- TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -12/+118That's pathetic, I thought the whole point of this episodic content fad was that you'd get a small game every 9 months, not every 18 months. Better franchises release whole sequels in the time it takes Valve to make an expansion.
- pixarman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+65Hello....it's winter and it's 2007 right now...
- psg188, on 10/12/2007, -7/+44Yeah, other franchises do take less time, but Valve is not an "ordinary" company... they are a fantastic company, and have shown us in the past that good games take time...
so be patient, whenever they release it... it will be well worth the wait, look how long it took them to make Half Life 2...
I used to make jokes like "Yeah that'll happen when they release Half Life 2!"
but was it worth the wait? lets see... "Quite possibly the best game of all time" ~ PC Gamer..
yeah, I think its worth waiting - blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37TF2 has already been delayed 7 years, what's another 10 months?
- BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -5/+29I don't ***** care about the ***** POS3 and the XBox 360. Half Life is NOT a console game, it is a game so ***** awesome consoles beg for it until they get it. Episodic content doesn't make ANY ***** SENSE being shipped like a regular ***** game to regular ***** consoles. The episodic Half Life stuff was an innovation of Steam that now means absolute ***** and is causing MY enjoyment to be postponed so the 5 people with a Playstation 3 can play their ***** version on the same day as me.
I HATE EVERYTHING. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Yeah that threw me for a loop too. They might as well say Holiday 2007 to be more accurate. I was fully thinking it would be coming out within the next month.
- BigEasy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20If you listen to the developer commentary on Ep1, you can get a feel for how a couple hours of gameplay really can take 18 months to be lovingly crafted. But that's not to say that all the elements are going to take that long. If I could, I'd actually pay for the whole set right now and have them release TF2 and Portal and Ep2 at different intervals, as they are completed.
- Kaaya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time
At least we also have the Rapture to look forward to. - BigEasy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"Fall is what we're targeting" = "Winter is what you'll actually get."
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24Yeah, it can be a good idea (See: Sam & Max) just not when a developer who delays everything is the one behind it. EA should be banned from microtransactions and Valve banned from episodic content.
- Detritus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I like BigEasy's suggestion. Let us pre-order Episode 2 on Steam and give us Portal and TF2 as they are ready instead of waiting all year for them.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+13I understand where everyone's coming from, and I also think that this sort of dragged out production on Valve's part completely shreds the purpose of episodic content distribution, but you have to remember that it isn't just 'Half-Life 2: Episode Two' that's being made for the PC here.
Valve has also put it upon themselves to simultaneously develop two other full Source titles too, Team Fortress 2 and Portal, both of which are going to be released together with Episode Two. On top of that, they're also developing all of these titles or both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 console platforms, so there is a ton more work they're putting up with right now than you'd guess offhand. They want a slick altogether launch for all three platforms when its all done.
If this were only Episode Two being developed and dragged on, of course, I think they should have their asses kicked by now for not sticking to their episode mantra while working on, well, one episode, but that isn't the case. Maybe Episode Three will come quicker, if it isn't toiled over and packaged in like Two is going to be.
I'm bummed for the wait, but I'm excited for the finished product! - Zips, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Uh, the only official statement is that it is slated for Fall of 2007. This is from Valve, not from a website or two jumping over the made up non-sense that it is slated for Winter 2007.
By your statement, it's still slated for Fall of 2007. I received my response direct from a Valve staff member (Doug Lombardi) after I mailed him immediately after this confusion hit the Internet.
Furthermore, this is the official press release from EA:
http://info.ea.com/news/pr/pr885.pdf
Feel free to search the document. Nowhere in it will you find the word "Winter" - Zips, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14This is incorrect.
They are targeting a Fall 2007 release date. I've emailed Valve's Doug Lombardi myself and this was his response.
"Fall is what we're targeting."
From: http://www.csnation.net/viewnews.php/8625/
While it is still a delay, it is NOT slated for Winter, but rather Fall. - Rabbethan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11God, I don't even really want HL2: E2...but Portals intrigues the hell out of me. After seeing the trailer for it, I played Narbacular Drop(which has the same core gameplay elements, and was made by the team who is working on portals.)
- darthsuo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Hey, why is everyone ragging on Valve so much? They may take forever to get their games out there, but god DAMN are they good. Would you rather they made crappy games with one year development cycles?(not that I'm pointing any fingers *cough* *coughEAcough*)
And although they kinda missed the whole point of episodic content, at least they're trying! - nyx210, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10o.O
- frase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10As an Aussie, Winter sounds okay and Autumn is even better :D
Seriously though, why can't people talk months or quarters instead of seasons. Don't they know that there's a southern hemisphere and people live here?! - Pirate45, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9EA scares me. I hope Valve doesn't go the way of Westwood.
- SurrealDream, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Come on chaps! Don't be too disheartened!
# Well the weather outside is frightful, but the Grav Gun is delightful, and when there's no place to go, let's all stare at Alyx's arse while she dangles from a cliff # - Ouze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I just want to play some Team Fortress already.
- Rinkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This is not episodic content. This is ridiculous.
