- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+54Why this really hurts? Bungie learned this lesson, never offer a hardcore gamer with no life a goal in a video game that gives them any fame. They cheat until they get it.
Case-in-point: Bungie removed the "leaderboards" from Bungie.net for this very reason. Fame corrupts the game. - GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30The fag that were putting his team at a disadvantage to help the other team (his clan) is here:
http://live.xbox.com/member/woozy+v2
Which he used as the account to "cheat" with (help his clan without people knowing) but his motto links to his real main account:
http://live.xbox.com/member/x+woozy+x
So yah, avoid him or leave negative feedback all you want. I don't want to play with a stupid ***** like that to ruin the game for me. - Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Let's see...
- CounterStrike (CAL matches - most are caught)
- Battlefield 2 (point farming & the likes - fixed)
- World of Warcraft (never played it, but I know they are people on there who mess around and screw things up for your normal gamer... Leroy, go eat your chicken!)
- Starcraft
- Warcraft series
- Command & Conquer: Generals (& Zero Hour)
Need I go on?
I just can't help but read this article and think: "Yeah, welcome to the online gaming world. This s*** happens... a lot".
Thing is, it is patchable. And you know a team at Epic is getting yelled at right now to fix these problems. - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Agreed. XBL is still great though if you have a core group of friends who you can rely on to provide a good experience.
- TheWedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Don't forget Diablo and all of the hacked items, that flat out ruined that game (although Blizzard learned their lesson for the most part).
- theturkish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18At least Bungie had a system, doesn't seem like much of one at all on GoW
- Twasi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15So you're saying you don't play any online game ever? Because this happens to every game. Even little flash webgames people cheat to fill up the leader board with their name. If this comes as a surprise to anyone then they haven't been gaming long. The game was just realized give it some time to work out the kinks. When the Wii is launched there will be rampant cheating, same goes for the PS3. Look at the metroid prime hunters for DS. People took the leader boards ransom and Nintendo pretty much said "We don't care". You have a couple choices. Either have a leader board and have cheaters, or have no leader boards. I for one would rather not have leader boards because that will reduce a good amount of people cheating, even if there are those left who do, the number will be greatly reduced.
- ScubaSteve2188, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10For me, ranked games on GoW just aren't that fun. For some reason, it takes me an average of 5 minutes to get into one, since for some reason i almost always "lose connection with host" and have to start over, and my points always get screwed up. The first 3 games of ranked i played, i did pretty well. (first game - 12 kills, 2 deaths, 300 points) but after it was over, i checked my leaderboard, and i had 0 points. I just figured it took a few minutes for them to upload everything, but after my second and third game, points were still 0. My fourth game, 150 points, and they showed up. Only the 150 from the fourth game. Since then, about 1 in 3 of my ranked games didnt give me any points, and i also met up with all kinds of *****, so i quit. Now i just play player matches, which are more fun, easier to get into (30 seconds instead of 5 minutes) and people who arent complete dumbasses.
- Aggaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I'm not surprised. I never restarted my XBL subscription after the first free month. People disconnecting from games they weren't winning, or team killers or general psychos who yelled at their own team, or people exploiting game glitches. I'm not paying for that crap.
World of Warcraft is the same. I don't PvP any more because I got sick of being farmed by guild teams. At least it is harder for that to happen in Alterac Valley, but Alterac Valley sucks and is full of people fishing and leeching honor.
This will continue on for the foreseeable future. Have you ever noticed how every competitive sport has a referee or umpire? Video game designers leave enforcement of the rules to the AI, and we know how broken video game AI is.
Until competitive PvP video games have human referees or umpires, they are always going to suck because of cheaters. It's not like all the cheaters are terrible people. Many of them are cheating in self defence against other cheaters, or are engaging in pre-emptive cheating.
Online games are much like an actualization of proposed Libertarian societies. Note to Libertarians: this is what your ideal society will look like.
