- internetisscary, on 11/05/2009, -3/+286The resealing of used games as new is their absolute WORST offense.
- darzeecompany, on 11/05/2009, -3/+201I once challenged the clerk at Gamestop when he tried to sell me a "new" game that he had just taken out of an envelope in a drawer in front of me and "sealed" in the case with round plastic stickers on the edges. I told him if I'm buying a new game, I wanted it the way it comes from the factory. He said "Oh, you're one of THOSE people." I don't go there anymore.
- mrMunchies, on 11/05/2009, -1/+144DAMN YOU YELLOW USED GAME STICKERS!!!
- Kerplunk5975, on 11/05/2009, -1/+100Dugg for wii chainsaw.
- fallout49, on 11/05/2009, -1/+92The mall Gamestops are the worst. Parents leave their kids there and run away. I stopped going there a while ago.
- tidu, on 11/05/2009, -0/+80this article made me realize that I only ever go to GameStop because of proximity...
- mattyboy555, on 11/05/2009, -2/+74Once I seen a kid go sell his game. They said it was worth 1$, but since this said game was damaged, they needed $2 damage fee FROM the kid so it can be sold.
Basically it was cheaper for the kid to just throw it in the garbage, - Imissnaptime, on 11/06/2009, -2/+71i miss Funcoland :'(
- bixby1, on 11/05/2009, -1/+63I've gone to GameStop too many times. There are regrets...
- onimusha115, on 11/05/2009, -1/+60Video game stores just aren't what they used to be. I used to go to EB games all the time at my local mall. It was usually pretty easy to find a good selection of older games, and trade in values were actually reasonable. Now that Gamestop runs the show its all gone down hill. The game selection is terrible, all I can find is either games that just came out, or a whole slew of horrible games, or stacks of the last generation of sports titles. Trade in values are horrible, its to the point now that its just more worthwhile to let a game sit on my shelf for the off chance that I may want to play it in the future than to take their meager store credit for it. I think thats why its so hard to find decent titles that came out a year or two ago, no one is bothering to trade them in. The only way to find an older decent game now is to hope it makes a re-release as a greatest hits game. The stores are always so small and cramped too, its hard to just browse.
Online is the way to go now. I can order a game from newegg or amazon and get it shipped for free and have it arrive either on the day of release or shortly after. The best part is if your buying a game that is already out you can read a bunch of reviews to figure out if its worth your 60 bucks or not. Going to a video game store was only worth it when I could find an older gem at a good price, or actually get a good trade in on my used games. Now that they took that away there is no point in going. - Van3ck, on 11/06/2009, -0/+41I had the same problem multiple times. I asked how can they garuntee me that this "new game" that has been opened by them and pulled out of a drawer in an envelope and re-boxed right in front me, has a good CD key when I get home and try to register it to play?
Their only argument each time was "Well if you would have pre-ordered, you would be guaranteed a sealed copy". - AiR1890, on 11/06/2009, -1/+42Has anyone ever noticed how weird all the game stops smell? They all just have this weird smell, it is not a bad smell, but not a good smell either. It is just a weird smell, and the employees are always all the same, hipster types, and guys that look like they haven't shaved or showered in weeks, and they always have the same voices too, every game stop has a guy that just has that deepish voice, and that one guy that doesn't seem to know what hes doing, and that one guy with the longer hair, who looks like hes 12.
- austro, on 11/06/2009, -4/+45Firstly: Ugh, seriously? You're really excited to broadcast the whole, 'I'm a girl gamer!' thing, aren't you? Trust me, sweetie-pie, you're not that special.
Secondly: I work in a video games store. Almost every single week, we get at least one female trouncing in, talking as LOUDLY as possible about how 'awkward' it is because she's a 'girl gamer'. Oh my God, shut up. No one gives a damn, and if you weren't shouting at the top of your lungs, no one would notice you. You and your ilk are just incredibly determined to blame every possible event, reaction and mannerism on "IT'S BECAUSE I'M A GIRL AND A GAMER OMG :( LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME". That unfortunate clerk was just trying to push those items because it's his damned job, not because you're a 'stupid girl'. I hate it when I get those females who come in, so fueled by their self-righteous 'gamer gurrl' rage, that they glare at me accusingly the second I open my mouth.
