- wild, on 10/12/2007, -4/+137No planes. :(
- charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -6/+87I am extremely bummed about the no planes news. I hope that's wrong. Flying planes around was one of the most enjoyable parts of GTA San Andreas. They would be stupid not to include planes.
What would I rather be able to do...walk around and chat with lunatics...or fly planes? Hmm tough choice there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+74Who gives a ***** about 9/11. I'm sick of that being used as a crutch for everything.
- bofhcabbit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+60Misleading description; it implies that the article linked is the 10 pager. The "article" linked is a short point-form list of some information *about* the ten page article topped off with a promise of more information and a DiggBegg. Here's the meat of the link:
What we have learned so far:
* The protagonist's name is Niko Bellic, which we believe is Croatian or Serbian.
* Multiplayer is set to be announced.
* You can use a cellphone to call your contacts.
* Apparently there are no planes because there is only one city in the game.
* You have a lot of choice over what you want to do. You still have to take orders from people during missions, but you can also choose how you want to spend your time, e.g "I want to hang out with him, or her... I want to go see this guy 'cause he always has something to do..."
* The story unfolds in a number of different ways. R* is giving people more freedom, more choice and more sense of control over their destiny - the structure of the storyline is quite different to previous games.
* The demo which Game Informer played was for the Xbox 360 version of the game.
* Dan Houser explains that "a big part of New York life is walking the streets and meeting lunatics", and this is something they definitely tried to put into the game. - charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -4/+50If they did it to avoid controversy, then they should have just had the game take place in another city. I would much rather have planes and a fictitious city than have New York and no planes.
- goeatsmsht, on 10/12/2007, -1/+46FTA - "Dan Houser explains that "a big part of New York life is walking the streets and meeting lunatics", and this is something they definitely tried to put into the game."
I do that everyday. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38Yes, one of the main storylines in GTA IV involves falling off a chair so you can collect insurance money and build your criminal empire. Then you go to a burger joint and find a piece of glass in your food and sue again.
More or less, GTA IV will be more Phoenix Wright than Saint's Row. I don't know why people are clamoring about the graphics, because 90% of the game will be spent inside courtrooms, hence the lack of planes. The only driving you will get to do is driving between the circuit court and the superior court which happens very late in the game
Oh man, I think I just broke my NDA...Rockstar is going to have my head - NyteStarNyne, on 10/12/2007, -9/+40No planes is defiantly a surprising move by R* but I imagine that it's to calm down the NY controversy from getting out of hand.
I'm sure R* have found other ways to keep our interests though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30"but I imagine that it's to calm down the NY controversy from getting out of hand. "
What NY controversy? Planes not allowed in NYC anymore? - EvilFerret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29A 10 page article....and that's all they learned? That list doesn't tell us a damn thing.... Did 9 pages just have "bla bla bla" in them? Er more likely, they used most of it talking about previous GTA games.
- fober, on 10/12/2007, -8/+31Well, I expect at the very least for the PC community to mod/add planes, trains and automobiles... and John Candy.
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Ok, they didnt SEE any planes, but apparently they don't know from R* if they are in the game. Thats a horse of a different color.

only pictures i could find - Dan11023, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20There at least better be helicopters
- redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Now where am I going to put my snakes?
- anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Since when has GTA had a focus on realism? The jetpack mission was fun as hell. As was the fighter jet mission. The highlights of the game in my opinion.
You can't have a whole game about "smokin" rival gang members. It gets old. GTA has always been about unbridled craziness. - Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Uhm, I've never tried recreating 9/11 in a flight sim. Doing attacks with aircraft that have weapons systems in flight sims yes, but crashing commuter planes into skyscrapers, no. Kinda boring, since really nothing happens except for your character dying. If I want to do some mayhem with civilian aircraft in GTA, I scrape the ground with propeller blades in crowded areas and stuff like that.
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Very disappointed about the lack of planes.
Vice City was so much fun in that for the first time in GTA, you could take to the skies with helis, planes and it was so much fun.
Seeing the city from up above is true freedom.
If I wanted a great graphics GTA style game with no planes, then I would've been happy with True Crime or Saints Row.
