- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -9/+77"How can we expect a fully playable PS3 game whenn it's still more than 6 months to release?"
Maybe Sony should ask Microsoft how they did it last year? I was at E3 05 and saw prolly 5-6 playable 360 games 6 months before it released. If Sony can't pull this off then what everyone is saying about the PS3 is probably true.
At least then we could replace Duke Nukem Forever jokes with PS3 jokes. - Koopa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+67I really hope Sony gets what's coming to them this time. Last year, they swindled most of the press and many gamers into thinking that their CG was real-time, or that their CG was what could be expected in real-time. All they had were some pretty videos, a nice-looking case, and some sort of a boomerang/controller (controller-ang?). Their hype really annoys me--even starting back with the PS2 (Toy Story graphics! Emotion Engine!).
For all Nintendo's faults, at least it seems genuine. They don't have ridiculous PR about how PS2 will be like hacking into the Matrix (Ken Kutaragi really said something like that), or a wannabe 30-something year old guy pretending to be "hip" and "cool" (Microsoft's J Allard). I'm not an idiot, I don't want you to be my friend, I don't want you to try to be cool, I don't want to be promised something I know I can't get--I want some awesome new games, and even if Nintendo doesn't always get it right, at least they get it. - SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45Sony so far is all smoke and mirrors, we've seen enough of their pre-rendered movies already. The only thing we know for sure about the PS3 is that it will be expensive. What interests me is what Nintendo's new controller and gameplay will be like. Will it be the console that gets my girlfriend/sister/parents addicted to video games?
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28"At least then we could replace Duke Nukem Forever jokes with PS3 jokes."
I thought the latest joke was that DNF would be the first playable PS3 title and it would be unveiled at E3 2010? - Archangeleon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28I think Nintendo is going to have the most intriguing showing as well. But definitely the reason that so many people are interested in it is because it's something different. With Sony and Microsoft, you pretty much know what's going to be shown, and that's just nicer versions of essentially the same games as before. With Nintendo, you're going to see something completely different, which is much better than nicer graphics and rediculous price tags.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23But if all the rumors are bad, they probably point to a truth that's worse.
It isn't surprising to me that at this point, people are more interested in Nintendo. The last year has been nothing but negative press and rumors for Sony, they seem to be in the midst of a complete collapse. No one believe them anymore. No one honestly believes that they can deliver anything they promise. On the other hand, Nintendo has crafted a sterling reputation has being almost too honest about their products. On many occassions when MS and Sony are hyping their products to infinity and beyond, Nintendo's standing back saying, "well we've got something that we like and we hope other people will like it too, it might be okay, or pretty good even." I think that gets people's attention more now than yet another press conference full of hype and bravado. In the current game market being honest is such a rarity that Nintendo's pretty much got the honesty market cornered and people are taking notice.
That I think people are just sick of Sony. I think half of their former fan base wishes they'd just go down in flames and stay down. They're kinda like EA at this point. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I dig on Nintendo because they seem to be focusing on the *games*, rather than shiny graphics and polygon counts. I don't care how pretty it is, if the game sucks I'm not interested in playing it.
- SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29"I was at E3 05 and saw prolly 5-6 playable 360 games" - furtwan1
The 360 had 2 playable demos at e3, both running off of mac G5 dev kits. Sega's Full Auto and EA's Need for Speed: Most Wanted. The rest of the developers did not waste developement time making demos for e3. Some didn't even show up. Bizzare with PGR3 and Rare with Perfect Dark Zero were both absent from the show last year, as they scrambled to get these games out for the launch of the 360. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25I for one have interest in only 2/3 of the next gen systems.
Xbox 360 for MCE & high end games
Nintendo for non-raping of my budget and innovation
If I am an example of the future market Sony is losing ground. - jgee, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26Well...Sony and Nintendo are both releasing at the same general time, so that's really no excuse anyway.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Nintendo has the unknown, new-concept thing going. It's a kind of system we really haven't seen before in this format. Of course people are going to be interested in it! I mean, come on, the controller is motion sensitive!
