- Neurocat, on 03/04/2008, -0/+380Gygax will be buried in a large underground mausoleum at the end of a hedge maze. Visitors are recommended to be at least fifth level and have a cleric in the party.
- wageslaven, on 03/04/2008, -5/+278I owe so many great memories to Gary's D&D. Thanks for everything Gary!
Gary has 0HP! Someone cast Cure Critical Wounds! - longtext, on 03/04/2008, -15/+276RIP Mr. Cygax, my basement would be quite different without you.
P.S., congrats to the submitter for using wikipedia and not some blogspam. You people could learn a lesson or two from this. - roddack, on 03/04/2008, -1/+232We all have to fail the Saving Throw Vs. Death some time
Gary will be missed but his legacy is the gaming world will never be forgotten - cogitocogito, on 03/04/2008, -1/+195I take off my wizard hat.
- giantnegro, on 03/04/2008, -0/+116The vicious beatings I received after touching my older brother's 1st edition D&D books taught me that Gary Gygax was a special guy.
- habu, on 03/04/2008, -0/+99Wizards of the Coast has modified the D&D home page. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/welcome
- inactive, on 03/04/2008, -1/+97I am very *rolls dice* sad about this.
- gcacho, on 03/04/2008, -2/+95This news is a +2 dagger to the heart.
- Dumbledorito, on 03/04/2008, -0/+88Dude had a rough life in some spots. I understand there was a falling out with Dave Arneson over how much credit went to Gygax for his part in D&D's creation, and after he left TSR, his former company sued just about every game project he started into oblivion.
As with a lot of industries that begin as hobbies, the pioneers find both fortune and treachery at the hands of those they work with... which is why you should keep an eye on the party's thief. - chigdon, on 03/04/2008, -2/+83Pour some mead for your homeboy
- Cenobite, on 03/04/2008, -0/+77Just leave the robe on, for god's sake.
- MisterMills, on 03/04/2008, -2/+73It's to late, he's reached -10.
- Eldorian, on 03/04/2008, -1/+68*****, who's gonna help Al Gore protect the space time continium now?
- MisterMills, on 03/04/2008, -5/+62God: "Gary roll a fort save."
Gary rolls.
God: "Sorry, Gary but that's a crit fail....." - parmethius2000, on 03/04/2008, -2/+52It's so sad to lose someone so incredibly influential to tabletop gaming. You will be missed, Mr Gygax. My condolences to those family members and close friends you've left behind.
- MaximusD, on 03/04/2008, -0/+49Somebody let Stephen Colbert know gently, someone with high ranks in diplomacy -- I expect a dedication on the show.
- Malovech, on 03/04/2008, -0/+46Very ***** news, I wouldn't be the massive geek I am today without him.
- Brian47126, on 03/04/2008, -1/+43Not that anyone will read 80 comments down, but, this makes me want to cry. I loved that game and how it brought all my geeky friends together every week. It taught me how to think creatively and how to think fast on my feet. Much of my life I owe to those silly games—hell; I even worked for an RPG company for a time. After 18 Gencon’s in a row I stopped this last year. This really feels like the deathbed of my childhood. Nothing but a long road ahead without the childish games that helped make me into the adult I am today…
I got to meet you many times Gary, and you will be missed. Your passing I think signals the passing of genre of games that will be forgotten on a shelf in place of an easier MMORPG.
See ya in that great game in the sky. - sharkd, on 03/04/2008, -0/+40A moment of silence in honor of a fallen Vice Presidential Action Ranger.
- archer75, on 03/04/2008, -2/+42I told my 4 year old daughter that the creator of Dungeons and Dragons died. She gave me a hug.
- Gregd, on 03/04/2008, -0/+39Now that I'm older and much richer than I was in high school, I've spent tons of money on ebay, buying some of the older D&D items. Anyone remember Eldritch Wizardry or Chainmail rules? Ahh...those were the days. Thanks for all the memories Gary!
- txtphile, on 03/04/2008, -0/+35I check for traps.
- Nick519, on 03/04/2008, -1/+33i propose a twenty magic missile salute.
- inactive, on 03/04/2008, -4/+36Looks to like he got to 0 hp, and failed his saving throw vs death.
- forkball, on 03/04/2008, -0/+31Little bit of childhood died along with Gary today!
