- FreDre, on 07/14/2008, -3/+127Well, it was bound to happen.
NVIDIA was being a little greedy and lazy.
Good thing ATI shacked them up. - Mejogid, on 07/14/2008, -0/+65It always amazes me how one of the two graphics chip manager appears to be on top, before the other pulls the rug from under their feet with a revolutionary new design, keeping the lead for just a few generations. I really hope that AMD has something similar coming in the processor department - it's going to be bad for the industry if Intel maintains their current sales lead and margins (since that costs AMD cash, reducing their ability to R&D).
- tonyteetime, on 07/15/2008, -0/+51Healthy competition is good between the two giants. It's a win win for pc gamers.
- mrfreeziexp, on 07/15/2008, -1/+48This is why ATI and AMD must survive, without them Intel and nVidia will rape us. Monopolies benefit no one.
- LMN8R, on 07/15/2008, -0/+42After 30 million 8-series GPUs sold - many millions of those being the 8800-series, they're probably not hurting too bad. But it's fricken awesome to see AMD/ATI back in the game giving them some series competition again.
- Evilblobs, on 07/15/2008, -2/+34thats because an enormous number of console fanbois players fail to realize.... anything about PCs.
w/e leave them with their fake-upscaled HD resolutions and their medium-level graphics - PeterNorton, on 07/14/2008, -2/+27It is the same game every year. But I think it was time that Nvidia gets a dose of reality. They were getting too cocky.
- da_bradler, on 07/15/2008, -1/+24Pretty sweet that for 80 dollars you can get a graphics card that will easily outperform any of the current consoles and for 200 dollars you can get a graphics card that can absolutely max out any non-crysis game at beyond HD resolutions. long live the pc
- tomz17, on 07/15/2008, -0/+22Now if only AMD can surprise Intel on the next round everything would be back to peachy in computerland!
- lordblue, on 07/14/2008, -2/+23nVidia stocks crashing, they'd better think of something new.
- evilesttoast, on 07/15/2008, -0/+19no, different chipsets
- PATSCRU, on 07/14/2008, -0/+18Nvidia had no idea that Ati had such an ace up their sleeve with the HD4850 and HD4870. I'm so glad that with the 4850 there is a performance card for the masses that can play nearly everything maxxed out for $200. I sincerely hope that price/performance excellence is going to be the wave of the future for PC gaming.
- samoan27, on 07/14/2008, -11/+29Buried for misleading graphs not grounded at zero. (I'm not saying all graphs should be grounded at zero, I'm just against ones where the value drops by less than 50% and it's depicted as dropping by 90%)
- PATSCRU, on 07/15/2008, -0/+16i can't stand people like that
- faizal5k, on 07/15/2008, -0/+16ahhhhh good ol' competition. we, the consumers, always win.
- dagamer34, on 07/15/2008, -0/+13I don't think you've read the AnandTech article over the GTX 200 architecture. Because the GTX 200 chip is so LARGE, they needed a proven (older) manufacturing process to make sure that their chip yields are high enough to launch. Otherwise, you get the scenario way back when with the ATI X1800 series that, because of the low yields, the product took forever to go to market.
nVidia would love to move to the 55nm as fast as possible, but if you move too fast, you get bad chips (thus increasing the price A LOT for the chips that are available in order to break even). You have to remember that the GTX 280 is a mammoth of a chip weighing in at 1 billion plus transistors. No other chip like it has been manufactured before.
Anyway, here's the link. Go educate yourself: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3334 ... - jonesy827, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11I am glad that no matter how bad it gets ATI keeps trying and eventually gets it right...about to buy 1 or 2 4850s...maybe 1 4870....we shall see
- wal9000, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11Though once the CUDA PhysX port is done, you'll probably be able to use the 8800 for graphics and the 8600 for physics. No SLI though, they have to be the same for that.
Another area where ATI is ahead of the curve. If I'm not mistaken, CrossfireX lets you use multiple cards of different types. - Evi1d33d, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11The problem with consoles is that you are sitting so far from the screen that you won't see the flaws in the graphics.
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -0/+10Nvidia is heading straight for loses. Considering the size of the GTX 260 and 280 and the recent price cuts, they are making either little profits or losing money here. I'm sure quite a few of Nvidia's partners are really not happy with the recent price cuts.
- greevar, on 07/15/2008, -0/+10They also fail to realize is that they can copy their movie collections to the PC and watch them on their 108" Plasma Screen (I can dream can't I?). PC's are a gaming system and more. Nuff said.
- DarkShroud, on 07/15/2008, -0/+9The fact that it's smaller & uses less energy then then nVidia cards is also a plus.
- jimmy2x2x, on 07/15/2008, -3/+12all we need now are some decent PC games to play!
- Chicken, on 07/15/2008, -3/+12Nvidia just crammed their GT200 chips with loads of transistors and didn't even bother moving the manufacturing process down to 55nm which would've reduced the costs and been a great incentive for consumers (less heat output and more efficient).
- jmkiii, on 07/14/2008, -0/+8Just like reading english.
