- burkewendt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+77I'm 90% sure they will make this a bad movie. Movie studios simply do not know how to make good movies out of video games. They either completely disregard the story from the game, rely too heavily on it, or just bog us down with special effects. I love Gears of War and I hope I'm wrong... but this will probably stink
- DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -12/+47BRING IT ON SUCKA! THIS MY KINDA *****!
- deviouskoopa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38"The movie you've been waiting all year for...
GEARS OF WAR
Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Affleck, and Stephen Colbert" - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Oh man, I sure hope Uwe Boll is directing it...
- SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32THE COLE TRAIN IS AT HOME ON THE RAILS!
@burkewendt: Yeah, you're probably right. They messed up DOOM big time. - iheartartoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30What are you talking about?
Locust-->bad-->kill!
Thems my kinda plots. - readme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Dialog leaked!!!!!!
Bald Space Marine #1: "Eat ***** and DIE!" - kingace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Have you considered the possibility that you just suck?
- TekeeTakShak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Eh...Gears of War never had a flowing plot anyway...I don't see how they can make a good movie.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15If they get someone like Quentin Tarantino to direct the movie, I think it would be a hit. Hes a master at taking cheezy plots and turning them into great movies. Take Kill Bill, for instance:
-People try to kill a chick
-Chick gets pissed
-Chick kills everyone - daedalus779, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15wonder if they'll have anyone chainsaw glitching in it.
- jimbolla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Or.... maybe the movie can deliver the story that was omitted from the game. Sure the game sequels will expand on the story line but there is a lot of back story that could be filled in by a movie.
Show us why/how Marcus was imprisoned. Show us who this lady is Dom is looking for. With the right actors, the interraction between the 4 soldiers could be good enough to make this a kick-ass movie. The Marcus/Dom comraderie. The Marcus/Baird conflict. Marcus vs. Col. Hoffman. Cole being a crazy bad-ass. How about a Marcus/Anya love interest? Her introductory cutscence seemed to foreshadow that but then she seems to be forgotten about.
The announced screenwriter worked on Collateral and Derailed which were both pretty good movies with decent plots/dialog. Certainly better than every video game movie made to date. - DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Although Michael Clarke Duncan as Cole Train...
Maybe?
In any regard, I wish I could get behind this, but unfortunately New Line is in a tiff with Peter Jackson, who would be a great choice for this movie. With Weta at his back, he could really produce some scary locust. And the Berzerker (SP)? Oh man... That'd scare anyone... - sryb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9/me smacks head against desk
when will hollywood realize good video games don't make good movies - igibson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11the soundtrack better include Mad World!
- Guard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yeah... unfortunately I don't see a great game to movie transition... considering the story of the game wasn't exactly the deepest.
- mikeruiz7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'd rather see the Halo movie.
- NuclearStr1der, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Uwe Boll ALERT, Cancel the rights before he notices please!
- Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@burke
If they make the movie with visuals like 300, it may be cool.
"This is my CHAINSAW" - DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It's a great story as far as I'm concerned, and I wanted to play 2 as soon as the first cliffhanger ended.
You mean to tell me a movie like Snakes on a Plane can be made, but not Gears? - KuntaKinte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5picture gears of war with some crappy actor and a ***** plot, like DOOM
- VideoGameDigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Source Link
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117961472.html?categoryid=13&cs=1 - kelbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Forget Michael Clarke Duncan.
Just use the real Cole Train a.k.a "Terrible Tate" a.k.a Lester Speight.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lester_Speight - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7That might seem like a good plot for the people playing the game, but its not a good plot for paying to sit in a theatre for two hours watching somebody else killing Locusts, and thinking to yourself: "I could be home now playing this, and doing a better job at it."
It may get more fleshed out, as Stuart Beattie is apparently going to take on writing the script;
http://imdb.com/name/nm0064181 - curbcheck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Starring CliffyB as Marcus.
- Steek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As long as theres a big stereotypical black man in that movie its a success in my eyes.
- krellor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@xerus
yeah, but doom was bad. Really bad. I mean, not so much at the beginning, but when they went into first person mode in the movie, it hurt. I think it caused me physical pain to watch something that cheesy and lame come from practically my first action game on the PC. - mxpx5678, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow I just looked on IMDB and it says the voice of Fenix is done by John Di Maggio, and he also did the voice of Bender on Futurama.
- WolfDV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They must use Mad World by Gary Jules in the movie somewhere, I still love that GoW trailer
- drackett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3agreed. How this got picked up while Halo got "canceled" is beyond me. Maybe when Halo3 sells like nothing before, hollywood will reconsider.
