angry because he is right? And you wasted your money on a PS3??

Welcome to Digg! - autocrawler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Everyones gamerscore, online. Voicechat on every game, standard. There is no global pc mutliplayer that can compare.. oh wait.. MS's Live Anywhere."
Firstly, who cares about the gamescore? Virtual e-peen scores simply do not interest me. Secondly, you know, I'd rather turn off the voicechat when, say, I play Halo 2 online. The nonstop profanities typically heard on it are the main justification, nothing actually important to the gameplay ever gets said. Finally, name me a single X360 game that support 64 players on a server, or that has mods of it playable online.
Oh, and don't exaggerate the difficulty of using multiplayer on the PC: it works just about like Live: launch game, click "Multiplayer", play! Easy, isn't it? - goodoldharris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I like this Q&A from the interview:
Q: "The content guys must be happier if nothing is going to be stored on the hard drive?"
Gates: "That’s right, it means you can insert ads that are up to date. You can control how much ad skipping you allow. And you’re less vulnerable to getting at the bits. Xbox is a very protected environment. No one is going to go and get bits on an Xbox. If they want a DVD movie, the last place you would go and get it is an Xbox. By being more secure than anything else out there, it’s pretty good. It’s really just the simplicity. You have to get permissions to do server-based DVR. You have to get the copyright owner’s permission." - neko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9"We have this thing that nobody has ever seen before. Do not compare apples and oranges. 256mb on one machine is not the same as 512 on the other. Besides that. For the ps3 that is 256 mb dedicated gpu memory and 256mb dedicated ram. As for xbox that is 512 evenly distributed. It adds up to pretty much the same structure. But they can't be compared since the architecture is so different. The same goes that you can't compare the xbox 3 cores with the cells 7 cores. They just aren't comparable from these aspects. Where xbox has it strengths in certain locations the ps3 wins in others.
I believe that Gates is wrong to compare how the architecture of the ps3 is built up. The main thing about the ps3 is the cell processor and with it some remarkable stuff will happen that won't be possible on the xbox due to the nature of the core. And seeing them stuffing an Nvidia gpu in there only speaks for itself. A Nvidia GPU is hands down the best way to go and I believe the best possible solution if you don't wanna do all the GPU work from grounds up in a different way. But I'm not saying the xbox is bad machine I'm only saying that the processing power of the cell processor is better, that doesn't equal better games or such. It's just a damn good processor...:) - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Q: Do you think that with this generation of games, Sony is going to have anything that looks better than the Xbox 360’s Halo 3 for the PlayStation 3?
A: ..(i cut out a lot here where he talks about problems with PS3 hardware)..Things will get better on us and on them. We think they’re get better on us. That is so close. We claim we’re better. It doesn’t matter. It’s just like pointing at the Xbox 1. We were 20 percent better. But it didn’t matter. We were a year late, didn’t have the best games. We had this bigger box. We did have online. We didn’t switch positions on that."
As jarbled as that transcript is, I think Gates is right on this point. If you take the time to read the hardware reviews of the PS3, they all state that there are serious issues with it, and that its not significantly more powerful than the 360's hardware. If anything, the PS3 will only keep up with the 360, or you could see it visa versa (360 keeping up with PS3's graphics), just like last-gen. They'll both produce about teh same quality of graphics. What matters now is who gets the most games, and so far Microsoft is winning in that aspect. - chakl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@nreynolds
Are you smoking crack? Resistance online is a crappy ass version of Enemy Territory online, and when its full with 40 people, its just chaos. The graphics barely match up to Gears of War, The textures and models are bland, and the entire single-player can be beaten by using mellee attacks. face it, resistance is a sub par game that plays like Call of Duty 2 with aliens, and worse textures and models.
The Game sucks.
And without any sort of Cover mechanic, and an health system that been around since Wolfenstien 3d, the game play becomes to primitive in nature and stupid. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Either way, Microsoft and Bill Gates wins.
- starquake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Did anyone notice that in the mind of Bill Gates "cross-platform" only means: it runs on multiple Microsoft platforms?
