- atomysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To all of you justifying this by saying "If pay for the game and to host a server, you can do what you want." and etc. Sure, when you pay to run a server, you should be able to do as you please; that is, as long as you follow said game's EULA. Valve's EULA for CS:S says that mods can be used for personal/non-commerical uses. I say running ads for $2.49 subs is pretty damn commercial. In which case, the ad agency in question should have asked for permission, as well as each individual server owner. Would any of you like it if you owned a store and some jackass came in plastering ads for $2.49 subs all over the place without your knowledge and consent? I know i sure as hell wouldn't. But of course, this is all my opinion. An opinion which is justifiable.
- TuxFan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Maybe the terrorist can wear McDonald's hats while the counter-terrorists wear Pepsi shirts.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2In-game advertising only works when it's relevant to certain games. In Gran Turismo, you would expect to see ads on the walls of the tracks, banners, etc...so in-game advertising makes sense. The problem is when advertisers place their ads in a game that they have no business being in. Let's hope advertising agencies do their homework before pitching in-game marketing ideas to their clients.
- tonage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just makes it more realistic to me. I mean you see ads everywhere in real life too.
- jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"You are entitled to use the Steam Software for your own use, but you are not entitled to: ... (iii) exploit the Steam Software or any of its parts for any commercial purpose."
Does that include ad revenue for sites showing screenshots of the game? What about an article about the game because the word "Counter-Strike" is part of the software? What about the 1's and 0's?
Is non-profit purpose the same as commercial purpose? Can't the server ops say the ad money goes into the cost of running the server? - Whatchamacallit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting concept, I wouldn't mind billboard type ads in a game. As long as the ad is placed appropriately like a sign on wall, etc. I certainly, don't want to see so many ads that every available space including the ground is cluttered with ads. If the server operators wish to run injected ads via a game mod to offset their hosting costs that is fine with me. The concept of Pr0n ads sickens me though... rnrnHowever, Valve should get a piece of the pie, doing an end run around on Valve is a no-no! It is irrelevant that Valve bought Counter-Strike. They are the owners and software is not "Bought" by the users it's licensed. Valve actually "Bought" Counter-Strike so they do own it. Just because an end user paid $49 to license the game does not mean they "Bought" it. You are not free to modify the game for profit. Game mods are made by fans but you can't sell your game mod which builds on the base provided by Valve without compensating Valve. BTW, you don't own those music CD's or movie DVD's either. rnrnThis is the way software has worked since the beginning. In the beginning all software including the source code was free. Just ask RMS of GNU fame. RMS has been fighting commercial software for decades. Hundreds of millions make a living on software licensing and sales. Pandora's box has been opened. Mankind has eaten of the forbidden licensed fruit and he did profit enormously. I believe in free software, I believe in open source but I also believe the author should be able to choose to be free and open or closed and for sale or license.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@abx0r, WRONG!! They didn't hire the people who made CS, they just bought it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great...more corporate SPAM. *palms forehead*
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sonnysavage next time actually read the article, the ads weren't from a custom map they were from a server plugin developed by an advertising agency. The ads were not originally in the map.
- Draconiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*dying*whhaaaaaaaaachickenmcnuggetsareawesomeahhhh*dead*
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And if Valve had any sense, they would have thought of this sort of thing in the first place and made the in-game ads themselves. Like it would download them from Valve's servers, with an option to turn them off or something. Then *they* would be able to sell that space to companies and such.
- elfguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think video game ads are disgusting. The only possible case I could see is if a development company decided to remove or lower the cost to the user for ads, if they specify it in advance. I would never play a game that had ads in it without direct financial benefit for the users.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg, the article covers nothing in how the ads were inserted.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would not mind ads in the slightest as long as they were placed appropriately. If I'm running around a city blowing ***** up, then I expect to see a peeling billboard with some kind of ad on it. You see those in cities. Now if that ad changes occassionally, it won't bother me much.
But if I see one as an interstitial between levels, or see one in thematically inappropriate locations, then that's just going to piss me off, and having me pissed off while I see your ad is not a good way to reach that target audience.
Keep them thematically appropriate, and I have no beef with in-game advertising. - hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sorry...but... how is this a problem? If you're not paying to play on a gaming server, you have no right to not expect them to attempt to recoup their losses or even profit from running that server. Personally, if seeing an occasional American Airlines ad plastered on the tail of a A10 in Desert Combat means less latency and a faster gaming experience, I'm all for it.