The only alternatives are not to play, or play socially with friends where there are social sanctions to unsporting play. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17This is why I don't play on XBL. People with way too much time on their hands exploit these games so that they can feel superior to everybody else playing
- notbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Sounds like BF2142 to me
- Spooky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Thats why they need to get rid of rankings...I love Xbox Live and have a blast on it.
I played GoW for several hours yesterday. I didn't run into any cheaters and had a great time. Why? Because I just played with people from my friends list and their friends; no cheating, no *****...just good clean killing. - Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Thank you for posting this article. It essentially sums up everything I've been saying since Tuesday about the system. I also hate that nothing is secure about it.When I play a game online I'm generally hoping for a nice, quick match. This behavior of mine was brought on by Halo 2's matchmaking system. And to this day I can easily get a match in any gametype I want, at any time of the day.
On Saturday Morning, I woke up and had 30 minutes to spare. So I hop on GoW, and intend to play a nice match before work. In that 30 minute time period I tried to use the Quick match. About 10 games it gave me were full before they fully freshed up for me, another 2 had bad hosts, and then the two games I was able to join, one was going to be a "To 19" game, and the other had an error just when it was about to start. - mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It happens to every game to some extent, but this is an astounding amount for how long the game has been out and who produced it. I mean, hell, this is Epic, their biggest game series (Unreal Tournament) is expressly multiplayer, and Gears uses the same engine that UT2007 will. Epic should know how to handle cheating. It completely floors me that they didn't do better, and makes me worry about UT2007.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Same thing happens to me... You spend literally 10 minutes staring at "Refreshing", "Loading" or Network Error screens...
For what? To play for 3 mins, then do it all over again... :( - conwayblue, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I quit playing HALO 2 because every other match was screwed with by a point farmer.
- L0phtpDK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8[sarcasm]
BArGLE BARGLE BARGLE!!!
It's not the players fault, its Epics. [Bunch of facts not relevant to problem]!!
So in turn: Apples = Oranges
[/sarcasm] - victimofkratina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ban them all, let god sort it out.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Every online game should have a vote kick feature, period.
And any user who gets vote-kicked X number of times should be permanently banned.
Cheating lametards are destroying online gaming. I've given up playing these games entirely until developers take the issue seriously. I have better things to do with my time than waste it in games full of cheaters. - GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ Jaymoon and ScubaSteve2188 and whoever else may be interested:
I've noticed if you join a game right away after you refresh, especially the 1 out of 8 player games, you're able to join most of the time.
For me the "Unable to connect" errors happen when the game is actually filled, so I think the error message are wrong. Just think about it, have you ever seen a "Unable to join, game full" message? I haven't.
Give it a shot, I was having the same problem the first 1 or 2 hours i played. But since I've been doing the said technique, i've only been able to NOT connect maybe.. 5 out of 50 times.. - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5But you need to play ranked matches to unlock achievements :(
- floodyberry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What Blizzard learned with Diablo was that players love to cheat so much that they would re-buy the game to continue cheating if their CD-Keys got banned. Most of Blizzard's anti-cheat rhetoric and actions only serve to keep the inflation of the in-game economy manageable so that cheaters will return once banned.
- aeproberts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree with ReikiMaster
The easiest way to fix this is not play Ranked Games. Similar to the Digg ranking, people will cheat if they feel they can get ahead.
In the "player match" I have not experienced any of these issues. I played a few ranked matches and most of them were fine but I did run into a few idiots. In most cases, if I run into a "clan" I just exit before the game even starts. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Where did Epic go wrong? They didn't understand that people will find all kinds of ways to cheat on the internet. If you offer a prize, it'll get even worse.
Just don't bother. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I gave up on XBL a long time ago, with Halo 2. If it's not cheaters, it's obnoxious kids and ***** who still live with their moms and spend all day talking ***** on XBL. Years ago I enjoyed online gaming, but now these people have microphones and it's just not worth it.
It sucks, because when you manage to find a game full of well-adjusted human beings, multiplayer gaming is easily the best kind, and the games are still getting better and better. Unless something changes though, when I do buy an XBox 360 one of its most important features-- XBL-- just won't be of any use to me. - RedViper1999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I haven't played any actual ranked matches in GOW yet. I've only played about half and hour online so far. Makes me not want to play ranked.
- supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4they cheat, their reputation goes down just look at how many stars each player has, a zero star player usually gets kicked by me if im hosting.
Im supermanRED on Live! add me! - halosniper7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7i havent been on in 5 months but last time i noticed that if your 29 or over you really start getting hit with cheaters
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"...Who This Really Hurts:
The noobs. Not all of us are hardcore gamers who pre-order games months before they release and take days off from work to spend a good 12 hours not moving from the couch...."
That's what User Matches are for... People are actually helping out noobs, and telling them what each button does... Rather than trash talking and "waiting for a friend" before the match starts in Ranked Matches. - TeatherWind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Agreed Halo. it seems that most of the people that I play with, and they play well are in the mid twenties.. anything higher than that and it's simply just not fun.
- RavenBlade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I will say that point farming is a pathetic way to get onto the leaderboards. Of course, I didn't play much on e-day for this exact reason. While I'm really good at the game, I know what kind of people will make it to the top of the leaderboards. People who have no actual goals in life but to have their name on a ticker that sadly only reinforces the lamentable tactics used for getting them there in the first place.
Quite frankly, the only real show of skill in Gears of War would be team ladder battles which would be organized ahead of time. By judging the skill of a player by how many points he's attained only says two things. a) he's found a strategy to gain a massive amount of points in a game (which may or may not be a testament to his gaming ability as apposed to his "entrepreneurial moral flexibility" and b) he's repeated this tactic far too many times to eat, shower, or interact with those outside the realm of his headset.
But don't sweat. The "lucky" gamer that gets a bye to the GoW tournament in 2007 will get a sore lesson when those who earned their place utterly embarass him/her like they deserve to. Bonus points if the game mode is execution and they point farm that cheating bastards ass in front of the whole audience :P - ReikiMaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I noticed this problem in the ranked matches. So, I stopped playing the ranked matches and just went with player matches. You will occasionally run into a clan or two, but they aren't trying to actively sabotage your team at the same time. For the most part I have had fun playing online. I will either host my own matches or search for one. (the quick match returns to many errors...searching just lets you pick you game)
Or, just join a clan that likes to host their own tournaments and then you play with and against the people you know. That is always the most fun for me. - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, that makes sense, but it's kind of dumb, how you have to load the entire map, before you even join the game...
Of course, while you are loading the map, the game is filling up very quickly... :/ - TheThing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3However, you still can't ignore the fact that an exploitation problem is present despite the solidity of the game's mechanics.
- TheThing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The peer system that xbox live implemented has been exploited many times before. Even when halo 2 came out there were rampant problems with cheaters and network manipulators. This doesn't surprise me that it is happening. Like previously stated, server-side games would be much better. However, we must factor in the cost of implementing servers and ask will it raise the price?
- mavranos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You just need to find a good community. Like geezergamers.com or 2old2play.com
Older folks who play to have fun- not to act like asshats and cheat.
With a good friends list XBL is pretty damn fun. - richiestang78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whast sad is I have had ever one of those things happen, my advice if you see clan tags or people are really friendly with other peoep in there room like friends just leave the game, or piss them off and hide the entire game. People will always cheat on games and ruin it for people, how GOW is set up is stupid but thats the way it is. I was at 36 on Assination and a few hours later at 120 so I have given up even trying. Its like GRAW where its pointless to even try to get on the top of the leaderboards.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2just another online exploit, the guys who do it are douchebags and need to get a life i personaly accepted as cheaters as a force of nature and just avoid them i dont participate in online ranking i choose my friends locks others out
- capitapf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Does anyone else kindof feel ripped off by XBL. you pay a monthly fee for some computer to hook you up to another opponent. until microsoft hosts XBL games on their own servers there will always be a way to cheat (network manipulation).
