- wolfing, on 06/25/2009, -9/+53Please stop it. It's like every new phone that comes out is 'the iPhone killer'. Who cares??? just release good phones and we'll buy them, regardless if they sell more or less than iPhones.
- theremixtrack, on 06/25/2009, -5/+37I do not think the iphone will be toppled anytime soon.
- Roamerick, on 06/25/2009, -24/+41Oh look, another 'iPhone Killer."
Yawn. - tonmil, on 06/25/2009, -3/+15The demo looked great and it runs Flash. So, now you really can access the Internet. It's great to see Apple get some competition.
- MacParrot, on 06/25/2009, -1/+12Apple was "late" to the market too. Seems to have worked out OK for them. There is no ONE phone that is going to satisfy everyone.
- thehyker, on 06/25/2009, -9/+19'Set to topple iPhone'? Really? Again? haha.
Let's see...iPhone twitter...check. iPhone facebook...check. iPhone Flickr...check...etc... - johndatserakis, on 06/25/2009, -2/+12Haha you don't have a G1. A brief look at your comment history reveals these statements:
"My T-Mobile iPhone runs flawlessly!"
"Android? LMAO!"
Now, I know all of you think I went a little to far in this post, but I just wanted to bring attention to the level of ridiculousness that apple fanbois will go to. I knew they would shamelessly defend apple at any cost, but lying on behalf of a company that could afford to charge you a lot less on their products is just too much. It's honestly sick.
Good day. - friday04, on 06/25/2009, -1/+9The "insert-name killer" is such a stupid concept anyway. iPhone is talked about, yes. But it's not the only phone and there are many phones and people choose many phones for many reasons.
Like the iPhone? Buy it. Don't like it? Don't buy it.
Seems so simple to me. - daridave, on 06/25/2009, -2/+10Irrelevant. As much as I love my iPhone for the apps, the truth is the #1 reason why it is great is because it's an iPod at the same time. Or in other words, the whole "everything I need in one gadget" is what makes the iPhone so cool. Music, Movies, GPS, Internet, Games and a ***** of other stuff that honestly falls in the "just to impress people around me" group, is what makes the phone great... and while nobody's better out there right now, it's still something that is very easy to beat. Hey, the gadget is great, but when you mention names like Google, RIM or even Motorola, you know good stuff is coming. The iPhone cannot be killed as a portable entertainment hub, because the iPod is untouchable, but as a phone I can see it happen. Hey, I mean, lots of people still prefer Blackberries... and their arguments are good.
- deslock, on 06/25/2009, -0/+7@iconmaster
Yeah, video, hulu, streaming media, trailers in flash, drag and drop interfaces in flash... none of that is the real internet for web designers.
For real web designers, Flash obviously is only used to create punch the monkey banners. - DanteDefiance, on 06/25/2009, -1/+7Sure it will!
...by the next iPhone :-/ - inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6Ummm.. wrong category?
- judahhertz, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6Nice, interested to see it.
- BullBearMS, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6If there was anything that was the kiss of death to an mp3 player, labeling it an iPod killer sure fit the bill.
If you want to dis the iPhone, then point out that this phone has a memory upgrade slot. There is something Apple would never include. - AaronPDX, on 06/25/2009, -1/+6You think I want to carry a netbook or laptop around with me? My iphone replaces laptop for casual browsing, as well as ipod and cell phone, on top of digital camera. That's a lot of space saved.
- slimasian, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5Granted the G1 doesn't have the best battery life, but yours didn't last the day? That's curious, I'm guessing you had GPS switched on all day with some apps actively updating? Or were you just a heavy user?
Just as a counterpoint, my G1 will give me a good day and a half before I need a recharge with moderate usage...then again, the latest firmware (Cupcake) is said to be much better with battery management than the earlier iterations, so... - jccalhoun, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5why is this in gaming news? why are people digging it if it is in the wrong category?
- Mavital, on 06/25/2009, -4/+9Okay look, I get it. Facebook, Twitter, *cringe* Myspace... people love them. But how many people legitimately check these social networking sites during the day on their phone?
I loathe the whole status thing in Facebook ("Hi! Look at me! I'm doing something mundane and boring the world should know about!"). How many people REALLY check their facebook from their phone? Is it that addicting?
