- viewdrix, on 04/09/2008, -2/+31Well, at least the podcast and editors will still be around on 1UP.
I'll miss you, GFW. As everything these days goes online, reading through poorly-written, semi-credible blogs through RSS feeds for news just doesn't have the same comforting allure as a well-constructed professional magazine, read on the toilet. We'll always have that bond, buddy. - skennedy, on 04/09/2008, -1/+29For more on this also check out EIC Jeff Green's blog: http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8693249&public ... "Here's a post I hoped I'd never have to write...you will all have to forgive me if I first take a moment to express what I know many of you are feeling right now: This blows."
- viewdrix, on 04/09/2008, -2/+14...Did you ever read the magazine? It was never a megaphone for Microsoft's marketing department; they just sponsored the magazine. It was Computer Gaming World a year and a half ago.
- Exodin, on 04/09/2008, -1/+13Are you serious? Did you ever read an issue?
- dn11, on 04/09/2008, -0/+11The tie in with Microsoft may have been a bad deal for them in the end, but it was a final attempt to keep the magazine alive. It has a long history and I've always perceived it as having the most substantive and unbiased coverage of all the PC game publications. But in the age of the internet the market for a print magazine about PC games is just too small. I think they should change the name back to CGW now for the online version and get away from the Games for Windows BS.
- LMN8R, on 04/09/2008, -1/+12That sucks, they are an extremely talented bunch and put out a hell of a magazine.
Glad to see that all the editors will stay with 1up, and that GFW Radio won't die! - Dumbledorito, on 04/09/2008, -1/+12Are there any print magazines for games that AREN'T 2/3 ads these days? I mean, I know you have to support your revenue stream, but damn...
- DeucesWild, on 04/09/2008, -2/+12Well this sucks. Now all thats left is PC Gamer. One mag can't last all my toilet breaks for a whole month.
- dn11, on 04/09/2008, -1/+11I haven't read the print version for years. But I was a loyal subscriber to CGW back in the 90's RIP
- theberlindoctor, on 04/09/2008, -0/+7I'm not your buddy, guy.
- Po0py, on 04/09/2008, -1/+8The good news is their podcast will continue. One of the best and funniest gaming podcasts out there, imho. I hope they come up with a new name though. No point in keeping the GFW podcast title.
- ShatteredBlade, on 04/09/2008, -1/+7If you even remotely picked up an actual issue from them, you would notice there are a number of games that weren't just from the console.
- chrismcelligott, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6I'm not your guy, friend.
- Renian, on 04/09/2008, -1/+7I loved Computer Gaming World/Games for Windows. I actually discovered it when I signed up for an MMO. Apparently, a subscription to the game came with a free 12 month subscription to the magazine. And what a magazine it was--especially because the reviewers knew what they were talking about!
I am actually not surprised this happened though. Anyone that saw the Vista/windows logo on the cover of that magazine would have been turned off. And there's also the fact that every goddamn game for the PC recently of note tries to push the graphics to such an extreme (*cough* CRYSIS *cough*) that users constantly have to upgrade. People probably stopped subscribing because they couldn't afford to play computer games any more with the constant machine updating.
That's what happened with me, at least. :(
GAMEPLAY > GRAPHICS - Webnet, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5Ditto this blows big time.
- mashedup, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5I get your point but oh I hate the use of "Well, eventually". My bosses two favourite words. He thinks his f***ing Nostradamus. Actually any sentence that begins with 'Well' really makes me want to punch the speaker in the face. Right sorry I feel better now.
- Makkiux, on 04/09/2008, -1/+5Stay strong and keep up the good work guys. I am sorry to see the artists go, some good people.
- Dragular, on 04/09/2008, -2/+6I read CGW religiously up until about '98 and off and on after that, and I have to say, the name change probably did do them in. Despite the fact that most people are getting buried for saying so.
Not so much because of the Microsoft association, not even because of resentment towards Windows and its flaws... mostly because the magazine itself just didn't "look" like a magazine. Every time I spotted an issue it looked like Microsoft propaganda in the same way the Official Playstation Magazine has always looked like the gaping maw of Sony's PR crew. I realize this is not the case, but only because I read the magazine. Most people would glance at the cover, go, "nah," and move along. Hence all of this. - meso, on 04/09/2008, -2/+6This was an excellent magazine and will be missed....especially seeing as I purchased a 24 month subscribtion in December! What luck. Now I have to choose to get EGM or PC Magazine....I don't want either. I've read that there are no refunds...damn. I want a PC gaming magazine. Give me the money back so I can subscribe to PC Gamer!
- Dantetheinferno, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4I wonder if the reason they got so into debt was because of the massive amount of people who got it free. Did anyone actually pay for theirs, or did they sign up for those one year deals that were all over the net? I didn't pay a cent =
- DrJonez, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4What a bummer. It was bad enough when they essentially killed off Computer Gaming World and tainted such great writing by slapping that awful Games For Windows branding on it, but this is far worse. At least the awesome people that made the magazine will still be sticking around, even if some of the staff is out of a job, and their work is now featured on a trainwreck of a website.
