- bossm4n, on 11/26/2007, -7/+164Dear Gamestop,
Stop opening games.
Regards,
Your pissed off former customers - Okari, on 11/26/2007, -0/+61Indeed. Toys R Us used to put out cards with the box art on them and you would exchange it for the game at the register.
- thebellmaster1x, on 11/26/2007, -4/+62Dear Gamestop,
Close your stores.
Regards,
thebellmaster1x - b33b3s, on 11/26/2007, -1/+45They once sold me pirated GBA games, but this was before I had enough sense in me to report them for it.
- BodomX, on 11/26/2007, -0/+39Along with not opening games, stop putting your ***** stickers all over them. There is this plaza by my house it has a game stop and a Best Buy and a Wal-Mart. I can just go to the other stores instead of your ***** stores so my game is factory sealed without your greasy ass employees fingers all over my discs.
- DamageInc, on 11/26/2007, -1/+35Who buys new games at Gamestop now anyways? Their prices aren't any better than other stores, and you don't have to put up with the *****. Infact, most other stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, and Toys R Us often offer a bonus for buying a newly released game from them (like the $25 gift card with Mario Galaxy two weeks ago at Toys R Us).
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -4/+34Buried for inaccurate description: "screwup". I swear GS does this ***** on purpose.

- Okari, on 11/26/2007, -0/+25Gamestop puts the real boxes out, Toys R Us just put out sheets of paper.
- CiDaemon, on 11/26/2007, -0/+22"Pretty insane screwup"....like your server?
http://duggmirror.com/gaming_news/Gamestop_Sells_C ... - Kajico, on 11/26/2007, -1/+20FTA "Who else hates that they try to sell opened games as new?"
Oh god yes, a few months ago i had purchased a DS and was out looking for a particular game which i couldn't find new or used anywhere. So I finally go into the GS inside a mall which i hadn't tried; and they have the game i want in one of those generic display boxes which they sometimes put up if they have no demo box available for a game.
It was in the New section of the DS games. It had one of those stickers you see on used game boxes, but it didn't say Used it said NEW, and the price for the game was the same as what other GS stores told me was the cost of the game new.
So i take it up to the counter and I already feeling suspicious ask: "You have a box here, for this game, but it says new, yet it looks like it's in a Used generic box. Do you guys have the game new, or are you trying to sell a used one as new?"
The guy looked at me a little bit red in the face and told me "Hold on i'll check", he goes over to the where they have the new games, doesn't find it, pulls open the drawer for the Used games, and pulls out one of those CD envelopes with the DS game inside (no case, just the cartridge).
It didn't take much for me to convince him to give me the used cost on the item. If it had been your average mother going out to buy a game for her kid, they would've sold that used game at the same cost as a new game.
GS scams it's customers so much that news worthy items should be stories about how GS actually did something good for you. Which I've yet to come across. - evodude, on 11/26/2007, -4/+21Gamestop Employee: Hey, do you wanna preorder this title?
Me: No, I just want this game here.
Gamestop Employee: Are you sure? It'll probably be hard to find when it comes out....
Me: No, just ring up that game right there. And I don't even have a PS3.
Gamestop Employee: Would you like to buy a PS3? We have some in stock.
Me; NO! Just give me the ***** game! What the hell, do you work on commission or something?
Gamestop Employee: No, no sorry.
Me: It's alright, just ring up the game. PLEASE.
Gamestop Employee: And would you like to join our frequent purchase club?
Me: Oh, for the love of Christ....
THAT *****. Anyone who's ever set foot in the shop has been through it. - dougbarrett, on 11/26/2007, -0/+13He didn't notice the fat sharpie mark on the disc to think "Maybe this isn't what I think it is..."
- hbusa2003, on 11/26/2007, -0/+13THEN WHY DID YOU BUY IT?
- jgtg32a, on 11/26/2007, -0/+11/sarcasm
- Holosoth, on 11/26/2007, -3/+13Not every copy of every game is opened. It would make sense that only the display copy if opened. I myself have gotten quite a few sealed games from Gamestop.
This seems like an obvious screw up that was bound to happen. Gamestop could improve, but in no way is it the worst place you've ever shopped at. - hiphoc, on 11/26/2007, -0/+10Went to gamestop way back when to buy Splinter Cell new. ***** game was ghetto shrinkwraped and the disc had a thumb print on it. I was heated when I took it back to the store. These people think they have the right to waste my time going back there for a new game. The game worked fine, it was just the principle of the lies.
