- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Umm, Halo2 isn't crossplatform, as in, you can't play each other like you can in Shadowrun and Uno.
Amusingly enough the Joystiq article gets it right while MrBabyMan wrote the horrible description (Though the joke about epic battles and Uno was amusing, good job there).
I hope G4WL (What an acroynm) isn't implemented in Vista as a per-game-basis, like I want to be able to have it running 24/7 without having to have Shadowrun, Halo2 or some other game running -- the reason I'm worried is because in the screenshots the G4WL GUI is in windows titled Halo2/Shadowrun. :x
Dugg. Can't wait for G4WL to come out, should be interesting to see what it does for PC gaming. - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Sorry to doublepost but I thought I'd let you know about an awesome feature of G4WL from watching the video:
You can log in to G4WL on your home PC, play say, Zuma (Their example) for a bit and than make a savegame, you can than go to another PC with G4WL, login and continue that savegame. It also allows you to save game preferences, the example they use is your Halo2 profile, like if it's inverted or whatnot -- quite awesome.
The 'problem' is is that this isn't required, so most games probably won't bother to do this till the whole 'Games for Windows' thing takes off huge, so for the first year it'll probably be only Microsoft games and their 'first party developer friends.' So, third-party will be big in 08 and probably a few reasonable ones by the end of the year.
Also, in the video the people in the interview also express their worries that G4WL is within the game, and not as a layer outside. - Hexxagonal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17actually they're charging $50 for the PC vs Xbox playing. The thing is though that anyone who would want to do that probably already is paying for the Live service, so I don't see why anyone would complain.
Multiplayer matchmaking is also not free.
PC vs PC is still free.
Multiplayer achievements are only for gold members because lets think about this you don't want people to create weird settings and boost to get their multiplayer achievements. Just take a look at Battlefield 2:MC for 360 for reasons enough for that. - Brereton55, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Sounds good to me I hate Xfire
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12They're charging $50 for a service which allows PC's and 360's to play with eachother. However, if you bought a Gold XBox Live account, you've got it for free...but it's only the Gold accounts.
- Scrappy1850, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13you are going to upgrade to vista anyway, you know you are. i bought it and it works great. XP was good, vista is better. not perfect, but better.
- ahatter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12G4WL will be optional and not mandatory for PC gaming or PC to PC multilayer.
as stated in comments above this is only for cross platform (PC to 360) gaming and if you are interested in that chances are you already have a XBL gold membership which means you have already paid for G4WL. - unununium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8$3000 for the machine and you think the $50 Live charge is what will kill the platform?
- dark1152, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7About damn time! This is the reason I have Vista in the first place!
- NoodleGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ilyag
"The whole thing is just a marketing ploy to sell Vista to gamers. If you look at it outside of that, you'll realize that the only reason we pay $50 a year for Xbox Live service is because we have NO CHOICE on the Xbox 360."
You're kidding right??? I have both PC and XBox and I have to say that XBox Live is better than any online gaming buddy system that I've seen on PC. Maybe I'm out of the loop here, but I don't think so.
Take Gears of War for example. I can be playing a Single player game, and if a friend signs onto XBox live, I can send him a message, and he will join in seamlessly changing my single player game into a Co-Op game. I have seen nothing like this on PC. Sure there is XFire, but that doesnt have the same seamless integration supported by the game itself. - dkm201, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Your sarcasm is slightly confusing, since Halo 1 was awesome with mouse/kb.
It's so much better that it wouldn't be fair to play cross-platform, since PC players (1) have much more control than a console player, and (2) have MUCH more depth of field during play due to the higher resolution. - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9are you John Carmack or something?
John,
let it go. you've lost touch with the gaming community and your game engines, while great havent produced any great games themselves in a while. - Lennalf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I've never "wondered" about which input device is best, nor should any other serious FPS gamer. Keyboard and mouse is CLEARLY superior. You can turn 360 degrees in a *fraction* of an instant, and you have complete control over sensitivity. Plus, you have much more control with your entire hand on a flat surface than with your thumbs on a rotating stick. I mean, come on, there is NO comparison for FPS gaming. Dual analog is great for other game types (Geometry wars comes to mind), but when it comes to FPS gaming the clear and obvious winner is keyboard/mouse.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Microsoft's Peter Moore:
"The future is about PC games and Vista is at the vanguard of that." - TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If only all accountants were that cheap
- ahatter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ NeoCortex
the only games that will be live enabled will be games with the "Games for Windows" logo.
therefore those will be the only ones with achievements and im sure they will go through the same process 360 games do. - KingAdrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I hope G4WL (What an acroynm) isn't implemented in Vista as a per-game-basis"
Hopefully they use Windows Live Messenger for that - roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If you need an example of why you pay $50 for xbox live, look at playstations pitiful attempts.
