- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Good list and bonus diggs for Eternal Darkness (the best game nobody played)
Other games for the list:
Soul Calibur 2 - The only fighting game more perfect is the original Dreamcast SC
TimeSplitters 2 - The closest thing to Goldeneye on the Cube
Star Wars Rogue Leader - Best Star Wars Game Ever - Wildthing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35@ foxhaze: "Don't give me this *****... if you don't have these games already, don't waste your time. There's a PS3 waiting for you."
Actually, there isn't... - tabledesk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I want HowStuffWorks to break down the Wii's loading mechanism. It's the only slot-loading drive I've ever seen with the ability to accept smaller discs.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Congratulations, you win the "biggest ***** on the internet" award.
Go celebrate your win by jumping off a bridge. - sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20The best part is, most of these games can be purchased at Gamestop for about $5-$10 a piece.
Reminder: If you do start buying gamecube games, buy a memory card for it. I had no idea the Wii couldn't store GameCube game data until I bought RE4/Wind Waker and tried to save a game. I had to score one from Gamestop for like $15, but it's worth it I suppose.
You'd think Nintendo would've allowed the SD card to be used for storing GC saves, but apparently not. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Antialias: I can only assume you're posting this to try to ***** up as many Macs as possible?
- mediamaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Beyond Good & Evil, also a great game and on GC
- Araya213, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Oh man i'm with that, Eternal Darkness was AMAZING. To this day it's the only game that blew my mind completely. I remember one time my insanity meter went up and the game acted like it was deleting my save, that actually had me up off the couch and yelling at the console.
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12SBM is the BEST party game.
- rednalb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12My fiance has a Honda Element that is slot loading, and we can put the mini 80 mm discs in there.
- Crashwithuhk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I actually just started looking at some GC titles today to pass time until a few more Wii titles come out. I think Strikers should be on that list.
- LMN8R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10When Sony has stuff worth talking about, people will talk about Sony.
- webbsk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10While I agree with you in principle, it's not quite the same. Many people who are buying the Wii did not own GCs. They probably owned PS2s. So this is a chance for them to explore a whole bunch of games that were only released on the GC that they never would have gotten the chance to play before. And the article and other poster in this thread are correct - there was a bunch of good ones. Especially at dirt cheap prices, how can you go wrong?
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Eternal Darkness was indeed phenomenal. Best horror genre game ever, in my opinion. The first time the video went funky, I was ready to call Sony on my TV warranty.
Surprised Pikmin and Viewtiful Joe didn't make the list. - CritterNYC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Don't forget Metroid, which I just bought used for $3.99.
- CBanga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11My MacBook slot loader can DEFINITELY not take small disks. I tried it once with this small disc that had drivers for a external hard drive I bought. It was a bitch to remove.
- n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I am going to find a copy of Eternal Darkness, thanks for the heads up. I have been looking ofr something "different" to play for a while now.
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Somebody at work put a small disk in their iMac once. I walked in on them banging their Mac on the table trying to get the disk to fall out.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I have been wanting to pick up melee, I never owned a gamecube.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I tried to chase the flies away from my TV =]
There's going to be a sequel (or two) apparently:
http://www.digg.com/gaming_news/A_Sequel_For_Eternal_Darkness - skoles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11This is missing the Viewtiful Joe series.
- Hoffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Eternal Darkness was a great game. I played through it 3 times in a row to do all three color things. I have thought about playing it again since it has been so long.
- TheWire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Skies of Arcadia. I am definitely re-buying that. Think the open seas but flying... Skyships, damn I love that game.
- MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If this were slashdot, you just got modded "-23, Painful truth that fanboys don't want to hear and makes them cry."
This is why you don't buy consoles when they come out. You pay $250 and get to play gamecube games. I buy consoles a year or so after launch, save at least $100, and actually have games available.
Note this is 10x as stupid with the PS3 due to its price. - Donerkebab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Unless you really like 2d platformers, don't bother with Viewtiful. It is cool, but extremely difficult.
- DownIsTheNewUp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I still need to get RE4, and I have RE1 for GC, but haven't played it, and I barely got started on Wind Waker. If there's a long wait between Zelda and Mario Galaxy, I'll have to get reacquainted with these cube games.
- russizm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I second ED... too bad sales weren't good enough for a sequel. My girlfriend liked the game so much she beat it on each ancient.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancients_(Eternal_Darkness) - CameronHigh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6RE4 is one of the greatest console games ever! Holy crap. I want to play it right now.
- esaks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5One of the best games for the GC EVER was Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. This game blew me away and was probably one of my favorite games of last gen on any system.
- JerseyTim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'd hardly call Eternal Darkness "horror action" and compare it to Resident Evil 4. It's a great game, but it's not action. It's more about the story and the breaking of the fourth wall. I loved that game.
- CameronHigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"If you bought a Wii, shouldn't you be concerned about Wii games and not old GC titles? That's like posting a Playstation 3 article and asking, "why not check out all the great PS2 titles in lieu of new PS3 games?".
Why not? Final Fantasy 12 and God of War 2 both look great.
Many people skipped purchasing a GameCube, and it isnt a bad idea to see what they missed now that they own a Wii. - tico24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The old mac portables used to do it I believe. But the new ones do not. No idea why the backtracked on that.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nope. Call Nintendo.
