For the first time there is a legitimate reason for not linking directly to the source... - Shatterpulse, on 12/05/2007, -6/+64"contrary to widespread and unproven reports, his exit was not a result of pressure from an advertiser."
they did it for the lolz
/sarcasm - piper999, on 12/05/2007, -3/+60They're lying. Next.
- Dustin00, on 12/05/2007, -2/+35Proposed: Jeff's firing was just a coincidence.
Facts:
1. Re-edit the text to alter "tone" of review
2. Took down just one of his video reviews (damn things are so hard to spot edit!)
3. Used PREVIEW quotes instead of review quotes for marketing.
The facts add up to the proposed statement being COMPLETE AND TOTAL LIES. - Nudar, on 12/05/2007, -0/+31They sure took their sweet time making this announcement.
- Rikushix, on 12/05/2007, -3/+23All I have to say is, for the most part, it DOES look fishy, and a lot of the already small amount of stuff they're allowed to reveal is just legal mumbo jumbo - However, there is NO official confirmation from ANYWHERE that his firing was due to pressure from Eidos. I'm trying my hardest to jump to conclusions (and it is hard, believe me, considering the evidence against them) - don't fall trap to getting riled up in the internet frenzy. There's been a lot of speculation that it was simply Gerstman rubbing the wrong way against that suit Josh Larson. Let's just see how this thing unfolds.
- PaulLewis, on 12/05/2007, -1/+20And I'm the Queen of England.
- aelias, on 12/05/2007, -3/+16We can't tell you why he was was fired, but we can say it's not what everyone and their ***** mother thinks it is.
This ***** should work for the Bush administration. - Darthyoshiboy, on 12/05/2007, -1/+11If everything is on the up and up as they (Gamespot) claim, they why is Jeff not allowed to comment on the terms of his departure?
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/01/latest-developme ...
I mean if this is all as well as Gamespot would like us to believe, they'd not tie his hands in stating why he was ***** canned. If he's under an NDA they could just as easily remove him from it's terms and let the world know why he was canned. - Sherazard, on 12/05/2007, -0/+10gollum that you?
- 5xSTUN, on 12/05/2007, -0/+8In the 1941 film Citizen Kane, the title character fires one of his closest friends from his newspaper for writing a bad review of his wife's performance at the opera that night. The scene marks the turn of Charles Foster Kane to the Dark Side. This gamespot thing reminds me of that for some reason.
- Namingway, on 12/05/2007, -0/+8Umm... they won't say why because... wait for it....wait for it....
They haven't thought of another reason that makes sense yet! - danc4498, on 12/05/2007, -2/+9Or skirting the truth. I don't think he was fired due to pressure from advetisers, rather he was fired because they pulled the ads. Its all semantics...
- deadbaby, on 12/05/2007, -3/+10I think if you read some Gamespot reviews it's pretty obvious what they are doing so most people are inclined to believe the worst about them.
- fredkreuger, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7"I'm trying my hardest to jump to conclusions"
I hear there's a mat for that. - epilonious, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7I dunno. I have this sneaking suspicion that it was Horse Porn at work or something... and just the worst-timed firing ever.
- aboyd, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6In this case, shinythingy, we have more to go on, and that helps diggers to discern the truth. For example, they say it had nothing to do with the review, yet after they fired him they removed his video review of the game. They didn't remove his other reviews. If they have no problem with his video review, why is it gone?
- Rikushix, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5NOT* to jump to conclusions. Typo. Sorry.
- Crimsoneer, on 12/05/2007, -6/+10People, this guy has a point...some rumour floating around the net isn't that reliable..
- demonsnake69, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4A rumor isn't reliable, but we're not going to get the real truth by accepting this official statement either. Our best bet is to continue to bombard Gamespot/Cnet with the rumor until they can't take it anymore and spill the beans.
- Sairgem, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4That hurt, please stop trying to be funny.
- Herv3, on 12/05/2007, -1/+5Is there anyone stupid enough to believe this?
- Birdoftruth, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4they gots to saveses face somehows
- Dustin00, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3D'oh! Another:
4. Forcing Jeff into silence at the end of his employment is nothing by PR ass-coverage. It is only used by companies trying to hide something. - Nextrix, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3Kane & Lynch < ET ;P
- ShugNinx21, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2I don't see what that will do. Say they do come out with the truth of why he was fired and it wasn't because of the review. Will it calm down the internet frenzy? Hell no, everyone who thinks he was fired for the review will just say that Gamespot is lying and covering up the truth.