Or pc gaming as it is now. In one game, go ahead and invite someone to play with you from in the game. Or send them a message while they are in that game. Or, send them a video message...oh, wait, you cant. You know why? Because there is no centralized servers dedicated for that, no support backbone, no standards set...these are the things you pay for. You think that all the traffic that XBL generates runs on fairy dust, there is a very extensive server setup on their end that handles all of that, and those server cost money! - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3from the screenshots it's looks like a standalone program that runs in the background. You can check messages and who's online and I guess it kicks in when you put a game in.
- supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dude, your a PC gamer. Get used to it. Go buy a new motherboard at a good PC shop (not a futureshop, bestbuy etc) and you can get VISTA ULTIMATE 64 BIT for like 150 bucks.
Thats nothing compared to the 300 for new motherboard, 300 for good ram, 900 for a good video card etc etc etc...
Me, I've switched to gaming on the xbox 360 and Im quite happy. Im actually about to go play a new game right now. It will take me 1 minute to unwrap the dvd, and 2 minutes later I will be playing the game online. No install, no driver patches, no troubleshooting, no setting my video... no launching xfire to find people to play, no video cards to buy, etc etc etc
But if you want to be on the bleeding edge of PC games as I have always been then the price of a vista upgrade is the price of being a PC gamer. Get used to it. Or go out and buy an XBOX 360. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Oh no, PC and Xbox CP. If the PC gamers with their Mouse and Keyboard come, I'm gonna cancel my Xbox Live. There is no ***** way a Controller vs Mouse and Keyboard is a good idea...
- thrallie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Don't worry, there will be a crack allowing XP to run vista only games.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Only complete noobs think a gamepad can even remotely complete with mouse and keyboard. I play both, alot, and I know M&K is infinitely more accurate than a gamepad. That doesn't decrease my love for the games but I don't sit here and kid myself that a gamepad can even keep up with the M&K.
- emperor799, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even the New york Times is covering this one: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/14/technology/14game.html
- EvilFerret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It makes me wonder how many games are going to actually have achievement points.... I'm guessing people will create trainers with the purpose of getting all 1000 points on Halo in a matter of minutes. Piracy also comes into question..... It's probably going to be a lot like Steam where gamers have to be signed in/validated before they can play a game. Of course that won't stop the games from being pirated, but it would stop pirated games from being eligible to get achievement points and such.
- lacronicus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the wii controller is already supported by a number of programs that allow it to be used in other games, and a hl2 mod is in the works specifically designed for the wii controller. it actually works quite well. i would not be surprised if in the near future the software is mature enough to control the mouse functions in game. in fact, if you look around a bit, you might find one. theyre rather popular, but you need bluetooth, as that is what the controller uses.
- supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dude, 4 bucks a month is a big deal for you? Xbox live is the BEST gaming community / matchmaking service in the world. And I know, Ive tried them all and been gaming since the late 70s brother. Its worth 4 bucks a month. If you want ***** game matchmaking without a real community / friend feel then just install xfire for PC or buy a Peice of ***** 3 . Those two are free, and you can struggle for hours trying to play online.
Otherwise, shut up and pay the 4 bucks a month. I spend more than that on condoms, or coffee hell I spend more than that on wishing wells. lol - Jwzupancic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree. I play well with FPS on the PC, but when I migrate to a console I suck.
- mr804, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You can do it in crack down also.
- Levarris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So does this mean that Direct X 10 will come out May 8th also?
- Metalstorm808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Why should it have to be vista only?" Well because microsoft owns bungie which owns the halo series so microsoft made it for vista probably so more people buy their OS.
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2he could just be saying that to sell more copies of Vista. I hope not as I want PC gaming to return to it's former glory.
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well you have 2 months
- Wytefang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If this year's batch of PC games is any indication at all, PC gaming's glory has never really left in the first place. As a platform, comparatively, we have the best line-up of 2007, easily. :)
- supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh and one more thing. You PC gamers better buy a good 300 dollar mouse. Yep. And a 60 dollar mouse pad. But you know what, it doesnt matter. Your still gonna die. Someone's gonna stab you. With a knife. If you look behind you as you die you might see XBOX Live's SupermanRED. And you know what, he's using a gamepad and lying back on his couch sipping a jack and coke while you are all stressed out hunched over your DESK moving that mouse of yours... you know the 300 dollar one with like half as many buttons as my gamepad.
Anyone who wants to talk *****, bring it in May baby. Add me to your friends list and let's get it on. I want to kick some mouse/keyboard ASS...