Nintendo really has a chance this time around to set some new precedent in the world of console gaming, just like they did with Brain Age for the DS in Japan. - subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20I sure as hell know I'm more exicted over what Nintendo has to offer than what Sony does.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Nintendo has said that they have some more software and *hardware* surprises in store in addition to the controller and online consul BTW.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I'm half an half really. The only reason I'm not more interested in Nintendo is because I'm confident that whatever else they add to it will be great. But Sony' I'm interested in because I want to see how much of their hype they can/will live up to. I remember the whole emotion engine fiasco and I'm interested to know what promises they can live up to this time.
Plus there has been nothing but bad rumors for Sony. And rumors are just that, rumors, but there is always a chance they are more. - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I agree. The motion sensitive controller is such a simple idea that it's pure brilliance. I mean, I'm one of those people who instinctively jerk the controller and tip it thinking it might help me move a bit more to the side when things get intense. And now it will help. It's so obvious it's amazing no one thought of it before, but that's why it's going to be so successful, it's intuitive and natural. It's going to leave Sony and MS using controllers that really aren't much different from the basic layout of the Dual Shock and N64 controllers, which came out nearly a decade ago.
You can't be next gen and use outmoded technology. - TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Simon, Top Spin was running, too.
- CubeFarmDrone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Personally I'm more interested in women and beer, but pies......that's a close third. mmmmmmm.........pies..........aaaaaaagggggggg.
- DEFSMAC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11i remember watching both nintendo's and sony's E3 press conferences on 1up last year. i was way more excited about nintendo and there's definitely was the more enjoyable to watch. sony's on the other hand was nothing but stupid specs and gay videos like ohh here is a movie of 1000 leaves flying around the screen. and here are a 1000 bubbles floating around. with the psp ailing and lacking any good games, and with all the uncertainty around the ps3, nintendo has all the momentum heading into the release of the revolution especially with the ds lite on the way.
- aristofeles, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15That means duke nuke forever is cold fusion?
- n3rrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm still confused about the November launch window for Sony. Is the hardware finalized yet? Weren't they redesigning the controller? Has it "gone gold" yet? If not, how can anybody realisitcly expect it/them to be ready, with two million units ready to ship, in November?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Turns out the Xbox 360 is Powered by Dead Kittens.
- donatj, on 10/12/2007, -14/+23ps3 is just the next vista, and vista is the next duke nukem forever.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I cartainly am, the PS3 is ajust another overpriced"enterainment hub" that is what my computer is for. Nintendo is releasing an innovative and affordabel console that has 1 puprose, GAMING! that is what a console should be for.
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10if you're curious about their hype machine, and how (in)efficient it is.. look at the pre-rendered motorstorm video from last year's e3 compared to videos / screenshots of it running on nearly final dev kits, which were shown at gdc.
- dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11To say xbox live is not innovative is kinda insane if you ask me.
MS was the first to have every game run through a "system" like live. This assures that the gamer will have a reliable online experience with just about every game. Not to mention being able to stream audio to every game over the network. They were also the first to have anything like marketplace on a console. I dont know about you, but I love being able to download demos right to my console. If this wasnt innovative, please tell me of another console that allowed you to do this?
And lets not forget that Nintendo publicly said that "gamers dont care about playing online" yeah thats some innovative thinking right there. (please note I LOVE nintendo and will be buying revolution, but that statement was almost as insane as yours) - synthetikbmz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think a lot of us (or at least I) won't be able to afford 3, or even 2 of the systems. I think that has a lot to do with the outcome of the poll too ...the Revolution isn't going to drain our pockets.
- Koopa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11No, your comment is just inane.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9People have been knocking other game systems since Sega began the ***** storm we now call fanboyism back in the early 90's. People knocked Atari, then Nintendo, then Sega, then Nintendo again, then Microsoft, then Nintendo again and now Sony joins the long list of hated game companies while Nintendo is becoming the first to ever pull themselves out of such a slump. Sony's just following the same patterns that lead to the decline of Atari and Sega and Nintendo before it. Nintendo's been lucky enough to outlast everyone else and now they have the experience to know that following old patterns doesn't work anymore.
