- daedal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Glad I pre-ordered. Gears of War is probably one of the only games I'm really waiting for this year.
- bjkrautk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Hype doesn't make a killer app -- gameplay does.
(Not saying the game won't be good...I'm not really a fan of shooters anymore....I'm just saying that it's virtually impossible to know a game will be a "killer app" until you actually play it.) - gtlogic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I'm not sure where you get your definition of application, but just to clue you in: a game is certainly an application.
- middleman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Translation please?
- McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Other than your grammar and spelling, you are spot on.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Agreed. What we do know at this point, however, is that it has great potential.
- G_Raph, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15in order for microsoft to suceed this xmas...it needs to be as good as halo 2. This is the game that is not suppose to sell games, but sell systems. This is the game that is makes everybody that still plays xbox 1 go get a 360.
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This game looks fantastic. Every time i see a new screenshot it makes me want to fill that empty shelf below my xbox. For me it hinges on the online component. make it as good or better than Halo 2 and i'm sold.
- FetalSage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Okay Monkey, how about you take a look at professional screenshots rather than taking screen caps from a video?
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2006/290/928234_20061018_screen001.jpg
"Poor texture detail for the almost completely static environments"
- Coming from someone who looks at screencaps taken from a video, that's rich.
"Absurdly short draw distances - with static images very close to the action attempting to cover up the fact."
- Yes, you've played the game. You know there are static images everywhere.
"The game still can't maintain a constant 30fps"
- I refer to my comment above. You haven't played it, so you know nothing.
"Can't handle realistic hair, cloth, skin"
- What game can?
"Comically amateur effects system."
- Uhm...what?
"Poor performance / tiny draw distance - leading to tiny constrained areas with low numbers of players for multiplayer"
- You really don't have to repeat yourself, we've heard your idiotic comment the first time.
"Obviously Gears of War was worked on by Epic's 'B team', ie. people who weren't talented enough to work on their main game UT."
- *sigh* I always try and convince myself that stupid people don't exist, though that's all gone when I read something like this. - belchbutter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I don't think you are changing to many peoples minds
- senseigmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There is Splinter Cell: Double Agent, and Rainbow Six Vegas; not combined.
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Duggmirror couldn't even save it...
- LuCiFer6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Hater in the House.....
- RiotActing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Monkey has taken a couple 3D graphics classes and thinks he's an expert on game producing. This game was designed for the 360 from the ground up and Microsoft put the extra RAM in the system with this game in mind. Microsoft also would not stand behind this game to sell their system if the "B Team" was on board for production. If you are going to hate back it up with some evidence. You have none... you do not know the poly count of the models... you do not know the frame rate of the game... you also DO NOT know the size of the final build's textures... not to mention most everyone here has NOT seen the final build. Go back to your own world where you are the Maya/Lightwave/C++ master and come back when you have something worth saying.
Who knows how this game is going to stack up... but I am sure the online play will be top notch. Epic knows what they are doing. - elrechazao, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Have you seen the game in person with someone playing the game on an HDTV?
I've seen the game played. You obviously haven't. But I'd rather take your word over my own eyes, and the dozens of reviews thus far and previews where people say this game has the best graphics on a console to date. Naw, I'll believe your analysis of a screenshot.
And you're obviously a sontendo fanboy judging by your idiotic comments. You can hate a game soley based on the system it comes out, but it doesn't mean you're not stupid. - opollis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't have an Xbox 360 yet, but this game's camera angles and view look by itself amazing. It is an awesome point of view to fight from. The graphics are probably better than anything else available now too. But, time and gameplay will determine this one.
- Madhatter73, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8From all the hands-on reviews that are out there, this game is a lot more than just hype.
It seems it's the real deal.
I guess we find out tomorrow.
Splinter Cell's out... Multiplayer owns as usual. Viva Pinata, Tony Hawk 8, Marvel Deadly Alliance and Rainbow 6 Vegas are coming out this month too... I'm going to be so broke... - Anoobis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'd hope that as its a cliffy b title so to speak, his experience with UT should give gears a great multi-player game.
- middleman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm
- McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Star Trek: Legacy is also out for the 360 this week. Bethesda seems to have not been advertising that title at all!
For me It think the priorities are Gears of War and Rainbow 6 Vegas. Viva Piñata is a christmas gift for my daughter, CoD3 can wait until next year. I'll either rent, or borrow my brother's copy of Star Trek Legacy, so I think I'm set. - friend18, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Oops, Rainbow six vegas. **slaps self**
- belchbutter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Those screenshots look pretty good to me.
- FetalSage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Looks like someone's a Sony fanboy. The screenshots you linked to looks great in my opinion, even for a screen cap from a video. It'll look even better when you actually played it.
I beg you, even if you own an Xbox360, don't get this game. I don't want to end up in the same room as you. - NidStyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I pre-ordered, and picked up an Xbox 360 just for this game. It better be worth it. I think it will nonetheless what others think. I personally love games that make you actually think about how to take an objective. Not just charge at it like some sort of super-human killing machine, even though that can be fun too. I just like shooters in general.
- elrechazao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you've seen actual ingame videos (not trailers, but people from ign playing MP for example) the graphics are incredible.
- ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You have demonstrated a complete lack of understanding of what a killer app is. For this to be a killer app, it needs to be a big mover of consoles pretty much in and of itself. Basically, think of Halo for the first xbox. For many gamers, it was pretty much the main reason to own the system at all. Halo 2 would probably not be considered a killer app for the Xbox, but it would certainly be considered one for Xbox Live since there were many people who bought subscriptions solely to play Halo 2 online.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@blapierre: It's an application. It's just a GAME application. Just like Word would be classified as productivity and Photoshop would be considered something along the lines of image manipulation... All types of applications need to be programmed, get your terminology straight.
