- Darkshine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Sorry, meant to say STARDOCK doesn't want Galactic Civilizations pirated.
- yihpin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29I think what's more interesting is the link in the post to a jpeg showing a Starforce (maker of CD content protection) forum admin purposefully linking to a pirated version of the game, possibly out of spite. Makes you wonder how far they'll go to "prove" that all games "need" anti-piracy tools...
- Nerys, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23"If they are a small company, I would at least try to add some more protection, a serial number is not enough these days.. That's me of course.."
Copy Protection has nothing to do with stopping piracy. This is an irrefutable FACT because we all know and they all know its utterly ineffective.
The purpose of copy protection is to restrict OUR rights as consumers.
Because the only ones who are going to OBEY Copy Protection are LAW ABIDING CITIZENS.
I applaud this company for realizing the pirates are going to pirate it regardless so why punish our legitimate users. I CANT STAND having to put the CD in to play a game Especially annoying because I like to pay Red Alert 2 on my tablet and it does not have a built in CD Drive. so I am forced to break the law just to play my game !
Sad Sad - good to see a compay realise that its pointless (the amount of games pirated will be compensated likely by the LACK of having to pay someone like starforce there protection money (and that is what it is)
as if to prove the point what they did on there website is proof positive of this mafia tactic ! Use our protection or else......
I can not wait until people wake up and force there employees (congressman) to OUTLAW DRM in any form.
Gonna have to go and find a copy of this game at the local gameshop...

- burnt1ce85, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19It just goes to show that Digg can sometime provide very false information. Dont get me wrong, i like digg and it's my favorite site to get tech but you cant be a noob and think everything on digg is true.
- pinsomniac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16The problem with Digg is it caters to sensationalism. It's an inherent flaw -- make the community vote on what stories matter, and you're bound to end up with some members that will make ill-informed votes.
Regardless, Digg for the following interesting tidbit: "For example, we were quite disturbed to discover that the company that makes Starforce provided a working URL to a list of pirated GalCiv II torrents. I'm not sure whether what they did was illegal or not, but it's troubling nevertheless and was totally unnecessary." - bnoble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Welcome to the pseudo-moderated internet, dude.
- eppler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"Copy Protection has nothing to do with stopping piracy. This is an irrefutable FACT because we all know and they all know its utterly ineffective."
Exactly. When I was in the software dev. business selling my security software, the only 'protection' I used was a serial number. After just *one week* (or less) the algorithm was cracked, and a keygen was released. The next update I changed the algorithm, and of course a new keygen was released. It was creating problems for consumers (and me) because they had to get new serial numbers on each release. Finally, I realized that pirates will be pirates, and that I needed to just keep the same scheme in each update. It didn't hurt sales. In fact, I could dedicate more time on making a quality product, and less on 'protecting' it, so sales increased. That is, until the release of Windows XP...(which made my product obsolete).

This is a good digg because many things on digg these days appear to not be 100% true and this is one of them.
Good job and Dugg. - Darkshine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17This article would have you believe so http://digg.com/gaming/Company_WANTS_its_game_pirated_

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You don't need to have your CD in the drive to play :).
NO cd-key.
No nothing.
I downloaded the game, liked it, Bought it. And now I have my un-opened box sitting next to me while I have the game alt tabbed. :)
Stardock! - bnoble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Sensationalism, exactly. This site _so_ thrives on rumors and faked photos, it's no wonder that it's so often looked at as the chromosome-deficient younger sibling of Slashdot. On the bright side, I'm glad that the comment threshold and nesting are in place now, makes slightly more intelligent discussion possible.
- 06metzp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Don't forget to tag the original story - http://www.digg.com/gaming/Company_WANTS_its_game_pirated_ - as "inaccurate" to get it off the main page and prevent user misinformation.
- cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7overall these guys have the right idea.. its a great game too.. support em, go out and buy things you enjoy .. its the only way they can continue to make great games
- mrivorey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Cheers to them for having the courage to allow reasonable use... and then standing up for themselves when someone misinterprets that.
- SirSid, on 05/27/2009, -2/+7Im going to go buy the game because I want to support their cause. Go them and I hope they become sucessful as to be an example to the rest of the world. I hope your watching EA
- mentor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's a sad state of affairs when an author doesn't put DRM on their work, and people assume they want it to be pirated.
(I'm fairly sure this is where I wanted my comment to be) - copernic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I just bought a copy at Wal Mart for $39.86, and expect to be busy for the next several hours.
- butlershouse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This site thrives on sensationalist ... hang on a second ... have you met the editors ? if not then go look in the mirror ! if this site thrives on sensationalism it is only because the readers ( and subsequenty the voters ) choose to promote one article over another that "sensationalist" articles thrive. There is no one to blame here this is classic democracy in action. You all scream when someone takes charge but does nothing you are happy with . Then you shout and start a hue and cry when "we the people" take over and things dont go your way. Theres a pattern in this. Things are not what make people happy but im glad the comments system now supports diggs and allows me to set the score. Then again the Digg system is in this comment already established as fallible. But as Churchill once said
"It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried." - AeroSquid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think i'll buy this game on general principle.
- xNaquada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ill copy my response here, and digg the newspost this time
(cp from http://digg.com/gaming/Company_WANTS_its_game_pirated_#c1202516 )
I kid you not, I was deciding wether to get this game, and I actually bought this after I learnt that there is no stupid copy protection.
Copy protection is quite useless now-adays when you think about it. The only real protection there is, is a Cdkeybased-Multiplayer game....and even then there are private servers.
But to copyprotect a single player game is useless.
This game truly is awesome (Check gamespot/gamespy/ign/firing squad) scored 90% or more on all, and is more addictive than CIV 4 (maybe because I love sci-fi)
Gotta digg this game, but I wont digg this "diggpost" because I dont think the original author made sense. Still I thought it would be good to post my 2 cents in here.... if oyur considering buying this game, you will NOT be disappointed... theres already been 2 patches which both fix stuff, AND add content
Stardock is building a very positive rep image in my mind for supporting games (think blizzard like (Starcraft), NOT EA like (ZH,generals, bfme)
Glad someone fixed the news.
ALSO LOOK @ WHat Starforce did.... Quote from the galciv2 website @ http://forums.galciv2.com/?ForumID=161&AID=106741

