- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Agreed. When it's a blog with a link to a blog with a link to a blog, that's spam.
- jacobmp92, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Firmware upgrade anyone?
It was stated by Nintendo that DVD playback was disabled due to licensing costs. You could probably even buy the player for $20 in the Virtual Console store if Nintendo decides to release it. - Flimnit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31This is spam
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24And whoever uses that default style makes me sick.
- gk128, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22That was released by Panasonic. It was called the Q.
As for an "enhanced" Wii... if it's only DVD playback I can skip it. I'll stick with a launch unit. - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Nintendo news is a big part of "gaming news".
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I wish there was a filter so I didn't have to see idiots complaining about all the Wii stories. Why the hell do people even click on a link if it's something they're not interested in?
- ptsd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13it only cost 439$ and if you wanted to use the gameboyplayer, you had to buy one specially made for it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panasonic_Q - acff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9this submission is, what, 5th hand information?
considering the original link is at best, 2nd hand info. all this linking seems unnecessary and resembles spam. - pdiddle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Fox? Are you serious?!
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hey, its better than FoxNews
- Nydas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I really hope the PX decides to stock a few over here in Iraq. It would take forever to have it shipped over from the states, not to mention the $90 it would cost me to ship it.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=126273 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I still own my original Gameboy.
- jonbon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10As far as the re-release, I don't see how consumers don't benefit from a special edition/exclusive. Nintendo would be stupid to release a major hardware upgrade as it splits the market and complicates things for developers. In the past it's always been lighter and brighter with Nintendo. Personally I don't see why people are complaining that Nintendo creates new products that are superior to their pre-predecessors. It's not as if Nintendo is holding back JUST so they can create a "special edition." They release products that at the time are their best work and after time they improve them and re-release. Would you rather a company stick with an original design, when there's room for improvement? (yes I know there's the argument "it should be perfect and well thought out on release" but lets be real here what was cool or perfect yesterday isn't today.) I'm happy as a consumer that Nintendo puts work into improving their products.
In regards to the DVD player, Do we all really need another device that can play DVD's? I already have 3 in my room (xbox, DVD, ps2) and 6 in the house that can play dvd's, not to mention Wii is not outputting digital sound. Who wants to watch their dvd's in Dolby Pro Logic? Wii-motes don't have enough buttons to be a 'fully featured' dvd remote, forcing a media remote option and who wants ANOTHER dust collecting remote. Not to mention the lack of features such as up-converting etc that almost all consoles fail to offer. I'd rather save the cost of a DVD license, especially if the Wii isn't going to be outputting DD.
just my thoughts. - po43292, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8DD 5.1 support would be nice
- CrazyForSW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Get used to it.
- altosaxon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Isn't Fox news worse? [rhetorical]
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree. I can live without HD for now if I have to, but it's irritating that Nintendo can't at least include DD with optical audio-out.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This so-called "enhanced Wii" can probably be achieved in software. The GameCube was capable of playing standard DVDs with modchips and the removal of the frame, and Nintendo has shown that you will be able to purchase Opera in the future. Therefore, it's not completely unfounded to think that the addition of a CNN channel and DVD decryption/playback won't require an entirely new product (remember the Panasonic Q?).
- organon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@Megatog615
If your whole spectrum is between CNN and Fox news, then you really need better sensor equipment. - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You can always just not buy the new version. I still own my original Gameboy Advance.
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I am really hoping the News channel is going to be customizable. Am I the only one who doesn't want to get their news from CNN?
Plus, how about some RSS love? Perhaps direct from Opera subscribing? Thanks!
Well, if not, guess I'll just be using Google Reader in Opera. - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4A RSS aggregator would be ideal-especially with audio/video support. Since its always on standby podcasts could download over night and be virewed right on the TV beautifully...
Hopefully the support for indie developers (with the VC) will extend to channels, or other types of homebrew. - kelbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Fox is extreme right-wing, CNN is moderate with a slight lean to the right. Where's the left-wing news? On the internet... unless you count The Daily Show or Colbert Report.
- Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Then stop being a consumer whore. You really can survive with a "plain" version of products.
- po43292, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The digital audio hardware is not expensive. Look at the $40 DVD players at your local WalMart that have Coax and Optical digital output. It's just bitstream output instead of analog. And even the current PS2 at ~$130 has optical out.
It's sad they didn't use it in the Wii to begin with. - UberC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Are there any sources for this information or did they just pull it out of their ass? (Other blogs don't count as sources)
- sixtimes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I heard that the Playstation 3 is just Playstation 3.0. You know, to one significant digit.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The GameCube was capable of playing standard DVDs with modchips and the removal of the frame"
I don't believe that. The laser mechanism wouldn't be able to read all the surface of a DVD, even if you remove the frame, the laser would simply not physically move that far. - TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bury this under: "Dont wii on my parade!" Soon as I read the headline it turned my stomach for a second. If they made an HD Wii like 6 months after the first will, I will be really wii'ed off!!!
I'll take from the top notch Digg pool that this all a farse (crosses fingers). :) - TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Thats hardware and would drive up the price of the unit.
DD is expensive in most cases, and to be honest, if you want all that, X360 or PS3 (:?) might be the way to go. - Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I highly doubt they'll incorporate HD output. Games cannot support it because it would really piss off the early adopters.. and there will be tons of them if nintendo is going to meet it's expectations.