- OwdenBowden, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Like it or not M$ Xbox Live is down right amazing and the forefront of what the future holds for all gaming. And you can't beat it for the price.
- PurpleSfinx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, Xbox 360 has great online.
I have a 360 and a Wii and honestly, I find the 360s online interface quick, informative and efficient, and the Wii's clunky, confusing, unstandardized (every screen works differently to the last one) and featureless. Most importantly however, wii currently has NO online play, and we all know how a system with online play patched in goes. (PS2 network adapter, anyone?)
Also that whole Wii code thing is so annoying.
P.S. I haven't touched a PS3 as they are not out in Australia. I don't know what it's like. - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7the 360 is a nice PC.
- clickmyface, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9So the number of XBOX online gamers amongst all XBOX online playable games is 10 million, and WoW for the PC has 8 million. So with just ONE game, the PC platform almost beats the XBOX.
No bill, it sounds like when people say hey lets play online they, like always, choose the PC. - Saiing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You're replying to me? Did you actually read my comment before you had your rant? I appreciate I'm not the funniest guy on dig, but have you ever heard of the phrase "tongue in cheek" ?
- mostman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have both Wii and a 360. Also - I am a Mac user - so my bias is usually against Microsoft.
The 360 has one of the most well thought out, easy to use, sexy interfaces you could possibly imagine. Everything works the way it should. Everything is in the right place. Everything is easy on the eyes. Then there are the small details - the achievement system, the ability to download files in the background, the ability to chat with friends while IN a game, the ability to play your own music while IN a game. etc etc.
The Wii is VERY fun. Wii Sports is an amazing achievement - so much fun it should be illegal. However, the interface is years behind the Xbox. And the online market place - please - don't even bring it up. With that said, the Wii is v1 and I'm sure Nintendo will be fleshing out the details going forward. I look forward to it.
Haven't even seen a PS3 - so Ill let someone else comment.
On a side note - if Microsoft would let the 360 guys design their OS - they might actually have something I would use on my Desktop.
-Mike - Codename, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In other news "Bill Gates combs his hair for once."
- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3PS3 does not have the equivalent of the 360s gamerscore. On the 360 it is required that every game released on disc have points totaling 1000, and every game on XBLA have points totaling 200. These points accumulate so that you gamerscore is an overall score. This score is tied to your account so that anyone you play against (or anyone who searches for your gamertag) can see your score.
The PS3 leaves it up to the developer to add this feature to the game and it isn't attached to a gamertag. This means that the score doesn't mean anything outside of any particular game that implements them.
I was indifferent to the gamerscore thing when I first heard about it, but it's actually a neat feature. I have so little time to play games now that I usually quit playing a game once I've beaten it. On the 360 I find myself replaying games with certain objectives in mind in order to earn more achievements. I can't stop playing Dead Rising until I earn all 1000 points. - Saiing, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Get an Xbox? Not an Xbox 360? Is he trying to sell leftover stock or something?
- autocrawler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"People want to play games on their giant TVs in their living rooms and the PC with its default mouse and keyboard setup isn't made for that."
A) You can connect any PC to a HDTV set.
B) You can connect a gamepad to your PC if you really want to.
C) The only reason why the PC is suffering as a platform right now is simply because consumers demand instant gratification without need for any effort on their part. Which is, frankly speaking, stupid. Personally, I'll take a PC over a console any day, regardless of the extra effort you need to put into PC gaming. - aazn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@alx242 and the "cell processor"
You have no ***** idea what you're saying, do you? Just because a console has a powerful processor doesn't mean it's graphics will be intense. Rendering, basically drawing the screen and showing the polygons that make up a character, object, level, etc, is all done on the Graphics Card. You can't render polygons on a processor, or if you do, it sucks up a lot of PC power with virtual calculations and fake floats.
"But I'm not saying the Xbox is bad machine I'm only saying that the processing power of the cell processor is better, that doesn't equal better games or such. It's just a damn good processor...:)"
You can have a 9.8 GhZ Overclocked Pentium 4 and if your graphics card sucks there's no much you can do.
