- kabitoSDMF, on 06/04/2008, -24/+118I can understand Sony wanting to keep up sales of the PS2, but by removing backwards compatibility actually makes me NOT want to buy a PS3.
- darkened, on 06/04/2008, -8/+60They removed the backwards compatibility to make it cheaper to produce the PS3 allowing price cuts but I agree this has leaned heavily into me not purchasing a PS3. I finally have decided I will deal with it and bite the bullet to buy a MGS4 bundle since it includes the 80GB version and the dual shock 3 instead of being stuck with a crippled sixaxis.
- tibbon, on 06/05/2008, -5/+50I've been trying to figure out WTF all of the vendors are up to. What ever happened to well made, consistently distributed consoles?
-Microsoft dropped the ball with poor motherboard/cooling layout and design, and a very loud DVD drive/fan. Oh and the Red Rings of Death issue. Product testing? Hello? Almost all NESes still work, yet in 10 years I'm guessing it will be hard to find a working 360
-Sony can't figure out the specs of their systems that they want to sell. 20, 40, 60, 80gb? 1 HDMI port or 2 (as was initially promised)? Card slot? No card slot? Backwards compatible? Kinda backwards compatible? Not at all backwards compatible? Figure out your features Sony! I'm thinking soon they will have a version that is so cut back that it is basically just a Playstation 2.
-Nintendo seems to have problems keeping the things on the shelf after almost two years. Either that's really poor management, or really back manufacturing. Also, having massive problems FINALLY getting a handful of decent titles. 90% of the titles suck. Why put effort into making those? Make a new Earthbound! Make another Zelda! Make a Mega Man! - Nobiting, on 06/04/2008, -6/+48I still have my 60gb condole from launch, it has served me well. No complaints.
- darkbob87, on 06/05/2008, -18/+57Here's a thought: Buy a PS2 on eBay for 30 bucks and call it a day.
- TylerM, on 06/04/2008, -6/+36Who's the idiot of marketing at Sony? It's terrible to discontinue models one right after another.
- mnemy, on 06/04/2008, -10/+35Sales have been better I've heard. With MGS coming out, PS3 will probably get a larger lead. Then later, FF will seal the deal.
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -2/+25i thought that was the wii?
seriously those friends codes on the wii are the single most irritating method of assigning usernames online ever conceived - WhereAmI, on 06/04/2008, -10/+3080GB model has BC.
40GB doesn't.
Solution: Buy the 80GB. - Nudar, on 06/04/2008, -7/+26It's software BC and hence has a large incompatibility list unlike the 60 gig PS3.
- Nudar, on 06/04/2008, -3/+19I specifically looked for a 60 gig PS3 even though they'd been discontinued and the 80 gig version was widespread. I wanted full backwards compatibility with my PS2 collection. I was able to find a pretty good deal on a used one on ebay.
- chudgoo, on 06/05/2008, -1/+17um, excuse me sir.
MGS4 is coming and people are replaying MGS2 and MGS3 to "prepare".
It's more important than you think. - ChinezePanda, on 06/05/2008, -3/+16I
- ThunderXcat, on 06/04/2008, -2/+15Since you obviously didn't read the article before commenting; it's about the difficulty of getting a replacement 60gb model if yours happens to break but is still covered through a warranty. Retailers cant just swap them out because they don't exist in that configuration anymore.
- jlee2081, on 06/04/2008, -19/+32so is PS3 now the preferred gamer console over the XBox 360?
- lime148, on 06/05/2008, -6/+18Now for a game of before and after.
"I guarantee you, you'll be stepping over Wiis and there won't be a PS3 in sight this christmas"
"Just wait until there's a price drop"
"Just wait until Lair, ***** looks awesome."
"What the ***** is Lair? Nobody gave a ***** about that game."
"Heavenly Sword is going to kick the ***** out of anything on any other console. It will be a completely unmatched cinematic experience unlike anything else ever made"
"So what? Nobody actually thought that Heavenly Sword was going to be good"
"Just wait until MGS4. It'll sell millions of PS3s" - Step1Mark, on 06/05/2008, -0/+11I never picked up a PS2 and I would love to play some of the hits with out picking up a ps2 for a few games that caught my attention that were not on the xbox or GC. I think that is why most hardware developers try to get BC to bring new comers to their brand.
- dmac41, on 06/05/2008, -4/+14Its actually about the same now, there were firmware updates that increased the number of games compatible with the software emulator.
- letitbleed62, on 06/04/2008, -4/+14Dugg for classic Wisconsin folk punk in the tittle.
- Haoie, on 06/05/2008, -0/+10Call it nostalgia if you will, but they just can't make games/consoles like they used to.
- ChinezePanda, on 06/05/2008, -0/+9wtf happened to my comment? it ***** itself it looks like.
- petebert, on 06/05/2008, -1/+10wow, you paid $300 for a wireless controller.
- mdaize, on 06/05/2008, -0/+9its not as large as made out to be
- Okari, on 06/05/2008, -5/+14Same can be said for the 360.
"Just wait for the Elite, it won't get the RRoD."
"Don't worry, the Falcon won't have the RRoD"
"The Jasper will definitely be reliable." - staticneuron, on 06/05/2008, -3/+12Really? So you can bring out you nes cartridges you already payed for and pop them in the wii? No? How about SNES? N64? I guess not. They are emulated and you have to pay for them all over again. That defeats the purpose of BC enabled systems.