And if Sony does release that boomerang controller, not even God Himself could save the PS3 from becoming the laughing stock of E3. I doubt God Himself could save Sony at all at this point, they've dug themselves the deepest hole I've ever seen a game maker dig before and I've been following console wars like a sport since the early 80's. - DragonQuester, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12holy crap! this is amazing! go Nintendo! they are finally getting the recognition they deserve.
- dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Thats good in theory, but graphics do matter. They make the games more enjoyable to play most of the time.
If it didnt matter they would still be making games for the N64 .The new controller could have easily been added, and being able to download old games is great, but has nothing to do with the hardware thats in the revolution. They could have easily did the same with gamecube with an add on. So if you ask me, what the hardware can do will be a huge factor.
With that said I am a HUGE fan of nintendo, and will be buying their next system. And yes they will have some great games with great gameplay. But I am sure that the graphics and look of the games will be fantastic. I always thought out of the xbox, ps2, and gc, that the gc always had the best look to in terms of in game rendering.
I am also really enjoying 360. Games like Oblivion alone make it worth the purchase for me. And I dont know about you, but when I play games like G.R.A.W, the graphics really pull me into the experience. You couldnt have games like that without the power behind them.
Though I do agree that gameplay should be first (which is why I still play my nes all the time) but to say graphical power doesnt matter is just not true on any level. - ddmagnas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think one of the biggest things Nintendo has going for it is the Revolution's price. No Nintendo console, as far as I'm aware, has ever launched at more than $199. Compared to the prices of the 360($299-399) and the speculated price of the PS3(anywhere from $299-499), it's a steal. So even if people aren't going to buy a Revolution at launch, a couple years from now those same people might be looking to get some more gaming real estate. With a Revolution at $150 or so by that point with a bunch of really fun, really unique games that don't need to take up valuable HDTV input port space, I could definitely see people deciding to pick up a Revolution in addition to their first console choice, whether it's PS3 or 360. By not positioning themselves as direct competitors with Sony and Microsoft, the guys at Nintendo have a shot at getting more Revolutions into people's homes than either of their competitors' products.
- dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"We don't need bump mapping and realistic hair texturing for Mario... for *****'s sake it's MARIO. It's not SUPPOSED to look realistic. Sweet Jesus, what do you guys want, a highly texturized, bump mapped, ultra-realistic portrayal of an Italian plumber from the Bronx? Ew."
hey thats great if you only want to play cartoon games I agree...but I dont know about you, but I loved playing RE4 on my gamecube. Now had they made the hardware not be able to do all that great lighting, AA, mip mapping, higher poly, higher texure, better surface rendering...well the game would have sucked.
so much denial in here its silly.
Relax the revolution will have good hardware, and be very capable. you dont have to play it down. - racketboy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Sony doesn't have hype behind them than their own.
Even Microsoft has more exciting things than them.
Nintendo has a hype machine behind them with some real creative products - GuyNextDoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7As support to this argument, let me use as proof in point the success of "awful" games like "50 Cent: Bulletproof". This game was universally slammed by critics, but yet it has still sold over 1 million copies. Despite any advice to the contrary, gamers were not held back from buying this game. Plain and simple, the average consumer doesn't read digg, doesn't read joystiq or kotaku, or any of the popular gaming sites (gamespot, ign, 1up). They go on the image and appeal of branding. Nintendo could bring a massive bag of sweet tricks to the party, and no one may care.
