- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14A kid posts on forums the desire to kill himself, the community begs him not to do it, the webmaster calls him and tries to help him, pleading with him not to do it, kid does it.
Media says the website 'broadcasts' this kid's suicide via, and people on the forums considered it a joke, and they only figured out it was real once this kid failed to show up for 'gamer meetings'.
Webhost is so outraged, they suspend the site's account.
And what the flying ***** digg!? We take down a camera store because they overcharge a guy, but some blatant, outright lie like this is broadcast through the mainstream media and NONE OF THE COMMENTS SEEM TO HAVE ANY CARE? A website has been shut down, a community's reputation has been destroyed, and so has ours, by being gamers and geeks.
I am completely disgusted. Not just by the media, but by coming here and reading comments like
"Well, he got his 15 minuets of fame. Now whos gonna be the first to do it on Digg?".
Deplorable. - cstuekey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7OK, there are a few things i would like to say here. first, my name is Cyndi S. I am Mitch's younger sister. I received the link to this page in an email, and jesus was I disgusted. The AFP needs to do research if they are going to write a story like this. But, furthermore, this isn't something that is news worthy. This is real and my family is in pain. I couldn't help but cry when reading their ***** story. the time line and events are wrong. I know what truly happened. so ***** them.
Also, some of these comments are horrible. I hope something like this never happens to any of your families, because this is the hardest thing I have ever been through. I lost my only blood brother and a hero. If you REALLY knew who my brother was, you would know that he WAS NOT an attention hog. He was a great guy and a great brother. also, our mother did not found the online gamers anonymous.
At first reading some of these comments made me mad and feel like finding you ***** and giving a hard core beating. But, why waste my time and emotions on some people who get a rise out of my family's pain. It isn't worth it.
But, I do know that there are some of you people who knew my brother, either from gaming, or in real life. And i wanted to thank you for defending my brother. He was a great writer and I know he would be disgusted to find out how terrible they did at giving the truth. But most of all, Mitchell was not only a great brother, but a great person. So please, just let him rest in peace. - Kiwwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm sorry, anybody who believes that this is something to joke about ought to take a damn good look at themselves, have you ever had TRUE hardship in your life? If you haven't, then keep to yourself, you apparently haven't the depth of character required to begin to understand such issues, if you have, and you STILL believe that this is something to joke about, you are the type of person I feel ashamed to share the title "Human" with.
Anybody who feels as thought they are outraged about this, don't simply post in digg's comments, complain directly to AFP, I have posted the letter I have sent to them, feel free to copy/paste it, you can find AFP's contact website here; http://www.afp.com/english/afp/?pid=contact
I have contacted you simply to explain personally my utter disgust at the misinformation within your article on the suicide of one Mitchell S. aka 'kuja105' and the website 'metalgearsolid.org'.
The misinformation within this article not only paints the incident with ENTIRELY the wrong brush, it insults the community's that are involved and in my opinion, was either written with the intent to do so, or without regard or understanding of the seriousness of the matters involved, and in either case, should not have been written.
This incident shows problems with your authors, editorial staff, researchers or perhaps all of these departments, in that such a slanderous article, filled with misinformation and misrepresentations could even make it onto your website.
This incident slanders and insults not only the late Mitchell S. aka 'kuja105' and metalgearsolid.org, but the gaming community in general by portraying the members of metalgearsolid.org as uncaring and unsympathetic, and in turn, tarnishing the rest of the community with the same brush.
If the article has not already been pulled, I (and every other INFORMED reader of your article) STRONGLY urge you to consider doing so, as articles have already been written concerning the incorrectness of your article (http://news.gaminghorizon.com/media2/1137635340.3198.html) and the community is beginning to notice (http://digg.com/gaming/Gamer_Commits_Suicide,_Media_Misreports).
This articles being written is not only an insult to Mitchell S. aka ‘kuja105’, but is tarnishing your website’s reputation as a reputable source of information.