- BabyTofu, on 03/04/2008, -0/+29Also confirmed on CNN via AP:

RIP - BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -1/+30I can't imagine any type of digger aside from the recent surge of soccer moms and dickless daddies (who are too busy digging the latest Pixar trailer) NOT having been affected by Gygax. All our favorites MMOs would be nonexistent without the D&D influence.
Gary Gygax is more influential in gaming than even Miyamoto. BOW YOUR HEADS. - leetninja, on 03/04/2008, -0/+28thats how he rolls ...
- beartrash, on 03/04/2008, -0/+27RIP Gary. I'll have to look for my B2 Keep on the Borderlands module later today and remember how much fun I had.
- BreathofCepheus, on 03/04/2008, -1/+27Quickly! Roll for a save!
Or attempt to resurrect as an undead.. - zaren, on 03/04/2008, -2/+27Confirmed by MSM report (Wisconsin ABC news affiliate):
http://www.wbay.com/global/story.asp?s=7963395 - Laughto, on 03/04/2008, -1/+26I was hoping Jack Chick would go first..
- Hraes, on 03/04/2008, -0/+24Oh, not cool. He was a good guy. I met him and his son Alex a few years back at a con. Alex, who must be about twenty-one or -two now, about the same age as me, seemed to be Gary's primary source for how to break the crap out of his systems. Born and raised powergamer, I guess.
Aw, not cool. He wasn't that old. - irinotecan, on 03/04/2008, -0/+24I believe that was in part because his ex-wife wrested control of TSR away from him during their nasty divorce. She is also responsible for the "dumbing down" of the 2nd edition of AD&D, pandering to the religious right by renaming Demons and Devils, among other things.
- ahnonamis, on 03/04/2008, -0/+23The saddest thing about this is that most gamers today have no clue who Gygax is, let alone what he did. Without him we wouldn't have RPGs like we do today, and we wouldn't have had nearly as much fun playing games growing up pre-Nintendo.
- WhereAmI, on 03/04/2008, -4/+26He was married twice and has 5 kids I believe I read.
- anonatron, on 03/04/2008, -2/+24Looks like he shouldn't have put all of those ranks into "Craft chicken wings" after all...
Mean joke, I know, but humor is the defense mechanism of real nerds. - canewediggit, on 03/04/2008, -0/+22confirmed by forbes; http://blogs.forbes.com/digitaldownload/ which incidentally is giving credit to the troll lord forum for scoop
- JigoroKano, on 03/04/2008, -0/+22Quick, we need a level 13 cleric!
- genconkeeper, on 03/04/2008, -1/+23Gary was the Co-creator, we have to give alittle love out there to Dave Arneson, but he also was the founder of Gen Con the largest Game convention in North American. I got to share a Gen Con History panel with him at Gen Con last year it was an honor. I have a copy of the 1979 Gen Con poster over my desk that he signed, that was my 1st year. It is one of my most treasured keepsakes. It you play a RPG, paper and pencil, on online, you have him and Dave to thank.
- LeeSoong, on 03/04/2008, -1/+20Gary Gygax can never die,
he has ascended to a higher plane. - strockrodan, on 03/04/2008, -0/+16It makes me sad to read this news. I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Gygax a few years, and can say he was one of the most genuinely nice and friendly people I have met. Although he is gone, his legacy will live on for a long time to come.
- ryllharu, on 03/04/2008, -0/+16I'm going to play tonight in his honor.
Thanks for everything Gary! - starfisch, on 03/04/2008, -0/+16Personal
"Gygax married Gail Carpenter on August 15, 1987, which was the same day as his parents' 50th anniversary. As of 2005, he was father to six children and grandfather to seven children. His first five children are from his first marriage to the former Mary Jo Gygax. His last was through his second marriage." - Asianwaste, on 03/04/2008, -0/+15My favorite quote regarding this is still "He'll be critically missed." Yours is great too.
- jpop, on 03/04/2008, -0/+15I cast magic missile!
- killerkabuki, on 03/04/2008, -0/+15His Temple of Elemental Evil has always been one of my favorites....as were many other creations of his....he will be missed
- Chakat, on 03/04/2008, -0/+15You notice the attractive drow ranger is really male.