- mushoo, on 11/26/2007, -0/+10"and then asked for an unopened copy."
You shouldn't have to ask. Just like you wouldn't ask for an unopened condom. - airwalkery2k, on 11/26/2007, -1/+8The funny thing is, he apparently bought it as a new copy. I'll bet anything somebody traded them the game with a demo disk and they just pulled that same disk out of their file cabinets and plopped it in there as a new purchase.
- DamageInc, on 11/26/2007, -3/+10I ignore them as if they don't exist as well.
- Affect, on 11/26/2007, -0/+7That is the point. You shouldn't have to return a game because some ***** up store deems it necessary to open the games before they sale them to the customer at the same price. I don't ever shop there because of this unnecessary BS. They should foot the bill for an obviously flawed business practice.
- grifmcrenolds, on 11/26/2007, -2/+9Was it Battletoads?
- DigitAl56K, on 11/26/2007, -0/+7You should have received *all* of your new games sealed.
They won't take a game back if it's unsealed, will they? - Klarth, on 11/26/2007, -0/+6There's a difference between a flashcart and a cheapo Chinese-made cartridge.
- Wazzuper1, on 11/26/2007, -0/+6While that is true, gamers like us should already know what we're getting. Who goes into a game shop and ask around for "what's good?" Nobody but grandmas and un-informed parents. For those of us who aren't informed, there are a ton of online review sites (metacritic) or you could even hit up your local library for a Game Informer/GamePro.
- MrFisty, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6Are you kidding? I've stopped going there after once getting a broken case and twice not getting the instruction manual.
Word to the wise: check your games before leaving the store.
Word to the wiser: shop at another store. - tamurlane6, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5Bought Viva Pinata bout a month ago from Game Stop. The package had all of the Microsoft seals seemingly intact. Got it home, opened it up, and found only the included demo disk. Called up the store and the clerk just said "Oh? Yeah, just stop in and we'll give you the disk." I'm glad that there was no argument but the issue shouldn't have happened in the first place.
- DigitAl56K, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5You wouldn't have to check it if they didn't open it.
- ThE0eNiGmA, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Me too. Was dumb enough to buy a "used" copy of Final Fantasy IV, even though the sticker looked....off. Put it in my DS, loaded it up, cursed my lack of Japanese reading comprehension while my best friend laughed at me. Took a close look at the sticker. You know how FF games have been going with white backgrounds and multicolored fonts? Yeah, not on this one. Hell, the "E for everyone" logo was missing a little symbol, reserved or trademarked, I forget which. Got my money back, fortunately, even though I had a slight problem in explaining the difference to the clerk. (Sorry if a bit messed up, I'm so tired I can barely read what I am typing)
- Okari, on 11/26/2007, -2/+6That's why. I don't mind Gamestop, I think their online store is better than Amazon. But, getting more than ten gutted games is ridiculous.
- ZombieKiss, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4LOL -- gamestop doesn't hire gamers to sell games it hires salesmen to sell subscriptions and reservations.
- blatzkowitz, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4A while back, I went to buy Mario Party 7. They had 1 copy, the display copy. Not only would they not reduce the price because it was opened, they wanted full price even though they couldnt find the box or the manual...
- sakuraz, on 11/26/2007, -2/+6How's that possible:S
- Wazzuper1, on 11/26/2007, -1/+4What exactly is wrong with them? I happen to LOVE shopping at those areas for these reasons:
1) They are closer (so this one will vary for other users and can be disregarded).
2) I can often get a game from Circuit City, Best Buy, or even Toys R' Us (yes, I know that the last one is pretty pathetic) on launch day WITHOUT having to pre-order them. Heck, I even picked up GTA: San Andreas a day earlier than when BB and GameStop was offering it.
3) Like Damagelnc mentioned, they often offer gift cards with the purchase of a game. I picked up Star Wars Battlefront 2 on its launch day with no problems and in addition, getting a $10 gift card from Circuit City. That's almost paying for a quarter of the game.
4) When I step into a GameStop, it is often filled with those annoying little kids that try to act like they're cool: "I just totally pwned this one guy in Halo 3 yesterday, hee-hee" or "Man, I just beat this game yesterday in like, 3 hours. It was so cool". Ugh. At least when you shop somewhere else, they don't bother you because...well...they don't know about the game—only knowing if its in stock or not. - GliTCH82, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3I suppose a gay ass-game is just as gay as a gay-ass game.
- Wazzuper1, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3So what does GameStop offer that is way better than other alternatives?
