- hokeywebb22, on 01/22/2008, -2/+247I used to go to GameSpot a few times a week. I haven't been there since this has happened.
- SlackerCS, on 01/22/2008, -12/+99I never used to go to Gamespot. Since this happened, I go there four or five times a day. I click on all their ads too.
- muckhole, on 01/22/2008, -2/+64Yep. Haven't gone back since. I enjoyed the article immensely.
- Kryfton, on 01/22/2008, -1/+56I used to read various reviews from there. No longer shall I ever do it.
- Oomsoup, on 01/22/2008, -1/+53Wonderful article, thank you. This whole fiasco has indeed made me question every review I see.
Except Yahtzee of course. :) - jaychuck, on 01/22/2008, -2/+43This was a very epic article, Sam. It's cool to see your opinion on the matter, as a fellow editor for an online journalistic, gaming community.
- shawgo, on 01/22/2008, -3/+33Neither have I. I used to have a total access account at gamespot, but I canceled it and said good bye.
- dahuf, on 01/22/2008, -1/+29I'm dying to see traffic data. At first it was hard to kick GameSpot, but i haven't been back since.
- harrisbradley, on 01/22/2008, -2/+28The only thing for them to do is hire Gerstmann back, and act like Fox did when it let Family Guy back on the air. Let Gerst rip whoever he wants a new *****. Other than that I won't visit the site... EVER.
- unrealmp3, on 01/22/2008, -1/+24***** Kane and Lynch
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -0/+21People who use the Alexa toolbar are probably people who couldn't care less about them being biased, havn't even heard of it, or don't realise how much of a big deal it was. It's pretty much spyware.
- driftwood07, on 01/22/2008, -1/+20i see what you did there
- HiKevinRose, on 01/22/2008, -0/+18I wish a had an account with them/frequented their site so that my boycotting their site would actually mean anything...
- jaychuck, on 01/22/2008, -10/+28On that note, whatever it takes to even THINK about paying for extra content on ANY internet site for what is basically free anywhere else is beyond me...
- iiBeLiEvE, on 01/22/2008, -1/+19"Eidos freaked. GameSpot caved. Internet exploded."
- TheZorch, on 01/22/2008, -2/+18My browser shall never be dirtied with their website ever again. Gamespot wasn't the do-all, end-all site for games, there are and will be better sites. They did this to themselves.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -1/+17No.
- dansmeek, on 01/22/2008, -1/+16when GG (gerst-gate) first happened, i thought it would be a bunch of kids protesting and whining for a few days, and then we'd all forget about it. and boy did i think wrong. and - as a person who loves videogames and depends on reviews and the gaming community - it really made feel that this community is something special. it doesn't matter whether gamespot gets the same traffic today as it did months ago. the fact of the matter is, people aren't going to say "well the game XXX got a Y.Y from gamespot, so IGN/1up/etc is obviously biased."
This gamespot gave metal gear solid an 8.5 back in the day. It drove me crazy to see a site that refused to give high scores. But now that it's gone I want it back. Anyway, the fact of the matter is that with a community as strong as this, it doesn't matter what these paid-sites do.... the community will always dictate what *really* is a good game and what really sucks. In fact, it already has. I don't see anyone saying "Halo is GOTY" despite nearly every major publication (gamespot included) giving this hyped-overrated game a near-perfect score.
So in the end, this GG has only reaffirmed just how strong the gaming community is. - inactive, on 01/22/2008, -1/+15I unsubscribed from the Hotspot podcast the day it happened.
Not only as a protest, but because I simply dont want to listen to it if Jeff isnt on it. - kcchan1, on 01/22/2008, -1/+14You'd think so, but they're not.
Gamespot is a CNET company, and Gamestop is...(get this)... a publicly trading company! - phazon88, on 01/22/2008, -0/+13I just use Metacritic.
- CursorTN, on 01/22/2008, -1/+13Well done, mate. Time to get some sunshine on this revolting development. Let's hope this is the first of many stories by reputable media outlets and that the truth finally comes out.
- Isaac1231239, on 01/22/2008, -4/+16O RLY
- Dymphna, on 01/22/2008, -1/+13You should question reviews anyway, all review have to be taken with a grain of salt.
Reviewers all around panned Lair, and I hate it too. However, a friend of mine plays it constantly and adores it. Everyone has different tastes, you can't trust any website to tell you what you'll like about anything.