Folks, as much as we get excited about E3, the majority of people around haven't even heard of the event. This is an event that caters to the industry and hardcore fans. Go ahead and ask your co-workers if they have ever heard of E3 - I bet 9 out of 10 will say "what is that?".
as a quick edit: I find it quite ironic, that while the Nintendo brand has mass recognition by the average consumer, somewhere along the way, a disconnect has occured. Most people will know the name Nintendo, but then dis the name in the next sentence. - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Nintendo is releasing at the same time as the PS3 and their system has had playable tech demos since last summer (press only) and it's going to be fully playable at E3, there's even a contest to get a chance to be the first person to play it. If Sony doesn't have a playable PS3 available, on the floor, for all to play by E3, they won't be making a successful November launch if they launch at all because no one would be stupid enough to put down $400-500 on a system that they can't try first.
- Poddo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, no, I don't...
- Dinosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Viva la revolucion!
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think the difference in graphics won't be so bad. Sure the PS3 and the 360 will be pumping out more realistic graphics, but let's be honest here: Nintendo is making this system for themselves to develop games for. End of story. They'd like to bring a few 3rd parties with them, but mainly it's the console and Mario.
We don't need bump mapping and realistic hair texturing for Mario... for *****'s sake it's MARIO. It's not SUPPOSED to look realistic. Sweet Jesus, what do you guys want, a highly texturized, bump mapped, ultra-realistic portrayal of an Italian plumber from the Bronx? Ew. - Morseg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I personally can't wait for the Nintendo Revolution, and as this poll suggests, a lot of other people are also excited. And I agree with synthetikbmz, Companies like Nintendo should focus on gameplay just as much as they do on hardware. The fact that people still play there Super nintendo and N64 suggests that gameplay is more important than hardware.
- allarise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'll go ahead and disagree with you xodex. As unscientific as Joystiq's survey is - it's a more proof that what you just submitted.
It's weird how people think that Sony and Microsoft are in such hot 1 on 1 competition, as if Nintendo is the poor kid that can't afford the new sneakers.
Nintendo makes more money off videogames than the other two by a long shot. They've been the business longer than the Media Company and the OS company for a reason, they know how to stay in business. There's no doubt in my mind Nintendo could produce a system that would rival the other two in terms of raw horsepower and be a media hub, et al. But they aren't. They chose not to because they understand what gamers want, videogames. Fun games that people will buy because the gaming experience will be top notch.
You can take this to the bank: the bulk of PS3 and 360 sales in the next couple of years will be because one is a BluRay movie player and the other is an HD-DVD player. Not because of the awesome games. - sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Splitt3rxx- I officially love you, and am going to add you to my friends, such a great comment. I have been saying that for years.
If I want to go on the internet, I will use my computer, if I want to watch a movie, I will use my dvd player, not my Xbox or PS2. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So polls around election time that are all over CNN and other news sources "aren't news"?
- nuble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yet still made more money. way more money.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Whoa! Attention! Why are you on digg if you aren't a geek?
And no way am I getting a PS3. - Poddo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm confident what Nintendo adds will be great too, but that doesn't mean I'm not interested in it. They've said countless times there are more secrets and suprises to be revealed at E3. It's a great time to be a gamer..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah that didn't make any sense to me.
- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Damn right. Sony + MS seem to just be interested in whether they can add 10 more fps to a 3D shooter. Been there, done that. Making it more convincing doesn't make it more fun... Almost every game I've played on PS2 I've been bored of in no time. I've had much more playing Super Smash Bros., Wind Waker etc.
- Bleakvoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I for one will say I'm excited to see what Nintendo has in store for this E3...we all know that Sony will either be trying to woo us with technical specs or shiny, spiffy graphics. What gets my vote for Nintendo is that everything is taking a backseat to the act of gaming this time around.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Pies Don't Play Elder Scrolls Oblivion :(
- allarise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What do you mean by "real" console. Like, "Real" expensive? As if the Rev is a figment of someone's imagination and won't be a console that sits next to your TV and allows you to play videogames. You should probably rephrase your statement to read, "I still need a media hub that can push a lot of graphics and also play games on."
I don't think any sane person can deny the 360 is an amazing piece of hardware and that MS has really gotten it right in terms of Live and the UI of the system, etc.. But the Revolution will very much be a "Real" Console. -