- Elranzer, on 07/15/2008, -0/+8This isn't the first time AMD has pulled the rug out from under of lazy developers. If it wasn't for the massive rise in Athlon 64 sales, Intel may have never moved on from the bloated Pentium4/D architecture to the remarkable Core Duo series of CPUs.
- Smills, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7Have you seen the preliminary reviews of the 4870X2? It totally destroys the GTX 280, and in some games two GTX 280's.
- Theoleander, on 07/15/2008, -1/+8My 4850 just got to Portland....Should be here tomorrow!! :)
I'm really glad ATI is back in the game! I love ATI, but NVidia has been on the mark lately. I loved my 97-9800 pro's. But since nvidia came out with the 6 series, they have really been leading strong. Ding! ATI! - themutt22, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7Well, it should at least be better, the GTX 280 costs more than twice what the HD4850 does.
- da_bradler, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7anyone else notice how deceptive those graphs were? there was one where the price droppped like 5 dollars and the graph made it look like prices were plummeting out of control. graphs should start at zero or at the very least if you are showing multiple graphs have them all start and end at the same prices.
- da_bradler, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6it's not Nvidia I'm worried about it's there manufacturers. Nvidia has recently had to bail a couple out from bankruptcy and the reason this generations cards were so expensive is because they were trying to increase profits for there manufacturers/distributors. they are gonna be mighty pissed at Nvidia now that they have had to cut prices on virtually every one of there cards.
But on the plus side now I can afford to cheaply go sli! :) - Chicken, on 07/15/2008, -1/+7Yes but all nvidia had to do was wait. Their cards were still going strong so there was no point in releasing a $600 card.. especially if they were so close to the 55nm process anyway.
- Elranzer, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6"Sources told TG Daily that Nvidia is adjusting its marketing strategy to GeForce 8800 cards"
What ever happened to the GeForce9 series? It seemed to only last a month. They seem to talk like the GeForce8 and the GTX are the only two series they've got. - Sugaruss, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6We really don't know how much they are profiting or losing from the chip. What we do know is that nVidia, ruling the roost for as long as they have, wrongfully ignored the competition, and now they are going to pay for it.
- jeosan, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5the 4870 is smaller than the 280, but there is a new card called the 4870 X2 that is bigger than the 4870
- Evilblobs, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5Yeah, plug in a 360 controller and hook up an HDMI cable, and it is nearly indestinguishable....
except that I have 640GB of HD space to hold my game .isos, movies, and such. I can play at real HD resolutions (not 1280x720 upscaled to 1080p) with not eyesoar graphics. - scy1192, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5anyone else think someone should make a docudrama of NVidia vs ATi/AMD?
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5Very nice to see ATI stepping it up the competition. The results are seen here. +1 for the Consumers.
- xexx, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5Yeah, i was thinking about that, I'm surprised they have gotten into the gaming business, without games and such a lot of their top cards won't sell. There's been talk of PC gaming dying (which is crap) but you would think AMD and nVidia would be slightly more vocal on the subject.
- npsken, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5Anandtech should be able to help
- Shaflugi, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Would 720p even be worth it on a cellphone screen?
- mcalica, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4I wish they would just bust out the Tegra. I bought some Nvidia stock a few weeks ago and regret doing so ever since. I think if they started integrating the Tegra chips into Smartphones we could see a revolutionary step for the company. Imagine if you could walk around with a phone powerful enough to output 720p...Sorry, went a little off track. So today is a good day for PC gamers, but a horrible day for Nvidia share owners.
- kingUssop, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Welcome back to life, ATI. Nvidia, wear this dunce cap for awhile.
- raptor87, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Nvidia's stock price is looking very similar to alot of those graphs
- seraph582, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Don't be ridiculous. ATi's 2xxx series was an embarassment, and so was the 3xxx series with AA turned on. They suck. I bought a 2900pro, hated it, turned around and bought an 8800gt and LOVED it. Both were $300 when I bought them from newegg. ATi pulled their heads out of their butts for once is all that happened. LOL @ nVidia doomtalk. XD
- exeprime, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4and using the "reply" button.
- Johnny1337h4x0r, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3you do know that you can buy 2 HD4850's put them into cross fire and get better performance than a 280 for less the cost?
- Darksoul, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3Sorry but your full of ***** to I suggest you look look at those specs and chats again. The point is because when ATI originally released crossfire based cards yes they where bad but that was fixed and its only by word of mouth by people like you that rumor has kept going. Another point for the same price you can get two ATI's or one 4870X2 and it will cost much less. Price talks and with the performance of each card varying per game its just not worth it to go out and spend over five hundred to six hundred per card just does not justify the price.
I saw this back when AMD bought ATI it was going to change the way things where going and it appears that is whats happening the good thing about AMD and ATI their processors have always cost ed alot less then the others graphics cards as well. Though no doubt the core 2 is smacking them around hard the only reason Intel made the core 2 was to compete with AMD and their XP processors and not costing much it took them a big loss when AMD was spanking intel for quite sometime with the XP processors for Intel to get what they needed to do.
So either your biased because you own a GTX 280 or your Brand follower and just don't want to admit when your brand fails. Because the charts and the reviews say other wise. - greenlight2001, on 07/15/2008, -2/+5Shut the ***** up? I know that's what I wish you'd do.