It just helps give you an idea, and see if the problems they had are ones you may or may not share. - hendzen, on 01/22/2008, -0/+12Alexa will only show long term trends. Over the next year or so we might see a drop in gamespot rankings.
- smiyamoto, on 01/22/2008, -0/+11I was never convinced that we had the whole story. But it did have an affect on me. I started reviewing games myself shortly after reading about the incident.
- Oomsoup, on 01/22/2008, -0/+10Of course! I had never before really thought reviewers might be lying because they were getting advertising money though.
- AgoodChap, on 01/22/2008, -0/+10NASDAQ: CNET and NYSE: GME
- lordwow, on 01/22/2008, -2/+12Arguably, the most important gaming related editorial of this decade. A must read.
- VeganG, on 01/22/2008, -4/+13Ad-free experiences and faster downloads = Ad-Block and Bit Torrent
- YoctoYotta, on 01/22/2008, -1/+10Ad-free experiences and faster downloads are a luxury worth paying for in my opinion. I wish 1UP offered the same thing. ***** IGN, those *****, they STILL serve you ads even when you pay for a membership. Anyhow, I also canceled my total access subscription with Gamespot. I feel bad for the good editorial staff still there. CNET lopped off their heads.
- dood, on 01/22/2008, -2/+11Check out Alexa. Not even a dent. Tracks evenly with ign.com and stomps 1up.com. Of course, this is just Alexa.
- SniperZero, on 01/22/2008, -2/+11YEAH ***** GAMESPOT!!!
- SKick, on 01/22/2008, -0/+9It was hard enough to keep listening after Rich left, for me. Then with Jeff's removal, I couldn't justify the wasted space on my iPod.
- dsmx, on 01/22/2008, -0/+9I used to think gamespot was a brilliant site to go to for reviews, then 3 things happened which stopped me from ever going there again. The first one was when they changed the review system instantly you could no longer see where the score came from which on it's own wasn't to bad. Then came the infamous ratchet and clank review which was stupidly lower than every other website review out there. The Jeff got fired and his review was taken off and that was the final straw.
When Jeff was fired it then dawned on me why the review system was changed it was so they could tweak the score easily without justifying why it got a particular score. - sleeknerve, on 01/22/2008, -0/+8its why he got fired thats the bigger issue
- boombume, on 01/22/2008, -0/+8Im also avoiding gamespot, and I dont really miss it as much as I thought i would.
- mikeyeah, on 01/22/2008, -2/+10Hey, Josh Larson, Steve Colvin, and Eidos! On behalf of the gaming community I would like to tell you all to go ***** yourselves.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go delete Gamespot from my bookmarks. - jaychuck, on 01/22/2008, -1/+9Gamespot is the harshest? Have you even seen what 1UP gave Assassin's Creed?? I doubt Gamespot has been blackballed by anyone other than its own users.
- chedonline, on 01/22/2008, -1/+9Same here. Ign.com and 1up.com have been all I needed. I've grown quite fond of them too.
- Zlorp, on 01/22/2008, -4/+12i won a game from gamespot once. back in the late 90's when AOL was the rage.
- Dymphna, on 01/22/2008, -0/+8Not up to Gamespot, so I don't see that happening
- dmcintosh22, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8My internet connection could never handle all of the ads at Gamespot so I quit going there awhile ago.
- bxblox, on 01/22/2008, -0/+8i did too, even though i never entered the 'sweepstakes' for it a box of pc games showed up. my name was on the box so i asked no questions...
- shiftless, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8Gamespot went downhill right after their incredibly biased articles about Wii games. I haven't stopped using their site completely, but I have lost complete and total interest in their reviews.
- kmalik, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8bravo.
- PhilMoskowitz, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8I deleted my link to Gamespot after this ***** happened. I haven't been back. Hopefully everyone will hear what happened and keep away from those shilling douchebags.
- grumbel, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6While at account canceling, does anybody know how I can cancel a regular non-pay Gamespot account?
- Synthesize, on 01/22/2008, -2/+8I usually visit IGN, Gamespot and Metacritic for reviews. I no longer visit or trust Gamespot's reviews after this incident. ***** that. If the gaming industry is heading into that direction, I would never support it.
- ours, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6Worse part is that it could have been good if they had cared to finish developing the damn game. And these guys made Hitman? Hard to believe.
