- mikeyeah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51Sounds Russian. Looks "Middle Eastern."
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51Yes we do! We need to maximize ad revenue!
- DanteDefiance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Daily Bugle is based on an actual building in NYC
- CrazedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38Appropriately placed webcomic time:
http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=224 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34This is 2007, we don't need an article put across several pages...
- nav2k4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29lol i wonder if rockstar is trying to tell us something with this...

- Dayz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Is the main character a Russian guy or Middle Eastern?
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Is all of that bloom necessary?
God, I hate bloom. - prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14That was my first thought. "I notice real-life has a lot less bloom".
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15It doesn't have to look EXACTLY the same...it is a parody after all....it just needs to look good enough to reconize it.
- artofwar420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13But bloom looves you.
- rome747, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Wow, graphics nowadays look like photos.
- EmperorAwesome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10This reminds me of the time I went to daytona beach. I forget which street I was on but it was the last one before the beach. I looked to my right and got the damnedest feeling of recognition. There was this pink strip club, and I swear it was the pole position (don't remember the exact name). My friends and I freaked out, and I found out later that vice city was pieced together from specific locations throughout southern Florida.
- kamau84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Um, these are landmarks, of course it's going to be detailed. Every game has that much detail if it's trying to replicate landmarks. Let's see what 79th and Central Park West looks like in the game.
- JagoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nothing beats the 2 billboards in the trailer though:
"America's Next Top Hooker"
and
"I Slept with your Mom"
lol - chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Closer and closer to realism
The Matrix is coming
I'd give it another 5 years before photo realism
We would all be wearing high def helmet screens, and using motion detection to play games - TNHitokiri, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12I think its great that video games are being modeled after real life. Maybe in 10 years, there will be a GTA that spans the entire United States and also has mmorpg features as well.
- NiteMayr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes, "MetLife will sue our 'constantly under threat of lawsuit' asses."
- TrueJustice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ok I watched the trailer and I take back what I said about Times Square. At 26s there is cool looking tower of ads that looks like Times Square. The screen shot they have (at 28s) isn't Times Square at all; it looks more like 7th ave outside Penn Station (more like the mid 30's as opposed to 42nd), nice try guys (but more credit to the game). I don't understand, after watching the trailer, why they would choose those shots instead of the few others that I thought actually did look like the city, the stock ticker for instance.
- rightmindx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5A subtle touch, but my favorite thing about the GTA IV trailer is how the first half plays like a Godfrey Reggio film.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PirH8PADDgQ - krishasaheadake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Still looks very impressive to me
- SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bloom has many uses.
Such as covering up for lower texture memory.
And uhhh, Its more along the lines of a film camera, that has lots of bleeding. - Penn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's being released on the XBOX 360 with exclusive content being added throughout it's life span via the XBOX live marketplace.
- stuf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"It's hard to tell which is real and which is fake. This game looks like it will be amazing!"
No it's not. Still seems like bloom = realism. - Firespawnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The first picture is shot from a different angle than the still. In the photo you can see downtown, with the Woolworth Building being the pointy one on the right. In the still, you see midtown with the Empire State Building dominating. I'm don't think you can actually get that shot, but the bridge looks pretty good based on what you can see from Brooklyn.
- burden555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2as always in games they overdid the HDR lighting to the point where it becomes obvious what is real life and what is game
- jeremy6h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As briefly mentioned by another post, the GTA IV trailer is an homage to the time-lapse photography films of Godfrey Reggio (Koyaanisqatsi, Naqoyqatsi, and Powaqqatsi,) and also the music of Philip Glass. Glass has had a long and successful career in art music and film, as well as being one of the foremost composers of the Minimalist genre. You might remember him being mocked on South Park during the Non-Denominational Christmas episode. His most recent film scores are "The Hours," "The Illusionist," and "Notes on a Scandal." Although, I do have to add that it seemed they were also digging into Don Davis and his score from the Matrix.
Big kudos to Rockstar for the rather obscure (and really well done) reference! - dinobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They forgot stills of Peter Stormare as the GTA IV guy XD
- imdeanlabouty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.gamesradar.com/gb/ps3/game/news/article.jsp?articleId=20070330121612607036&releaseId=20060308105930968037§ionId=1006&pageId=20070330123345873034
They say these don't match but that church was in GTA3 and Liberty City Stories. - sirjimbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks to me like they got the Woolworth and the Empire State Buildings confused in relation to the Brooklyn Bridge. You can see the Empire State Building from Brooklyn Bridge park but only the top 1/4 as it is way up town from there.
- Kxpuc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1where's the "America's next top whore" Poster Ad?
- b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I never realized that TS is that devoid of people and traffic...
- stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So is the voice done by Jean Reno? The main character looks enough like him.
At least that is who it reminded me of instantly. - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're absolutely right. Side by side comparisons don't have any of the fudging present in these GTA stills. The PGR3 comparisons are actually difficult to tell apart from the real photos. The only things that gave it away for most of the people I showed were the trees. Still can't get that natural foliage.
- djbumunltd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To me...one of the bridges seems to be a combination of the 59th street bridge(with the cable car) and the Manhattan bridge(location relative to the bridge that looks like the Brooklyn bridge and the design) and based on that shot from the base of the bridge, I think it is reminiscent of the base of the Triboro bridge at Astoria park. The benches seem to indicate it's a park. That trailer has me so hyped up. I can't wait for some gameplay.
- exick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm going to balk at their comparison to the Holy Trinity Cathedral. I don't think that's the one that Rockstar was going for. St. Patrick's on 5th avenue is more well-known and matches up better with the one shown in the trailer.
- Medusausi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty cool. I did the same thing with San Andreas. I went to San Francisco found scenes similar to San Fierro and took pictures. It was amazing how accurate they were, especially around the "train" station. In reality it was a bus station, but it was cool seeing how amazingly detailed they were.
- nyccharlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree with that. there's no way you can get the empire state building in the shot with an angle like that.
- xVern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It'd look cooler if it were crysis
- Heyseuss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It was, but alot of things about it were different, especially it's location. This new one is to scale and in the right location.
- LordofShadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So this is the engine they will make gta sequels off of for the next 5 years? ;o)
- SomaPhotos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1errmmm the reason marilyn monroe's dress flew up was because she was over a subway grate, not in front of the flatiron building...
- firstmargaret, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Perfect post! What an epatage! http://birdtalks.blogspot.com
- GeneralJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope There are more Peds on the street especially in Time Square, because The last Gta's lacked the peds in areas of interest. San Andreas felt like an empty city with limited amount of people to kill.
- SomaSynth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they're over-doing it a bit with the sun. Unless this is set 5 Billions years in the future when it goes Red Giant, in that case it's probably the appropriate effect.
- Ridikul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, they improved the graphics without getting rid of the GTA art style, just what I wanted.
- Mexrocker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What about the Statue of Liberty?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This game is in this Top 10 Video Games with Cars ! http://digg.com/gaming_news/Top_10_Video_Games_with_Cars_2
- payndz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd like 'movie' New York in a game rather than the real place. Like going to 55 Central Park West and looking up to see the Temple of Gozer on top of the apartment building. Or finding Monk's Diner (Seinfeld) or Central Perk (Friends). The games are already full of movie in-jokes as it is, so this kind of thing wouldn't be a stretch.
Though maybe finding Q: The Winged Serpent nesting in the Chrysler Building or CHUDs in the sewers might be pushing it... -