If anything, they might start selling some kind of upconvertor, but that's about it at least for the next couple of years in terms of HD.
As for DVD playback, well, I would think the hardware is fine, it just needs a firmware update... at least, that's what I hope it is. And if the case, I can see them asking $20 for that option to be turned on. it's a brillant move I think.. keep the cost down initially, get ppl hyped about it.. and for the people that really want to have dvd, they can cash in on them too. - b04155, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Just the fact that a better version is/may be already in the works pisses me off. I held out for a colored DS cause I didn't want the plain jane one, then felt screwed when the DS lite came out. Same with the PS2's better version. All that BS just makes me want to not care anymore about gaming.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PS3 and XBox 360 news are not really news, they're the same old PS2 and XBox stories rehashed in High Definition text :)
- kingace, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3How the hell is it "all new" if the original one isn't even out yet?
- marcan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Rarely do new console versions add features that you can't upgrade to unless you buy the new version. Especially for home consoles.
The PS2 never got much of a "better version". So they shrunk it down (and added Ethernet, which you likely already had in the original model if you cared about it), which is not impressive at all because half of the original PS2's size is the power supply and the expansion bay (which are no loger part of the slimline PS2 case), and half of what's left is mostly heatsinking and the tray-loading DVD drive (which got reduced and replaced with a top-loading drive respectively). The part that makes a PS2 a PS2 is a very thin motherboard, I'd say less than 10% of the volume of the original PS2 (or 20% of the slimline, for that matter). Oh, and they made the hardware quality even worse (burning pickup coils anyone?). (The original PS2 models had pretty decent parts quality, but the latest "old" model revisions and the first slimline ones sucked. Thankfully they managed to fix the worst issues in the latter slimlines.)
I really couldn't care less about a shrinkdown of a home console. What's the benefit? I'm sure you already have the space for it if you already have the larger version. The DS lite is another matter completely, as they improved greatly the screen brightness (which helped a lot), and reduced the size (which is much more important in a portable unit). Yes, it does suck a little if you got the old version, but it's not a big deal. I own a Lite, but I was in the same situation with the GBA and the GBASP. Sure, the SP had a better screen too and was smaller, but besides that, what's the real difference? (OK, I cheated a bit because I installed an Afterburner into my GBA, which gave me a lighted screen mostly equivalent to the first-gen GBASP screen. Proves that if there is any significant functionality to be gained by upgrading, third parties will come up with a solution that does not require doing so).
I really won't care if they release a "better" version of the Wii, as long as they define better as a change in aesthetics or size, and possible DVD playback (come on people, do you really need yet another device that can play DVDs? That would be #4 for me, in the same room: PS2, Xbox, PC, and Wii) - SouthernComfort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0**/cough**The United States (American) version of Wii WILL HAVE DVD SUPPORT **/endcough** Also any browsers/online apps have not been greenlit for the Wii...no online browsing (Nintendo is worried about possible Virii/spyware.) To connect to friends you'll need a certain code you gain by registering...no lobby areas like Xbox Live. Taken from a reliable source. Releases on the 19th...PS3 on the 17th.[reply]
- finalbroadcast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Although early adopters do usually get screwed Nintendo doesn't seem to be playing that fast and loose with their customers. While the DS has brought in some more outsiders, Nintendo has relied on it's 'core' base to sell their systems. Sega pretty much buried itself by upgrading itself to a new system every six months for two years, and you know how that ended. The big announcement is going to be the real specs of the system. There seems to be a lot of secrecy here. With all the play up on experiences they have to deliver on the systems real power. I don't think that it'll effect sales even if it is weaker, some people I know are going to pick on up and wait in line for the PS3.
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4If the base technologies will be dated, it is unfeasible to make it modular.
We all understand that you don't want to buy a new console every time it comes out.
But if you buy a Wii, and it's upgreadable for $350, and a new one costs $400,
What would you like to do?
It's also expansive to make it modular. Most users won't even utilise it. - Megatog615, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5No, it's just the other end of the spectrum.
- Megatog615, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3"CNN has signed up with Nintendo as the provider of news content on tne News Channel in American and Japan."
WTF!? I thought Nintendo was against biased things? - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -26/+15Remember the expansion pack and the 64dd for the N64? Nintendo experimented with this before and learned their lesson. Upgradeable hardware just cuts your user base into fractions, making software development much more complicated.
- ahirreddy, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3I hope Nintendo gets other news networks for the news channel. Fox for instance, or at least anything BUT CNN.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -25/+11I wish there was a topic for wii so I could uncheck it and still read gaming news.
- martinj88, on 10/12/2007, -21/+5Didn't they release a Gamecube with DVD playback about a year after launch
also woo for more Sega games on the Wii - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -23/+5That's probably the worst blog post I've ever read.
- slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -22/+1What magical Gamecube with DVD playback did you buy? You do remember that DVD's won't fit into a Gamecube without removing the case?
Edit:
Never Mind I am wrong. I remember that thing, it was a hideous Gamecube with a modified case. - Leo21k, on 10/12/2007, -29/+7I wish there was a way we could buy an upgrade for the current system so that we wouldn't have to go out and buy a whole new system later on..
