- WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Ignorance or FUD?
I think I know a certain someone that applies to.
I make it a point to bury everything wageslaven related. - NeoTechni, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"I make it a point to bury everything wageslaven related."
So do I, and I've noticed quite a few others do too.
You'd think he'd realize it and adapt accordingly.
ie: Toning the ### down - Thorlord, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3ok, so they used memory when they should have used the word storage.... i think you are overreacting a bit much.
- NeoTechni, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"No they aren't. Neither of those words were even used"
EDIT: Oops, I saw it. But it still applies in both situations. - NeoTechni, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I can't help but notice you're now stupid enough to argue againt developers, and the page you linked to says nothing about what you are claiming
" intentionally confusing "Memory" and "Storage" "
No they aren't. Neither of those words were even used
"but games can be on many discs"
Not all games. Especially not FPSs where playing online/co-op could force you to switch discs at the end of every level.
And having a minimum 3 discs raises publishing costs, and developer complexity. For one, now every disc has to have all those shared assets like sound, textures, models. 1 25 gig bluray doesn't neccesarily divide up perfectly into 3 DVDs. Plus PS3 games can be on 50 gig dual layered blurays. No publisher wants to forgo 1 disc for 6.
" Xbox 360 reserves 32MB for the system, PS3 reserves far more"
http://www.innerbits.com/blog/2007/08/21/ps3-180-sdk/
PS3 reserves 48 MB of RAM, and 24 MB of VRAM. The VRAM is used as the framebuffer so devs are still using it, and devs have to reserve that much on 360 as well cause the 10 MB of EDRAM is not large enough for even a 720p framebuffer
So PS3 reserves 16 MB more. That's not far more. And interesting enough, 360 also reserved 64 MB of system RAM when it came out. MS, like Sony, worked to reduce it.
Also, YOU got memory and storage confused, not the developers. PS3s OS footprint doesnt affect the size of games on disc. - wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Good thing you brought up that innerbits article, its the one that informed me about the PS3's memory reservation issues.
Does your game permit User-controlled in-game music? IF yes, that is 12MB more (72 + 12) -- 84 MB Total.
"The second new utility is a music utility, which will allow developers to give consumers the choice of streaming their own music in game. This utility’s current weight – a hefty 12MB – is likely to be reduced in future releases. Readers should note that the Xbox 360 supports a similar feature (at no extra cost to developers)"
Does your game want to use the Friend list too? IF yes, that is 16MB more (72 + 12 +16 ) -- 100 MB Total.
"The Friend List utility has gone from 24MB to 16MB (while the online startup utility remains at 8MB)."
Does your game want to use the Friend list too? IF yes, that is 20MB more (72 + 12 +16 + 20 ) -- 120 MB Total.
"The video chat utility also sees its base memory requirement drop to 20MB"
Does your game want to use the PSP as a remote display? IF yes, that is 8MB more (72 + 12 +16 + 20 + 8 ) -- 128 MB Total.
"extra display. Similar to the PSP remote play utility, this one will require 8MB"
It has been said (I believe in that article in fact) that is going to mean that PS3 games will some get this, some get that.
*ALL* the features on the Xbox 360 -- video, chatlist, personalized music, messenger -- are in that 32MB. Thats it. No more. The rest is available to the developer.
GO and re-read your own linked article.
And, read this too:
http://ozymandias.com/archive/2007/03/22/More-Context-on-Memory-Reservation-Issues-on-PS3.aspx - WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I know he will reply...but when...then again, he might just ignore it because theres no real arguing to that.
