- swizzcheez, on 07/09/2008, -1/+30But will it be compatible with Wii? I'm too lazy to play Wii Tennis using my arms anymore...

- ChileanGoD, on 07/09/2008, -0/+16What happens when you get headshoted?
- slifty, on 07/09/2008, -1/+16If this actually works then there will be a lot more boobies showing up in my video games.
- beware001, on 07/09/2008, -0/+12looks crazy, i wish we had a video
- Mewchu11, on 07/09/2008, -1/+11Oh it's an EEG sensor, this isn't all that new. A few years ago I practiced with an EEG for biofeedback purposes. Instead of just watching some lines move across the screen, the data was linked to a version of pac-man where he only wakka-wakkaed when I was calm.
I know it sounds nuts but eventually I became a lot better at relaxing and I've lead a less stressful life since. I'm pretty sure this is the same tech here, so I don't really see how complicated it could get since the science behind it could only tell how active the scale was electrically, i.e. you only got one real variable to design around.
Doesn't make it any less cool though... - arigneysd, on 07/09/2008, -1/+9Video

- chrisinsocalif, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Stupid people don't get the full benefit from this headset, so would that entitle them for a discount?

- McBradd, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4At this years Game Developers Conference I had a chance to see this in real life- They had a demo where you'd lift an X-wing out of a pond by relaxing your mind.
Really, that's all this technology does, it senses how much activity is going on in your head. It's not at all responsive either. It takes maybe 10-15 seconds to relax your mind, or In another demo to burn things by exciting your mind, and it takes the game several seconds to register the change.
Cool, but not what they're billing it as. - Adonia, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4I hope it's not like that fake one that sensed eyebrow movement.
- inactive, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4Can't wait till something like this works with Maya or 3D studio Max.
- Mewchu11, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5the software is cheap, probably freeware. The hardware probably costs hundreds. I didn't actually own the electrodes or the computer it ran on, I used it at a shrink's place on a $20 a visit co-pay while he fine tuned the machine for an hour at a time. Point is I don't think this stuff is commercially viable yet.
That and the version I used had to use some sort of cream where the electrodes connected to increase sensitivity, which was pretty gross. - h4mx0r, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3The reason that being able to use your mind is such an advancement for gaming is because of split second reactions and decision making. No longer must you be restricted to how fast you can tell your fingers to move, but rather how fast you can logically come up with your next move. Next up, transferring emotions to the player, and then we have one helluva a war game.
- sap959, on 07/09/2008, -1/+4hasn't this been on digg before?
- thePhallex, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3looks like they need to fine-tune it so it actually responds...
- sap959, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3i don't it works like that... but it SHOULD!
that game would be sold out sooo fast - SEANWOOKIE, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Didn't they try this out with the 2600?
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Your thoughts betray you.
- Ascus, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3It was great until they said law enforcement wanted to use them. It one thing to hae a game pick up a stray though and doing something in a game, another having it go on your record.
- DamnMan, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2It could be programed to respond to your specific patterns. spend a few days training the machine and yourself that pattern X means shoot, Pattern Y means jump and Pattern Z means run. You could also use it to passively effect a game. Take for instance a game like Resident Evil, The more relaxed you are, the more accurate your aim. The more anxious you are the louder sounds seem and the faster you run at the expense of your accuracy. Imaging The Incredible hulk game that turns you back into Bruce and beats the crap out of you until you get frustrated enough to turn back into the hulk. Games that literally react to your emotional state. Its a truly awesome idea. But i doubt it will work that well, at least not right now. The real trick is the power to process EEG data into usable information for the games.
- pyro789x, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2My brother is doing the same thing, but his is for the chemicals your brain uses for concentration. He has ADHD and they're trying to get him off medication through this.
- DraxusD, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2I'm not sure what I'm replying to or where I am, but I'd like to fourth that.
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2A built-in piston is released and goes through your forehead.
- hollyminkowski, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2We are working on some brainwave equipment where I work.
The devices use very sensitive, low-noise op-amps as the detectors and microcontrollers to make sense of the data. The equipment is extremely sensitive, you have to filter out things like the 60 cycle AC wave that comes from the wiring in any building...along with other stuff. The device can pick up the hearts electrical activity all too well...that signal is enormous compared to brainwave levels. You can change the pattern of your brainwave activity just by closing your eyes...it makes it drop. If I completely zone myself out I can start getting theta waves...you are really out when you get theta :-)
The goo that you have to dab on the sensors is nasty in your hair though...yuk...brings to mind something else that is nasty to get in your hair. - xptoast, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2A different company or version yes...but this is progress so it is nice to see:)
- homercles337, on 07/09/2008, -2/+4I hate to tell you guys this, but this will not work as advertised. My phd is in neuroscience and all i can say is that it will not work.
- DiggedyDoo, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Let's not forget this, diggers:
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/gdc08-watch-emot ... - BestJaxx, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2You can tell me that it won't happen soon, and I will believe you, but you can not tell me that it is not possible for this kind of invention to ever exist. Today's technology is nothing compared to tomorrow's.
- DraxusD, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Yes it has, same company, same version. They only make one.
- Shaflugi, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Thanks!
- mywhitenoise, on 07/09/2008, -3/+5Yeah, this 110 degree weather in Sacramento isn't caused by global warming. Those hurricanes, tsunamis and other natural disasters that are becoming more and more frequent? Not global warming.
Idiot. - gotadobo90, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2This won't end up like the atari mindlink, Right?
- Ben1220, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2I don't get how EEG could tell the computer exactly what you wanted it to do, I thought it was only a general measure of brainwave activity...
So what, commands are based on the brainwaves you are producing? I bet falling asleep brings up easter eggs :P
except when you wake up they are gone :( - xptoast, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2I just enjoy technologies that can be plugged into many circumstances. It is exciting to find something with a simple concept that can be versatile.
- sodade, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2I went to some kids science exploration place in NH and they had a biofeedback game where two people were competing to see who could push a ball to the other's side. The more relaxed your brain was, the more "strength" the ball had.
I can't see how they could turn this into a viable control mechanism. - Ben1220, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1If that article was a joke/lie then why is this here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotiv - Ben1220, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1you don't believe in electroencephalography?? How could there possibly be inadequate proof to support electroenecephalography?
sure the first games probably won't be that good because its a new technology, but it should work. - Ledjar, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1this came out in the 80's already. they had like 3 for the atari.
- Ph03N1X418, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1A massive fatal stroke:p
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1It began in the 1980's when SEGA released the exact same ***** for the master system.
- endofleg, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1erm, what's your reasoning behind deciding I have a pathetic life? Because when I was a kid I thought hoverboards would be invented by now? Because I like Back To The Future?
Other than that, you don't know anything ABOUT my life, so stop being a stereotypical internet bitch and control your comments - Hutson, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1If we can control computers with our mind, it will make hacking a breeze.
- Pjmuellr, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1sounds like something Nintendo will try to get their hands on
- potisreallygood, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1i think you just had a nerdgasm. sticky...ew
- happytedium, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1This is OP. How lame would it be if you didn't even need to aim (talking FPS games). 100% lightning gun/railgun with no aimbot! :X
