All cross platform and open source, with network multiplayer, of course. Oh yeah, the graphics don't suck, either. - Cimlite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14That just bull.
Quality has overall gone down, just as it has with music and movies. Price does not reflect that since it's gone up. Basically we have big companies scared to death of taking any form of risks, just pumping out rehashed products under new names.
We're not "spoiled" just because we don't want to keep playing prettier versions of the same games over and over. There's also a lot of games that comes out with horrendous bugs, even on consoles these days, just because the developers can fix that after the release via patches. It shouldn't be accepted. - actionscripted, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I agree to a point. But the shift in consumer power has lent the indie studios a hand in producing content and getting better distribution. That goes for games, movies, and music. If that means I won't have to read about "The Sims 6" that's fine with me.

The Best Free MMORPG List (and MMO's)

Though it may still be in beta at the moment, Warrock is another good freebie. - hutchy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://www.trackmanianations.com/

- VijchtiDoodah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm suprised Soldat (soldat.pl) wasn't on this list. Almost any site for free games you go to will rate this as one of their top ten -- despite the fact that its screenshots look horrendous to anyone who hasn't played the game.
- MadChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You have to include the price of replacing your CD/DVD burner when StarForce kills it.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This isn't completely untrue. One might argue that video games took a shift from gameplay to design when CDROM started becoming popular. There were some fantastic early CDROM games (7th Guest, Myst) but in the early 90's everybody loved oohing and aahing at purty 320x240 256 colour video at 5 FPS. We lived with VGA for a long time and I think we started getting spoiled when SVGA and CDROM came into play.
It's fantastic to see such Abuse, a totally awesome platformer with unique controls, available for free, but it's a little painful to play when you compare it to modern equivalents. Video games are better than ever nowadays. My memories of Wing Commander are very fond, but it feels incredibly simplistic when I play it now. - darthsuo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Come on, quality in general has NOT gone down; the same number of good games come out now as always. Gamer's, as with any other group, are always inclined to believe in "the good old days" but to tell the truth, many game mechanics that made the oldies so great are now dismissed as interface gimmicks. And anyway, we only remember the good games; so of course the past looks better.
But I agree with you too a point, big companies ARE scared to take risks, which is why I'm excited about episodic gameplay and this indie boom. - aidanr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4also...

Gridwars 2 (freeware)
The author had to remove it due to issues with Microsoft, but its still out there. Its really (really) addictive. Runs on Windows and MacOS X. Google for it.

This is the *free* version, as said above. There is no CD protection. Someone needs to lay off the weed - getting a little bit P a R a N o i D ! - SanderScamper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg for Star Control 2 ported to modern PCs. The Ur-Quan Masters remake is simply one of the greatest games ever made.

You are the one to lay off the weed.
TMN comes with Star Force protection (yes, although it*s free).
The developers justified this with the similarity of TMN to TM Sunrise and the Original. With encrypting TMN they didn*t want to make it too easy for the crackers to draw conclusions on how to crack TMN. - sgtpinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Elbart
How can it have Star Force if it has no CD!!? I play TMN often. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It really is. They took all the best aspects of the PC and 3DO versions and squished them into one shiny package. The result is absolutely breathtaking. The voice acting is fantastic, the dialogue is philisophical and hilarious, the character design is wonderful and hideous, and the sense of accomplishment when you get ANYWHERE in this very difficult game is tremendous!
I only wish there was a way to skip out on the combat or something. I was better at it when I was a kid but I seem to be getting sluggish in my geriatric 20's! - thepatryn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My favourite games:
