- badqat, on 05/01/2008, -2/+147EA buying Take Two = the end of GTA as a must have title...if anyone can screw up a franchise, it's EA.
- Zanarkand, on 05/01/2008, -0/+71EA presents GTA5....brought to you by Axe Body Spray, Sprite, and Red Bull. Sniper rifle, RPG, sports cars, 4x4 and tanks sold separately...
- OwdenBowden, on 05/01/2008, -0/+23EA is the KISS OF DEATH.
Basically with every EA game we become paying Beta testers for EA and at close to $70 a pop I can do without it. The best idea is for Take Two to do a reverse split on the shares and then buy back the rest (or as much as it can) on the outstanding. - 2gig, on 05/01/2008, -1/+24
From the article: "So that’s that, then? Electronic Arts will have to raise it’s offer?"
What has gone wrong with the world when the New York Friggin Times can't figure out the difference between its and it's? - plizard, on 05/01/2008, -3/+24if ea buys them out and makes gta - i'll never buy it again
- whitespace37, on 05/01/2008, -1/+20EA sucks....
- sexybobo, on 05/01/2008, -0/+19But i Really want to play GTA2009 GTA2010 And GTA2011
Also does any one know real release numbers for GTA yet before release they were saying 9million copies on Tuesday and their analyst in the article were saying 5mill in 2 weeks - slicecom, on 05/01/2008, -0/+17I hate EA. They should concentrate on making their horrible games better instead of buying out company after company that makes good games, and destroying them.
- altinnovation, on 05/01/2008, -3/+20Rockstar North's contract with EA expires in 2009. They have already expressed their interest to split from Take-Two as they believe they can make it on their own.

Sorry, meant to say TAKE-TWO instead of EA. - badqat, on 05/01/2008, -0/+13In game ads would suck. Nickel and dime play for "extra" (read standard) features would be the death knell.
- cdigioia, on 05/01/2008, -0/+12This isn't a witty one-liner, so I'll get dugg down, but to respond about the stock going up after the announcement.
When one large corporation buys another, they need to buy enough stock shares to have a controlling interest. To do that, they usually have to buy at above-market rates. The prices you see quoted in the paper/Yahoo finance/etc., are for small parts of a company. So say you can find one share of Company B for $10, but if you want to buy 500 shares of company B...it's gonna be hard, not everyone wants to sell @ $10, so you'll have to offer more, usually a lot more (think $16/share).
So, if EA wants to buy up all the shares (or just a controlling interest) in Rockstar, they're gonna have to pay much more than $17.01/share. So, people were right to pay more for the stock after the announcement. How much more they should pay is debatable, of course. - postalblowfish7, on 05/01/2008, -0/+12EA needs to ***** die. If they could completely ruin a company as quirky and brilliant as Maxis, they could definitely ***** up GTA.
Thanks a lot all you ***** meat heads who are suckered into buying Madden EVERY ***** YEAR. - wezman2, on 05/01/2008, -1/+13No (or very few) corporations (especially McDonalds) want to associated themselves with a game like that.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -2/+11The people buying the stock at this price are absolute idiots. The day before the EA offer was announced, the stock was trading at $17.01. What exactly has made the stock jump from $17.01 apart from the EA offer?
Absolutely nothing. It's at an artificial price point right now and if you are buying this stock then you are setting yourself up to lose a lot of money. - Modiga, on 05/01/2008, -0/+8Apostrophes aren't used with the word "it" to show possession because the word "its" is a possessive pronoun, so possession is shown without the need of an apostrophe. It's for this same reason why you wouldn't say "It was his' puppy."
- soundsofreason, on 05/01/2008, -1/+8Come on Take Two! We have to do everything in our power so EA doesn't buy 'em out! ... even if it means just buying the game. I'm not buying a PS3 until June (MGS4 bundle), but I'm going to go out and buy GTAIV now anyways!
- AndrewDB, on 05/01/2008, -0/+7Why hasn't anyone taken EA to court over monopoly charges yet?!
- PixelD, on 05/01/2008, -0/+7EA won't end the series directly. Rockstar North has already said if EA takeover T2, they will no longer make the GTA series. At that point it will be handed off to one of EA's internal studios, which will screw it up so bad and milk it dry. After the 2nd or 3rd yearly "rehash/update" people will wake up and the series will fade away.
- cresswga, on 05/01/2008, -1/+7Anyone who knows how the market works knows that the stock price before the game was released reflected the anticipated sales. The people who bought stock before the release expecting a huge jump were just deluded.
The question will be whether or how much the stock price will drop now that the game has been released. EA might not have to raise their bid if the stock goes back below $20. - inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+6I'd be surprised if most people here know what a Zellers is. They're only in Canada, aren't they?
- sammydeath, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5yea it will just be a update every year, with slighty improved graphics and a new aiming system or something
plus all the ads will be real ads rammed in your face, not the clever piss takes rockstar comes up with, which are a part of the game - pk7677, on 05/01/2008, -2/+7After Crysis I really don't feel like buying any new EA games.
- Dasw00t, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5EA sucks no doubt about it, but can something good be said about them giving Spore the "Its done when its done" treatment? I don't know, If they can give Will Wright his space to do his own thing at his own pace, they can probably give the same to Rockstar.