Maybe I just don't get it. I only get on about 30 minutes every couple nights to keep in touch with old college buddies and post/view some pictures from the weekend. I guess I'm behind the times. - tonmil, on 06/25/2009, -1/+5You obviously can't read.
- Spyder2k, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4It's HTC's Hero, not Google's. Also I believe the social networking aspects of it were developed by HTC
- MacParrot, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4I happen to agree with you that the iPhone OS is pretty spectacular, but Apple was not the first with a touchscreen and to call the iPhone OS revolutionary is a bit of an overstatement. As much as many rag on RIM and Windows mobile, they were usable and for many worked very well.
- afidler, on 06/25/2009, -1/+5Push notification for iphone is coming/here. Rhetoric, much?
http://iphonetouch.blorge.com/2009/06/24/apple-app ...
There goes your argument... - MrNonchalant, on 06/25/2009, -3/+7Buried as inaccurate. This is explicitly not a "Google Experience" Android phone, and so the announcement and the social networking apps are solely HTC's. Granted, they did build Android, but it's like if I said Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, released the Ubuntu laptops sold by Dell. I expect better articles on Digg than this.
- afidler, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4megapixels do NOT dictate the quality of the camera. In fact, it has zero relevancy to the quality of the optics, the processing power for white balance and ISO, f/stop, etc. I guarantee you could not tell the difference between a 3MP photo and 5MP photo on a phone screen. And doubtful anyone is going to be making artsy prints of photos taken with their iphone, etc.
- Tyr7BE, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4For what it's worth, I haven't been to the facebook website in several months. I check it several times a day from my blackberry.
Smartphones are the new computers. - PRlME, on 06/25/2009, -1/+5it was quite staker'ish but good job.
- stuartjmoore, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4Facebook and Twitter are basically email for people you don't like enough to call/text/IM/email, so it's nice to be able to get messages and respond in real time.
- slimasian, on 06/25/2009, -1/+5MySpace is still around?
- jbella, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3If you are taking a picture with a camera phone, then you probably don't really care about quality. With a few exceptions, you would not see very much quality difference between 3MP and 5MP. In fact, in some low-light cases, the quality would be worse with a 5MP sensor.
- AaronPDX, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3At what point does claiming that some new phone is going to top the iPhone become hack journalism? Because that's what it is.
- thebeginning, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3If the UI/OS is good (which always seems to be the downfall of iPhone competitors), this could be quite good. It better have some more interesting tricks up its sleeve than that article showed, though.
If so, it better the hell be on Verizon in the states. - Dou6, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3I am a huge android fan, and even ditched my iphone for a G1 because I like android that much, and am super impressed since cupcake. But seriously, cut it out with the "iphone killer" garbage. The iphone is not going anywhere soon.
Question, what happened with all the "ipod" killers. Thats right, 99% of consumers still think ipod when they think mp3 player, and would never think to buy anything else, I think the iphone is even more entrenched than that.
That said, the overall user experience for the average person on the iphone is still way better than android, I am just not a typical consumer, much like most the people who post "iphone killer" here on digg. - inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2i'm going to have to bury you for the truth.
just kidding. :P - EtherGnat, on 06/25/2009, -1/+3Those are the two big advantages I've heard about the Hero--much better battery life and a faster processor. You may be in luck.
- icexe, on 06/25/2009, -3/+5To anyone planning on creating the next "iPhone Killer":
It's the UI stupid!!! - gkskillz, on 06/26/2009, -0/+2@WiseWeasel
Uh, T-Mo has the ability to deny (as in remove from the market) any app they don't want--not disable. In fact, you are allowed to download an .apk file from the internets and it will automatically install (as long as you have the 'Unknown Sources' option checked). - gkskillz, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Can you play Pandora and reply to a text using push notifications? If so, I'd like to see it.
- slimasian, on 06/26/2009, -0/+2Hmm I'm guessing you had a dud, mine works flawlessly throughout the day. Just for ***** and giggles, I did a practical test yesterday -- moderately heavy usage starting at 7:30 am and GPS/3G/WiFi turned on, I was still at about 35% battery at the end of the work day (around 6:30 pm).
