- DrCyclops, on 02/17/2009, -10/+133Yes, Grand Theft Auto 4 was a true tour de force of nuanced storytelling:
Niko: "I hate killing. I want to be a new man."
Organized Crime Guy: "I will pay you $5000 to kill this man."
Niko: "Okay."
Repeat for 30 hours. - bmcnally, on 02/17/2009, -2/+91"Hey, Niko, want to go see some big American titties?"
Rockstar is the Dickens of our time. - Totz83, on 02/17/2009, -2/+34"Let's go Bowling"
FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU - Zegarek, on 02/17/2009, -1/+32Wait is this a positive story about GTA? From a reputable and well known news source? It has to be a sign of the apocalypse.
- kinseyincanada, on 02/17/2009, -3/+29people need to get the stick out of their ass, GTA 4 was a fantastic game, it had a great story, characters that were memorable and that you could connect to. The game drew you in and made you care about the characters. If peple just wanted another same old same old GTA where you just screw around for hours then go play San Andreas. Dont blame rockstar for trying to actually change a series and create a brand new experience for a franchise.
- Atomic05, on 02/17/2009, -1/+23Its better than becoming a taxi driver and then doing missions driving back and forth to therapy sessions.
- ultraJesus, on 02/17/2009, -0/+21Reply yes then immediately call back and say you can't make it. You won't lose any respect points.
- ChrisDaneOwens, on 02/17/2009, -4/+24someone bought a ps3..
- falcyn, on 02/17/2009, -0/+16Little Jacob: "Mumblemumblemumble mon one love"
Tour de force, indeed! - slyzxx, on 02/17/2009, -2/+17First before GTA IV came out people were druling over the game now its "ooh GTAIV is soooo boring"
- ManaByte, on 02/17/2009, -3/+17How much did Rockstar PR pay Time to write that? Or did they just get them hookers?
- mywhitenoise, on 02/17/2009, -4/+18Are people really this insecure of their sexuality?
- Thorpe, on 02/17/2009, -0/+14'Grand Theft Auto IV: Liberty City' - TIME noobs.
- AManWithNoName, on 02/17/2009, -0/+14And then let them kill said hookers to get their money back
- falcyn, on 02/17/2009, -0/+13Uh... you do realize Live Silver is free and still lets you purchase DLC, right? You don't need to subscribe for that.
Also, Lost and Damned costs 1600 points ($20). - miggyb, on 02/17/2009, -1/+14Syntax Error: Object 'Video' cannot take ownership of '!!!'
- AManWithNoName, on 02/17/2009, -0/+12Right now, Jack Thompson is rolling over in his grave.
I know he's not dead yet, I just assumed he would be sleeping in holes in the ground now that he's homeless. - GenericJoshman, on 02/17/2009, -1/+11***** this kind of comment.
- bigdoglj52, on 02/17/2009, -1/+11***** like this pisses me off, you can say something like that for anygame
racing game: race around in circles and for a change there are a few different turns
FPS: run around not seeing your feet shooting the same aliens over and over
RPG: jump over 9000 times to get your jumping skill up 1 point - falcyn, on 02/17/2009, -0/+10Except with Carmen, for some reason. Otherwise, that's the most useful advice ever.
- falcyn, on 02/17/2009, -1/+10This is true, why are people digging him down?
It's a heck of a lot easier to express what you're trying to express when your characters' faces can actually show emotion, rather than being a drawn-on sprite. I'm not saying GTA's graphics were incredible, but for the level of object denseness - rendering an entire city - they're pretty damn impressive.
For another example, play through Half Life 2 and try not to be blown away by the emotion Alex shows that just wouldn't have been possible in HL1.
As written in the article:
"One of the challenges of telling stories in video games is that the entire medium is subject to technological upgrades on a regular basis. Mastering it requires surfing a learning curve that is steep and, so far, infinite. With the previous generation of hardware, for example, characters' faces were too flat to sustain real closeups, and there just wasn't enough horsepower to support a lot of Stoppardian banter. "We simply couldn't stream in much dialogue, 'cause it was so hard to stream the world in on PlayStation 2," Houser explains, "whereas now we can have the characters constantly talking to you. The emotions on PS2 had to be quite black and white. Now we can get a little bit more gray in there."" - derbloodlust, on 02/17/2009, -2/+10It's awesome to see video games being depicted as great story telling tools in the media. I would have preferred Mass Effect or something with a truly great story, but numbers don't lie. Maybe we'll start to see some more excellent high production games with hollywood-grade voice actors.
