GTAIV Breaks Halo 3's Record! $500 million in 1st week, 6mn
aol.com.au — The title sold about 3.6 million units on April 29, its opening day, bringing in roughly $310 million ( 200.91 million). This is $10 million (6.48 million) more than what Microsoft Corp.'s "Halo 3," another blockbuster game, took in during its first week last fall.

In all fairness GTA IV was on multiple consoles whereas Halo 3 was released as an Xbox 360 exclusive. GTA IV is still very impressive.

I think the only fair way to compare these two is to take Halo's sales and add them to another big selling PS3 game's.
And neither of the games could of been launched on PC the same day either, but that's a rare find anyways. -

i still think Halo 3 sales are more impressive considering it made only 10 million less then GTA4 on day one and it was only on one console.

How did Halo 3 fair against the number of GTA IV's sold for the 360? I think that comparison would be more fair.

I truly believe that Bungie dropped the ball when it came to Halo 3. Instead of taking a chance to do something innovative with the franchise they decided to take the easy road and basically redo Halo 2 and then tack on a couple new features.

Whats the deal with all the parentheses in the article? Each time they said something like.. "it sold over 500 million dollars worth (326.01 Million)."
What does that mean? Am I missing something or did they seem to exaggerate all the numbers just to immediately turn around and give you the real numbers in parentheses directly afterwards. Seems redundant... anyone know what's up with that? -
I wonder how many PS3's and 360's GTA sold?? I bought a PS3 on GTA4 Day. wouldn't have bought one yet if it wasn't for GTA

GTA4 is fun and all but it's heavily flawed. 85 points earned legitimately, 15 on brand name recognition/potential bribery.

The 3.6 Million was for PS3 and XBOX? Or just XBOX alone?
If you are going to compare apples to apples then the 3.6 would have to be the number of games sold on just the XBOX system.
Someone fill me in if I am wrong. -
Hmm, my Nintendo Power magazine didn't have anything about this game in it, but the maps to Zelda were quite helpful.

okay so if we do some SIMPLE maths:
GTAIV sales:
500million in first week
sales ratio of 4:3 ... 360:PS3
Halo 3 sales
300 million in first week
So to make this fair, we need to add what the ps3 could have potentially sold if the ratio was also 4:3 with the halo sales.
(Done maths off screen)
We need to add $258 million to the $300 million = $558 million....
I know that none of this REALLY matters. But still, just saying!

In Halo's defense, it has a much worse storyline and stale weapons and vehicles. It's likely that it only sold as well as it did because it's considerably more family-friendly than GTA.

It didn't just beat Halo - it broke the first week sales record for ANY entertainment product (including movies - GTA 4 dethroned Pirates of the Carribean 3 which grossed $400 million in its opening week).

The other missing piece of information is the install base. If someone was really really interested in comparing opening week sales as a relation of popularity, you have to consider that there are now more consoles on the market than 9 months ago.
I think it's kinda dumb debating these numbers- next year a new game will probably be the new *****. good for us- we get lot's of great games to play. -
But Halo 3 sucks...

Halo fanboys are going to be all defensive regarding Halo 3, so I expect them to defend it with many a lame excuse!!!
Either way, GTA is a much better franchise than Halo; although I did enjoy the Halo story, i believe that GTA IV IS MUCH BETTER than Halo 3.

I own both what do I care. On the other side of the coin GTA4 took 4 years to develop vs 3 for Halo 3 (both started in 2004 according to wiki).

It looks like most people have said what I initially thought, that Halo 3 was only released on 1 console. Looking at that, it appears that Halo 3 had the better launch numbers.
I think GTA4 is a better game, I am enjoying it more than Halo 3 (which I enjoyed a LOT) but as far as launch numbers go, if you are going to compare the two, at least try to compare apples to apples. -

Halo = most over-rated game series of all time. If it weren't for Halo, retarded frat guys who don't give a ***** about gaming would have never bought Xboxs and PC gaming wouldn't have been poisoned by their lack of taste.

In all fairness, you can't compare the Halo 3 launch to the GTA IV launch without isolating the 360 sale numbers from the PS3's. In which case Halo 3 probably did better on its respective console.

I like how people are comparing the sales even when Halo 3 came out in September, pre-Christmas. How many more 360s and PS3s are out than even 6 months ago? GTA had a much larger install base, not a perfect comparison.