Digg me down, whatever, I friggin' needed that vent. - Apex3, on 11/05/2009, -7/+45I've been buying games at Gamestop since I was 10, I've never had a problem with them in any way...I'm gonna have to blame this one on the towns you live in. I've always gotten new games that were sealed from the company, used games in envelopes before purchase, they may ask if I want to preorder anything, but they don't push it on me, they just ask once.
- qiaohua, on 11/05/2009, -2/+40Good advice, especially with Black Friday coming up.
- Crosshare, on 11/06/2009, -2/+39Vent with the Reply button.
- bcz26, on 11/05/2009, -2/+37They forgot to mention to never trade in any game, this will cause a terrible lost of money on your side.
- miaken, on 11/06/2009, -8/+40I hate GameStop. I'm a girl gamer so every time I go there (mostly due to laziness, it's within walking distance), they assume I'm buying for a boyfriend or don't acknowledge my presence at all. Then, like I'm stupid, try to sell me the "Edge Card". After I told a clerk I didn't want the Game Informer subscription, he said, "well, I can give you the card for 14.99 and not set up a subscription." I just looked at him and said no. Seriously? I know they probably don't get many females in there who actually know what the hell is going on but damn...
- LBUCHA, on 11/05/2009, -2/+34i walk right past, go home, and order online. The one in my mall when I was a kid smelled funky.
- mizusajt, on 11/05/2009, -4/+36I give Gamestop the finger every time I pass by.
- bullsfan03, on 11/05/2009, -0/+30Hey there! I see you bought a Nintendo DS game! The DSi comes out in 2 weeks! Want to pre-order it? You just need to pay 10$ in advance! And if you trade in your old DS, you can get 10$ off of your new DSi!
/bastard scheme. - Wargasmic, on 11/06/2009, -0/+28Then they will repackage it as a new game for $30.
- rohcky, on 11/06/2009, -5/+32I love the fact that an anti-GameStop elitist made a comic ragging on elitist nerds. The hypocrisy tickles me.
- MrFisty, on 11/06/2009, -0/+26When I used to shop there I would insist on a factory-sealed copy. They'd always give me grief and say "but it is new", but I'd just say it was for a gift for someone else and I didn't want one with scuffs all over it or the Xbox sticker split. They'd usually oblige.
Call me anal, but when I buy something "new" then the right to wreck it is mine, not someone else's. Same reason I don't buy books from Borders. Like Gamestop their stock is always scuffed and trashed and, again like Gamestop, always more expensive. - woofers07, on 11/06/2009, -2/+28My girlfriend bought me Mass Effect a couple years ago for Christmas from GameStop, was so excited to play it, had the whole night already devoted to it. Opened it and the the case was empty, apparently that "happens all the time".
- Kerplunk5975, on 11/05/2009, -1/+25So if we're all agreeing that gamestop sucks then why did you bury it
- itstomcat, on 11/05/2009, -1/+23As a kid growing up in the 90's.. it always amazed me how trashed every demo kiosk was for practically every system in nearly every electronics department. Target.. Wal-Mart.. EBX (the EB Games outlet in my city). ***** broken reset buttons, broken controllers, even a BROKEN SYSTEM still on display with the screen buzzing green or some other ***** staying that way forever.
- TheVirus, on 11/06/2009, -1/+23Since you said 'for a boyfriend' and not 'for my boyfriend', is it safe to assume you're single? If so, call me.
- endigger2, on 11/05/2009, -1/+22I have a good friend that works at Gamestop and based on his stories, all of these complaints seem reasonable.
- teb8f, on 11/05/2009, -2/+21Dugg for truth
- master69better, on 11/06/2009, -0/+19Theres an ATT store next to mine. Two birds, uno stono
- DouglasRClark, on 11/05/2009, -2/+20They did it all the way back when the store was called Babbages... I used to re-seal Dreamcast games with heat guns and shrink wrap. Ours was the only store that couldnt take them home and play them (cause a bunch of people stole a lot), but I know all the other stores did...