When you stick to shoverware sequels you get COD 3 from nobodys, when you give proven developers time you get COD 4 from Infoward. - insanecee, on 05/01/2008, -1/+6Ending the GTA series i dont think would happen it has gone through at least one publisher and made it though several generations.... its a great series and buying them out and not using a powerhouse of a title... dumb and EA wont do that esp. if they were trying to be smart on overtaking take-two as we know it. Plus Manhunt which was a cool game the first time i would love to see on the 360 and i could see EA taking it there.
- postalblowfish7, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5yeah real ***** in the game would be awesome! how about real songs on the radio too! EA has an excellent reputation for only putting the finest pop music in their games. And why don't we get rid of in-game billboards and ads and replace them with ads for real products that target the core demographic of GTA players! Wouldn't that be wonderful? Obviously, selling the game on its own merits would not generate enough cash for EA, these steps could ensure that they make even more money and are able to swallow every game developer in existence!
/s - shelbygt33, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4I don't know that T2 has had any problems in their distribution, though.
- Nlewis4, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4If EA bought Take two, the next gta would be exactly the same, in the same map, same weapons, nothing different except for adding or removing a few characters for roster updates
- robthom, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4Aaaaaaaahhhhhhh! Make it stop!
- Chakat, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4Because they know that once EA has the company, edicts from on high will start coming. They'll no longer have the immense freedom they have in their current corporate arrangement. EA is just a horrible company.
- SwitchXFactor, on 05/01/2008, -2/+6"The thousands of video game players rushing out Tuesday to buy Grand Theft Auto IV were almost certainly heading back to their couches to get lost for hours"
hahahahhahahhahahahhahahah -- try MILLIONS, dumb ass. - ikonis, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4Maybe because they aren't a monopoly.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4If EA's games suck, what benefit is there in having them in every store in the world?
I'll take quality over quantity, personally. - TheSmiddy, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4--> the joke
-------------
--> you - EnderMB, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3If EA want to take over then Take Two/Rockstar should make them pay an obscene amount of money for it. Money that even EA couldn't raise.
Better yet, Rockstar should challenge EA and make a buyout claim for them. I would love to see the GTA money put forward to buy a controlling share in EA before the top bosses knew of it. If Rockstar don't have the finances get a few other developers to claim what franchises they want from EA and split the company apart again, bringing innovation back. - postalblowfish7, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3You're wrong. "Its" is the possessive. They wrote
"Electronic Arts will have to raise it is offer?"
That's why literate people have such a hard time reading things on the internets. - surKaz, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3Why doesn't Rockstar North want to make GTA if EA takes over T2. I understand the practices of EA suck.. but Rockstar North should have complete control over content and stuff for GTA..
EA knows that Rockstar North knows what it's doing.. Don't mess with that... - aznhomig, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3I await GTA: Street.
- Mullinsmcd, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2Considering the VGChartz preliminary numbers has GTA4 listed at selling 2.5 million copies in America on just day one(60% to 40% split X360/PS3), I'd say that Rockstar did the right thing in staying independent of EA until now. They now have enough leverage to do whatever they want.
- Enron1985, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2GTA is a gold mine, it doesn't surprise me that EA wants to get their darwinian hands on it. Rockstar has created the next gen engine for GTA4, released a game that lives up to if not exceeds expectations, all they have to do now is follow the GTA3 model; apply the GTA formula to new cities/time periods/cultures (ie: Miami in the 80s, California in the 90s) and sell the application of the formula as a stand alone title. Don't think of GTA4 as one game, i'm thinking of it as at least 3 games in this generation of consoles.
- altinnovation, on 05/01/2008, -2/+4Stupid Digg comment system cut off the links. Search it up on google then.
- justice7, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2simple, Rockstar shouldnt sell to EA, just make Vice City in the GTA4 engine -- and we'll all buy it again making them another half billion dollars in first day sales.
Now get on with it! - fokov, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2When a company is making money, people will still get something out of it. However, if you bet on TTWO before they released their results for the last quarter in 07 (christmax) then you would have make like 50% increase in your money (something like $16 to $26 per share). Day traders are leaving now, because they wanted the small gain (.4% increase in wealth isn't much, but it is better than nothing during a recession). However, I fully expect then to do well with this game, yet it might not pay off until next Feb. But then again, I'm just speculating here. This was the same as apple when they released their earnings for q4-q1, with 80k you would have made 20k (not bad for a week of investing).
- dafragsta, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2Not really. If you bought it six months before the game's release, there will still be Johnny Come-Lately day traders who don't even know Rockstar is part of a publicly traded company. Anytime anyone has success, it's going to have an impact before and after. There are those who know it's going to be successful and they'll make the most money, and then there are the bandwagon people who will come later.
I remember watching nVidia's stock before and after a new GeForce series would come out and the prices always went up in the month to follow. - inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2After the latest GTA, maybe Take Two can buy EA
- clickx, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Go take a political science class then look up Vivendi Games.
- richmomz, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Anyone who knows how the market works knows that investors change their minds as often as they change their socks. The current price is based upon EA's offer and projected sales of about 6 million units. If sales do not meet those expectations, the price will change accordingly. If they sell 12 million instead of the expected 6 EA's offer will look like a ripoff (which it is in my opinion).
- metzner, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1ea shouldnt buy gta
- cresswga, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1I was referring to the people who were on Digg the days before the game came out saying what a great buy it was. There was one guy who said he spent $10,000 on stock because it was massively under valued.