- raustin, on 02/17/2009, -6/+14Love the GTA series and looking forward to future releases...
- xxacefirexx, on 02/17/2009, -1/+9Yeah Time's really known for their on point game reviews.
- praisethelard, on 02/17/2009, -0/+8First person shooters have evolved to the point that in a lot of them now you can see your feet!
- bigdoglj52, on 02/17/2009, -0/+7stop saying that or they'll make stuff cost 1600 points
- Rockkybox, on 02/17/2009, -4/+11What was so complelling about the GTA IV storyline? I found the story in every other 3d GTA much more interesting than niko's (Even GTA3)
- wolfing, on 02/18/2009, -0/+7I take it you haven't played many RPGs or adventure games. Unless you meant Half Life trumps anything else in the shooters department
- Legoman513, on 02/17/2009, -0/+7Not what I expected from Time
- Monotonousblob, on 02/18/2009, -0/+7Because Microsoft paid them to make the DLC, if Sony gave them a ton of money to work on the DLC as well, it probably wouldn't be exclusive.
- DJMattB241, on 02/18/2009, -0/+7Probably on the second page...
- Gizza, on 02/18/2009, -2/+8If you want to talk about story telling in games, the Half Life series clearly trumps anything else in that department.
That, or Psychonauts. - falcyn, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5In some ways, I agree. Niko really is an ***** who despite what he says seems to have no reservations about killing anyone as long as he's paid enough. I don't really feel much affection towards him as a character. On the other hand, the overall story of GTA4 is probably better.
- MonkeyNews, on 02/18/2009, -0/+5Honestly, the only person I cared about was Dwane. I feel really horrible whenever he wants to chill and I reject him.
- Volatile36, on 02/18/2009, -0/+4We can only hope.
- swmbuk, on 03/30/2009, -2/+6downmod WTF?
- Vortex5, on 02/17/2009, -1/+5Yeah I was pleasantly surprised by the storyline of the latest GTA.
- Manberries, on 02/18/2009, -1/+5Heads up for the dick around mission 5.
- pcpimpster, on 02/17/2009, -0/+4That left me feeling empty. Where is the rest of the article?
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -10/+13What story is there? It takes the whole "American dream is *****" shtick from Arthur Miller, throws in re-enactments of famous Hollywood action scenes (i.e. the T2 motorbike chase in the LA canals), uses overly-abrasive anti-establishment satire that's about as mature as a Green Day song, and offers no middle way.
- frepnog, on 02/18/2009, -0/+3then why is GTA4 the first one that i have actually felt compelled to finish?
because it ***** ROCKS. - groo68, on 02/17/2009, -4/+7I wouldn't of minded if the story wasn't the only thing you could do.
- graduisic, on 02/18/2009, -1/+4wouldn't have*
- inactive, on 02/18/2009, -0/+3the acting and overall cinematics were awesome
story is on par but the general atmosphere from the entire game is quite astounding, imo - Tokenmac, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3Are you thinking of Vice City?
- FredFredrickson, on 02/18/2009, -1/+4Guess you should have gotten an Xbox.
- MattyDienhoff, on 02/18/2009, -1/+4Exhibit B: Deus Ex.
- GhettoOverlord, on 02/18/2009, -5/+8As a seventy-five-year-old who has played video games since the Roosevelt administration, I can safely say that Grand Theft Auto IV is the worst game I have ever played. First of all, Liberty City is not a real city, as the game's characters claim. Secondly, there is no way to escape from the dungeon without using the Bellic's Key. Last but not least, I do not appreciate the scene where Niko and the fembot kiss. All in all, Grand Theft Auto IV was the worst game I have ever played. After enjoying it for nearly 200 hours, I can say this with certainty.
P.S.: I am not a crackpot. - RebornInFlames, on 02/18/2009, -0/+3Yeah I thought it was a full 1600 as well
- CrazySpaniard, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3well if you meet the minimum reqs, then play it at ***** quality
your fault for being a cheapass -