Dont worry stardock, you earnt yourself a customer!
digg - terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Piracy or not, a *demo* would really help me decide if it's worth buying.
- theYevvin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yes, but you see how fast the digg mind can correct for misinformation. How long would it have taken a traditional media outlet to correct this, if ever.
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5better yet, people who digg the other article should undigg it.. you know, from the user profile.
- JustEvk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I ended up spending $45 for a legal copy. It's a lot like the original, if anyone here played it. I didn't find the game downloading system they have to be as annoying as driving to a store to buy a copy, anyway. Now if I can figure out why my empire split in half in a civil war when I had ~68% approval rating.
- ubergmr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I can not explain how much I respect this company.
- xNaquada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://games.slashdot.org/games/06/03/11/2049230.shtml
Slashdot coverage of the story as well.
Heres the post on the Starforce Forums that has Starforce reps bashing it.

Sorry, the edit timer ran out! - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7You commented to say it's not worth commenting on?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The only thing I could find that was untrue about the original digg was that the title claimed they ant people to pirate it. I'm not sure where they came up with that idea. Sounds like someone just wanting to be sensational. But that you can install on multiple machines without re-entering your stuff IS true (I run it on two different machines, but only one is ever being used at a time by me).
Also, you don't have to find a copy of the game at a store. You can just go to stardock and download it directly. - cheeze69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bought GC2 after noticing that the upcoming Space Rangers 2 was loaded with StarForce. I read about SR2 in the latest PC Gamer magazine and it sounded really cool. A couple other online previews said the same thing. I went to amazon and stuck it into my cart, all set to pre-order. I figured I'd read a couple more p/reviews and I'm glad I did - I found-out that SR2 has Starforce (not really all that surprising since the authors are in Russia as well). POP! Chucked that turd right out of my amazon shopping cart. They lost my money because of Starforce.
You see, I don't believe that I should have to uninstall other programs just to run another program, especially a game. I should not have to remove Visual Studio 2005 because it contains a debugger. I should not have to remove Nero because it contains virtual CD drivers.
So, it was recommended to me that I try Galactic Civ 2 because it's a similar game and comes with NO copy protection at all. Guess what? I did. They got $40 of my money (bought it at WorstBuy) which I thought is fair and I won't have to futz with cracking it or anything just so I can play it on my laptop on the road. It works with all of my installed programs just fine and it's a fantastic game.
I voted with my money. Hopefully it makes a difference. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Ok, I now know why I was confused before. Other story was nonsense.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Serial number proection is a great move by this company.
I bought this game if for no other reason I didn't have to spend a few hours cracking it.
getting a no cd crack or downloading an already cracked ISO.
Copy protection is not even a speed bump these days. Copy Protection protects nothing.
Its just costs money and pisses people off like me who buy games
but have to crack them or download cracks to play them. Hear that Electronic Arts.
EA Software bitches if you have a debugger running on your computer
it bitches if you have Virtual CD-Rom software running on your system.
It bitches if you have some network monitoring packages on your system.
I'm a developer. I use these tools for my work. If I want to play a game. I should not have to
modify my computer to do it. - bakerstreet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kind of sad that someone can just brush off making up a quote like that. If Stardock isn't going to toss a fit about it, fine, but you take a big step when you slap quotes around something and claim someone said it. An apology is nice, but do that to some companies and you might find yourself in hotter water.
This kind of thing is why I don't see digg as the next generation of all the things some people claim it to be. It's always going to be chocked full of cold fusion, perpetual motion machines, misunderstandings and misrepresentations.
It's akin to the optimism you get in the whole 'wiki' community. People suck, and they always will, and you can't really rely on them without some sort of serious accountability. - Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Lack of security for a game does not mean they want you to pirate the game, of course not. In fact, they took the road less traveled, let the gamers decide if the game is worth it, then buy it. I view it as thus because they still do not allow two keys to be active at the same time (ok you can hack this but I'll get to that). Diablo 2 had no protection other than a key, and it still did quite well from I remember. At some point, companies just went CRAZY and decided they had to include so much security that it started preventing the user from playing the game.
