- TenebrousX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27the hardest game is SkiFree, when the Abominable Snow Monster Robot eats you

- LordofChaosIori, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23I always thought Super Monkey Ball was hard... it always made me want to slam my Gamecube against the wall.

- noisymime, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Its kind of like an online gambling game... Except that your betting with your work documents, family photos, music collection etc.
- aydoubleyou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Defender was the first video game I ever played. My dad owns the actual arcade version of Stargate (Im 18, he bought it about 20 years ago). Let me tell you, I've been playing it all my life and I still cant get past wave 25.

- speedk0re, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11i was in the process of typing up a long winded verbose comment about how i will no longer support lists with 50 billion pages for generating ad revenue.
Then i read this comment, and, well, it was just way better. - pixelate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Everything on one page:

- Majorkerina, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Perish the thought of Diggers reading beyond 2 pages...
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5i wasn't aware games depreciated in difficulty over time
- PixelEater, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Let's keep it on one page.

- empath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Gamasutra is a webzine for game designers. It wasn't about choosing the 20 hardest games, just choosing 20 games that are difficult and help the author illustrate a point about difficulty in game design.

http://ski.ihoc.net/ - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Since the site's down, I'm just guessing that they had Ikaruga on the list...
- crushfan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah, that's right. I heard that he's got NORTON!
- santiago1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4 Dude, kudos to your Dad!
Stargate was my absolute favorite arcade game! I LOVED the fast pace and quick reflexes needed!
Unfortunately, I've tried the PC and console versions... not so fun... :-( - Nidy1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Ghosts and goblins
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5you killed Gamasutra? well played. I've NEVER seen that site offline before.
- lokee73, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3KABOOM!
Ok, one of the best three games EVER on the Atari 2600.
The trick to getting to 10,000 was zoning out completely. If you had to think about what you were doing (or blink), you were done.
This is going to sound like utter crap, but you (or at least I) had to get in this meditative state where you lost all awareness of your body. - MattyLite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What? No Ikaruga? Ah well!
- balloonenstein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3this article is about games that are difficult, but fair. Games like battletoads are hard because of cheap attacks that can't be reacted to fast enough, so you have to memorize the patterns through trial and error. That isn't fair, games like Ninja Gaiden (xbox version, never played the original) are hard because it requires that the player masters the controls to know what attack to use at each moment, when to block and when to evade. There are no patterns to memorize and there is no trial and error, that's the way hard games should be. Not hard because you have to die first to realize there is someone hiding behind something that you were supposed to just magically know about.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Sorry but it only works for one page. Therefore the big red thumb.
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2when has it ever been?
- JohnH, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As the author of the article, on the off chance anyone's still reading this....
- As I said, it's not a list of the 20 hardest games, but there are a few of the hardest ever made on the list. I would put Defender against any game mentioned in these comments.
- F-Zero GX, if I had thought of it, would have made the list, although I'm not sure what would be displaced to make room for it. Remember, Amusement Vision, the Monkey Ball people, made it. I also would have mentioned Zanac. Oh well.
- I tried including a wide variety of games, but with an emphasis on older games (which fewer people would be familiar with) over recent ones.
- Many of the games offered here as harder than those present, like Contra and Castlevania, are also favorites of mine. They are indeed difficult, but speaking as someone who's beaten Contra many times without the 30 life code, and with it having looped the game six times in one play, and who can finish Castlevania without continuing, I do not think any of the 20 games are easier than those. - RoflcopterFUEL, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Shinobi for the Ps2.
Damn those bottomless pits... - nonpareil, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I love these gamasutra pieces but reading them is somehow like doing video game homework.
- ortucis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1640/game_design_essentials_20_.php?print=1
- MattyLite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Nope :(
- kidcodea, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5no, its a series of tubes. its been proven by wise men.
- psykiv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Blast Corps isn't hard? It's all about controlling the backlash and learning the *exact* paths for platinum (as in, don't waste time destroying everything, only destroy what is absolutely 100% necessary). I could go from zero to every platinum in less than two weeks now. The first time took me a few YEARS though.
Blast corps ftw! - MattyLite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Oddly enough I ordered that game on eBay a few days ago and just got it in the mail today :) Just played it for the first time like 5 hours ago lol.
- mbthompson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's down, freaking crap.
- Orlong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I noticed Smash TV isnt on the list nor any of the R-Type games which are harder than any game on this list
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Imagine Digg if all comments were as useful as empath's. /irony
- InvisibleMan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Included load runner and original Zelda -> Greatest thing ever made in the 8 bit era. I really like remake of load runner with the funny cut senses and on screen animation, but then I might not like it as much if I didn't play the Two color version when I was 5. Good Times.
- NobodyButYou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Kid Icarus!
- Chizz44, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Defender, Robotron and Stargate were my favorite games. Those games were so hard that you actually broke a sweat playing them (or maybe that was the sweltering heat generated by all the machines in the old-school arcades with no AC). I used to rock those games so hard that my friends used to give me their last quarters instead of playing them, just so they could watch! That's back when a quarter actually meant something!
- dysonlu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Judging by the comments here, most of you probably weren't old enough to have played or even cared about two of the most cruel games ever made: Solomon's Key and Deadly Towers (both of which are mentioned in the article). I played these games 20 years ago, when I was only a small kid. Their devilish difficulty marked my memory forever. In a way, it was fortunate that back then I was still only a child, with a limited persistance (or stubborness); otherwise, it would have driven me insane. These games were so hard it should be illegal or should come with a warning in the box. Compared to them, games like today's Ninja Gaiden is nothing, as far as difficulty is concerned.
- achoi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I didn't think Contra was that hard. But then again, I've played it enough times where I would challenge myself to finish the game with one life... bah I just identified myself as a tool.
Anyways, Battletoads was HARD. - Jujubes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1... that's because those two games weren't very difficult compared to many of the old NES (and earlier) games.
- lordmike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Defender was friggin' impossible... I can't believe people liked that game so much.. it drove me CRAZY!
- dslartoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"All video games amount to leaping like a trained poodle when you get down to it." Ahahahahahaha. This gets a digg for that sentence alone, though the rest of the article is first-rate too.
- dslartoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Target Earth was a lot easier when you found the invincibility cheat. :)