The only thing that will resolve this internet craze is if Gamespot says they fired him for the review no matter if it were true or false. And that of course will only resolve it for the people who have complete faith in an internet rumors. - nigh7dagger, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Then most of the users of Digg would have a moral dillema on their hands.
- Braingoo, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Because its one of the best movies ever made, the ones these days are crap. Respect the classics man.
- ShawnShekari, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3Too late already canceled gamespot subscription, oh well it really had gone to crap the past couple years anyway.
- absurdist, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Da da, da da da dot,
I am the Queen of England,
I like to sing and dance,
And if you don't believe me
I will punch you in the pants. - kingUssop, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Not to mention there's been plenty of insider leaks to credible gaming news outlets. To not believe the whole thing stinks at this point is to be in denial.
- aargh01, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
- hockey, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3At this point ultimately it doesn't matter what the real reason is. Regardless of rather he was fired over his review or not it doesn't matter. The public has made up its collective mind and no statement official or otherwise will change that nor will it quell the rage (see above comments for reference). At this point Jeff himself could make a statement telling us the real reason he's no longer with GameSpot and if it was contrary to public opinion people would not believe him.
At the end of the day a man lost his job which always sucks. Regardless though I don't think that he will be out of work long which is a good thing. - shinythingy, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2You know as much as me. Perhaps he was in thin ice, maybe he was acting like a dick towards his superiors, maybe he was using company computers for ***** he shouldn't have, maybe he was a sexist bastard. I don't know neither do you, but by all means jump on the bandwagon if you want if only for the chance to say i knew thats why they fired him if it is true.
- Birdoftruth, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1No it's me, the janitor from Futurama.
- ericrous, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1If it was just a problem with his video review, then why did they edit the written review too?
- shinythingy, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1No it isn't obvious. It looks like it and it wouldn't shock anybody if it was true but you or i have no proof. You are just believing a rumour
- F1R3DUP, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Why doesn't Gerstmann sue Gamespot (CNET) for wrongful termination?
- bubba9999, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2this would have a little more credibility if they said it the day it happened instead of slogging though 4 days worth of PR hell.
- ericrous, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1It's not a "rumor" that they just fired a respected 10-year veteran editor right after he gave a negative review to a game from a major advertiser. It's not a "rumor" that they removed and edited said review immediately afterwards.
Doesn't take a genius to see what's going on here. - juniorb, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2It's getting publicity because it is blatant disregard for journalistic ethics, and it represents a frightening level of control over objective opinion and the right to honest exchange of information.
- lordmetroid, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2If you are the queen, I would then have to be the king!
- DestroyFascism, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1GameSpot denies Gerstmann's firing was due to adv pressure
=
*****! - anthonydt86, on 12/05/2007, -2/+3If they can't release any details on the firing, why can they tell us that it wasn't over an ad issue? That sounds like a pretty big detail to me.
- mithrasinvictus, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2What else could they have said? Would you say you fired the guy because the advertisers went nuts?
- Namingway, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1not true, if Jeff came out & said... hea guys I quit because I got sick of all the bs. Lay off them they are still cool...
Then people would likely believe him & go back to the site as if nothing ever happened.
But the fact that he hasn't came out & said exactly that, means that odds are everyone was right the first time.
For years people have suspected that gs & others hedge their reviews to cater to their advertisers & all it takes is one time for a company to lose their credibility & integrity for them to start the wanning process I would like to term IGNsyndrome.
***** gamespot, ***** them forever... I will never visit their site again. Not only because of this but the fact that for too long they have been treated as an authority on video games. Selling out has been obvious for many years. Just as I stopped going to IGN back in 2001 I will stop going to GS in 2007. They lost their integrity & credibility & that is a permanent thing. - WoollyMittens, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Gamespot has changed the offending review to make it more favourable.
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/05/comparison-shows ...
That should be proof enough. - yizuman, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Here's Jeff's MySpace, he's also a member of 3 different bands, the current one is the Midnight Brown http://www.midnightbrown.com/
Send Jeff your support! - WoollyMittens, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Whatever reason their PR department comes up with, isn't going to be good enough to undo all the bad publicity this has given both Eidos and Gamespot. In fact, saying advertisement had nothing to do with it will sound completely absurd.
An overheated naive manager was trying to create a more beneficial review-culture for advertisers. That much is obvious. - ericrous, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1So cynical. Don't you realize it was just a coincidence that he just happened to be fired right after a major company threatened to pull its ads from the site after he gave their game a bad review?
I can't see how those things could POSSIBLY be related. -