GTA will be disappointing if there's only 1 city and no planes. Even GTA 3 had the barely flyable dodo !! And we still flew with just that.....
Hope this is not true else GTA won't be that much fun to me....
Games like Crackdown have shown its so much fun to take to the air.... Love Crackdown.. - str3ama, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22WTF ...no planes? I mean even liberty city had the dodo...I'd rather they redo Liberty City with the same engine as San Andreas and includes planes, then have better graphics and freedom and not have planes. We're supposed to be advancing in features and freedom, not redoing GTA 3 as if it was never made in the first place. I sincerely hope this is just a mistake or that its too early to tell.
If I wanted a life like model of New York city to play in, I'd just go and play True Crime: Streets of New York....realism means *****..without the GTA features that we all know and love (tons of vehicles, freedom, etc). - KnockoutNerd, on 10/12/2007, -10/+26They should have arcades, I really just want to play Pac-man.
- opiv421, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25you're a douche
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14...and with that we have the 10-13 year old response to today's breaking news.
- derricklorah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@bofhcabbit
agreed, it is misleading. It should be "The world exclusive preview on GTA IV in Game Informer reached subscribers today, we don't have scans, but we have 7 mediocre bullet points."
that being said.. anyone have scans? - jeffeb3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13what about helicopters? Are there going to be helicopters? They are cooler than planes.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I really hope that since they're going with the "one city" thing they make it an incredibly gigantic city. I really loved the fact that you had like multiple areas to go in GTA: San Andreas with different environments and feels to each section. It was fun to just get on the highway that circled around the whole place and gun it - cause accidents, mayhem etc - or just pick up a plane and jet across to another area.
Looking forward to more news on this game. I just hope they don't sacrifice open-endedness and side missions to pretty it up. - kevlarbaboon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I think he says "sold." Which to me, is far more interesting.
- Witherbucket, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18For me, GTA has been a great game to just explore and enjoy the simple things with, like pimping, and I'm glad they're making it more that way.
Not having planes really wouldn't matter that much, as it's so much more fun to fly an ATV in any case. =) - RandysWay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Game Informer High Res Scans!

-R - aussieNickuss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"I imagine that it's to calm down the NY controversy"
Isn't the whole GTA series about being controversial? - Tyorant, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Because it's just one city, flying a plane wouldn't work once you reached the city boundry, the only logical thing I think that could cover this is to just extend the city slighty and have the military shoot you down in the same way Battlefield 2 does.
- adeadwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Forget about planes! No unicycles!?
- Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14The no planes bit is kinda annoying to me. in GTA3, they sucked, but they progressively got better, to the point where they are quite fun in SA.
I do have to agree, the storyline needs more work. SA's started out good, then just got screwy (WTF WAS WITH THE JET PACK!? WHAT GANGMEMBERS STEAL FROM GOVERNMENT TESTING FACILITIES!?) - Ayatollah, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19thank you, I can't believe people are getting disappointed about no planes.....big deal, there's about a thousand other things to do
- 15thPD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Does anybody know if GTA:IV is going to come out for the PC as well? Because the only gaming machine I own is my PC, and flying helicopters/planes is incredibly hard & annoying without a console controller.
- Push2Flush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"GTA IV Game Informer Details Emerges"
wouldnt it be emerge, since details is already plural? - StarkDigging, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If Rockstar is looking to Revolutionize the way that GTA is played, I understand why they would hone in on a single city rather than straying back into 'bigger is better.' I would rather that this installment turn the exploration element inward, so that the interior environments are vaster, more complex, and interconnected. Imagine a level where you must hide from assassins, unarmed, in a seedy motel high above the city, and you're under a bed as the sound of successive doors being kicked open gets louder and louder. Do you jump out the window and take your chances on the ledge, or stay there? These kinds of scripted, open ended moments are what could make this the best GTA yet.
That said, I miss planes already. :) - DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's definitely still called Liberty City. In the trailer there are signs for the Liberty City Tree (the local paper), I [heart] Liberty City, and Welcome to Liberty City.
- Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Pay attention. It didn't say the article was a "10 page paper", but rather that Game Informer had a 10 page article in its magazine, and the details from that were available online.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8fober.......yes I got the joke
for those that missed it...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planes%2C_Trains_%26_Automobiles - Sakumi, on 10/12/2007, -13/+18Awsome, the first GTA I'm excited for since GTA 3.. (sorry Vice City and SA were.. meh). I also think it's awesome they gave the reviewers the Xbox360 version over say, PS3. Just thought it was an interesting choice ;)
I'm not concerned about planes so much.. I'd rather them make the rest of the game more in-depth and leave the planes out (this includes the graphics) - olddirtycr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Apparently there are no planes because there is only one city in the game."
***** that. - benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5since when is mentioning their former existence offensive to absolutely everyone?
- NyteStarNyne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4# The protagonist's name is Niko Bellic - an Eastern European immigrant who has come to Liberty City to live the "American Dream."
# The GTA 4 equivalent of the Statue of Liberty is called the Statue of Happiness, and DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is known as BOABO (Beneath the Offramp of the Algonquin Bridge Overpass).
Game Informer
# In Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar have recreated 4 of the 5 boroughs in New York, as well as part of New Jersey. Broker is the GTA IV equivalent of Brooklyn, Manhattan is now called Algonquin, Queens is now Dukes, the Bronx is Bohan, and New Jersey is Alderney. The map is smaller than San Andreas, but considerably more detailed. No countryside or desert, we are led to believe.
# Pedestrians are far more realistic in GTAIV than in previous GTA games - they sit on benches, smoke cigarettes, read books and generally act like any real pedestrian would in the middle of a street.
# The screenshots in the preview are not representative of the final quality of the graphics, Rockstar insist. The game will only look better as the release draws closer..
# Niko was persuaded to move to Liberty City by his cousin Roman, who claimed to be living a wonderful life there with two beautiful women, fifteen sports cars, and lots of money etc, but he was infact telling a lie in order to hide his own failures. Roman is the only person you know in Liberty City at the beginning of the game, and he becomes one of your major connections at the start. Niko is a tough character whereas Roman is friendly. Roman is heavily in debt and a lot of people are after him - he needs Niko's support. They are constantly bickering.
# The demo (which was played on Xbox 360) begins with Bellic standing inside of the taxi depot, which Roman operates in the borough of Broker in a converted industrial garage. Roman works at a cluttered desk in a shabby environment, and at this point the graphical improvements are extremely evident. Bellic walks to a brownstone house in Broker, where he pushes open the door and pulls out his pistol - the house however, is not occupied.
# As Bellic walks, you can feel the weight behind each step he makes. Variations in the terrain cause realistic changes in the walking animation. The physics have also improved and character movements are more realistic.
# Multiplayer in Grand Theft Auto 4 is set to be announced, though Rockstar are remaining tight-lipped about what it involves...
# You can use a cellphone to call your contacts.
# Apparently there are no planes because there is only one city in the game.
# You have a lot of choice over what you want to do. You still have to take orders from people during missions, but you can also choose how you want to spend your time, e.g "I want to hang out with him, or her... I want to go see this guy 'cause he always has something to do..."
# The story unfolds in a number of different ways. R* is giving people more freedom, more choice and more sense of control over their destiny - the structure of the storyline is quite different to previous games - AndyVenus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, there is just one guy with the mag. Well, actually his girlfriend has it and has given the details that we know so far. There is more to come.
- Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4the single city doesnt bother me, since only 1 out of the 11 GTA games (counting GTA4) has had more than one city. It isnt like they set a precedent where it was expected of all GTA games to have then dropping it (like the planes). Its also not like the city is going to be small. Expect massive amounts of details in it, and lots of areas to explore.
- ShBm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't feel like sifting through 55 pages of forum posts to find the article.
- elementdan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3in a goddamn train
- stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm just hope there is urban, suburban and rural areas like in SA. I don't care if it's one big city as long as they have all the other elements. Planes would be cool, but as long as they have heli's I'll be OK with it.
- pmuaddib, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Everyone needs to write in to Rockstar and complain about the lack of planes and countryside. Maybe it isn't too late to get them to add that into the game.
