similarly simple since (most) all software simply gets compiled and run as 64 bit native, though the 32 bit compatibility layers here are still better than with x64. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow somebody recognized that the oh-so-stupid linear blog comment format is ultra stupid doubleplus stupid (and also that digg is vulnerable to da sploitz).
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The question on my mind is will you need to be running windows X64 to take advantage of the new code . . .
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0662 comments on this digg? where are they all?
- scotty588, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There was a spam attack on digg earlier by koolaidguy and he made a massive amount of comment spam in every story on the front page. Digg staff deleted all the accounts and all the comments he made.
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Call me when they support Linux64. No Vista shall ever run on my system.
- Loucipher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's what Steam had to say:
For those of you running with a 64-bit capable AMD® processor, along with the Windows® 64-bit operating system, Half-Life 2 and Lost Coast are now available in native 64-bit versions. Steam will automatically detect your OS and run the appropriate version the next time you run these games.
We've been working with AMD to get the Source™ engine up and running in 64-bit mode to make sure we're taking advantage of these hardware configurations. This is just a first step for Valve into 64-bit. Going forward, we realize that more and more of our customers will be running with 64-bit processors and we will be set to take true advantage of them. - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seriously you should be more like Adrian Lamo, just do some funny little exploit, then email the admin and tell them how to fix it instead of f'ing up the comments with ur spam.
- ompalaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I won't be happy until I see a native Linux version.
- ChuyMatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Track and kill the spamming bastards!
- Wasuregachi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Would be cool but I've beard the 64-bit XP is still totally unstable. Not true? - piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What I want to know is... why did we go from 32 bit to 64 bit, why not just go straight on to 128 bit... or more?
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For the guy wanting to know about his Intel 64: from the steam forums

Wait, will it work with intels 64bit extension?
not all, intel's got two EMT64 which is compatible with Amd's x86_64 and they got that IA64 which is not compatible with x86_64. " - fuelvolts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
"Would be cool but I've beard the 64-bit XP is still totally unstable. Not true?"
NOt true, been using it for months now - it is more stable since it is built on Server 2003 Code, not Windows 2000 code like regular XP
If you have Windows x64 installed on your machine, then yes it will work regardless of AMD or Intel. - eddieo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Koolaidguy is an *****!
- sky_blue_eyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats pretty gay... i thought this post had a thousand comments, i was like whoa, people really like commenting now!
- estel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, this works on all AMD64 bit processors as long as they run Windows x64. So no EMT64 extensions :)
Just finished downloading the patch :D. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"techno color', does the poster thing the 64bit is referring to colors here?"
Who knows what the hell he was thinking when he wrote that... - xiloki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This just might have me installing windows again. And here I was walking around clean and happy. What to do, what to do.
- dementedd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0rofl
- Buddybot111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0punk, so its ok with the standard athlon64?
- addisonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its all 64 bit arch... its not like they would exclude, think about it, applications compiled with 64 bit support will do both Intel and AMD, AMD is just using this as advertising, anyways, neat of valve, lots of steam naysayers, but with the upgradeability of the source engine... come on, source will just get better and better even as UE3 starts to roll out
- FunkyJunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What advantages will the user actually see as a result of the transfer to 64-bit?
- PunkFenixJT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nevermind, read my Steam update, im good
- bantam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its a free update.
- PunkFenixJT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait they only refer to the FX's....what about typical run of the mill 64s?
- pdenton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is going to sound dumb, but the press release only mentions the 64 FX processors. will it not be compatible with the standard athlon64?
- tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wtf? Anyways, it sucks how you need XP 64 but meh, does it make a difference in gameplay?
- Mudcrutch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very cool.. good job valve..
- rebz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes, he does. "techno color", does the poster thing the 64bit is referring to colors here?
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn you Koolaidguy! Damn... you!!
- mikeroySoft, on 10/19/2009, -0/+0yah, but notice the timestamps... all at the exact same time. It's a script, but yes, ***** koolaidguy.
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1psylenc speaks the truth.
- victimofkratina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is this a free upgrade? i havent had steam installed for awhile now..
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nobody cares koolaidguy.
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes, of course this works with ALL amd 64 processors. athlon xp's and older don't do 64 bit. ALL athlon 64's do 64 bit, hence the name, athlon 64. the fx's are just top of the line- the ultimate of the athlon 64's. the "fx" is the little signal that says 'buy me' to the ones who have something burning a hole in their pockets.
sry for any perceived sarcasm. - mikeroySoft, on 10/19/2009, -2/+2Ok, so after reading koolaidguy's blog it makes sense... Dig is being exploited all the time and people don't realize it (it's done less obvious than as koolaidguy makes an example of)
Yah, it's annoying, but it's something which needs to be addressed by the digg developers, otherwise stuff like this will just continue - Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Only 3 spam accts? weak.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Halo 2 sucked.
- Makyla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0intel is better.
- treytech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0QUIT WITH THE SPAM ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Muahahaha, I love it. One of the best comments that I've seen in the last week. :)

http://fuh-q.com - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0koolaidguy is being a spammer and screwing with the site and multiple accounts.
- CEpeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dugg. This better work on my P4 (with EMT64) or I'll be pissed.
- Teh_Psyren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Leet spam.
- mikeroySoft, on 10/19/2009, -2/+1He's not an idiot. Just because you don't like how he showed how vulnerable digg is to manipulation, doesn't make him an idiot. Assuming he's not just some script kiddie and actually spent some time coding whatever it is he's using, he'd have to be at least somewhat smart. Certainly an idiot is not capable of this.
Simply because you don't understand his motives does not make HIM the idiot. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No, he really is an idiot. He could have just sent them an email, telling them about the problem instead of spamming digg all the time.
- Amadeus2490, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0
instead of doing this, why not just e-mail an admin with your technical data, and what they can do to improve if if you really want to help this site?? - mikeroySoft, on 10/19/2009, -2/+0hm, looks like someone found an interesting little script... enter digSpam