- agent888, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I got my little brother a copy of strikers for Christmas last year. It's great....I ended up playing it with him for hours. When I get a Wii, I will definently own Strikers
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The only last gen system I had was Gamecube, but I've been lured away with the DS for awhile. Now that I bought a Wii, I've been going back to get the Gamecube games I didn't want to buy at $49.
There must be somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 "must have" AAA titles exclusive to Gamecube. Really a ton of awesome games. - EbenieRosa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have to say an amazing game for the Gamecube was Tales of Symphonia, I keep that game, as well as Eternal Darkness and Ikaruga...
Although I now actually lately myself have been looking at Cube games...look at what Nintendo is doing, it's genious, they'll make an assload on GC games that never got to see because of lack of interest on a Gamecube, while still upping Wii sales.
Genius. - hungryJonJon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Strikers was pretty fun. Mostly because it's NOT like real soccer.
Mario Baseball also occupied many hours to achieve everything. It was just too bad it wasn't strong on the multiplayer. - EbenieRosa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's just trying to clear out last gen radiation ; nothing to see here folks :).
- maxx77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Here here! I second, third, whatever, to Eternal Darkness being great. I take the opportunity to post about it every chance the opportunity arises. Too many people have overlooked this cult classic. It's a shame (travesty!) that it didn't sell more copies. Same with Beyond Good & Evil. Two of the best games from the last console generation, and both had abysmal sales. When the summer videogame slump hits next year, those two games are high on my list to play through again.
I think both games did poorly as a result of there not being a good way to market either. Most people equate Eternal Darkness with Resident Evil (they couldn't be more different), and Beyond Good & Evil is... well, "isn't that the game with that green haired chick?" The general public had no clue. - booticon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I just bought Viewtiful Joe used at Gamestop for $6.99. What a great game.
- Schmecky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And it's on eBay. For only $2,000.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"That's like posting a Playstation 3 article and asking, 'why not check out all the great PS2 titles in lieu of new PS3 games?'"
Because they won't play on it? - dancallahan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you've don't have it on any system, though, it's better to play the GCN one than not at all. SSX 3 was phenomenal. On Tour made me such a sad panda in comparison.
- Crashwithuhk, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11Yup. It's extremely fun easy to just pick up and start playing. That and most of the rules that making soccer boring don't apply.
- gmurray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah that's basically why I wrote this little article. I am going to get a 360 just for gears of war.
- greensky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lego Star Wars II is a great title for the GameCube as well.
- Rayor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I loved Viewtiful Joe. It was so easy to just pick up, play, and get into.
It kinda reminded me of another game that I like, Gun Grave.
It's relaxing every once and a while to play a game with a simple game mechanic and gameplay style that is challenging. - HAKdragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3...remembering that the GC has 3 shoulder buttons. I don't know how may moves they would have dropped because they GC has one less shoulder button than the PS2.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why not buy the rumbling MadKatz wireless GCN controllers? They work fine if you don't mind feeding them batteries.
- vawksel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am honestly a bit disappointed with the Wii. I got to play with it for a few hours at a friends house yesterday.
I know I'm going to get hammered for saying this, but it really did feel very gimmicky.
Now, don't get me wrong, it did make the games EASIER to play for people who arn't use to mashing arrays of buttons, but a few things I feel:
1) It's just not smart enough still. Why do I have to hold a button down to throw the ball low or high. Why do I have to hold my right remote parallel to the ground then jut it outwards to do a hook in boxing... I'd much rather it just map my hands to the hands on the screen and let me go.
2) It makes games easier to pick up and play for newbies, but I've yet to see an ounce of real power beyond this. As a "hard core gamer", I don't really see this improving my game precision, but more or less making me feel like I am doing similar activities in real life that mimic whats goin on "sort of" in the game.
Pointing at the screen for an FPS, I can see that helping, but man is that cursor jumpy.
I dunno, I guess I had bigger expectations in my head than what's actually being delivered.
Even the infamous "Wii Sports Bowling", sure it's probably the most realistic of the bunch, and sure they are susposed to be mini-game demos and not realistic, but it's all I have to judge off of right now... The bowling wasn't "that" great. (Right handed), move left, aim right, throw the ball and sweep my hand left, release... strike. I really got it down FAST and was throwing strikes quite often really quickly. Yeah it was fun, no I could never do that in real life... It seemed to be less "analog" than I would of liked, I could whip the wiimote hard to the left when releasing (for spin) or kinda soft, and it doesn't really pick up on the difference.. It was "almost" like an off-on switch, "YES the player wants ball spin ON, or NO the player wants ball spin OFF"... yuck.
.. I haven't bought anything yet next-gen. Getting anxious having waited a year now since the 360 release, I think I'm gunna pick up a 360 + Gears of War + Rainbow Six: Vegas...
I'll have to keep monitoring the Wii and see if anything comes out for it thats not a mini-game-tech-demo that really makes powerful use of these wiimotes...
(Zelda, great game, not the reason I want a Wii, I want the Wii for the Wiimote, but yet to see a Wiimote exclusive non-port game that delivers a game that can't be (within reason) made on a ps3 or 360)... -
