- MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+165*****. I followed this case on Court TV earlier this year. This kid was abused. Physically, verbally, and almost raped.
The sad thing though, is that people around them knew he was abused, and no one did anything about it because they didn't want to get involved. He had even talked to some service workers, and they took his parents' word over his. It's just another case of the system failing an abused child.
FYI, Grand Theft Auto, nor any other video game, for that matter, was brought up during the trial. I think his family is just trying to score some money. - icantdrawanime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+94'The game trained him [on] "how to point and shoot a gun in a fashion making him an extraordinarily effective killer without teaching him any of the constraints or responsibilities needed to inhibit such a killing capacity," according to the suit.'
I really hope I dont have to explain how ridiculous this argument is... Any judge that considers this as a valid argument has no place among the living.
what jack thompson? did I play too much mario kart? - icantdrawanime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+71In other news today, a Texas teenager was arrested for throwing turtle shells and bannana peels out of his car. When the police searched his house they found a nintendo 64 video game console and a copy of mario kart. The father and mother of the boy plan on sueing nintendo of america for $60 million dollars.
When questioned, the father stated that the boy would never have been so skilled with turtle shells and bannana peels had he not trained night and day on mario kart.
seriously... what the ***** - greedo80000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+64Yeah if jack thomspon thinks that, then i guess it's safe to conclude that you should be able to get your liscence after playing 50 hours of project gotham. Hell, you could be a qualified nascar driver with a basis of arguement like that.
- Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45People should just cut to the chase and start suing "Personal Responsibility" for millions of dollars.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Jack Thompson needs to actually PLAY Grand Theft Auto and realize the aiming system sucks for that game. There's no way in hell anyone could learn how to shoot, kill, or even realistically steal cars from that game.
- UberC, on 10/12/2007, -7/+48The family should sue the parents. If they didn't have sex and have a worthless child, the crime would not have occured either.
- TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Wait wait wait... I'm not reading the F-ing article because I can already tell it's BS from looking at the comments. But how the hell does a third-person game teach someone how to shoot? Maybe an FPS, but a third-person? Yeah you doofus, point and shoot. This is obviously just a way to get some free money.
- Easty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36icantdrawanime:
You mean you DON'T aim and fire a gun in real life by holding R1 and pressing circle?
Wtf? - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35I don't know about you, but I don't care how many violent games you play - A PS2 controller or mouse is hardly going to train you to be an efficient killer. You can take the greatest Unreal players... and I bet if they actually tried to fire an assult rifle, they'd be thrown back on their ass.
Video games do not make you a violent person. Violent people with problems just happen to play popular video games like the rest of us. - MoeWasHere, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35I was reading until it said JACK THOMPSON is the lawyer in the case.
F him and F his backwards 'cause'.
Here's a thought: what ever happened to the war on DRUGS? - icantdrawanime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35I say this as an American citizen...
Is it just me or do a lot of Americans want freedom with no strings attached? It seems to me like they want the government to be responsible when they do something stupid, but dislike it when the goverment tries to keep them from doing stupid things...
I apologize for the billionth comment, but this story has ticked me off for a while now... - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35"Its not a war on drugs. Its a war on personal freedom. Please keep that in mind at all times." -Bill Hicks
- dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Hmm. I enjoy going out to the range now and again, and can easily say that there isn't a video game that exists that can train that effectively. The simulators used by the Army are close, because they actually have things like barrel movement and kickback, but using a joypad to move a cursor around teachs shooting the same way pushing a Hot Wheel around as a kid teaches how to drive.
Sadly, just sensationalism. These lawsuits have been shot down in the past, but it's sad they get such national recognition. - aggrazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26No matter how many times I bump into someone and press 'A' ... they fail to give me any relevant information about my quest.
- Astravian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25I learned how to kill turtles by jumping on them and then kicking them into a bottomless pit from Super Mario Bros. Just don't tell PETA.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24What if I killed someone with a sword? Would Legend of Zelda be blamed?
- snapuswipe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23"Nobody shoots anybody in the face unless you're a hit man or a video gamer."
- joerod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Why don't people blame Grand Turismo for people speeding on the highway? I think people like to use GTA as a scape goat. I've played this game since it came out and I never once thought about killing anyone. ITS A GAME!!
- orlandogeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Sadly this is probably going to get worse before it gets better. One of the serious problems we have here in this country is failure to accept responsibility for your own actions. It's a disgusting trend and it needs to end, but it wont.
- g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I'm pretty good at jumping over barrels thrown by a gorilla.
- greedo80000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Jack Thompson is a turd. He's constantly using his right to free speech, but hates it when his name and public information about him is involved, and is broadcast on the radio.
And whatever happened to thomspons famous war on rap music? Oh yeah, it was replaced with the war on violent video games, just another american war that has no basis of merit, supporting evidence, or factual claims. Just another WMD in the desert I guess. - achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23He shot his parents.
(well, dad and stepmom) - dahat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Agreed.
Why can’t some parents for once say “We F-ed up... we should have done more to raise our child properly and to ensure that they knew that violence is not acceptable as well as to control the games, tv shows and movies they watched that we felt could turn him into a killer.” - invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18if the kid was 14, then he shouldn't have had the game in the first place. that's the purpose of the ESRB. the victims' families should sue murderer's parents for letting him play the game. they're the ones that facilitated the 'training' despite TakeTwo warning them that it's for mature audiences only
- tradjik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Yeah, parents digging for money. They don't want to take responsibility for their child so it must be SOMETHING else out there that caused the kid to flip.
GTA carries a M rating. M is 17 or higher, so clueless parents probably bought the game for the kid. At least KNOW what your kids do/watch/play and don't believe the TV is a babysitter.
M rating defined -
"Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain mature sexual themes, more intense violence and/or strong language."
Descriptors: Blood and Gore, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Violence - P5ycHo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17The fact that you can get guns at every corner of the street has nothing to do with it?
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Come to think of it, how will the Wii be effected by this? I mean, now you really ARE pointing and shooting, and also slicing with a sword...
Hell I'm gonna become a master fisherman thanks to Zelda =P - nickj6282, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15No, if our system worked the way it should, YOU would be blamed. Trying to pass the buck is the American Way (tm) however.
- knueven7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@Rayonic
You're forgetting it's a person's free will and personal freedom that allow them to try drugs in the first place. In life every action has a consequence, some larger than others. When a person chooses to use drugs they are aware of the potential consequences of their actions. By their own free will they choose to ignore those consequences for a quick high. The way I see it is once they make that choice I could care less about them. I don't feel sorry for them, nor do I feel obligated to help them. They made their choice and now it's up to them to make the choice to kick the habit. Their free will/personal freedom has not been taken away by drugs. They threw it away. - UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14That's because they weren't wearing the questgiver's hat! http://www.jinx.com/scripts/details.asp?affid=-1&productID=609
- JeremiahLBurns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Jack Thompson is a waste of skin that could be otherwise put to better use grafted the ass of a cow.
He is wasting precious oxygen by breathing it when it could be otherwise put to better use starting some little arsonist on his way to a life of crime.
He is mass is taking up space that could be otherwise put to better use holding his own casket.
No...I'm not a Jack Thompson fan. The man has no concept of reality when it comes to violent games or how to handle them. He's a boob...and a nuisance. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I'm going to sue Nintendo over learning how to eat mushrooms, throw turtles, and break every brick in sight...
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Yeah...... sorry about those barrels.
That gorilla was actually me, I was playing too much King Kong and got carried away.
Good way to pick up blondes though. - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Nah, he'll blame it on a combination of call of duty and time travelling deloreans.
- 4degrees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12next thing you know jack thompson will be blaming the entire world war 2 on battlefield 1942, or call of duty series.
*sigh* here we go again! - brufleth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@icantdrawanime
I think it has a lot to do with greedy people and sleazy lawyers.
I was hit by a street trolley when it flew through a red light. I spent seven hours in the ER. It was the fault of the trolley operator. I talked to a lawyer about bringing a case against the transportation department but I was a student at the time so I didn't lose wages and I managed to hobble to classes. My injuries while very painful were mostly recovered from. The lawyer told me that my pain in suffering was probably not really worth the time, effort, and money involved with a court case. I was a little peeved since people sue over hot coffee in this country but he was probably right.
There are a lot of sleazy lawyers out there though who would have pushed me to claim psychological damage and massive disability to squeeze out more money. Lots of people are just really greedy. - dchaosdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11and then someday someone will sue god for creating evil.... i seriously can't wait til that happens.
- daedal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Jack Thompson's an ambulance chaser. Period.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'd sue his parents for calling him cody posey.
anyway "but his lawyers claimed his father had abused him for years." Hm.......yeah, it was the game that done it. :| - g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Well the War on DRUGS has successfully convinced society that drug addicts aren't people with addictions, they are criminals who should be locked in a cage.
The new war is the War on Personal Responsibilty. You can't expect parents to take care of there kids, come on thats just insanity. And people don't know that smoking cigarettes is bad for your lungs, do you think the average person puts together coughing up blood with smoking 2 packs a day? If you did then you must be a genious, the rest of us dumb ***** need to be medicated for hyperactive attention deficit disorders and erectile disfunction.
Hell I don't even know how to change the station on my radio so everything has to be censored incase it offends me. Ya know because if my feelings are hurt I would be sad and then I would need prozac. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11did yall see that story about the parents who sent their kid to jail then prison for barrowing the family vehicle to teach him a lesson?
then he got murdered in prison transport?
then the family tried to blame the system. TERRIBLE parenting, treating their kid like *****, then a tragedy happens and they blame everyone but themselves - Solkre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The game is rated M for 17+. This kid was 14 when he commited the murders, he shouldn't even been playing that game. His parents are to blame in this one, but nobody would say that in court.
I think all Take-Two games should clearly state "Intended for Fish Only" as to keep them from legal troubles. Anyone who buys it must agree that the game is not intended for their use, and they're purchasing it for a fish (a mature fish). - joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9So he's a ***** then?
- Robomonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think Jack Thompson needs to stfu.
- zubi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8And the crime would not have occured if guns didnt exist. But they arent going after smith and wesson......
- duck1123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The worst part of this whole thing is, it only takes one stick-up-his-ass judges to say "Okay, you win. Rockstar must pay fines for turning this innocent child into a killer" to give cases like this legitimacy. Take-Two should counter-sue for defamation of character. (I assume it's possible to defame the personal reputation of a corporation.) Jack Thompson should be forced to pay in retribution for trying to convince everybody that this was anything else but a case of a kid (possibly with severe emotional trauma) snapping and killing his parents.
"...he shot his family after his father, the ranch foreman, slapped him for not cleaning horse stalls fast enough. [...] his father had abused him for years."
that should say it all... - joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I sincerely wish that take2 print out this page and use all these comments in court.
It would be the greatest day. - brianbennett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Guns don't kill people. Kids who play video games kill people.
Got the T-shirt: http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts/gaming/713e/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I remember this...Never during the trial did I hear anything dealing with a game.