Dictionary.com
Application - A computer program with a user interface. - friend18, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It's either Gears Of War or Splinter Cell Vegas I'm getting this year. Possibly both. Most likely Gears Of War. I think this game will be alot better than Halo for me, it's more teamwork oriented which I like and slower paced. I prefer strategic FPS like Socom over fragfests in Halo. Supposedly GOW is a middleground between Halo and Ghost Recon.
- OutLawSuit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4A killer app is just a game that'll make people go out and buy a particular system just to play that game. Also a console can certainly have more than one killer app like GTA3 and FFX for the PS2. Halo 2 would also not be considered a killer app for the 360 since its a 2 year old Xbox game. Halo 3 is most definitely a killer app for the 360 along with Gears of War though.
- agentbob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that defines killer app status.
- prosthetichead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4MonkeyLives you seem to have a little bit of an issue. Its just a game don't play it if you don't like it. Its not like when it comes out a large man will be holding you down and gluing a 360 controller in your hands and saying "PLAY NOW IF YOU WANT TO LIVE".
Just enjoy the games you like to play and let others in enjoy the games they like to play its really that simple. - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You might have some luck with somebody who doesn’t take preorders.
- daedal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3> i agree with g raph this game is going to sell more xbox's than halo > 2 even though halo 2 !OWNZZZ! i think this could be a huge hit.
I must agree with the afore-mentioned comment by user "G-Raph". Gears of War will undoubtably produce more voluminous sales of Xbox360 gaming consoles than the smash hit "Halo 2" did with the pre-dating "Xbox" console despite Halo 2's obvious alacrity in the past. - SofaKingJon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Called up Gamestop and Gamecrazy, both said that their preorder slots were not filled and i should be able to grab one off the shelf tomorrow. I'll see how that goes. Thanks for the input!
- Cthalupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Monkey, you're an idiot. Not because I'm a 360 fanboy - I probably won't even buy the game, largely because it would require me buying a 360. But I do know the Unreal engine, and Unreal 3 is a ***** beast. I've seen the scaled down version on PCs, and it looks amazing. I've seen the 360 version of the engine on an HDTV, and it was even better. The game runs at a very smooth framerate. The graphics are amazing. The particle effects system is amazing. The texture system is amazing.
You fail. - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Who actually pre-orderes games? I never once had a problem finding a game. I remember the day Halo 2 came out, walked into Best Buy at about 3 o clock and there were tons of them.
- Achi11es, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those screenshots look pretty good to me, Monkey.
- maskzilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ sofa
i talked to the guy at my walmart today and he told me i couldnt come in at midnight, but if i come in at 5am tomorrow, i can get a copy... might wanna look into it if you can jon! - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My EB told me my preorder should be in tomorrow, can’t wait. I usually wait for the first gamer feedback. I haven’t heard one negative comment about this game so I thought I would take the chance. Rainbow 6 Vegas demo is looking very good as well.
- SofaKingJon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't wait for this game. Stupidly i didn't think of preordering until yesterday when i was told i had to preorder at least a week in advance. Hopefully there will be enough for me to straight up walk in and grab one.
- LuCiFer6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmmm this is interesting. All the reviews I've read today gave the game an avg. score of 9.6. But more importantly they gave graphics 10.0, which I just don't understand. Because the lil monkey boy who I assume works for Sony or just a Sony Mascot claims that the graphics in this game sucks. So who do I believe, people who actually review games for a living or some lil monkey boy Sony mascot dude who hasn't even played the game yet? Tough tough decision I have to make.
- ant1832, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What about Call of Duty 3 (out today)...how did that not even make the list?!?
- middl3name, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@maskzilla
I think I can confirm this. I walked into my local Wal-Mart looking for a copy (along with 40 others) and I walked out empty-handed. - mxcl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some of us feel Halo is totally overrated. I'm totally hoping GoW takes Halo and spits it out.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Glad I found the "sober optimism" section of the thread. It's always so small!
- taforever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1your dam right about the space heater, i didnt have to use the heat in my apartment at all last winter thanks to the good old 360. Take that Wii and your stupid low heat emissions.
- Blackbow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2GoW is worth buying a 360 for, period.
- Hawkstra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This game is going to be hudge.
And just to let you all know most stores are getting the game at around 7pm TONIGHT!
Yeah the gamestops all around me in the bay area are getting them at 7pm tonight! They are going to the airports and picking them up, and their is NO street date so they can sell them when they get them!
I am getting mine tonight hahaha.
Curb stomp you guys later! - ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Regardless of whether or not Halo was overrated, there is no denying that it was the killer app for the xbox.
- BigLou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Monkey, how come you claim people who want the game are fanboys? Wouldn't you be considered one over them based on the fact that you are flipping out for no apparent reason? Besides, most (if not all) of your claims are ludicrous.
I'm only guessing that your strong negative response to 360 owners is based on the fact that you are a PS3 fan. Well, in that case you might not like hearing this: Gears of War is not possible on the PS3. This is due to RAM limitations/restrictions. This game really does take alot of power to run, and it's proven in the visuals.
Bad visuals? That's a joke. The screenshots you have provided are nothing more than screen captures of a non-HD, highly-compressed video of ingame action. Check out Fetal's post for a more accurate representation of the graphics.
Secondly, I don't have a clue as to how many FPS GoW runs, but I sure as hell know that anything more than 30 is rather redundant. My computer is capable of running F.E.A.R. at 60fps but I can't really notice a difference when I play on my laptop at 30fps. What I'm saying here is that your argument based on numbers really has no validity when it comes to how good a game is.
Oh, and you may call me a fanboy... I don't mind. I won't lose any sleep over it. For your information, I will be buying all 3 consoles and I have not been sold on GoW; I'm waiting to play before I buy. -