Yours,
-My Name Removed :)- - tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Rediculous. Absolutely rediculous. The media absolutely disgusts me. How can you possibly take a story as serious and as grave as this is and not bother checking your facts? the AFP flat out lied. Period. And what's gonna happen to them? Absolutely nothing. Because the AFP has a repuation of being a respected news source while the gaming community is looked down upon as unstable, cruel, sadistic bastards.
Sad, so very sad. But thats OK, just as long as gaming gets a bad repuation, their warped idea of reporting is OK in their book..
Jack Thompson is gonna take this story and run with it, cause thats the type of idiot he is. - Scuba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2**ATTENTION DIGGERS**
Everyone should get there arses over to http://www.afp.com/english/afp/?pid=contact and tell them how you feel about this horrible article that they have published.
I personally submitted a "Press Release" with the entire contents of the GamingHorizon article included.
I urge everyone to do something similar, we can't stand by while they totally destroy this guy's family, friends and hobby. - wierdaaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@tapo
Amen.
If you'd like to contact the newswire that published this lie-filled story, you can do it through a form here http://www.afp.com/english/afp/?pid=contact - allwave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sorry -- http://www.metalsgearsolid.org
- nesdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's so sad. Every bit of it. I'm speechless.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow......since when did the media Misreport?
- Cronos1388, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=2000075&topic=25527152&page=0
- I2eflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I doubt any of you people know me, but I am one of the Regulars at http://www.metalgearsolid.org, and on Mitch's behalf I'd like everyone here to know how much this guy meant to everyone he knew.. I can't quite articulate myself at the moment, but everything Cyndi said is 100% truth, every word of it. I knew Mitch for just a short while, but he was always cool with about every single person that came into contact with him. Seems that every so often when I'd be feeling down, he always had something to say to give me a different view on any given situation.
I hate to say it, though, but the fact that he took his own life disappoints me, but whats done is done, and there is seldom any of us can do about it. I know a bunch of you probably think this is just another internet stunt, trust me, it's not. He was one of the most beloved members in our community, as well as his community in real life.
If any of you have even the slightest bit of humanity in you, I'd suggest that you stop yapping off at the face about his untimely death and get back to whats important to you, lest you end up where he is now. - wierdaaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Title and description are misleading"?
Title: "Gamer Commits Suicide"
Description: "The gamer who committed suicide did not broadcast himself on the forum. "
"but there is no mention here of what happened on http://www.metalgearsolid.com"
The article mentions mgs.org about 9 times, has a quote from an admin from there, and explains why it's down. - ZerozenOnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I say lets see some digg-tivism guys ! The GameFAQs article points to the AFP sites for comments.
http://www.afp.com/english/afp/?pid=contact
Take a minute to demand a public erratum through this form.
I'm thinking that pointing out the link to the GameFAQs forum might be apropriate.
I did and heres the essantial of my comment. I invite you to make your own or to copy mine:
"I find this situation to greatly diminish the credibility of your news organization and will, upon failure to publish an erratum,
personnaly no longer consider AFP a reliable and credible source of information.
I would like to point out the following online forum where the deceised announced his intention:
http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=2000075&topic=25527152&page=6
I believe you will find that the ensuing discussion is generally devoid of any taunting or mocking and that genuine care, has is to be expoected of descent people, is expressed. The opinions undoubtedly vary but I have found the overall thread to be a healthy discussion on the matter of suicide.
Thus, I respectfully request and expect your organization to publish an article correcting the situation.
All people make mistakes. Only those who fail to correct them should be judged." - Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"His mother founded Online Gamers Anonymous. He was a sick *****, but Sony still handled it like dicks."
I took a look at their 12 steps, it looks a whole lot more like "you're screwed, believe in jeebus" than something that could actually help you (if addiction to internet games was even proven). - plastikimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if they had his number, why didnt the call the cops?
- aemaeth7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BRAVO TAPEN.
Listen to this man. Open your eyes people. Anonymity does not grant you the right to be ***** online. - ViSioN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cronos1388: annoucning it wasn't what they were talking about. The AFP said he *broadcasted* it which was a lie.
