- asif5th, on 10/12/2007, -31/+85***** Sony.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31Bias? Who had rootkits in music cds? Who pushes us to buy UMDs, Bluray and Memory sticks? Who charges a lot of money for a PS3 ? Who insists that the PS3 is hard to find and offers 1200$ for one?
We're far beyond being bias here... - Kaosu, on 10/12/2007, -10/+26Brain Crecente is hell of a man more than I am. If I would have gotten that letter, I would be writing Sony back with expletive letters and damning them to hell. All my future posts on Sony would have a negative spin . . . Not that Sony doesn't do a well enough job at this themselves.
- xerus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18...what?
- drewmacphee, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23Ignorant to what?
Proprietary anything and everything to attempt to corner every medium for the last 30 years?
DRM viruses?
Overpriced outdated inferior electronics?
Cheaply produced batteries?
Overlord control of the media?
A company that doesn't understand it's customer base?
***** Sony is right on so many level. I seem to say it ever week for some new idiocy they've tried to pull over the public.
***** Betamax.. ***** Mini-Disk.. ***** UMD.. ***** Rootkit DRM.. ***** Exploding Batteries.. ***** Blu-Ray.. ***** Sony. - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21"The anti-Sony bias is getting ridiculous. I guess those who are ignorant will see the light sooner or later."
Indeed, because we all hate Sony for *absolutely* *no* *reason*.
/sarcasm (if you didn't catch it yet, look at mandarin's post right below this one) - Raian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18I honestly believe other outlets and press should stand up to Sony and blacklist them.
- MrHate, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17@jacksons98: You're right... if there actually WAS an embargo in place. This wasn't a press release, or official information that Sony gave Kotaku... it was a rumour that they posted. Unfortunately for Sony, it was true. I'm sure the rumour was up on lots of message boards and independant blogs, and I'm sure Sony would've wanted to remove it from those too, but Kotaku was the only one that they could actually put the pressure on by severing their relationship.
As an independant news source, Kotaku did the 100% right thing and I have so much more respect for them now. I can't wait to see how Sony try to clean this PR mess up. - qbix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Makes me wonder how many threats Sony has made to other sites. It just goes to show you how much control these corporations have over the media, both commercial and so-called "independent". I'm sure Sony won't die but their reputation in several areas seems extremely low right now. They already lost the market share they had with several of their product lines, the recognition and respect from a lot of their customers is diminishing, and now they want to sensor a blogger and destroy the buzz around possible "good news"? I don't see why people still support a company like this one.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14He's right. No company could possibly screw things up this often just by chance. Maybe they've replaced the CEO with an evil robot look-alike.
- silverwolfe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Those Bravia TVs kick some major ass. Sharp Aquos is better, but way more expensive.
- qbix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7There are a few divisions in which Sony has an edge or is at least doing things right. Personally I don't want to buy Sony again until they get a grip, but I admit to the fact that some of their products are competitive such as their TVs, and camcorders to name a couple. A lot of us here know quite a bit about technology and can make smarter decisions when it comes to buying tech toys but there is a much larger crowd out there which has no clue and go after brands instead of value or functionality. Plus, these people wouldn't even know that Sony has installed a rootkit in their machines so I imagine that in Sony's eyes their consumer's ignorance is profitary bliss.
- precurser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6its good and bad, if you read Kotaku you would know that. many anti-sony stories get popular here on digg, that doesn't mean that is the extent of the actual site's content.
- Judge373, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6My girlfriend is about to finish her master's in PR, and she says that everything Sony's PR is doing in this situation is basically what she was explicitly taught NOT to do. Sony's PR department needs a serious overhaul.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why is it Kotaku's responsibility to control Sony's secrets? It's called a SCOOP! That's what journalist do 'out scoop the other guy'. If it wasn't for this type of journalist we would just get what companies what you to see which is called a Press Release.
Sony should focus on controlling their leaks not blackballing a journalist. How did Sony think was going to turn out? And didn't they just confirm the rumor (ripping off Wii's Miis and 360's achievements)? - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Swell.
- ReCkLeSsX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't think that this is the first time in the history of man that something like this happened. Stuff like this occurs so much with man of the companies, but behind closed doors.
Kotaku is also aware of the anti-Sony campaigns around the internet and they are currently capitalizing on the issue. - mufasa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is just stupid, how many times have'nt i seen a rumour story posted on gaming sites? this is the first time i've ever heard of a site being blacklisted by the company the rumour is about. It's almost like SCE has an internal competition on how to ***** up the company the most.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Ok genius, read the article before you open your mouth ok?
- RAT-Man, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Has the world gone mad?
Two more things: This isn't a freedom of speech or journalistic integrity issue. It's a respect someones privacy wishes. Publishing the story doesn't bankrupt Sony, but it sure damn puts a damper on whatever Press event Sony has planned for next week. If Kotaku had anyone respect for what Sony has done for them in the past they would have buried the story on and find many other negative stories that they are free to post about Sony.
Secondly, Sony did nothing wrong here. Sony politely asked Kotaku to not post the item, but received a "NO" answer. Sony again responded and said that this would legitimately ruin whatever relationship both entities had in the past. Kotaku, somehow foolish enough to believe their own greatness, threw all their good history down the drain over this. - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's cool of them to stand up to Sony like that to report on what they want to. They're probably missing out on a lot of free goodies and interviews in the future - but that's what it takes to be a good journalist. Good on him for responding with civility as well. I'm sure Sony will realize how bad this looks and invite them back almost immediately.