I remember thinking how shady it was... such BS. WE REPACKAGED SNES GAMES...
...I mean COME ON! - jc7012, on 11/06/2009, -0/+17Yea, the guy with the $60 video game wants to play a used one COME ON!
- casspa, on 11/05/2009, -1/+18We used to have 3 in this neighborhood, slowly but surely they're all closing down....
- neuroticfish, on 11/06/2009, -2/+19Not necessarily true. Employees are allowed to "borrow" new games.
- mattyboy555, on 11/05/2009, -0/+17Here in Canada, I NEVER seen a old game repackaged as a new game.
- theonlywizdum, on 11/06/2009, -3/+19Thats how most stores do it (except walmart and best buy). It's far to easy to steal a game, so they took the idea from movie rental places, keep the empty boxes on the shelves, and the games in cases behind the counter.
- Guvante, on 11/06/2009, -0/+16That is because they are measured on how many of them they sell. This then determines what priority they are for raises and hours.
Not really the clerks fault, they are just trying to get by.
Realistically pre-orders aren't all that bad anyway, unless the game is coming out in a year+ or you don't know which store you will go to on release day, they are win-sortawin (You get a guaranteed copy but that generally doesn't matter) - ultraseamus, on 11/05/2009, -0/+15Yeah, that is probably the worst thing they do. I had a roommate who worked there, and he would tell me about all the crap they do. I avoid that store at all costs, which is easy to do, but it sure is annoying how many exclusive bonus content offers they keep having.
- jdeane, on 11/05/2009, -1/+15I thought I was the only one with the bad GS experiences.
BTW, the part about the clerk trying to sell magazine subscriptions/preorders is so true. Now that I think about, it's happened every time I've made a purchase there. - kolop1, on 11/05/2009, -2/+16Yes, digital distribution is a great idea. I can't take games to my friends house and I can't eBay them when I am done.
- benroy, on 11/06/2009, -3/+17The good old Nuremberg Defense, "I was just following orders!"
- miaken, on 11/06/2009, -0/+13And to think, I thought it was just the GameStops in my city...
- JinxCrow, on 11/06/2009, -0/+13It's ok I hate girls who want special treatment too, especially when they think they are some kind of nerd treasure.
- rolls20s, on 11/06/2009, -1/+14I miss Rhino Video games so much. When it was bought by Blockbuster, I was worried, but they kept it exactly the same. But then Blockbuster sold it to GameStop, and they just assimilated it. Rhino used to keep rare and vintage mint-condition games behind locked plexi (the kind of games that are going for $100+ on ebay now). When GameStop bought it, they just chucked all of those games into bins and slapped super cheap stickers on them. Some people got really good deals, and most probably don't even know what they had.
- gloopofdoom, on 11/06/2009, -0/+12I agree with Crosshare. But I agree with you more! The self righteous girl gamers are the worst. No, I take that back, the birthday present shopping mom is the worst. "Do you think my daughter would like this? She's turning 4." How the ***** are we supposed to know! She's your damn daughter.
- Ozzimo, on 11/06/2009, -1/+13I tried to give them crap once. If it's open how can it be new? And how the hell can you sell an open copy for the same price as an unopened one? I realize I was only kicking a man when he's down (he's working at Gamestop after all) but it made me feel a bit better at least.
- Rainemaker, on 11/06/2009, -0/+12In Florida it is illegal.
- Snakedal337, on 11/06/2009, -1/+13We have a place called The Exchange here in northeast ohio, their employees are all pretty cool and have some good prices on used games. I was able to get Resistance 1 & 2 for $40.
Play-and-Trade just opened up and they actually sell the rip off systems that can play all the old Nintendo cartridges, so I had to pick one of those up. And you can demo any game in the store for however long you want. They actually set me up on a big screen behind the counter when the kiosks were all in use to demo tekken 6.
I guess what i'm getting at is ***** GAMESTOP. - Vulphaestion, on 11/06/2009, -1/+13They do it, anyway.