- krewenki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tagging with a grenade isn't a bad way of playing by any means. The guy caught you, and killed you, fair and square. The article talks about people setting up unfair matches (4v3, etc), and not people who are simply better at the game :P
If the guy is tagging with grenades, all he is doing is finding you, running up behind/beside you, hitting you with a grenade, and running away. Same as a chainsaw kill, except you don't hear the grenades like you hear the chainsaw. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MS is looking for as much press as possible right now. My bet is MS pressured them into it (probably organized the whole thing).
- Fentekreel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Regardless of what game on what system that you play (counting the pc as a system too) you will never EVER in your lifetime my lifetime or your (children)^N 's childrens lifetime ever be able to rid the world of cheaters unless your going to have every player have a gun to their head that kills them in real life when they do. but hey thats a 200$ addon along with char and the case of beer .... heh..... though it is true you will allways have cheaters and slackers that just want to have the largest thing on the block to be able to have their measuering contest but if you dont like it get out. look at halo....rampent cheating after the xbox itself was hacked.....cant beat them there (blacklisting didnt help either) how about the standby/lag glitching just from the modem.....people are retards for glory and it will play just to "have it all"
I understand that you dont like gears of war because your lacking any friends to play it with....or friends to play it with you.... but its not all bad out there kiddo yeah you scraped your knees off some ***** that doesn't like to play by the rules.....set him as a non perffered player...get out of the "pro" arena or the "underground" cuz its only going to burn more......trust me man i quit playing games over ***** like this.... Though you'll never get away from it...and to blame the game is pretty much like blaming the microwave for blinking 12 in your grandmothers kitchen...its stupid....
oh and how many times have you ggame sharked a game or use that good ol' galoob thing for your older games ? i bet a few... cheating has been around for the people who suck and have the lacking ability to garner any skill to their merit...***** is what i've gotta say... ..|.. - Chealion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At least you've connected to a ranked game. I've connected to one once in two days, and it disconnected just as the second round was starting. There's something seriously buggy with the ranked matches.
- LuCiFer6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I honesly believe that events like this and all ranked games should be hosted on dedicated servers.
- graemee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I only really play BF2 online, but I've seen enough to say you just can't offer a ranked based system without a way to exploit. That's because most exploits are not game glitches but users using the game itself to achieve what they want. Sometimes it's as simple as one team having a guy on the other team to stealing the planes and landing them outside the play area or be commander and not do anything. Kick a player before the game ends so you can get a medal.
No company can afford the time or money needed to referee all the games. So they won't and the cheats will continue.
I don't look at leaderboards. These guys are not good, just have more time then the rest of us. - cart00n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Frankly, I couldn't care less about ranked games and leaderboards (does it show that I'm over 30?), they just show how good a person is at cheating in my opinion. As far as whether Epic screwed up by not making the system "cheat proof"? Shyeah! Right! People are ALWAYS gonna find a way to cheat a system - "loophole" would not be in the common vernacular if this wasn't true. Could Epic had done a better job? Probably, but cheaters would still find a way to exploit the system.
What I find inexcusable on Epic's part is the fact that we HAVE to play in the ranked game arena in order to gain all the achievements. This is just plain stupid - it is one thing to create an achievement to entice a player to join XBL, it is an entirely different thing to force them to expose themselves to the rampant corruption of ranking. Because of this, I doubt I will ever be able to get every achievement for this otherwise fantastic game... - ksinitro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is far to easy to cheat on games. All you need is to spend five minutes on the net and you will find the answer to any hack.. This is wrong i agree but even companies like bungie see nothing wrong. I mean they allow you to bridge in halo 2 pro tournaments, whats up with that.. It's not the cheats we should blame but the companies how run the servers. Again i pick on Bungie, why do they make it so easy for prople to find there ip, surley the can stop people from finding this information out, the reason i state this is because if prople didn't know there ip then then could not bridge host and we all would have a better gaming experience..

Either way, ranked on Halo 2 sucks unless you are playing with friends. That's why I only play the unranked, guest allowed modes. - mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After UT and UT2004, they absolutely did know that, which is why it's disappointing they didn't do better. My guess is it was rushed at the end.