I hope this is some sort of indication that the rumor is true, that'd be good news for those of us who own a PS3. - ReCkLeSsX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7You really have to take this situation and then place yourself in Sony's shoes.
If this is true, it seems like it can be a pretty cool feature, first of all. If you had a super secret thing that you wanted to tell your friends in a few days, then one of your other friends who finds out about it tells everyone else, that both spoils the surprise and upsets the one who withheld the secret. I'm sure if this happened to one of you, it wouldn't be passed off as a minor issue, you'd feud with the ass who spoiled everything.
Kotaku didn't do this to show Sony up, as with every other gaming blog out there, they were looking for site hits. They could probably care less about "fighting the man." - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nah. Don't ***** Sony.
Let Sony ***** themselves... they're doing it sooooo well. - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I actually don't think most rational people see Sony in the wrong. Kotaku either for that matter. They're both doing what's in their own interest.
It seems like Anti-Sony fanboys jerking each other off to me. - JimmyJJWalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GIZMODO IS Kotaku
Kotaku IS GIZMODO
Look at the IPs! They are the same company... - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4That's interesting because the rumor they're getting blackballed over is actually 'pro-sony'. But Sony ***** that up and ended up CONFIRMING the rumor by making such a BIG DEAL out of it.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, Sony's loss of a surprise for us.
Luckily it won't happen again. - Kinser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Just more proof that sony is incapable of making decent decisions about anything.
Lots of good sony stories came out of Kotaku too. Kotaku carries just about everything
that happens with every system, good or bad.
It's really just Sony's loss. - gaelan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kotaku's posts on this read more like a "dear diary" entry. why do all of these bloggers consider themselves news providers/journalists? i realize it allows them to ego trip on the internet, but cmon they are linking to another blog or real newssource, then giving a couple of lines of opinion...all you tom brokaw wannabees, don't kid yourself.
- ffarrell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Look at the coverage this is getting. This looks awful for Sony, and it is completely their own doing.
- philrenaud, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8"***** sony"
pffft. You would. - Zoglog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Whatever .... I'm suprised Sony even cares about a blog in the first place. They're just lucky it isn't Apple they're dealing with or else they would've gotten more than a nice letter. They probably would've forced them to reveal your sources and threaten to sue them.
they need to Stop whining and respect the wishes of the company and let them announce thier damn crap when they feel like it.
I also like how Joystiq called themselves and Kotaku "News Platforms" My ass.... Bloggers need to die. - Zap2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Fighting the good fight...keep it up!
- AvalonDrew, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Why is this on the front page and the actual blackballing Digg itself not?
- stung47000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Because it got buried for some reason.
- ReCkLeSsX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Is finally settling with Immersion a stupid move, then?
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2blogspam
- rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Kotaku- Wow. Balls like Katamari.
I wish traditional media could do this to Bush. - miketuck3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1All blogger should blackball sony
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2What a load of ***** *****
Sony is not bullying anyone, they gave out a formal and simple and polite request for the rumor to not be posted, because they knew that it was just a rumor and that people would just see it as "OMG SONY COPIED NINTENDO!!111!!111111111!!" - downlo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2If they want to be privy to what is going on behind the curtain, it most likely good idea to keep quite about what is seen.
No one wines and complains when they have to sign an NDA to get into a press event. - EugineMW, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I agree with Sony.
And everyone knows this was a hard decision on Sony's part. Sony warned them what the consequences would be, and they still published it... They knew what they were putting their selves into, actually I believe they did it purposely... after all, they do hate Sony. Anything to give Sony bad press. - VhaidraU, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Kotaku only bashes Sony, so fair is fair, right? Kotaku blackballs Sony and is shocked when it is blackballed back? Grow up boys!
- 3rnesto, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3If I owned kotaku I would not even post anything that has to do with Sony.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2And why would they do that?
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2I've see nothing but anti-sony fud from kotaku here on digg, I dont blame sony.
- playhouse, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6not me, sony sucks! i will never own anything sony ever again. This started with the joke of a gaming system named PS2 not 3. Once I saw xbox, I never again touched my PS2. Can anyone name something that Sony makes that another company doesnt already make a better version of?
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Well this is pretty silly. Sony has every right to ex-communicate Kotaku to protect what seems like one of the biggest secrets of the PS3 yet.
Kotaku had a right to report it, and Sony has a right to not give them any more inside information. I sure as ***** wouldn't if I were running the company.
Neither one is in the wrong.
Other than that, I'm pretty excited that this "rumor" is all but confirmed. What I'd like to see now is if Kotaku will officially break their NDA or keep beating around the bush about it. - chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -17/+7@asif5th
You, sir, need to learn a new phrase. You've posted that same comment in multiple digg articles over the past month and have added nothing to the conversation. You're like a toddler who did something funny once and made adults laugh and say "how cute". Then the toddler does it over and over until it gets annoying. It was cute the first time, now it is just annoying. - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3too bad for kotaku... they pissed off sony and lost their privileges with sony... If you kick my sand castle do you think I'm going to give you my share of this delicious watermelon slice?
Oh ya and this is nothing new.. Apple did this with many bloggers. They even sued them for publishing rumors that had been already ousted by other blogs. -