"I'd take high resolution over large screen size any day. It helps big time when playing precise action games like shooters."
First of all, the resolution of Half-Life 2 was either 800x600 or 1024x768 or 1200x1024, so it's hardly "up there" in the resolution, and it did fine. And second, you realize that the higher your resolution, unless you have a huge screen it makes things SMALLER. Imagine trying to aim at someone's 3 millimeter head with a sniper rifle. Good ***** luck.
@Anyone saying that Xbox Live is *****
While yes, the screaming 9 year old pansies on Halo 2 are annoying. That's why there's a mute button. I am by far no fan boy of any console or company, but I have to wholeheartedly say that Xbox Live has been building up momentum since Day 1. And you can't say Geometry Wars doesn't own, because it does. If you say it doesn't, I'll know you've never played it.
I hate the Windows brand of evil and I hate that entire branch of Microsoft, but somewhere in the Gaming devision they know what they are doing.
@Everyone talking about how the Wii owns
I haven't played a Wii yet, so I can't say this myself. What I can say, however, is that you can only play the Wii if you have enough room to move around. What if you want to play in bed at 2 AM? Sorry, out of luck. What if you have little to no space to move around? Sorry, out of luck. Sure, you can attach the controller to the remote controller, making it a Gamecube-esque controller. But then you don't get the full experience. With the Xbox 360, I get the "full experience."
"On a side note - if Microsoft would let the 360 guys design their OS - they might actually have something I would use on my Desktop."
Perfect. I don't use Windows myself, I use Ubuntu 6.06 (Not 6.10, I want LTS!)
"nothing new here, no point in getting box if you already on a pc. and bill - fu!"
Your spelling and grammar is atrocious, as is your thought process - "Bill, ***** you!" is a horrible statement. Sure, we don't like Microsoft. I get that. What I don't get is that you're trying to be a conformist to this thread by hating Microsoft while giving no good reasons. Windows sucks ass because it's insecure to the average user and the advanced user as well, because they are stuck with a browser linked and tied to the Operating System, the ports are left open out-of-box, it comes preloaded with no software other than Pinball and Minesweeper, and while it's plus is games, that's it's only plus. Good programs are often having to be ported over from Linux or Macintosh to Windows. Take Apache, or GParted, or any other program that is either built into the OS or bundled with it. But even when OEMs bundle software with Microsoft, they still fail. Slow loading times, you often have to reboot when you install software. Why the hell do I have to reboot to install software? The "Add and Remove Programs" application / DLL is terrible. In Linux there are many package managers like Synaptec, which is my favorite. You can uninstall or -> install FREE - jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There is no denying MS Live is great. PS3 online is good for playing games, but they need a lot of work on the friends/messaging system. I do find it insulting that Microsoft does charge for Live, considering nobody else in the industry does. I can use Battle.net, Wii, PS3, PC all for free, I think the money they are making just on microtransactions should be enough to subsidize online play anyway.
@chakl Resistance is a great game. Single player is just okay, but the game really does shine online and has surprised many by how good it is. Deathmatch is chaotic no matter how many players are playing, the maps scale to the amount of players. If you don't want the frantic action of deathmatch try another mode like meltdown or capture the flag. - lacronicus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5with xfire i can do the same thing on the pc. without a subscription.
- rabidsquirrelOG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@People Saying 360 is a Loss Leader...
Duh... They have a recurring revenue model with Live!
They have people forking over $X.xx every couple of months in DROVES!
They are ultimately making money with 360 this way. PS3 profitability remains questionable... - Alcorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I want to play online, I'l just use my PC. No thanks microsoft, sony, or nintendo.
Note: This isn't to say console gaming isn't fun, but PC gaming is simply much better. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wanting instant gratification isn't stupid. People hate troubleshooting, and computers are complex. Although it is true that a game will look far, far better on PC than on a console, many people don't have the stomach to play with the in-game quality settings to find a good balance between framerate and graphical quality. I guess they feel this way sufficiently that they're willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a dedicated machine when they already have perfectly capable gaming PCs.