You're right though that these smartphones (iPhone and Pre included) do not have the battery life from what you'd expect from a normal cellphone...then again, these "phones" do so much more than cellphones, now don't they?
In closing, I will say this...at least you can swap out the battery yourself with a Pre or a G1 :) - orbz, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2I wasn't the one to think this but I'll be the one to say it here:
Flash would out-do, for free, what more than half of the paid App Store apps currently offer for $.
Once the apps get serious, Apple could offer Flash without damaging their new profit line. - creamy, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2True that.
Besides, this should be an iPhone killer? This device looks like an iPhone rip-off itself. "Killing" a certain device with its own characteristics isn't really a good strategy imo. Come up with original, good and easy to use features. THEN, maybe, we're talking about a potential iPhone killer.
Until then, the iPhone certainly has set the bar waaay up high. - modsuperstar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2The concept of an iPhone killer is just so laughable. Apple is a well oiled marketing machine. When you see an iPhone ad it's about Apple, not about the carrier, they are an afterthought. Sprint, T Mobile, Verizon all market their "iPhone killer" handsets and half the commercial is about the network instead of the handset. HTC, Samsung, Nokia, RIM, none of them have the brand power that Apple wields. HTC could produce a phone that shoots lasers and does your taxes for you and it still wouldn't match the marketing muscle that Apple brings to the table. They are the kings of selling sizzle.
- Gibletoid, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1Ever tried to stand an iPhone on it's side?
It topples easily.
What they want is an iPhone killer, but that boat has already sailed. Same reason that whatever came after the Model T could never be a model T killer. Being first at something (iPhone opinions aside, bringing smartphones to the masses) - aceslick911, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1thats why i clicked on it...
- afidler, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Twitterific...Tweetdeck...the madness! There are so many!!!
- naveedx983, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Get rid of service contracts, Get rid of Exclusive provider contracts, and let the best phone win.
- thehyker, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's a capable phone...but superior? Don't think so...if it's going to 'topple' it's market share, etc, it needs to do something unique, some more than simply incorporating exisiting functions to 'save screen tapping'. Background apps...as of last week, yeah, they're here.
Also...appealing to such a niche market of 'power users' on social networks sites will probably work against it. That about sums it up... - awall1987, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1"The thing is, in Hero they are all integrated, run in the background"
What good is running apps in the background if you can only work with one app at a time?
I can't honestly think about a single instance where this would be useful... I know that sounds crazy, but if you can only work on one app at a time, what is the use in keeping multiple apps open?
Seems like it just drains your battery life and eats up system resources. I can open and close apps really fast on my iPhone, I can see how you might gain an advantage of speed, but how much?
On a device with a 3x4 inch screen, does running multiple apps really increase productivity a relevant amount? Sorry, but IMO it is one of those instances where it is good to know you can, but really doesn't matter - Dragular, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1I check my myspace, fb, and twitter while I'm on lunch or smoke breaks at work, but they load perfectly fine within a mobile browser. I don't need a phone built around them.
- mbst2000, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Oh come on BullBear, that's just nonsense.
Look, you can argue about whether you need expandable memory on iPods/iPhones, that's fine. Personally owning a 32GB iPhone fills all my needs quite nicely, and I would suspect a vast majority of the market would struggle to fill that too.
As for expanding Macs, you can change the Hard Drives, update the memory, so you can't take the graphics card out, it's not that big of a deal. Apple is not marketing to the crowd that want to fiddle around and take everything apart, it goes against their entire business model. If you want to expand get a MacPro, I use one for work, because I need that kind of horsepower, if it was just for casual home use I wouldn't need to bother upgrading a thing.
It's just the way the company does business and it seems to suit a lot of people who really have no complaint with it. Not everyone wants to pull their machines apart, there's a big chunk of the market who just want to switch the damn thing on and get to work/play, Apple is catering to those folks, not you. There are plenty of other manufacturers to choose from. - BullBearMS, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1That is just truth. My first Mac was a 512k Fat Mac so it's not that I don't like Macintoshes. The problem is that Apple refuses to allow user expandability so that it can push users to it's most expensive hardware versions.
At least with hackintoshes, users can have an inexpensive yet expandable Macintosh. Finally. -
