- edmdusty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+198To see him just jump over the hammer brothers like that pisses me off when I think of all the time I spent getting killed by those ***** when I was a kid.
- justintime2002, on 10/12/2007, -5/+157He ran into the block at the base of the flag in 8-3. That half-second could have made all the difference.
- dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -7/+154Wow that is awesome, the jumps are perfect. I didn't even know you could jump over the plants from the pipes.
- Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -2/+130Sorry for the comment abuse but somebody had to say something.
STOP CRYING FAKE!
There was no cheating/hacking involved in making this speed run:
The pipe in 4-2 that takes him to the warp zone is a glitch in the game's programming NOT a cheat.
When he jumps over the piranha plants it looks like he hits them, but he doesn't... try it yourself. The hit detection is nowhere near perfect in this game.
When he wall-jumps off the pipe near the end, thats a glitch too, no cheating necessary
Finally, when it looks like he jumps right through bowsers hammers, he actually IS jumping through bowsers hammers. Again, this is a glitch in the hit detection
So while he does exploit the faults and glitches in the programming, there's no other trickery involved. This is nothing that can't be done on the original cartridge/hardware. - imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+125"He ran into the block at the base of the flag in 8-3. That would have ended the clock with 243 left, which would give you three fireworks and thus waste at least 5 seconds. It's best to assume that the guy doing crazy ass wall jumps knows what he's doing. ;) - elisha330, on 10/12/2007, -4/+126Yeah, i didnt know you could jump over them either. Everytime he did it i cringed thinking he was going to die! haha
- whoisKeel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+101These are well-known and well-documented bugs. It isn't fake or cheated, he just practiced like hell.
- Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -0/+85Its a glitch, basically from what I understand the vine is considered the same type of event(program-wise) as a warp pipe. The way the game determines which destination to take you to dependes on what part/section of the level you are on. However, in this case, the vine is close enough to the pipe that if you move the screen just enough to reach the pipe, but not enough to leave the 'vine zone' then the game confuses the pipe for the vine and you end up in the sky instead of the ground.
Thats more-or-less how it works. Sorry if my explanation sucks. - Brightstar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+87Don't lie coyforce. It is not tool-assisted. This was done real time by a player with an NES. Speed Demos Archive doesn't allow tool assisted runs (or even real time played on an emulator) as per site rules. http://speeddemosarchive.com/
- andrewg1990, on 10/12/2007, -1/+73Hello. I am Andrew Gardikis. I was shocked when I just looked at the archive.org page and my videon had thousands of views... nowe I know where they are coming from. This video is not fake. I used an NES and a controller to do this. If you want an FAQ, you can view my youtube page.
BTW If you were wondering, I am 17.
Here's my youtube video with an FAQ.

any questions and I'll answer them for the next few minutes. - Supurcell, on 10/12/2007, -15/+68This is more entertaining: the most frustrating Super Mario level ever created.

- macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -8/+56But.. how do you kill someone who has no life?
- smigs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+51Something looks weird. He seems to jump right through stuff. Like right at the end, he totally goes right through the hammers. 3 successive frames:

http://speeddemosarchive.com/Mario1.html - parker38, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46What version is this guy playing? The warp in 4-2 is a vine on my NES.
- tylerjames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42what kind of a n00b doesn't know that you can just run over the smaller gaps without falling?
- imdwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Actually, I think that pause at the end of 8-3 was intentional.
Why? Check the timer. If he hadn't stopped there, he would have hit the flag pole with three seconds left. That would have meant fireworks at the end of the level, which would have added to the length of his run. - beerbaron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43"Theres really are two types of speed runs, those that are legit and take a long time..."
I think the purpose of speed runs is to NOT take a long time - gcauthon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38@Saiing
Yes, you can run across small gaps without falling. Anyone who's ever played the game more than a few minutes knows this. - tcquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38The best part is all the random stuff he didn't have to do, but did to show off. Grabbing extra coins, hitting a star that wasn't used, etc.
- todd.cole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34He is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation inherent to the programming of SMB. He is the eventuality of an anomaly, which despite Shigeru Miyamoto's sincerest efforts he has been unable to eliminate from what is otherwise a harmony of mathematical precision. While it remains a burden to sedulously avoid it, it is not unexpected, and thus not beyond a measure of control. Which has led this video, inexorably, to digg.
- TDR25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Unreal! That guy had so many close calls till it wasn't funny, and not one damn power up...who the ***** is this guy?
- mdmoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29As someone who has paid close attention to speed runs for a long time, and has tried to recreate the world records in this game, I have to say that this run is 100% legit. The flagpole in 8-3 was completely intentional. Many, many people have timed how long it takes to get through the screen with the 3 fireworks (hitting either the top or bottom of the pole) and it takes WAY longer to wait for the fireworks than it does to jump to the bottom of the pole, pause, and then hit the pole without getting the fireworks.
"Another place he lost time was in the first 'shortcut coin-rooms', where he seemed to pause on a jump."
Untrue. The timer shows 380 when he leaves the room. That is the quickest you can possibly get out of that room.
There were two spots in 8-1 that he lost precious milliseconds, though. Both times he turns backwards lost him a few milliseconds. The jump over the 3 goombas and over the wall beyond them can be done, but I've only succeeded at it about three times. I don't know that anyone has used that in a speed run before, as it is extremely hard to pull off. Also at the end when he turns backwards to get over the 2nd to last pipe, he didn't need to turn backwards. You can jump over the 3 turtles, hit the ground and jump again without hitting the piranha plant.
Overall, I'm impressed by this run, but I still think it shouldn't be a world record. Many people consider using glitches in the game to help your time to be a no-no. He should have had to go up the vine to the 4-2 warp room, should have had to hit the hidden block in 8-4 instead of using the wall jump, and also should have had to go to the pipe across the pit to go down into the water section of 8-4. But I can't deny his skill. - Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Don't know why 'whioskeel' is being dug down. He's right, its just a glitch in the collision detection. It's very much repeatable and there's no foul-play involved. Unless you consider exploiting glitches to be the same as cheating.
and @smigs, that is also very much possible and repeatable. The collision detection wasn't real accurate. - skywake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28actually, I played SMB on Wii VC just then
it is indeed possible to jump over those "plant pipes"
try it yourself - markpoepsel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29I've beaten in in 10 on a regular 8-bit machine.
Literally 10 minutes. It's a lot longer than 5 if you think about it.
What blows my mind are the 8-1 to 8-4 levels. Even if he used emulation and the pipe glitch, those are unfakeable.
I wouldn't fret about the near-misses on hammers. That's part of the game.
All I can say is I have a new project once I finish my thesis. - CelebVoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28And how he hit the brick under one while jumpin on top of the next one, THAT ***** WAS HILARIOUS!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29I hear chicks dig this stuff
- Shuk, on 10/12/2007, -9/+34This just blew my mind.
- MinaSulo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24How the ***** did he kill that hammer throwing dude mid-air?
- CelebVoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Seriosuly, that is the most awesome five minutes of my life today. I was laughing the whole time at the ***** he did. How he even jumped twice when he was upagainst a pipe, AMAZING *****
- soothslayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23i suppose we are supposed to assume this is how Mario, in all his superiority, would traverse the Mushroom Kingdon and rescue the princess. instead, we settle for our own interpretations of his story, guided by our clumsy, stubby fingers and greed for coins
- bob_the_alien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23the jump twice on the pipe was awesome, that part has always taken me some time, to get that jump set up, and he just did it, like it was nothing. I am in awe at his skill, and lets not even mention jumping over the plants, didn't even know you could do that.
- labbrat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Chicks like me who got a Nintendo for Christmas at a young age can dig it! My favorite babysitter was the one who could beat the game in 1 life...
- Qwiggalo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22He made 3 few millisecond mistakes. Could be done less then 5 minutes probably.
- natjo1986, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20The fact that you are browsing Digg at 1 AM .... nevermind.
- cevil203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19he beat it in 5 minutes...i cant even beat it after 15 years...
- andrewg1990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I have a video of me not using warp zones. 19:57
- gravelocity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I think someone should write a song about him.
- imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"The reason he's able to pass through objects like that is because the hammers and such don't actually hit mario's hitbox, the area where he can die."
No it isn't, it's because the game doesn't check for downward collisions when Mario has an upward velocity. He can therefore easily pass through the pirhana plant beneath him as long as he has an upward velocity. - KMye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Wow, I feel old...just wait until little ***** 10 years younger than you dog on your MGS or RE4...
- Ebeniz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17ORLY? Speed run of Super Mario Bros. done on April 10 2007.
- ploke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15You sir, are amazing.
- wiihuck, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24he's just that good.
- Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14@Saiing
If you run over small gaps (press b while moving) you actually just run over them.
Edit: Got beaten by cauthon :/ - yyz_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13You've obviously never played SMB. The "Olympic jumps" over the piranha plants are possible, I have tried them myself. So is the jump over the lava in 8-4, I've also done that myself. It's not very easy, but it's possible. You don't need a game genie to do that. You just need to suck less.
- smigs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Hmm...
http://img99.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mario4lx9.jpg - tylerjames, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14from the rules on the site:
Emulators: We will NOT accept demos recorded on emulators (ZSNES, VBA, etc). This is not because we think you are cheating; it's just that we can't prove that you're not. Tricks such as slowing games down undetectably on emulators are widely known, so in the interest of fairness, they won't be allowed to count as records. Also many emulators have a lot of bugs and slowdown, even if they are set to automatically adjust the framerate. Note that an exception is made for official emulators such as Nintendo's NES emulator that comes with some GameCube games, although owing to the "deflickering" video effect applied by many official console emulators it is nearly always preferable to play on the original hardware from the perspective of video quality. - wompninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13nah this is totally legit I used to play super mario everyday at work and we'd time ourselves. its not as hard as you think you just have to have eight hours a day to play it. haha...