- meggani, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3it's the difference between gay like goatse, or gay like christopher lowell.
- GrievousV, on 11/26/2007, -1/+4*Sigh*
As a current Gamestop employee there are definitely some practices I don't agree with but in the end it mostly boils down to the store you shop at. As with many other stores, if you have good customer service that's about all you can really ask for. Yes, we screw up from time to time, and no, it isn't right. However, unfortunately it's going to happen at least once in awhile. I personally have seen a demo disc come in as a trade and once we caught it we just took the hit to our inventory (as we should). It was unfortunate, but hey... it happens. Sometimes those demo discs are pretty cleverly disguised as real, and sometimes when 10 customers come in with 10 games apiece to trade in, you just lose sight of what's happening and do your best to process it as fast as possible so you can help the parents with all the damn screaming kids knocking over your ***** constantly.
However, if you came to my store it wouldn't even be a question as to whether or not you go a refund and a handful of apologies because (at least at my store) we care a lot about our customers and as actual gamers ourselves (though we happen to be good at selling subs and reserves too) we actually want you to have a good game to play and don't knowingly sell you *****.
And the final word on those subscriptions-
They aren't for everyone, but for our regulars it can potentially save them an assload of money in the long run. For the holiday gamer, not worth it unless you just like Game Informer (which I personally do, but not everyone does...)
Reserves-
Despite how annoying it gets (I feel the same way when someone tries to sell me a rewards plan at my bank) if you know you're going to get the game when it comes out and its something that might end up being really popular. Just reserve it, we don't steal your money, it goes to the game itself. Since its release we STILL can't keep 360 bundles in for GH3. Those who reserved it, got it. As well as a few stragglers. But once they were gone we have nothing to give anyone, and we're less than a mile from a college campus. We get a crapload of shipments and still can't satisfy demand.
Anyhow... I know why some of the purists won't shop there, but for the rest of us sometimes it is the best deal. Retail prices are the same, but when you get an extra 30 percent on your trade in of 5 or more games plus the 10 percent from the card, sometimes it can make a real difference. If you are pissed about our policy on giving no more than half value for what you bought it for and then reselling it for 10 percent cheaper than used- go take a look at a college bookstore. Same practice, its the only way to make profit off of taking in used items and between all of the ***** that we still take in that we can't even resell.... a lot of people are getting the benefit of that. When you trade in to me a screwed up copy of some old game that you know won't go for anything anywhere else, at least you get a dollar towards something new. At that point it's like recycling the plastic.
All in all, our deals and "evil" practices aren't for everyone. You just have to pick and choose what benefits you the most. That's consumerism anywhere, not just at GS. Our screwups aren't okay, but using a little caution on the part of the buyer wouldn't hurt things either. There are definitely two sides to it, and when you evaluate both sides it comes out a little better. When you gang up on gamestop employees who are just as prone to mistakes as anyone else, you just look ignorant. But unfortunately you have the majority. So perhaps this will get buried anyways. Just food for thought. - SatansMagicHat, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2I work there too, and I'm not this big of a prick. You're the reason articles like this make the front page, you jerk.
- Okari, on 11/26/2007, -1/+3I can understand the price tag stickers, but there is no need to put a sticker between the opening. Even if you ask them not to put it on they say it's store policy. I think I just have ***** at my stores though.
- blahtastic, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2They seal up the display ones before giving them out so they can be returned. At least they should.
- iamafatguy, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2I reserved my copy for the Wii!
- ThE0eNiGmA, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2I only received one unsealed game from EBGames/Gamestop, and they didn't reseal it. Btw, I live in an area that curiously has both an EBGames and a Gamestop in the same mall, and another Gamestop down the street. Irrelevant? Yes. Weird too.
- xike, on 11/26/2007, -1/+3If I had a nickel every time a wordpress died...
- sakuraz, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2In Aus, they're still doing it:)
Pretty smart, I'd say - CiDaemon, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2Yeah--flawed because they put themselves over the customer, and then when something goes wrong it always hurts the customer, not them. Kapesh?
- Affect, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2I know you feel you're doing your part to make the experience better. Driven people like yourself make the world go round. Unfortunately you're employer probably doesn't appreciate your hard work or efforts. It would be nice if more people like yourself were running the company but they aren't.
- FoolsRun, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2It's tertiary to the actual article, since the article mentioned a new game, but scallon said "...if you buy a used game...", so your reply is apt in regard to the original post, but inapt in regard to the comment to which you replied.
- mushoo, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2They have three stores within less than a mile of each other near where I live.