- museo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Oh why? While a great game, Gears of War had a worse storyline than most games. But it will probably go the same way of Metal Gear and Halo movies: nowhere.
- weters, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My vote for Fenix. Batista. He's one bad ass that looks just like Fenix. Link: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d5/Dave_batista.jpg/200px-Dave_batista.jpg
- batmanjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you read all the back story for the game(of course none of this comes up IN game) it is really a very interesting story.
If they just take that and translate it to a movie, it COULD work. But like it's been said, they will screw it up. - Radan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@sultantravi:
Don't you ever mention that movie again! It never existed, it's just a myth or a bad dream or both. It's not humanly possible to take a game which is about space demons and turn it into a movie about an ancient virus which turns good people into terminators and bad people into rubber chickens. It's not possible. - Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He would love to, but only if he gets credited as director, screenwriter, music supervisor, and best boy as well.
- CanadianGeese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Gears is obviously a trilogy, so we don't know what the story will really evolve into. I'm hoping that the first Gears was the dull part of the story, though I assume the rest of the story will follow suit.
The real question is: When will the movie (if it's ever made) get released? Before the third Gears is released, right around the same time, or after? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^ignoramus
Hollywood didn't cancel, Microsoft did. Microsoft was asking for too much money. I doubt Halo 3 will sell "like no other" because halo2 sucked and halo2 was riding off the coat tail of Halo. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOTS of historical data says this will suck.
Sorry fanboys. - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why dont they just make this into a total CGI movie like Final Fantasy EXCEPT without the sucking part. that way the characters can look like they do, the voice overs can be from the original cast. The only thing they would have to concentrate on then would be a great script.
- xboxfiend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The rights went up for auction with a 21-page treatment by Beattie, best known for his script work on Collateral and Derailed."
Translated: It will be a long boring piece of *****.
Hollywood is out to ruin another great franchise. - Ohwiseone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Well i am happy but if the script sucks ass then i will be Pissed
EPIC better have a say in it - seansshack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The game is only an outline of a story, so depends on who they get to write and direct it.
- mavranos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry you got your ass kicked so bad that you had to come tell us all about it.
It's funny, I almost never get tagged, people on my team communicate most of the time and I enjoy the game.
Then again I almost never play ranked and when I run into asshats I leave the game and find a good one.
If you're gonna complain about something complain about the host advantage. - Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1one of the rules of writing.
Don't use foreign phrases in anything you write... it's a faux pas.
(That's obviously a joke.)
I don't think a movie using the same models/textures, or even a CGI movie (even if it were brand-new, impeccable models) would work well. People would watch the movie, and say "For this $7, I could've rented the game, for 7 days, seen all this, and STILL have gotten to kill the monsters myself." - Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the link, but anyone who has an Xbox 360 (as I'm sure anyone interested in the film of the game does) has the trailer already in stunning 720p.
The song is definitely fitting, but it would never work in the game... the game is a lot more fast-paced (and has far less story than that entire trailer) than the trailer would have you believe. - toastjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Monkey Island was a great game, and would probably make a decent movie, but it'd be tricky transforming an open ended adventure game with witty fight dynamics into a movie. Who wants to sit there for 30 minutes waiting for Guybrush to figure out what object needs to go where to solve some problem? Of course, it's open to interpretation how you present it, but that's the tricky part. Tricky all around.
Gears of war is more straightforward for translation to a movie and follows your general story arc however you play it, because there's only one path through the story. It follows your general narrative form introduction, buildup, climax, denouement.
What I don't get is why people bash GoW for having no story. The backstory is there, it just doesn't get in the way of the gameplay. Listen closely to the dialog and pay close attention to your surroundings. Most of it is there for a reason. They consistently mention characters you never even see, hint at events you haven't witnessed. It's not necessary for the gameplay but for me at least it added to the immersion of fighting for a real world. There's more than enough there to be drawn on for a movie's purposes. Yes, it doesn't have the convoluted *plot* of a FF game, but that's probably a good thing. It has enough of a plot to move the story along and be a vehicle for the action scenes without feeling too contrived. - trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It depends on what they focus on. If they focus all the money on special effects and violence I think it will be horrible. If they really get into the plight of the people on E Day and everything else that happens then it could be good. There are a few scenes I hope make it into the movie, the first being the spotlight scene, the first berserker, the movie absolutely has to open up with Mad World, and the rest of the movie has to have a killer soundtrack.
- SharinganBob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2PLEASE. No wrestlers. Ever.*
(see: The Rock) - Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is there some group out there that finds comments in articles, and replies simply to say they're the best comments ever, best replies ever, or wish you could digg them up more than once?
Dear christ, it was funny, but you don't have to give him your left nut. - SolInvictus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uwe Boll! Woo hoo!