I'm glad to see an intelligent company getting back to their roots. "Letting" people hack a game is not what they're trying to do here, it's letting people enjoy the game the way they want to enjoy it, AND they get the bonus of not having to spend money on a growing, but utterly useless category (security). Gal Civ 2 ftw :) - znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://forums.galciv2.com/index.aspx?forumid=161&aid=106741&c=1 permlink is here...
- oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"chromosome-deficient younger sibling"
You shouldn't insult chromosome-deficient people by comparing them to digg. - noodhoog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What the hell?!
These guys make a game, DON'T punish the customer by putting StarForce or other DRM crap on it, and then people thank them by taking that as a licence to pirate?! that's messed up.
I'm not snow white.. my PC's seen it's fair share of pirate games, but really, these guys are a relatively small company, they make an awesome (IMO, of course) game, they care about their community - loads of modding support and no DRM *****. If any games company deserves your money they do.
And at risk of sounding like one of those paid paid forum-spamming whores Penny Arcade have been talking about lately, GalCiv2 is really really good. If you like turn based strategy games, or space games in general, check it out. IMO it's way better than The Ur-Quan Masters, which is supposedly the holy grail of the genre - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I dont have any interest in playing that game, so i wont buy or download it, but if i did want to play it, i would pay for it. The fact that they dont use DRM is good, and more companies should do that. In my opinion DRM is as bad as or worse than spyware and adware. In fact, someone should make an anti-DRM tool that automatically removes sony rootkits and itunes and any other lame copy protection crap that these companies feel they need to infest our computers with.
- Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg is reporting that a website is implying that we want Galactic Civilizations II to be pirated. Absolutely not! Of course we DO NOT want our game to be pirated. We're a small company, every lost sale hurts us.
http://forums.galciv2.com/index.aspx?forumid=161&aid=106741&c=1 - stylerm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I approve your acknowledgment of your mistake instead of passing the blame.
- Naruto28, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What the hell are "Civililizations"? I can't even pronounce this...
- noodhoog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy crap, the Star-Force people are providing a link to pirate copies of GalCiv2 to show that they should've used Star Force?! How LOW will they sink to sell their goddamn rootkit virus malware?!
- Phantomwhale, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Bought a nice shrink wrapped copy of galactic civ II in the UK a few months back (serial is on CD, so not visible until opened).
Opened it a few months later (yesterday) and tried to register - 'cept someone has stolen my serial apparently so I can't. So I can't get the updates I paid for. And support don't want to know about it (they keep claiming I have bought a second hand copy; e.g. calling me a liar)
Stardock, steam, whatever-the-heck-they-did-on-Bioshock - forget it. I'm sticking to games where you pay money and you get the game. To own.
Looks like it's either (a) argue with big company whilst they ignore me (b) screw that waste of my life and download a crack online. Tricky choice. - Stoutlimb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I saw this game in the store, and I was going to pirate it. I pirate everything I want, and if it proves to be good, I subsequently buy it. (I did this with Morrowind.) It saves me from buying stuff that is total crap, I don't exactly have money to burn. After reading their policy on their website, I have too much respect for them to download their game. I'm going back to the store and buying it. Kudos to them to have such a good attitude.
- Soccrmastr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6lol you ebat me to it also. I mean, they are just saying that the current protection on games ISN'T helping tos top piracy. and I agree.
- bakerstreet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And the other story is still here getting diggs. Digg doesn't have any credibility so long as they knowingly allow people to fabricate stories and get away with it, and not even take the time to remove them when they are notified.
- neouser99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1stupid IE only website... what's with that?
- bakerstreet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even sadder when the author of that article ADMITTED that he falsified the quote from the developers, and they STILL haven't removed the damned article. IMHO, if they want this to be a valid site, they need to ban people that do silly stuff like that. At the very least they don't need to leave the article laying around after such lies have been reported.

What is Digg?