- g3buz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12@thesaladman: which "better franchise" releases sequels every 18 months?
- DutchMaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7yea, I just hope C&C 3 is not going to let me down! I loved westwood, i even went there and got a tour
- BitWarrior, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Actually, EP2 was originally scheduled for November, 2006 =/
- Fragalishus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8So by Valve's calendar fall or winter 2007 means it will be released spring or summer 2008. They should scrap the entire concept of episodic content and bundle Episode 2 and 3 in to one game called Half-Life 3, maybe throw in Episode 1 for good measure to make it a longer game. This would put the release date between HL2 and HL3 at about the same as between 1 and 2, around 5 years.
That's basically what's happening anyway, but their BS marketing spin tries to make you think you're getting a deal, or getting games faster, when you're not. Yeah Ep. 1 was half the price, and came out pretty quick, but it was only 1/4 of a game, if that. They added one new NPC, the zombine, and HDR. Yippy...
Until they fix Steam (eating 5-10 and sometimes 50% cpu while trying to game) then 3rd party devs won't see a dime from me. Of course I'm getting TF2 but all 3rd party devs are SOL. I love the company and their games but Steam can suck a nut. - ryanknapper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Please, for the love of me, put Portal in a box and I'll pay for it all by itself!
- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Same. Westwood Studios was such a great company.
- Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Man, for the wait we've endured this better be one hell of an episode. I agree that Valve should have stuck to full titles instead of 1/3 of one every 1 1/2 years or so. Still, Portal and TF2 look to be worth the wait.
- Providence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Uh, they changed it to Autumn. Re-read the article. They updated it.
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've been waiting a decade for a certain game to come out...
- NoNameHere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Indeed. Valve: 2, Gamers: 0.
- LGod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6There are some who call me.. Tim...
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Actually Oblivion was commonly referred as the best game of 2006. Half-Life 1 was known as the best game of all time before Half-Life 2. Halo 2 has been known as the best console shooter of all time. Anyone who would say Halo 2 was the best game of all time needs to be kicked in the nuts.
Half-Life and its sequel are actually really good games. There are a few games that I can really call an experience and Half-Life was one of them. When you compare it to the best in its genre that predated that game (compare to say... Quake 2) Half-Life was years beyond. Half-Life also had a great mod community. I haven't seen such great mods since Duke Nukem 3d (when they were called Total Conversions). It's easy to say that best games ever is all a matter of personal opinions.. me, Half-Life 1 is a good candidate.
Half-Life 2 did not give as good as an impression on me, however I have to give Valve one thing, it lived up to its hype. I miss the cut down variety of enemies that HL offered, but maybe we'll see them return in the episodic content. Although Half-Life 2 wasn't the first to use the Havoc physics, I'd say no other game has utilized it as well. Also from a technical standpoint Half-Life 2 gives you the best power for your performance. It's one thing to make a game that looks good on a high-end system, but to go through the extra mile to make a game look great on even a low-end system shows that Valve does not only make a game that people want to play but can play. I give Valve props for that.
Also Steam needs its tweaks but it has gone a long way. If it gets a little extra work done on it, it can be a great thing. As long as they don't Duke Nukem Forever with episode content, I'm willing to wait the wait. - mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I got sick of EA once they bought the NFL license because NFL 2K5 was a superior game.
- kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Sigh, Fortress Forever will probably be out of beta before this...
- LiberalAK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This winter??
You mean like, in the next couple days?
Cause it sure is winter out there...
And I know the winter out side is sure not *last* winter.
So it must mean that outside right now is "this" winter. - Sugars, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Word to that frase.
Episode 2 better be damn long. - Eleo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This ***** is just absurd now.
- kryptobs2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5so basically your saying your're not going to play what you admit is a great game because in your opinion.. wait for it.. it's got a stupid name?
- Hawking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I for one shall welcome our new vaporware overlord.
- DutchMaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5its Valve, theres always a delay!
- beee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7it's a statement from EA and Valve so how can it be incorrect?
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4EP2 was set to out Jan 2007 then March 2007 then Spring 2007 now Winter 2007...
- LGod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Holy damn Half Life kicks the ***** out of Halo..... Just had to say it
- DarthDemo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Look how long it has taken to get TF2 to this point. Is it even finished? Maybe that's part of the hold-up. Maybe they are trying to integrate Portal technology into HL2:E2 and it's more of a rework than Valve has initially planned. At least I'll (hopefully) have a kewl present for my kid and his 360 come Xmas.
- matthall28, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Im pretty sure they mean holiday 2007, not winter. Unless they mean the END of CANADIAN winter because in some parts of Canada we have snow till like March or April
- wolvyne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Damn it Gabe... You know we're going to buy it so quit making us wait. Makes me angry and you don't want to see me when I'm angry! .... Usually just end up eating pizza and having a beer, that whole Hulk thing takes to much energy.
- Drehmini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I hope TF2 is finished.. After watching those HD trailers.. It looks to be a big hit.
- LGod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Viva Quake Team Fortress !
It was (is) the *****. -