- Junto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The spray command is quite frequently used by CS players to tag their kills or just to abuse other players. Advertising on CS maps is not going to last long without being "virtually vandalised" by CS player grafitti.
I foresee things like "Up yours Subway, we eat at BK" being sprayed over the top of ads. CS players will just see it as a joke. - TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i bet this might take off with the poor server ops.
- Ignathius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1subway ads in counter-strike, while getting server ops to break EULA? ya. i'll never buy subway again. that's just plain wrong.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who wouldn't love to pwn Jared.
- Skrolnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jared's a spawn camper.
- anorris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Just makes it more realistic to me. I mean you see ads everywhere in real life too."
Agreed, and if it helps server ops keep servers up for everyone to play on, I call it a fine way to advertise, as long as it isn't done too invasively.
A game I've always though would be excellent for this would be the Grand Theft Auto series. Think of all the billboards and places in the game. If some of them were real businesses who had paid their way in there, not only would it add to the realism, it would boost profits for the developers and (hopefully) get them to knock down the $50 price. Okay, maybe I'm dreaming there.... - johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Agret, Valve bought CS and tidied it up before it 1.0 was released, and also hired several of the people who worked on it. Those same people became Valve employees and created Counter-Strike: Source. So, CS:S was the product of both some original CS developers and Valve (both are the same.)
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also wouldnt mind ads as long as they were appropriately placed. A lot of CS maps (CSS/Hl2dm etc.) maps could actually use more advertisments to enchance the atmosphere (in places).
They should have received permission first though. Tsk tsk. - ware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0subway counter-strike spray, or even burger king counter-strike spray.rnrnwhats the difference, its both advertising in game. stupid story no diggrnrn-ware
- 2gunnZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL "spawn camper"
- brainjuice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This can be done with Mani's Server plug-in already.
- rain9441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the fact that server admins are getting something back from their investment (ads = $), but there has to be a line drawn somewhere or some day (maybe soon) we'll join a game server and be forced to watch 5 minutes of commercials before we play (which is then repeated every 30 minutes). So long as it does not interfere with the game-play factor and fun-factor, I don't see anything wrong with it, except for the fact that the creators of the software arent getting the cut they deserve. This isn't that major of an issue compared to the reverse though. If Valve had advertising in CS from the start and forced it upon server admins (who got nothing), that would be a potential inferno of debate.
I hope Valve goes after these ad agencies, but keeps an open mind for ways to allow it in the future. - Junto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lol, l33t, pwned. lmao. Anyone can create custom maps and make them available to CS server admins to install onto their game servers. That's what makes CS fun to keep playing. I have no problem with ads in maps, but don't remove my ability to vandalise them! Press "T" to sssppppray! If games get cheaper as a result of advertising then it could be good for the players.
- Abx0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agret: Thanks for the correction. Thats why I put a Question Mark :)
- Abx0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"but it was never cleared with Valve, the game's creator"
"The game's whatnow?"
This is Counter-Strike: Source, so they did make it. Lol. - kb9vgr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0subway never said take our money and hack a game acording to this it was 2-4 adcompanies down a chain that put the ads in the game
in short buy subway send hatemail to the ad companys - Abx0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ok maybe it wasn't Source, I'm a retard. But Valve bought CS, and hired the people that made it?
- jaderobbins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I've played on a couple servers with the subway ads, they are great i think. I love subway so it's nice to see the current deals they have, and it's not that invasive. Mani admin mod puts it's little logo up on maps too, and css would be nowhere without Mani.
i really think valve should try to let some server admins recoup thier losses, and i mean if the ads get out of control people own't play there. The market will level itself out. - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I wish Subway were open 24hours.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's true, ads are really everywhere... just as long as it's not some pr0n advert telling me how much bigger I can enlarge my penis.
I want subway now... damn you sweet onion chicken teriyaki, damn you!!! - sonnysavage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0...no digg
People create custom maps all the time. What's wrong with putting advertisements into your map? - AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Interesting.
- LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0outrageous. I don't think about sandwitches when I shoot in that game. I think about cookies. dark chocolate cookies.
- adam.skinner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I don't think valve has a case here. When you buy a piece of software, it's yours to mod. Is the server even delivered by Steam? I doubt it. It's probably not even patched by steam. We simply have a case of a greedy product manufacturer going after people who want to use their product to turn a profit.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I think it's fair for server owners to host these ads if they choose to.
After all, if we stopped paying to host CS, CS would die.
It's just a couple of adverts - not the end of the world.
Amen - thecolor11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Dupe
- Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0tuxfan: LOL! great Idea! *pitches the idea and takes credit for it*