Thats a terrible story. The media disgusts me. I feel sorry for the family. The media must be making it extra tough on them. - smileyofdeath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This has hit my town and my friends big. I was friends with the kid and went to school with him and this shocked all of us. I talked to him a few days before the incident and he seemed fine. I am not lying that I know him, that would be pathetic to play on someones death like that.
- TennBikeBerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a sad story.
It's a shame the media totally misrepresented it. - Cronos1388, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually he did announce it on Gamefaqs.
- SecondChild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Deagle - it's because reporting this particular suicide furthers the cause of people who oppose violent video games. It's goold old fashioned American spin, pure and simple.
I feel for the family and friends of the suicide, not to mention the kid (Mitchell? Did I catch that right?) himself.
My sympathies to all. =( - Arkz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i contacted the news company regarding this saying "what you have done is sick, you have exploited someones suicide, lied, and put the blame on the people of metalgearsolid.org. your story was almost completely made up of lies. and all for what? publicity? disgusting!" i think its awful!
- PsycoMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actualy saw this on gamefaqs :0( http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=2000075&topic=25527152
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just shows you how twisted the media is.
- l1wulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sounds like they got a couple of stories mixed up (specifically the suicide form earlier this month and Brandon Vedas' (http://www.brandonvedas.com/ look under the "Internet Info" tab for logs) overdose.
- fenix25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.metalsgearsolid.org is down i think. sad story
- rookieone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man thats sad that they would even do that, proly to get att or sometihng, dam thats just wrong.
- allwave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll digg -- but there is no mention here of what happened on http://www.metalgearsolid.com -- the site is down and I didn't read anything from them, since that's where the broadcast apparently occurred.
- Cronos1388, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cronos1388: annoucning it wasn't what they were talking about. The AFP said he *broadcasted* it which was a lie.
Thats a terrible story. The media disgusts me. I feel sorry for the family. The media must be making it extra tough on them.
oh ok. It's kind of depressing because although I didn't really know him, I had seen him around the boards. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its weird that this suicide was reported at all, the media doesnt usually report suicides, so why was this one reported? Thats the question.
- cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no one said life is suppose to be easy..
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sad story I wished it didn't have to be reported in the first place
+digg...But I wished I didn't have to - p3lEr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is very sad....tough live
- jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What an attention whore. Jesus christ.
- ch1ckster, on 03/04/2009, -1/+1Attention whore... No. People don't commit suicide to get attention. They commit suicide to end their misery - something that you do not, can not, and will not understand if you are calling him an attention whore. Depression isn't being 'sad', it's being trapped inside your own mind without understanding that the word 'hope' has meaning.
Honestly. - fcodc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ignore the ignorants
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very sad. Rest in peace
- hardkoretom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0none of u really give a damn about the media. so why are all of you getting your panties in a bunch over this misreport done by a media source. its like no news source has ever fudged on a story in the history of this country. it sucks that this dude committed suicide over personal problems but he also wasnt somebody who was in Iraq who died when their hummer got bommbed by a morter either. so shut up about the damned media because they will always fudge stories from now till the end of time because they want numbers and dont give a crap about anything other than that!!
- pronouncable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@tapo
agreed. - AETAaAS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Freakin media is trying to give gamers a bad name...
- DenDen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reporter's vocabulary and grammar were flawed, the first sign of a botched reporter...
"After he failed to appear at regular meeting spots, gamers went to his home and learnt he died in hospital on January 7." - mattv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0please please please no more jack thompson insanity
- baltakatei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Reporters with an agenda. :/
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sure this is very unfortunate. Taking you're own life at a time when change is mostly likely to happen.
I mean, from experience, when you are at you're lowest of despair something big happens i.e. you kick your ass into doing something to get your life better...
so to all those kids feeling real down... it means you are closer to a real solution to your probs. - serra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2That guy is (er, was) just pathetic, and then to go make his "friends" suffer by posting about it before he does it is just messed up.

Dugg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0These idiot staff jounalists on ***** little two bit papers and radio and TV stations, who think they're entitled to change the truth to fulfil a Rupert Murdoch style presentation agenda in a ratings war will be the death of real journalism.