LOL before you guys flame me, Im a PC gamer too. :) - xino, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@DarQraven
"Yeah, however, you used the ONLY game in existence as an example. That's not a feature of xbox live you're mentioning, that's a feature of Gears of War.
Had GoW been made for the PC initially, or any other game platform with internet support, it would also have had the SP->COOP integration."
Any other game platform with Internet support? What about Doom 3, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, or Splinter Cell Double Agent for Xbox 1? They all have co-op, but you can't invite someone to play when you are playing the single player. As far as the PC games having that feature, can you name one? I am not a PC gamer so I wouldn't know, but I am guessing the ones I mentioned for Xbox 1 that are also on PC don't have that feature either.
You also mention that you want a challenge. The gold membership gives you access to matchmaking and that helps find people similar to your skill level.
I agree with your concern about the controller players vs keyboard/mouse players. That does worry me, but I will wait till it comes out before I start complaining about it. - Nightspark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As Halo 2 Vista is not a DX10 game, I would say no.
( Source: http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?link=halo2vistafaqupdate ) - Metalstorm808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's coming out on my birthdate! but I don't have vista =(.
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@avi
Consoles get the benefit of ridiculous auto-aim. Just look at every shooter game ever made for a console. - Aero1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2is xbox windows live its own stand alone program or do you need the game to launch it?
- DarQraven, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"Take Gears of War for example. Personally I see no reason at all to get this service. I want a challenge when I'm gaming, not controller players that suck. ;)
Furthermore, we are supposed to pay for .. what exactly? They don't have dedicated servers for the games or anything, so I don't see why we are paying for the 'privilege' to play against xbox360 owners (complete with host lag). - supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I play well with gamepad, very smooth motions. Its funny to watch gamepad newbs move all jerky-like and say "Mouse and keyboard is better" even though they only have played with the gamepad for 23 seconds. I played doom and quake with gamepad and didnt migrate to mouse/keyboard for a long time.
I will still attempt gamepad for a while when live goes uh live. I'd rather play with my feet up on the coffee table, a beer beside me and laid back on my couch playing on my 26" hdtv.
By the way, what is going on with all the PS3 owners who will be watching us all playing PC vs XBOX?? Will they be still wandering around their HOME thingy trying to find their friends to play an online game? I can see it now... "Dude I just spent 5 minutes getting OUT of Gran Turismo to launch Home and find you, now where the heck are you? Oh there you are behind that tree. Now let's launch Gran Turismo again.. Oh and if the connection ***** up, I'll meet you back here at this tree in 10 minutes so we can try again... LOL reminds me of connecting by MODEM to play Doom. GAY!!! - oldnikon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Really good. Such things make me a bit crazy
- aggies11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Microsoft Can't give Live away for free, otherwise it'l PO the 360 players. What this might do is allow 360 players to get interested in the PC, since their Live accounts carry over (Or at least Microsoft is probably hoping so). It's not so really important to them to get PC users on Live, but rather to get 360 users onto the PC / Vista.
That being said, it would be fantastic if they threw in Halo 2 with your Games for Windows Live Subscription. That way it wouldn't be too much to Swallow for PC gamers. The price tag is pretty fair. A service that doesn't really provide pc gamers with much more than they are used to for free, and a Several year old Console Port.
But I'm not holding my breath as it's pretty rare nowadays for any company to make smart / strategic moves like this.
Aggies - technohead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The mouse/keyboard vs controller debate probably won't be settled with G4WL. Apparently Microsoft will be modifying the speed of the mouse movements to balance the speed or lack of, of the controller.
- Scrappy1850, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2motion control for spore would really make you feel like a god
- supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah quick turnig is important. The game pad makers need to add a whole new set of AXIS so that when you push left HARDit activates a QUICK left turn... And more sensitivity tweaking! I turn up sensitvity all the way, and its still too slow for me.
- Wytefang, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Totally agree about the retarded 'achievement points', which would be better labeled as 'geek cred' instead. Pointless waste of time. Just play the game and enjoy it, stop worrying about your retarded score that generates nothing for you other than derision from your peers for being dumb enough to care about that stuff.
- NeoCortex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Problem is, when this thing becomes really huge, Gamerscore Points will lose what meaning they have left. (If much at all)
How closed off is Microsoft willing to make access to the Gamerscore system? With the 360, everything developed for it has to go through Microsoft at some point, but with Windows games, andybody can produce games rather easily and distribute them. So will Microsoft assert any kind of quality control on giving out points for games. I really don't want to see dozens and dozens of PC games handling Gamerscore points like King Kong did on the 360. - sifusal2000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Wonder how long it will take for a motion controller to play on line PC games. Enjoy using the WII wish I had something like it for some of the more graphic games like gods of war I or II.