All PS3 SKU's can play PS1 games and only the lowest PS3 SKU is left in the cold. The old 60 gig was 98% compatible while the 80 gig is supposedly above 91% now.
People whined about the price and so sony made a decision. Cant have your cake and eat it too. - Malarie, on 06/05/2008, -3/+11Do you have any friends with a non working PS3 console? I bet you dont. Now, I dont know about you, but ALL my fiends who bought a 360 are at their 2nd and 3rd console...
- JustinPM, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8Yeah, the original NES was pretty resilient, but damned if I don't miss the contact pin problems. The things where you'd be blowing in the cartridge and then jam it in there. That kinda stuff. Or the original Playstation working upside down, that was kinda bad engineering to be honest.
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8you both got pwned, i traded my wii for a 60gb + 9 games + 2 contr
- DirtyBurger, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8Hence why I said at the time, the time being nearly a year ago when a 60GB by itself was just over 600$. Had I bought it now, yes I would agree with you.
- gridbread, on 06/05/2008, -1/+9First time it ever really worked out in being an early adopter, I love my 60gb.
- KMartSheriff, on 06/05/2008, -7/+15[citation needed]
- mywhitenoise, on 06/05/2008, -2/+9walmart is offering a $100 gift card with the MGS 80GB bundle as well. It ends on the 15th.
- johnnliu, on 06/05/2008, -0/+7I found it interesting that everyone bash with one hand the game developers when all they do these days is milk their franchises and stifle new originality. And at the same time as gamers we reminiscent the good old days and asking for a sequel of an old game.
Whatever they do, it just can't seem to please everyone.
Personally, I think I don't mind sequels, as long as they don't suck. It's like giving my characters new life and watch them grow. - Arkz, on 06/05/2008, -1/+8i think the main issue is a lot of us have HDTV's now and normal consoles like the PS2 look kinda crap on em, if I'm gonna play a PS2 game i play it on my PS3 where it upscales the picture quite nicely, wireless pads is a bonus
- MrZop, on 06/05/2008, -4/+10I got a 40GB version because i don't care about backward compatibility. None of my PS2 games are legit (Sue Me!). The media slots are useless, more or less. Extra usb ports are nice, but i have a USB extension cord and a hub. makes things easier. and you can easily throw a larger drive in there. Unless you NEED Backwards compatibility, i don't see the need for buying the more expensive unit.
- statix, on 06/05/2008, -4/+10i jumped on the 60GB PS3 so i can get the emotion chip built in. i have not once utilized the backwards compatibility feature...
- Krystof82, on 06/05/2008, -2/+8Actually it worked well. The 60gb model came out at a time when PS3 was at it's worst. The 40gb was a huge success during xmas, and helped bring PS3 back into the console war race. People like choices, even the 360 is after having 4 or 5 different SKU's.
- EricDraven, on 06/05/2008, -0/+6"I'm thinking soon they will have a version that is so cut back that it is basically just a Playstation 2."
Dugg up for this statement alone... thanks for providing my laugh-for-the-day, man. - cnot3, on 06/05/2008, -5/+10Even the 40GB model is still the best value for a console in my mind. Blu-ray playback, media center capabilities, and likely the best longevity. I got one for $299 using a Sony credit card from Chase. I think the offer is still available.
- Jellyhead365, on 06/04/2008, -2/+7In the UK though, the BC was software based anyway I believe, so leaving it out wouldn't have made it any cheaper to produce. It was removed simply to increase the sales of PS3 games.
- PathmarkPolice, on 06/05/2008, -2/+7The 60gig model really runs like a dream too. I bought mine used for a steal (gamestop employee appreciation weekend, plus a trade-in of my ps2, with stupid gamestop card and old guitar hero games, I spent less than $225) and I play the crap out of it and I don't have a single problem. It sucks that the best version came out first.
- mCanada, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5No. Colecovision. However, some might say sales have "plateaued".
- dillibob, on 06/05/2008, -1/+6you know how digg is....
- Emachine, on 06/05/2008, -2/+7I still have my PS2 that I bought at launch, it's still works perfectly as if I bought it yesterday. It costed me a fortune, but I does have a "Made in Japan" label on it, so I suspect that's why it's still kicking. My friend got his PS2 after several price drops, and by that time they were Made in China, and he ended up repairing it several times over the 3 years he had it. I haven't seen new Sony Made in Japan products for a while now, and it's a real shame.
- benologist, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5Old games can usually be got very cheap too and a good old game you never played before is just as fun as a good new game.
- razrielle, on 06/05/2008, -0/+4yea and enjoy the massive library i built up for the past few years
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -0/+4Oh ya? I have /three/ PS3s.
- BitKid, on 06/05/2008, -0/+4I still play PSone games and PS2 games. If I'm going to shell out $500-600 for the Playstation 3, it makes no sense for them to be downgrading the gaming experience that the customer can get from it. I do understand that it probably costs more to include hardware compatibility for PS2 games as opposed to software emulation, however they need to make sure that whatever solution they go with works 100%.
- CedEx, on 06/04/2008, -10/+14What happened to your PS2? I still have mine. Besides, once you get a PS3, you'll rarely, if ever go back to play PS2 games.