I sincerely hope Vista makes PC gaming more accessible for console gamers. PC games aren't in any danger of disappearing, but I feel sorry for console gamers who miss out on great games and superior graphics. - DreadPirateWes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with everything there but to nitpick the original Xbox's graphics were oh so much better than that grainy PS2 stuff.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Chances are Live Anywhere will be free on PC. PC gamers are used to free online play for things like BF1942 and Diablo and Counterstrike. At CES Bill Gates said (according to the PC Gamer podcast which is very reputable) that the PC is Microsoft's number one gaming platform, and Xbox is second. Microsoft is going to pamper the hell out of PC gamers in 2007.
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you think that then you've never played an online game on Xbox Live.
- alx242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@goodoldharris:
So it is more secure then anything else out there...well...hmm...MS and security hasn't always walked hand in hand. MS has however gone out of length with the abstraction layer on the 360. They don't even trust their developers enough to let them go beyond the hypervisor on that machine. But I see this as a drawback and once the system has been hacked people will get them a more open and fun machine. Right now the 360 is the most locked down console ever, I hate to say it but it seems like not much progress will be done either since mod-chips creators can't use the argument of letting homebrew be run it either since the XNA was released (which is silly a joke of a replacement for a homebrew developer). But people seems satisfied with how MS have done their setup of the interface so I guess most people don't care, I would never be happy about not running homebrew though. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd take high resolution over large screen size any day. It helps big time when playing precise action games like shooters. And have you ever tried playing an RTS or Simcity-style game on a console? The interface is beyond obnoxious. Plus, even though modern gamepads have oodles of buttons it's still a limiting factor - you cannot make an accurate flight or submarine simulation with so few buttons to play with unless you force players to run a gauntlet of a million menu screens. Plus, I hardly need to mention how unbearable loading times are on consoles.
Also, anyone who's played Oblivion on PC would retch if they saw the 360 version with no mods. The bugs, huge font, long loading times, simplistic graphics, aiming a bow, looking around accurately... what a nightmare.
PC is still the best gaming platform. Period. Console games are dumbed down to look good at low resolutions and control easily on simplistic monkey paw controllers. I'm about to sell my GameCube and most of my PS2 games because they're just too kiddy-friendly. If they had Katamari Damacy and Rez on PC I'd chuck my PS2 and never look back. - neko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Or even, it runs on multiple versions of Windows Vista.
- DreadPirateWes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're forgetting the original Xbox owners in your accusation that the 10 million number is innaccurate. Remember they've been doing this for two generations now...
- alx242, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is nothing new. For MS multiplatform has always meant different versions of Windows. They live in a weird little box that most people in the world is satisfied with...I'm not.
- radison2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll say this much. I absolutely hate Microsoft with a passion. That being said I recently traded in my psp, ps2 and every game and accessory I owned for an Xbox 360 and a few games.
They may be a ***** company but they have an awesome product in the 360 and the xbox live feature is simply awesome. If Sony wants to compete at all they really need a better online service. Not to mention they need a console that isn't so expensive considering it offers very little (at the moment) over their last offering. - DreadPirateWes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For half the price.
- DreadPirateWes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"anything Xbox live has Sony will steal."
With an entire year to observe and develop they would have already reproduced it if they were able to. Oh wait...Live has been around for way more than a year and they still haven't managed to come close to even the original XBL service. - xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually to be honest with you I doubt the 8 million subscribers are all active accounts. I think even if I don't play wow and stopped paying and playing over 6 months ago I still can log on to reactivate my account. So I think a lot of those accounts Blizzard is speaking about are dormant.
- Kavok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Eh, in another 2-3 years I guess you have to buy a new console. Time to upgrade again "Haha". I wonder how expensive the Xbox XP Vista 720 will be? Hmm..
Oh well, ill stick with my PC + DS. :D - clickmyface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah, great point, except I wonder if Microsoft was following the same logic with their numbers?
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just threw up. Alright, I'm sticking with the current 360. ***** IPTV