At least before the CGW/GFW guys had the magazine as their little bastion of awesomeness in the world of crap that is 1UP. Now they're forced to coerce people into going to a website that's poorly coded, barely managed, and apparently run by morons, just to see what they're writing. Sigh.
Bummer :[ - mattyice11, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3"When you buy a game that says Games for Windows most of the time means your online is going to suck."
Most 'Games for Windows' games do not use Games for Windows Live for online play. Crysis, Company of Heroes, Sins of a Solar Empire, etc. - mattyice11, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3It's an assurance that the game supports certain features: Vista, 64-bit OS, 360 controller, media center integration, etc.
I don't know what you mean about having problems linking an Xbox Live account with a GFW Live account...they're the same thing. It's only one account and there's no need to link anything. - theragu40, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3Aw, way to ruin it.
- ehal256, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2You caused this. :(
- mbthompson, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2You were responsible for Zero Wing, weren't you?
- Namco, on 04/09/2008, -1/+3I loved the mag and podcast. I only read CGW off and on, but picked up a GFW subscription after the name change. I was onboard with the Games for Windows platform, Vista, and DX10 and was hoping it would take off. GFW magazine is the only magazine I can stand to read cover to cover and am very sad to see it go.
I fell in love with the podcast last year after listening to a few of the episodes. I got turned onto it through Legendary Thread and I really appreciated Jeff, Shawn, Ryan, and Sean's journalistic integrity. Shawn's great stories and gift of analogy are legendary and made each episode epic. I hope the crew stays together as long as possible, but these guys are just too valuable to just be website editors. We'll probably see them splinter off to bigger and better publications over time. Great run while it lasted though. - SPARTACVS, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1CGW/GFW probably could on it's own. With PC Gamer it'll probably take you 10 minutes to breeze by all the humongous graphics and painfully obvious reviewrtisments (Did anyone read the Crysis issue? It would've been IMPOSSIBLE to give it a negative review with that cover story, he gave it better than The Orange Box!). Might not even last you ONE trip to the can.
- Zoness, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1Well online only publishing defeats the point of having a "magazine" consider me out. I perferred it when it was CGW now GFW although they may of had specific biases it wasn't as obvious a magazine called "Games for Windows"
- Nekura20x6, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1I really wanted to pick this up on the newsstand, but I was sick that day...
- BostonLow, on 04/09/2008, -2/+3Finest gaming magazine there ever was. I'm not a crying man, but if I was, I'd be in tears right now.
- the-Jer, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1I would have to agree that this sucks. I can't read the online magazine on the plane or anywhere I might not happen to have my laptop. This sucks. This was a stupid decision.
- ehal256, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Every game for the PC? The only recent one I can think of is Crysis. Sins of a Solar Empire, nope. Audiosurf, nope. Orange Box, nope.
- SPARTACVS, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1"I will not be renewing my subscription."
No *****. It's impossible to do so. - ehal256, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1In all the year's that I've been subscribed to them, I haven't seen any unexcusable levels of bias. It's all pretty minor if at all. Man, this sucks :(
- Namco, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Why'd you digg us both down? I know it was you.
- Warcloud, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1GFW was a very good magazine. But with PC gaming in decline, and the magazine industry in decline, I guess the market for PC gaming mags is shrinking big time.
I'm not too impressed with Microsoft, letting this magazine die. They re branded as "Games for Windows" after establishing the "Computer Gaming World" brand for 20+ years. I guess the relationship there wasn't as strong as you'd think. - inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Not until they make a display that can handle the high humidity of a bathroom.
/think it through - kylesellers, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1I was going to protest that my subscription still has another year and a half left, but then I remembered that I got that subscription for free on a link from Joystiq a while back.
Well, I guess I'll be getting what I paid for. - Exodin, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1They insulted Windows, Vista, and the GFW franchise on a daily basis. This "bias" is all in your head.
- Doomsan, on 04/09/2008, -2/+2Well, eventually every magazine will go online.
- theberlindoctor, on 04/09/2008, -2/+2I'm not your friend, dad.
- docholoday, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1"And as for those of you who are current subscribers, you'll receive postcards shortly with further instructions". Great, just great. I had a subscription to the magazine until 2015. It's not like I'm going to read their website when I'm in the bathroom.
- DeusGear, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1What will I read in the crapper now :(
- peterinjapan, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1I'm a publisher of (really, really niche) software for Windows, specifically PC dating-sim games from Japan, but in English. I wonder if the cancellation of the magazine is indication of the decline of the PC as a gaming platform, or of magazines as a medium for us to get information from?
- mryokai, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1I never read the mag, but the guys in the brodeo really bring a unique perspective to PC Games, especially Shaun Elliott. RIP GFW Magazine
- SPARTACVS, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1Poking your eyes out would be less painful. I suggest EGM.
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1I totally loved reading this magazine in the early 90's when I was a teenager. When I was saving up money for M1 Tank Platoon, I would always flip to the back looking for the latest deals on the advertisement pages.
- MidnightRealism, on 04/09/2008, -2/+1The latter. It's really hard for magazines to compete with weblogs. PC gaming isn't in such dire shape that there's no interest in news and reviews for products on the platform.
- Myztry, on 04/09/2008, -2/+1It doesn't just cover games for Windows. An increasing number of those game run on Linux now too :)
